Vlogging Through History have you heard or read Harry Turtledove’s “Southern Victory” series. He has the Confederate States winThe Anerican Civil War which leads to a trilogy called “The Great War”. It has France, England, Russia and the Confederate States as The Entente vs.Germany, Austro-Hungary Empire, and United States as The Central Powers. Germany, Austro-Hungary, and United States win the war which leads to France, England, and Confederate State turning towards extremely radical governments as it was mentioned in this video. It is a great series to read. It ends with World War 2. I would recommend reading it if you like alternative history.

France never really had a strong right wing movement during that time. The closest it had to what we could call a "far-right" would be the monarchist movement. In France they did have a huge far left movement, not necessarily communist, but close to it. In this scenario its very likely France would become the new "home of the revolution" for left wing ideology. Much like Russia did in our timeline.

@AileDiablo Dude, the gdp of the Ottoman empire just before WW1 was half the gdp of Austria-Hungary, which was itself already half the gdp of Germany. Stop dreaming. The main problem the Ottomans had, and that only Ataturk managed to get rid of, was its archaïc administration and governement. It's more likely that by winning the war, they don't put themselves into question and keep their oudated system as it was (after all, they won), which would mean even more economic decline. Starting all anew like Ataturk did was the best that could happen to Turkey. Also, you completely forget what period we're talking about: the era of nations. Wars or not, won or lost, it wouldn't change that multiethnic empires like the Austro-Hungarian empire, the Ottoman empire, or even the colonial empires of France and Britain, were doomed to be dismantled in the 20th century. Times were changing. Ataturk understood that such an empire was a thing of the past, and that Turkey should exists as the nation of the Turks to remain stable and unified. And there were a lot more German people than Turks, I mean, a lot. Germany being more developed, more modern, with more infrastructures and stuff, isn't even the most important: without a lot of people unified (generally behind one ethnicity) even a miraculously developed country can't hope to reach the level of influence of a country that nearly reached 70 million even before the war and its gains.
@Verebazs3 жыл бұрын
@@xenotypos Actually, the role of nationalism and ethnic tensions in the role of the collapse of the old empires is ridiculously overstated, because it's more romantic. The economic hardships brought on by the war played a far larger role. It's especially ridiculous to asign ethnic tensions as the main reason to Austria-Hungary's collapse, if you consider that the newly formed states were even more ridiculously multiethnic than it was. The name "Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes" alone debunks the idea that those were nation-states. Same with Chechslovakia. Romania was the least diverse, and it still had around 10 ethnic minorities making up around 20% of it's population. To say nothing about the fact, that prior to the war, Transylvanian romanians generally actually looked down on Romania as a barbaric land. Also, Austria-Hungary's rate of econmic development actually overtook Germany's in the early 1900s (4% to Germany's 3% IIRC). So without the war, of with a short and victorious war, the economic advantages of the AH would've kept nationalistic tribalism in check. Of course reform would've been inevitable eitherway.

@richardelliott95113 жыл бұрын
Von Braun absolutely fled Germany, just not until after the war ended. If I remember the story correctly, this came from a book I read many years ago, he saw the writing on the wall figuring that he would end up going home with one of the Allies. Upon deciding that the Americans would be the best to go home with, he actively sought them out to surrender to. Under Opperation Paperclip, they snatched him up and then went after his team before the Soviets knew what was going on. Unfortunately, the Soviets did get a part of the team too and with a different emphasis within their space program managed to get ahead of us for a while with Sputnik. And you know the rest. Thanks
@dnocturn843 жыл бұрын
@@richardelliott9511 The reason that the Soviets got part of the team is, that the US didn't bother with low tier scientists and engineers. They solely caught the top tier scientists and thought this would give them everything they needed and would also make it impossible for rivals to do anything with the remains of that technology. The underground V2 production (and the concentration camp connected to it) was the final spot where they managed to get their hands on this technology, which is very close to where I live, in northern Thuringia. The Allies, or better the US Army, showed up first and took the place. They took the top scientists (some surrendered to them even earlier, like von Braun), completed rockets and important per-assembeled rocket parts and shipped them to the US. After Germany surrendered, the Allies wanted a part of Berlin from Stalin, which belonged to the territory his Soviet forces captured. He refused, even though he agreed to it prior to the victory. The Allies offered the state of Thuringia to him in exchange for half of Berlin. Stalins spies also knew a little bit about the US findings in northern Thuringia. So Stalin agreed and Thuringia switched ownership from US to Soviet. Stalins forces double checked the factory, managed to find all of the second and low tier scientists and engineers and even managed to reconstruct at least one rocket with the remaining spare parts the US had no interest in and shipped them and basically every remaining screw to Russia and started the Soviet rocket development program. The Soviets were able to achieve this faster, because the engineers the US ignored were actually more important to actually build a rocket than the top scientists the US took. The Allies basically sold the rocket technology to the Soviets and made it possible for them to win the space race. A strategical mistake, even though Berlin was also very important, I have to admit.

