What’s most interesting to me is everyone is forgetting the fact that Garm attracted the mask even though Atreus was wrong about the translation. My theory is that garm was also connected to the higher plane snd his ability to travel through realms by creating rifts with the same green color glow. I don’t think the developers just left that in there for no reason Garm/Fenrir is 100% also connected to the mask/higher existence

I'm pretty sure that Heimdall stole the shard and just placed it in the other realm for Atreus to find. I mean he did say to the all father that he "brought the item he wanted". I mean think about it, why would the ALL FATHER of all the people not say a word about Garm to Atreus or the other one? Unless he wanted Atreus to deal with Garm. Hell the all father was acting even sympathetic towards Atreus in the end (sitting on his bed, saying its okay and stuff). Atreus wants to prove himself to the All Father and he knows that. My proof; Atreus has a hard time reading the mask (he blames it on misreading later on, and the All father could have faked acting surprised). Heimdall literally teleporting with the crows is a dead give away. All Father doesn't panick when he learns about Garm's release. Heimdall's mission. The ending of the game; Odin reveals that only Loki can use the mask/ look into the raft while wearing it. EVERYBODY was scolding Atreus (while Odin acted kind towards him, driving him further into his hands), but he didn't anticipate Kratos helping his son, or shutting down the others. Hell if you look at how Atreus left to go to Asgard, you would think Kratos would join in on the scolding (what Odin probably excepted from Kratos, driving Atreus even further into his hands and straining his relationship with his father).

@@zerogalaxy2735eimdall stole the moon or the box for the moon or whatever it was. Garm has the same rift energy or something within him that's how hes able to tear holes into the realms and odin doesnt panic upon garms release because he cant get to asgard I cant remember if its explained how odin managed to completely seal asgard to wear the only way in and out is through his raven power.

I see where you're coming from and I'm not saying you're wrong. Hell you have some good points: Heimdall only referred to it as an "item" (not a box or shard). Garm most likely couldn't get into Asgard because of a barrier. Odin is perfectly chill. However your theory does have some flaws (relax mine isn't water proof either): Garm would hinder Odin's interest in ruling the other realms immensely (cus there wouldn't be any left). If Garm has a similar energy that the mask has, then what would stop it from let's say entering the higher realm that Odin wants to get into? Odin has the Horn that starts the end of Asgard in his possession, so he would most likely already have the box. What would stop Heimdall or Odin for that matter of getting that box if they can teleport all over the place? Garm doesn't have a lot of space to move around with (look at the chains). The mask's glow decreases dramatically at 12:28:11 kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6nPnXqFjZV4rNk (this doesn't make any sense if was because of Garm or an item in Garn, because the mask was brighter than light bulb while Atreus was quite a distance from Garm away from Garm. Its simply put inconsistent.) While if it was because of the shard moving away at high speed (teleporting) it would kinda make sense, seeing as how the mask has a great ability of track and radius).

Let's not forget that Surtr stated that the Blades of Chaos have "Primordial Fire" in them. Kratos said that they are not of these lands, while Surtr answered "It shouldn't matter" and proceeded to burn the blades with his fire. The mythologies are connected when it comes to their conception, or at least Greek and Norse myths

In "The Origin of The World" Nag Hammadi Gnostic texts, Chaos is not the first thing to ever-present, Christian Gnostic groups were the first group to rejects the primordiality of Chaos, as Chaos were emerged from darkness (referencing Biblical Outer Darkness), but it goes even beyond Genesis as Darkness itself was casted as byproduct after the completion of emanations from Pleroma were completed within Barbelo (as the sum of entire Creations), then back to the Chaos, after Chaos was generated out of Darkness, then every Divinities would be born, the first being Demiurge as the ignorant, blind and in Sethian case also evil "builder/architect/artisan" of The Universe, which being indirectly guided through Sophia (Wisdom) Also the mention of Sophia rebelling was wrong, it was more out of her desire to generate Demiurge without the consent of her other Aeonic half, not out hatred, although Demiurge in the Greek concepts are often equated with Zeus or Gaia (as either Skyfather(s) or Earthmother(s) ), some Gnostic sect akin to Perates and Jewish Gnostic Justin blatantly considers Athena to also being evil, some groups akin to Ophites considers Athena to be equated with "3rd Heaven" (Venusian Heaven), as it's encompass beyond a single deity but almost a sentient heaven with changing bestial-faced monstrosities spawned from Demiurge as Hebdomad (or the conventional Gnostic system of 7 Archons, yes, Genshin Impact literally based their 7 Archons based of said concept and their upcoming Honkai Star Rail have around 15/16 beings considered to be Aeons in their own grander settings, which is half of Valentinian 30/32 Aeons although they turned it into comical Final Fantasy entities since Honkai Star Rail took more inspirations from JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7 to 10 or so, which turns them even more ironic when they portray Archons in Genshin as somehow benevolent or non-actor after being benevolent too, it's like they tried to subvert Gnostic concepts only to ended up becoming another types of Gnostics akin to Mandaean and Manichaean, which is what "Honkai" is acting as the demiurge in that huge franchise settings, I'm not even starting about SMT and Persona especially since P5 are also eventually ended up being Gnostic, it's like even pop culture can't escapes it despite they're too reliant on visual medias and ended up poorly delivering Gnostic concepts which already beyond abstracts, not to mention every Gnostic groups and religions except maybe Mandaeism have recurring presence of Jesus, which God of War director already confirmed to be same part of God of War universe too, which further solidify the theory of Gnostic Pleroma/Fullness) Again, Gnostic groups in early Christianity and Judaism were diverse and does have different Cosmology, even the mainstream Christianity concepts akin to Hypostasis of God to Seven Deadly Sins from Origen to the more eccentric proto-Orthodox Church Fathers Ponticus, Clement of Alexandria, etc were influenced by Christian Gnostic groups whether they try to deny it or otherwise, despite they flaunted about Book of Enoch and Jewish Apocryphas, they're too scared to acknowledged Christian Apocryphas, which somehow ended up proving Valentinius right at least with me going full tangent into IRL Theological discussions)

Here's one for you. Was Athena responsible for the cataclysm in GoW3? Kratos killed multiple gods before the events of GoW3, including the literal personification of death itself, and yet nothing like the disasters we saw in GoW3 happened. Maybe Athena wasn't satisfied simply becoming the new Queen of Olympus and wanted to wipe the entire slate clean and start over from scratch.

