In God of War: Chains of Olympus, the Persian King calls the Greek Gods, weak and false Gods. Maybe that's worth looking into

I made a theory about The Persian Invasion of Attica on the God of War Subreddit, in which i point out the connections between Chains of Olympus and Ascension. Essentially one day i looking through the God of War wiki about the locations where the furies were hunting Kratos which was the Village of Kirra on the trivia section it states ''According to the official artbook of God of War: Ascension, namely The Art of God of War: Ascension the village of Kirra is located in Persia.'' Which got me thinking Hell the Manticores those flying creatures part lion, part dragon, part scorpion from Ascension are from Persia even the Elephantaur wears Persian armor, represting a connection. I know that the Persian King states ''Evil?'' it is not evil that i bring Spartan. I bring the might of the Persia and the Sacrament of Purification.'' the latter of which is likely Zoroastrianism, the main religion of the Persians of that time period. The king seemingly not only intends to conquer Greece but also introduce Zoroastranism to the Greeks. But what if there is more to this invasion then we think? What if The Persian invasion of Attica was some sort of a proxy war between the Greek Gods and the Persian Gods or even another wager/contest due to the presence of the Basilisk and maybe it was a response by The Persian Gods to what happened 5 years ago from the Events from Ascension? But what do you think about the Persian connections between Ascension and Chains of Olympus are just mere coincidences or there is more about This Persian Invasion of Attica then what was presented in the opening levels of the game despite the latter taking place 5 years after Ascension?

​​@@theanimeunderworld8338 In Greek mythology there is a story called Typhonomachy, it tells about Typhon who attacked Greece and fought with Zeus (he was present in GoW2). Some of the Greek gods fled to Egypt and took the form of animals, including those gods that Kratos didn't kill. Maybe Kratos filled the role of Typhon in mythology like he did in Norse by becoming Farbauti and the gods fled to Egypt because of him, maybe this will be reflected in the GOW world somehow?

@@WyattDucar Also, in GoW 2 Novel Clotho sends a squad of some cursed legionares who were once stranded and defeated, and pledged their loyalty and worship to the persian god Zahhak. Once Zeus knew of it, he cursed them to walk the Earth as undead and restless corpses. As for Attica, yeah the Persian King clearly was backed by atleast one God or more, to allow himself to invade Greece and speak of the Gods of Olympus in such a way. The "message" that Kratos was sent to deliver wasnt for the King, it was for the Persian Gods to back off before Zeus sends some of his kids to ravage them apart or perhaps go visit himself with the Blade of Olympus. Kratos also knew of the Egyptian gods and considered them as heathens, he also thought to himself how the Artemis Blade looked like a Khopesh.

My theory is that the Roman pantheon are reincarnations of the Greek pantheon. They are younger gods who are reckless and wage war against other pantheons as a show of might. They may not remember their past lives, but they are subconsciously haunted by the PTSD from being brutally beaten and killed by The Ghost of Sparta, the only name they know Kratos as.

That makes sense but for some reason I feel like this is also some what wrong. Rome had a tradition of incorporating foreign religious figures into their pantheon, such as from the Celtic, Kemetic and Mithraic religions. Saying they were 100% similar is false and the fact is both were bound to be similar anyway because both Italy and Greece come from P-I-E Cultures. And btw, God of War 3 is set in 464 BCE. This is relevant because this means that the Greeks are technically worshipping their gods long after their deaths with the peak of Greek religion and culture being in the 330s BCE. The Greeks wouldn’t even know half of their gods are dead, and when the Romans come around they don’t realize the same gods theyve been worshipping and intend to interpret as theirs are also dead

I really like this because I think one aspect of GOW that should be touched on in new games is Atreus learning of what Kratos did in his past on his own. Not in the sense of becoming scared of his father (that would be super frustrating to play through considering their relationship in the first two games), but simply of learning about it from a victims perspective. Considering how empathetic Atreus is to others, I think it would be very interesting to walk through a story in which Atreus and Kratos come to terms with something that was given a little bit of light in Ragnarok; do your future actions warrant forgiving past actions?

My theory is that since Kratos destroyed the Greek Gods, other Gods from different Pantheons have arrived in Greece to rebuild and rule. The Roman Gods could be them given the proximity, however Greek/Roman Gods share proximinity with the Egyptian Gods as well.