the part at the start where you wonder why the germans focused on sub-building rather than assault the RN can be answered quite simply. they did. the issue was that the sum total of the High Seas Fleet was only about 100 ships of all types. take the battle of Jutland for example. the germans had 16 battleships (22 counting pre-dreadnought) and 5 battlecruisers....whereas the grand fleet had 28 battleships and 9 battlecruisers. there was no way the Germans would win a direct engagement like that

First off, I'll just say - it's so awesome to see you do a "what if" scenario reaction, these kinds of things are always fun to think about, and it's great that we can get your properly educated opinion on such a topic. Now, I wanted to say that the map on the Eastern side was a bit inaccurate (I know this is really minor, but since I live in Latvia, I have to mention this), since it shows the border along the front that the Germans and Russians were holding from late 1915 to late 1917, on the river Daugava, with a major point of contention being our capital city of Riga at the coast. In early 1918, when peace treaty negotiations between the Russians and the Central Powers had stalled for a while, the Germans actually started advancing again, taking over the remaining territory of Lithuania and Latvia, and subsequently occupying Estonia as well. Seeing the tempo of the German advance, the Communist government then had no choice but to cede to German demands, otherwise they would risk losing actual Russian territory. So the point of all this is - on that map in the video, you could move the border line in the north over to the right by about a centimetre or so. The other thing is more of a separate "what if" (and I haven't seen this series, so I don't know what topics the author covers) - what would happen in Spain after WW1, would it spiral into civil war, or would there be a separate path that they would take, one that wouldn't lead to division and what seems to be permanent friction among the ethnic groups in the country. Also, what would happen with the Ottomans? They would probably be able to keep their gains from Russia, that they got in the peace treaty, but if Britain would go to war with the Central Powers, would the Turks be able to hold on to their southern holdings, or would the British still help the Arabs drive them out? And would that in turn result in a possible Arab state in the early 20th century, friendly to the British, instead of leaving the Arabs resentful and distrustful of the West? Ugh, this seems like a rabbit hole that is way too deep, once you really get into it...

5:30 Germany didn't even need to invade France. Germany could have fought a defensive war on its western border and repeatedly stressed a desire for peace with the French people. The Kaiser could even have offered to buy Alsace Lorraine from France, or trade it for German colonies in Africa. The French army would have eventually mutinied after one too many suicidal offensives, just like it did in our timeline. Except this mutiny would have been severe enough to knock France out of the war, because every rank and file Frenchman in the trenches would know the Germans weren't trying to take over France and their country was not in any danger. Once peace was made with France, and with the Britain never having joined the war, Germany could then have achieved the total domination of Europe all the way to the Urals that the Nazis attempted a generation later. Except the Kaiser and his cronies wouldn't have put millions of people in gas chambers...

The Destroyermen series eventually has an encounter with people from an alternate world where communism and socialism were crushed quickly in Russia, resulting in them springing up in other European countries. In response, those nations became more fascist. US stayed out of WWI, the 1917 revolutions in Russia never happened, and Nicholas II kept his throne. France, Spain, and Italy formed the Confederation of Sovereign States, a fascist alliance opposed to Britain, US, and Russia. They later admit Germany but as a junior member. During their version of WWII, a large Confederate fleet is sent to take British Egypt, but it ends up being transported to the world where the series takes place along with the city of Tripoli. The fleet consists of two dozen battleships and many more smaller warships, making the new League of Tripoli the strongest naval power

Regarding the naval blockade in this alternate scenario: I don't think Germany would really care that much about any naval blockade. What I think would happen: Germany would (directly and indirectly through their puppets in eastern Europe) make sure that a now friendly Tsar sits on the throne in Russia, instead of the Red revolution. Thus, they'd have access to all the crops and industry from Eastern Europe, plus all the Oil from the Caucassus and Romania without having to use sea-routes (they even could trade with the far east and China through land routes). That was the big problem with the blockade in our timeline: Russia was only kicked out of the war after over three years of meatgrinding with lack of ressources on both fronts plus Russia in a civil war without the power to effectively get a side on their side. Now let's say they beat Russia by 1916, sign Brest Litowsk, get all the oil, food and industry they need from Western Russia and the Caucassus, and then throw out France. Now they are fully capable to sustain a long cold war. Plus, while the UK couldn't do anything crazy harming to Germany, the Germans themselves could massively harm the UK through their colonies. A few raids in the middle east through the Ottoman Empire, an attack on Suez, etc., and Brittain starts to starve, while Germany can in a few years time build a navy that can match the British royal navy.

