Hello I'm Seungha from Korea.
I tried to solve some UPCAT for the first time.
It was very different from Korea and the most difficult part was
Actually understanding the English. Lots of words I had to guess the meaning..
Anyway I really enjoyed solving this problems and would like to try similar contents again someday!
Thanks for watching po :)

I passed UPCAT, ACET, and DLSUCET around 10 years ago. Compared to ACET and DLSUCET, UPCAT has the most number of questions in Filipino (math word problems in Tagalog, questions about Filipino popular culture, etc). The reading comprehension part of the UPCAT is quite practical, it tests your ability to read and infer information from different kinds of sources (newspaper articles, flight schedules, short stories, charts, maps, etc). Personally, in terms of difficulty: ACET was the hardest, DLSUCET was the easiest.

the Tagalog questions in math are usually just offerend to a very small percentage of exam takers (5-15%?). mine didn't have any. my husband's did, i think in his case a lot of his questionnaire was actually in Tagalog, which is a bummer cause he grew up in Cebu and barely knew any Tagalog 😂

I agree with this. I took those three tests and passed all three 25 years ago. DLSU was easiest and Ateneo is the hardest.

Exam is around 4 hours with around 400+ questions. You’re allowed to eat snacks while taking the test. Aside from your UPCAT test exam results (right minus wrong), they take into consideration your high school grades’ weighted average.

What I've noticed is that Philippines and South Korea has different system and students have different study habits too. Students in Korea are too tired everyday. They're very exhausted. If the body is tired you can't concentrate in your class so you will spend more time studying your lessons. While the students in the Philippines can have a little bit of fun while studying in their school. And also enjoying the company of their teachers while in Korea student and teacher relationship is very different.

Your English really improved a lot and I'm so proud of being able to follow your journey here in the Philippines. Thank you for this video! Reminded me of how nervous I was when I took the UPCAT. It is right-minus wrong so I was so conscious about avoiding mistakes and ultimately failed it. 😅 It's okay cause I passed 2 other known universities in the Philippines and graduated with no problems so I guess UP was really not meant for me.

I took UPCAT 20 yrs ago. The exam is 4 hours. We have 4 subjects (Language Proficiency, Math, Science and Reading comprehension). Half of the questions is in English and Half in Filipino. The test scores is just part of the requirements to be admitted. When we get our results, we are given a University Predicted Grade (UPG), which based on our UPCAT test score and our grades in high school. The UPG will tell if you will be addmitted to your choice of campus (UP has 9 campuses to choose from) and the degree program of your choice in that campus. Passing rate is about 10-15%.

This is probably why I passed because my high school grades were very good. I had a bit difficulty in the Math part but I breezed through English Proficiency and Comprehension. English was my favourite subject in high school. I don't remember the Science part.

Amazing how you still remember the details. I couldn't. All I remember was my dad who also graduated from UP telling me, "you'll know you passed if your mail feels thick." (yes, it was still slow mail notification back then). "Thin, if you failed." Thick because the letter comes with a scholarship offer that needs signing. It felt thick. And that's all I remembered. Nice to know I join the 15% club. :)

If the passing rate is between 10-15%, UP qualifies as a very selective university here in the US. I took UPCAT in the mid-70s and passed. I graduated from the UPSE in 1979 (I know, a very long time ago). I look at my UP days with fond memories and extraordinary and undiluted pleasures!

Hi Seungha, I agree with your own observation with your English-speaking skills. I reckon you definitely are speaking even better now compared to when you first came to the PHilippines. The best way to improve on your English-speaking is to keep on using the English language, watch and listen to English programs, news, and music. By the way, I hope you can collaborate with Jessica Lee as well. She lived in Bacolod when she and her family came to the Philippines. Her English is really good. You might want to ask her for tips :)

UPCAT... during my time, it is somewhat difficult to pass the exam, aside from the cut-off score, you also have keep in mind that it is "right-minus-wrong", meaning all of your wrong answers will be deducted from your right answers... e.g. in a 100-item test with the passing score of 75, if your score is 80, your final score for that exam is 60, thus failing the exam 😅

I passed UPCAT for Biology when I was 16, but I didn't study in UP in the end because it was too far. I forgot how long it took for each problem, but I remember finishing early and thinking it wasn't that hard. The main struggle really is the limited slots. Which means only a few students get in, even if more students passed the exam.

