It has happened before, it will probably happen again... Where will you be when Florida Man strikes? :)
Whether it be a mallninja wallhanger katana, a machete, or some other sword-like object, the basics of armed fighting the way it was done in history still apply. But what are the simplest, low-risk options for defending against a wild blade swing, assuming you have at least a stick?
Let's nerd out about some historical techniques / tactics that would apply, in a hypothetical just-for-entertainment sort of way (i.e. don't try this for real). Certain blocks, parries, and evasive actions may be comparatively safe, but real-life fights are dangerous either way... De-escalation and escape is always the best choice, if possible.

Florida man here, and we do pirate reenactment down here. More sabers and cutlass than Katanas in the north east (St Augustine) and West Central (Tampa Bay). Buddy of mine that I used to run Boarding Actions with actually had to defend himself from a fellow Florida Man that was wielding a machete, and did it with a Hand and a half. Took a big cut to the arm, but knocked out the aggressor with the flat of the blade. We’re all crazy down here, riding our Alligators into battle, and so forth. Wouldn’t have it any other way. As for realistic weapons to defend yourself down here, golf clubs, oak branches, rebar, pool sticks, hand full of sand, just to name some more common items.

The first case of Florida Man with a sword I heard of was in '95 where one stuck his in a pool vacuum and had to be rescued by the fire department. He had become so engorged they had to wait three hours for the swelling to go down before he could be extracted. His story was that he was swimming by and it sucked him in. Long before Florida Man was a thing.

Incidentally Skal, moving in was how I remember my Krav Maga instructor training us to deal with someone swinging a blunt object vertically. You stick your arm up vertically to deflect the blow from your vital areas and move forward to catch the attack as early as possible (so it has as little momentum as possible). You then grapple and remove the object. (That's the theory at least.) Makes sense you'd do something similar with a sword. Of course, if you get this wrong, you will take the full force of the blow in the sweet spot of the attack.

In my area of Edinburgh in Scotland, folks get chopped up or stabbed quite often. I have never been much of a runner & now that I have had both my hips replaced & no longer use a walking stick or crutches I don't really have an excuse to wander around with something that I can use defensively. If you have a jacket or clothing item wrap it round one arm for shielding is about the best advice, Do Not use your belt! As the lack of mobility when your trousers fall down is a real hindrance! 😳 Stay safe out there!

Holding the hammer like a stick would be pretty brutal. It’s a club with a weighted, fancy pommel. Could probably do the same with an ax if its forward pike is long enough or the head can be used as a guard. 10/10 would not mess with that.

I hope you know how to use grandpas cane well against a sword, otherwise you’ll make yourself look stupid AND get sliced up. And believe it or not, guns are easier to use than swords or sticks. We get it you watch videos about medieval sword fighting but that doesnt make you a damn swordsman, and if you were it still wouldnt be a better option than just leaving, or like i said using a more effective weapon thats widely available in america.

If you're unarmed and facing such wild attacks, use kicks. What types of kicks depends on how trained you're in kicking and what martial art you learn those kicks, I don't need to tell you because you already know. But if you never learned any kicks, just give strong straight thrusting kick as quick as you can to abdoment area or below, it is the fastest reaction you can do in panic situation. Then you can combo with lots of kickings and punchings afterward, or you can just leave. Leg is longer than hand, it is the longest natural weapon on your body.

Don't know if you will see this, but... What sword would a wheelchair user use? I know, wheelchair availability and widespread sword usage don't really overlap. But, it's still interesting to think about. My thoughts: zweihänder. Might be a bit awkward to carry around, but would work well with. Overhead swinging. Generally longer handles, to offset the lack in mobility. Also. How about ambulatory wheelchair users (those who can *sometimes* stand up, but not always, or only at the cost of pain). Would the answer change?
@NDOhioan
@NDOhioan Жыл бұрын
Admittedly, I'm being an armchair expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But, I'd say it depends on how much hip mobility the wheelchair user has. Assuming limited hip mobility, I'd argue they should use a rather light rapier. Thrusts require less torque than cuts do to be effective, but I'm not sure how hip mobility would effect capacity to hold it. Smallswords could also work, but they'd have less reach than a rapier, so I'd argue for a light rapier. Maybe a thrust-oriented longsword, but they'd probably use it more like a spear than a sword. Assuming their hips are still fine, I'd say some type of large basket-hilted sword. Leaves the hand well-protected while still offering the ability to throw cuts and thrusts. They can't use footwork to protect their hands, so more elaborate hilts are likely better. If they're able to effectively transport a small shield, they could probably also use a targe or rotella as an extra layer of defense (I'd assume bucklers would be a bad idea, since they'd occupy the hand and make it harder to move the chair when the need arises.) I don't really have the knowledge to comment on ambulatory users, so I'll leave that up for someone more educated.

I'd say if you are unnarmed, keep your distance, try to find an opening to escape and just prevent the guy from geting close. Quick kicks with your front leg are useful for keeping someone at bay. Against a sword, it's not that effective, but against something like a knife, which increases the reach of the arm but not so much that it would be longer than a leg, using front leg kicks to control the distance and trying to induce a frustrated oponent to overswing so you can close the distance, intercept the attack and grapple is usually a good strategy. I'd say it could work against a maniac with a sword, but you'd have to be far more careful and the chances of success are much lower.