@@VloggingThroughHistory This scenario of the High seas Fleet sailing out in 1918 has been wargamed multiple times by the excellent naval history KZbinr Drachinefel and his findings are presented narratively in his video "The last ride of the high seas - Battle of Texel 1918". I personally believe that it would have been impossible for the High Seas fleet to engage in a decisive battle to break the blockade. This is due to two main reason: The number disparity between the two fleets, as well as the advantage the British fleet had in terms of signal intelligence which would allow them to know when the High Seas Fleet had left port in force. This coupled with the German use of worse quality coal leading to a speed reduction in their fleet would have meant that the British Fleet would always been able to engage the Germans with a significant numbers advantage.

Germany did try to send their fleet out to break the blockade. That was the Battle of Jutland. It didn't work for them. And Britain didn't save France in 1914. The Schlieffen Plan was always going to fall short because they didn't have the logistics to sustain the advance, the infrastructure in northern France couldn't handle a rapid movement of that size, and Belgian and French resistance slowed them down. They were stopped outside Paris by French reinforcements, not because the British showed up.

The Germans did send their High Seas Fleet out, in the Battle of Jutland. Blew up a bunch of British ships, especially HMS Queen Mary. That thing got blew up like the HMS Hood. Then in August 1916, Scheer sends the High Seas Fleet again to draw the British out which the British did. But what does the German do, tuck tail and sail right back to port.

2:59 the battle of Jutland the second largest naval battle in history god America’s Man ( it was a draw Britain lost more but Germany was scared after so never sent its fleet out again)
@VloggingThroughHistory3 жыл бұрын
I wasn't talking about Jutland. I was talking about an order given in October 1918, late in the war, for what would have been a suicide mission by the German fleet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_order_of_24_October_1918

Germany tried to sortee the HSF, but the RN was far to powerful in terms of the sheer number of ships, Jutland was a tactical victory (because of the incompetence of David Beattie) and a strategic loss in that they failed to cause sufficient damage to the RN strangle hold.
@DERP_Squad3 жыл бұрын
I would say that it was a tactical draw, and a strategic loss for the HSF. Even with the losses at Jutland, the Royal Navy was still vastly more powerful than the HSF. Further, Scheer was forced to retreat back to Germany, and only through a combination of luck and the fog of war were they able to make it back to Germany at all. Yes, Beatty made a lot of mistakes, and Jutland could have been a massive Royal Navy victory, but the HSF not getting utterly destroyed doesn't make the battle in a tactical victory for the HSF.

Speaking as a germane here, considering the alternate-timeline here as given, I think France, seeing there post revolution country failing time after time, would have split up into 2-4 of the following 1.German annexd: Elsas-Lorain and maybe more 2. central and western France "devolving" into a monarchies 3. old English lands staying a republic but also keeping close ties to England and the Be-Ne-Lux 4. southern and more Latin influenced France becoming friends of Italy and or Spain these may have been just short term divide like white and red Russia but it also might be final like Austro-Hungarian Maybe you could react to the scenario of "Whatifalthist" with the same question as a kind of comparison to this one. I personally find his version to be more likely. Also I became a big fan over the last few days and cant wait to become an active part of the community as well. Have a nice day everyone :D

I'm late to the party but the Belgian Army resistance slow the german army significally (IIRC they thought to cross Belgium in couples of weeks, like 2, and it took them like more than 6, i really can't recall the numbers but i recall it took them much longer than anticipated) and then the BEF was the nail to the coffin to the german plan. Still, very intresting video :)

It would be interesting to see how American-German relations would be. There was a HUGE german population in the US, and to this day German is the single largest European ancestery. It's possible America would distance relations from Britain and shift towards Germany since they would be the dominant force in Europe. It is probably more probable that America would further it's isolationist attitudes, possibly into the 21st century.

I think die Hochseeflotte could have beaten the Grand Fleet. German ships used more modern guns and had much better accuracy. Thats why the battle of jutland was basically a german victory

Quotation from video: " the Germans wanted an economic union..." sounds familiar. Germans now control all the top jobs in the E.U and prior to Brexit were working towards concentrating financial services and banking in Frankfurt.

There wasn't really a chance for the German High Seas Fleet to break the British Blockade, which became clear after the Battle of Jutland. The British Grand Fleet would've defeated them. This last operation was only a suicide mission to "save the honour of the german navy".