Seungha, you must be a very good teacher because you figured out right away that the reason why it can be a struggle to learn math is because English is not our primary language. Filipinos are taught Math in English and all our standardized Math tests are in English too. That's been a huge problem for the Philippines since time immemorial. And the scoring for the UPCAT is right minus wrong. I hope you continue improving your English and Tagalog so you can teach here in the Philippines. That will be a huge help for us! :-)

thats a myth. singaporeans are taught in maths and science in english aswell, and they are also taught their mother tongues, the native language of their race. filipinos treat english not as a language but as a subject that is learned in school when in fact it should be treated as a living language and used in daily life. its the reason why upper middle class schools perform better in standardized tests in the philippines. not because they are wealthy but because they use english as a part of their daily life. hilahan sana pataas, wag yung palusot.

But since I started to work and watched British tv series, I use english most of the time. We were taught all out english in elementary, high school and college. Tagalog was only used in filipino subject. I was born in the 60's and majority of the filipinos back in the days speaks fluent english. Why? becoz educators back then went to a rigid schooling, exams and trainings. Our school calendar was from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4p.m. Saturday was half day for our extra curricular activities adding that I don't remember Dept. Of Education back then hired teachers especially at english language who have tongue deficiency or accentuated tongue. Those days teachers must be born in Manila whereas their tagalog is straight unlike these past years that everybody can teach even if they are not qualified and not a BSE course graduate. Brilliance and pride of the students must've start and finished at school and to be able to do that educators have to be best of the best where we have in the 60's to 80's. So saddened at this time around that many has a difficulty to construct an english grammar.

UPCAT is not really too difficult to answer. But there's too many applicants competing for limited number of slots and this is the source of pressure and anxiety for many who are taking the exam. The high school grades are also taken into factor. The grading system used by the school. There's also a geographical factor since the slots available are distributed among the different regions in Philippines. Lastly, there's a chance thay even if you have a very high score but you're 30 ranks lower than other applicants for the course you applied for, then you might not pass the exam. Sometimes though your score may just be enough to be given a chance to apply for a different course other than the ones you chose during the application.

The way I understand is what is taught in Korea is way more advanced than what is taught in philippine schools especially in math. That is why korean students have to study their butts off from elementary up to after they get accepted in the best university they were aiming to join. When they get accepted in a university then that is the time they can relax

I took the UPCAT in the mid 90s. I think they gave us about 2 hours to finish the whole exam which combined different subjects. You have to pass your paper whether you finished or not. I think there were over 100 questions at least. I passed but selected a quota course, so they limit the number of students they accept in the Diliman campus. Since I was included in the over quota, they had me recommended to enter the UPLB campus instead. Not sure how it goes nowadays.

The Filipino way of studying: We always have a certain time to study and we also give time to condition our body and mind...Another way is to use the technique like Leaning is Fun (for teachers) - This is also effective by incorporating the lesson into games. once in a while...the teachers effectively apply Benjamin Franklin's quote on education: "Tell me and I forget; teach me and I may remember it, involve I learn".

He knows how to effectively study, he was top 1% student in korea in his time after all. His limitation in the UPCAT reviewer was the english verbal problems that he couldn't really completely understand. When I took the electrical engineering board exams, there were problems that the were worded deliberately tricky so that misunderstanding it would give you a different answer, you really have to read and reread so you won't miss the subtle wordings. There were also some problems which had very simple solutions of simply substituing the number figures to a known formula. The problem is the problem is a long-worded one with a lot of data figures (maybe six data when you only need two to subtitute in the formula), your problem would be to correctly identify the correct data that you need in the formula. I couldn't really believe how easy that question was but most of my batchmates got it wrong because they chose the wrong figures to use. I wonder if these types of questions are used in the UPCAT?

Hi, Seungha! It was great listening to you speaking in English. I personally can understand your spoken English, and I suppose most people subscribed to you would think the same. 🫰🏻✨️ I wasn't thinking that you will make a vlog about your attempt at answering UPCAT questions. I somehow understand your curiosity and agree that it can be fun to know how one would score on that kind of test. I think it's nice that you enjoyed answering the test items. UPCAT is in English because it is one of the official languages in the Philippines, the other being Filipino. (Since after the 1986 constitution, at least, when English replaced Spanish as one of the official languages). UPCAT is basically an aptitude test. The admittance score depends on the campus and choice of program of study. The highest scorers usually enroll in the Intarmed Program of the UP Manila campus. It's a pre-medicine course. I'd refrain from saying anything about cut-off scores because it seems like a touchy topic for some, based on expereince. But, UPCAT is not the only way to study in UP. Some are admitted through talent tests, like in the College of Fine Arts, or through sports or athletic programs. Transferrees are also admitted after earning 30 units from another college or university, given they satisfy a set of requirements set by the college and program they wish to transfer to.