I kind of thought the surviving ones would go to Italy in order to gain new power and their leader is Ares, or rather his spirit, since it was imprisoned in the throne room. Once freed, his spirit would lead the survivors in returning his power, albeit with Apollo with as the figure head. Mars was a very important god in Roman mythology

The Disciples of Ares tried to bring him back with ambrosia but Kratos got to it first. And in Ghosts of Sparta, Kratos kills The Dissenter who wanted to murder the new god of war because Kratos killed Ares... So tell me please where you read or seen that Ares spirit was still in the throne room.? If there is material that covers it I would like to see it because I've never read or seen anything in games or literature that said Ares spirit carried on after death

In Ragnarok there is a boat/sled dialogue that explains why Kratos can't use his Greek magic anymore which is followed by Atreus/Freya bringing up how magic is connected to its homeland and a theory that when Kratos destroyed Greece, the Greek magic there was also destroyed. Again this is just a theory but it never did say what would become of the magic that was installed in items, as for all we know magical items could be its own kind of magic and thus not be bound to the homeland rule. Still, I think it is enough of a loop hole to have Greek magical item give the people who wield them god like powers, espeically if the writers wanted such a thing to happen.

I did have a fan fic-y idea where the humans escape Greece to Rome and eventually become leaders in the Roman army, possibly senate, etc. They are bent on revenge on Kratos and seek out the power of the old Greek gods. It would be a continuation of Kratos reconciling with his past. Even with the Valhalla ending, it would be interesting to see him confronted by his past. He might have found peace, but now he needs to confront the actual civilization that he destroyed. Basically the inverse of the first three games.

I would highly recommend looking into how the Roman gods and religion were significantly different from the Greek gods and religion, especially when it comes to the gods the Romans and other Italian peoples worshipped before they were syncretized with the Greek pantheon. As much as God of War tends to lean more towards a "popular" depiction of the mythologies portrayed (such as Hades, both the god and the place, being influenced by the idea of the Devil and Hell, or the Kraken being a Greek monster despite it technically being of Norse origin), the more recent games show the franchise leaning at least somewhat into more nuanced and well-researched versions of the myths they depict. For example, the comment in God of War 2018 about how "Frigg" was merely a nickname for Freya, while not necessarily 100% accurate, does at least show an awareness of a theory proposed in some academic circles. Similarly, the comment on how not all Giants are of "giant" size shows an awareness of the linguistic nuance surrounding that common mistranslation. If Santa Monica were to depict the Roman pantheon in greater depth (whether to show the extent of Rome's influence in the world when a game otherwise takes place in an unrelated pantheon or as the main subject of a game itself), then I would expect there to be quite a bit of commentary on how the Roman and Greek pantheons are not, in reality, anywhere close to the same as many people expect. Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if Rome was more of a background thing in this world, a political hub where multiple pantheons had a degree of influence, such as through syncretism and the various mystery cults that were known to exist. Interestingly, the Roman Empire never touched Scandinavia, and since, if memory serves right, the Norse Saga of God of War takes place _before_ the Migration Period, which Google says spanned from 300 CE to 700 CE, there is a statistical likelihood that the Roman Empire, or a mythologized version of it in any case, could have been around during the events of the Norse Saga. We might have never seen explicit evidence of this because, as stated, the empire wouldn't have come into contact with Scandinavia/Midgard. But they _would_ have come into contact with Mimir's homeland, which seems like a logical place for Atreus to go from Midgard to if we're going by real-world geography.

The Mars = Kratos thing is kind of funny because it fits Kratos so well, Mars is more Noble than Ares ever was and much smarter, Mars wasn't just the God of War but a God of Agriculture and the Harvest, Mars favours Noble Soliders over Cruel Warriors and also Mars was described by Emperor Augustus as an agent of Vengence and Retribution, a lot of things you can attribute to Kratos.

Didn't know they even existed. I always assumed they worked by DC Comics logic: "The Roman gods were avatars of the Gods of Olympus, created to further their influence in Latium. Jupiter was the avatar of Zeus." Which kinda makes more sense since they'd just be the Greek gods but from Wish lmao. Intersting theory, and definitely something i think would be cool to see explored later in the series. Though i do have my own theory about the possibility of the roman gods. Theory: what if the Roman Pantheon is the reincarnations of the Greek one? Like Athena found a way to recreate the gods with new names and a lack of memory of who they used to be so she can control them from behind the scenes. Even going as far as to create Manerva (typically the name of her Roman counter part) as a way to throw off suspicion that she's the one in charge. Either that or piggy backing off the video's theory a bit heres another. She collected the remains of the weapons Kratos lost, had them reforged with a more Roman like design, found some humans strong enough to servive the destruction of Greece, and then gave them said weapons while using her own power to turn them into gods. Not like we haven't seen her do so in the past

I'm more inclined to the theory saying that the remaining gods of the Greek pantheon rebuilt Greece after its destruction. The missing piece regarding whether all the pantheons exist on the same globe / planet or do they exist different planets. We're not sure but i remember Cory says something about galaxies and that the end of the world was only a geographical apocalypse, and it didn't mean all the universe was destroyed, only the Greek world. So either they exist in the same planet or on different ones. Tyr was traveling magically to all mythologies from what we saw, but the question is, does necessarily require a magical way of traveling to visit other pantheons or not.