There was a funny case involving a wirdo with a swrod in Poland not so long ago. Some guy obsessed with Japan, samurais, who even made his own swords, used katana on his cousin during some domestic squabble. He was sentenced for 6 months in prision (and 3 years in suspention) and a fine. He appeled, but not his prision time, but the fact that they confiscated the sword he used. He claimed he lives in accordance to bushido, and taking his sword away brings him dishonour. What's even more funny, the court, while rejecting his appeal, justified it by arguing that he acted unhonorably by arracking an unarmed person xD

To be fair, samurai would just straight up murder peasants who disrespected them or their lord, as insults would bring dishonor which must be prevented or punished. On the other hand, he wasn't born into the samurai caste so as a commoner he doesn't have the right to defend his honor with violence. Point being, the modern idea of honor is very post-feudal and post-theocracy and not what either knights or samurai believed in.

The most annoying thing about the whole experience was the police response... as soon as I said I fought off an intruder with a sword, they thought I was prank calling them. It took 3 days to get them to send someone out, and he wasn't there to investigate the break-in, he was there to cite me for nuisance calls -- until I showed him all the blood on my carpet, then he was suddenly "Ohhhhhhhh!" 🤦‍♂

Almost everyone in Florida owns machetes. I know of multiple incidents where someone uses them as a falchion attacking others. That being said they are usually used to sweeping cuts to remove weeds, small scrub brush, and other items low to the ground. They are also used for removing branches & the occasional snake from trees, so swinging at arms would also be likely. Therefore, Florida man would be most likely to swing at your limbs. He will also be far more experienced with his blade than you suspect.

He was an ordinary looking dude, at least after he had a haircut and a shower lol, the kind who doesnt even remotely look like a threat to anyone. He had no training in fighting. If his story was correct they were bullying and harrassing him, but he went home and grabbed a machete and came back. They allegedly started harrassing him again. I guess they thought it was just a joke that he pulled out a machete, or that a machete couldnt do much so apparently they didnt run away fast enough. Machetes are designed to hack through jungle. I'm a librarian who used to work in the greater Seattle-Tacoma area (won't get more specific for that for privacy reasons). After I witnessed a few violent incidents and saw how many of the local unhinged population had weapons, I invested $90 in a fighting cane. It has the advantage of being significantly longer than a machete, longer and more nimble than a baseball bat, and it has a heavy steal head that gives it great balance and an absolutely lethal reverse strike to the skull. Plus, since it is technically medical equipment, federal disability law lets me take it virtually anywhere, including work. Never had to use it, but it was nice to have nearby. I live somewhere safer now, but the cane still comes with me when I go downtown.

Trust me, it's not just Florida man. Blades and batons are far more common in certain neighborhoods than you would ever expect. Machetes and swords are unregulated and inexpensive, meaning if you can't get a gun, you carry a blade.
@nextcaesargaming5469
@nextcaesargaming5469 Жыл бұрын
There's a lot of stuff that is surprisingly unregulated. Cap and Ball revolvers are not legally firearms in the US, and neither are flamethrowers. And handcrank Gatling guns are not legally machineguns, only considered firearms. I'm surprised that in more gun-control heavy areas it hasn't become a Wild West RP server. I mean, sure, illegal guns and NFA items are still being pushed around just like liquor was in the 1920s, but still, a gatling gun and a brace of 1847 Walkers ain't nothin' to sneeze at for the low cost and low regulation.
@michaelroach2959
@michaelroach2959 Жыл бұрын
@@nextcaesargaming5469 When I said certain neighborhoods, I wasn't referring to general gun control so much as felons, addicts, and/or mentally ill per capita. Antique cap and ball guns are pretty unregulated; they also require specialized knowledge and supplies to prepare and maintain, have limited sources aside from ordering something online, and while inexpensive compared to a modern semi-automatic, are still several times as expensive as a machete (a fairly cheap black powder revolver lands between 2 and 3 hundred dollars, whereas a serviceable machete comes in under $30. Not to mention, while you don't need to go through a FFL and fill out a 4473 to buy and antique revolver, other laws regulating firearms at the state level may still apply. So if you're in and out of homelessness, with a felony conviction for burglary and two for possession of meth, you can drop several hundred dollars on a black powder pistol that may or may not carry two charges if you get arrested with it (one for felon in possession of a firearm, one for possession of a firearm while illegally possessing a schedule I or II substance), which you probably won't be able to maintain, or you can walk out of Walmart with a machete you may or may not have spent twenty bucks on.

Great video this technique is often overlooked despite it being not as complex as others and im a big fan of it simply because of how pragmatic it is. For people who want to know more, fencing masters advise to aim as to almost wound the neck and hitting the sword. Can cause few things such as beating away the sword or beating away and injuring the hand or to simply disarm the person. after the first strike giganti recommends to recover out of measure with a left hand blow in the same manner but overall there are many choices. Meyer simply say to cut two wrath cuts in a cross which is the same.Even has a drawing in the rapier part showing exactly on how to aim them. The cuts should be quick powerful and long sweeping. Also works vs several opponents and armoured opponents. Giganti recommends doing 300 blows in this manner from each side for training but i think fewer also suffice. Anyways really nicely demonstrated and probably the best tactic especially with modern bladed weapons that lack cross guards or other things.