I think in some way Atreus, on his journey to find all the giants, will somehow end up in Rome. Possibly, Atreus could be captured and word gets to Kratos, leading to a rematch of sorts (probably with a lot less godly death than the Greeks due to their more war-focused natures)

I think it was stated the novels are secondary canon. Meaning the things in the novels are canon but if there is an information or an event that contradicts or is different than what happens in the game, then what happens in the game is the one that is considered canon.

Maybe the Roman Pantheon was the Greek one but after their destruction the survivors rebuild civilization, now godless, thanks to the hope Kratos left them. So in the present time, a couple of centuries after the events of GOW 3, we might see the mediterranean sea being controlled by a mostly human civilization, explaining the Caesar's coin. There are for sure some remaining Greek gods that didn't die at the Pantheon's destruction so this would explain why "in real life", Roman Gods are basically the same as the Greek ones, since they remember them and still have some around.

Maybe they could throw us a curveball and have the roman empire be just humans but maybe the power of hope gave a lot of the former greeks powers? They could tell an interesting story of how humans can be monsters, and have Kratos or Atreus save other lands from the roman super soldiers. Keep in mind they wouldn't be nearly as powerful as a god or even one of the mythical beings we have already seen, but when an army all have some amount of power it could be interesting for story and gameplay reasons. 100s or 1,000s of xmen level mutant powered humans might be enough to take down gods from other pantheons, and the gameplay could reflect that by having encounters with a lot more enemies but they are easier to kill. Not all encounters though, they could still have humans that are more powerful than others to give more of a challenge. Not only do I think this would be a unique change of pace for the series, but I honestly can't see how the remaining greeks would ever except gods again. Ultimately though, just being a god isn't what makes someone evil, it's the power and mindset. This would explain the roman empire pretty well in the god of war universe IMO

What if the pantheons of the polytheistic religions of the world were actually the fallen angels of God the creator, now im not saying to take the game into a complete judeo/christian biblical direction but… if they were the fallen angels it would be a pretty cool reason as to why most of the so called Gods are malevolent and maybe Kratos is Gods answer to there corruption on the world and eventually Kratos becomes the Angel of Death which would also bring back that grim reaper idea Cory Barlog had. Mimir explains that hel creates illusions to haunt the criminals that end up in hel when they die. Kratos is not supposed to be in helheim while being alive, so helheim acts as if he is dead and attempts to haunt him with his past which he feels guilty about. Mimir tells him not to go there because it will continue to haunt him if he went towards that ghost

I think they could incorporate Roman pantheons like this. I could have powerful beings we've never seen before take the roles of the Greeks gods, but change their names. Mercury would take Hermes role as the messanger God. Jupiter taking Zeus role as the king of the gods etc. In this case you could say they are just frauds. Pretending to be the gods. I think this is a cool idea since Roman and Greek mythology have a lot of similarities. Instead of having two similar pantheons. You have a pantheon formed from the death of another.

I think that if we were to venture into Egyptian Mythology we'd just see them at a time that will be fit to tell a story and they won't care if it's 1000 years before Norse mythology or 1000 years after.

I have the theory of there being another kratos that would create the rome phanteon remember kratos travelled back in time to fight zeus well it seems he's in a diferent timeline because zeus dialogue is different from the one in beggining and there's another kratos that disapears when the original gets ready to fight zeus some said the second one died because the timeline was changed but i say he went to hades probally staying there for to much time and after God of war 3 when the greek realm was destroyed and the original kratos left to Egypt the second one came back and turned evil because remember the evils of the great war never went out of greece not even to the gods of asgard or any other phanteon so they stayed in greece and this second kratos will get infected because he wouldn't be protected by the power of hope because this one never pandora and when that happened he would erase the memory of the greek gods creating the Román phantheon and aplie this rule to the old generation survivors like probally aprodathie who would probally change name after pressing ⭕ with the new rome kratos and this kratos would even change his tittle to the Júpiter God Leaving a possibility on having a canon versus between greek and norse kratos

Great theory, except, I don't thank that any other was able to extract all of power from Blade of Olympus. I really think, that group of people could take the blade and place it in some sort of Hall of Heroes of Greek/Roman pantheon. And they waiting for arrival of original(not really original) owner of the sword, with is Kratos. I know what you will ask, "than why Kratos wasn't able to extract back all of his powers from the blade in GoW 2 and 3?". With is simple, Kratos was consumed by his rage in these games! And now, after all these years of experience and gaining more wisdom, if Kratos will visit Greece/Rome one way or other, people will welcome their hero, and retrieve him the Blade, hence, he will obtain all his powers back! In God of war we see that belife is a big deal and powerfull, what if when kratos destroyed the greece pantheon and gave hope to the mortals, rome would now come from the ashes and the old greece gods would be reborn, what if athena herself is in on it, what if she creates a new pantheon with the image of the old, she did become something new. I would love to see Kratos see Jupiter and call him Zeus, maybe jupiter would be in athenas control but beign made as a copy of zeus he would have memories of Kratos. A cool idea i think.