Theory: I am predicting that the green scar is connected to the “higher plane of existence” that Athena “Ascended” to after her death in God of War III. A few bits of dialog keyed me into this train of thought. 1st: Odin questioned what sort of afterlife awaited him after his death and looking into the green scar gave him some insight. I believe he was looking into the realm of “higher existence” that Athena occupies (possibly) to this day. (She was defiantly present to pull the sword from Kratos at the end GoW3) 2rd. Odin in the game is the closest match to a God of wisdom much like Athena. I believe had Odin stayed on a virtuous path he would have “Ascended” beyond the green scar to the “higher plane of existence” naturally. However, unlike Athena when Odin was confronted with a glimpse of the realm beyond, he became obsessive and destructive. Odin is an example of the kind of damage a wise person can do with a lack of empathy. As he stated in the fight when Atreus (Loki) destroyed the mask, “Everything I worked for. Everything I killed for….. what was it all for” he justified all the evil acts and manipulation of others as the cost of seeking “truth and knowledge”. Ultimately, (if the theory that Athena ascended because she sacrificed herself for the greater good” this evil obsession would have possibly led to his rejection from “higher existence” (aka the loss of an eye). Minor other points: As it stands there is a plot hole on why the Mask reacted to Garm in Helheim even though no mask fragment was present. If the prediction is that the Green Scar is a tear in existence to a “Higher Plane” my prediction is that Garm was the one who made the tear. Garm’s ability to traverse and tear holes win the realms is second to none. Who knows what scars he ripped open in the world tree before being chained in Helheim? It may even be possible that Gram’s soul may have unintentionally crossed over to the “high existence” (or been destroyed) leaving his soulless body behind. Mask could be reacting to any number of Gram’s connections to “higher existence”. (Not to mention the game points out the difference between primordial beings and gods much as the original trilogy did) In the end, there are a number of parallels between Athena and Odin. Both Athena and Odin wanted Knowledge in order to rule over the land. Both did not seem to care who they hurt or used in the process. Odin lied to himself thinking he could make the 9 realms a better place with what lies beyond the tear. Athena in her “ascended state” stated when Zuse was killed, “mankind was ready to hear her message" and when Kratos returned hope to mankind she exclaimed, "mankind would not know what to do with it (hope)”. Both seemed to have delusions that they were the fittest to rule over all.

Uranus, Zeus' grandfather, fits most as the Demiurge since his name sometimes is spelled Ouranos, which is reminiscent of Ouroboros. Snakes are commonly tied to myths of life as a curse and in Gnosticism, all of human life is just an immortal soul trapped in an imperfect mortal coil. Zeus is technically supposed to be the one who provided the divine spark of the soul in an imperfect body from his slain father, who had also slain his father, leading to all life as a metaphorical Ouroboros, especially with the added myth of Kratos killing Zeus. That would make Ymir and Zeus distant cousins if my theory is correct. Ymir could be connected to the Titan line of Gaia and Odin would be similar to Zeus by killing a primordial one and ending the Golden Age of the Titans to build their kingdoms.

The finale ends up with them fallowing the star that Jesus is born under becoming the three wise men. GoW2 even shows this in the thread of fates level.

I think beyond the rift is where the gods of the gods are, outside of any creation stories and the gods are basically trapped in their own universes. Odin wanted to get out and see where they came from and why who put them there etc. beyond the rift will be the ones who really pull the strings over all the pantheons. Thor in comics came upon a similar idea, when trying to stop ragnarok he discovered there were other beings beyond the gods who have manipulated the pantheons for eternity.

Honestly, the way the Rift and the "indescribable" God sounds a whole lot like HP Lovecraft style of writing. For those unaware of what that means, Lovecraft was a fantasy gothic horror writer, best known for Eldridge Gods like Cthulhu. His horror was based on the concept of an average person seeing creatures and Gods so beyond the scope of human understanding that it would break your mind and soul just by looking at it. He did this by intentionally writing descriptions that contradicted your normal senses, and scenes that had you fill in the blanks but the end result is a picture so distorted that the mind can barely visualize what it's interpreting.

"There comes another, a Mighter One; but his face and form I cannot foretell; Few are those who can further see than when Odin shall meet the Wolf (Fenrir, who devours him in the myths)". I first learned of that passage from the Eddas during Roy Thomas' run on Marvel Thor, circa V1-270-300. It may indicate that those writing down the Eddas were watching Christianity overtake their faith. That was also the run that, to my knowledge, intro'd the idea that Ragnarok was the culmination of a cycle, not the final end. Issues 293 and 294 depicted a prior Ragnarok wherein the Aesir were closer to their traditional depictions.

@@sbollimpalli I am still not fully certain that these shifts had to have necessarily been intentional. Cause it's hard to come in from outside a community and tell everyone that things they passed down about their own history/legends/mythology is wrong. And writing your versions of stories down is only of limited use if most of the people you're trying to convert can't actually read. It seems more logical to me that something similar happened as here in Germany. Once the new faith was introduced old gods/creatures started to morph into versions that fit the new framework creating now well known folk tale characters. I can imagine that the Edda is simply in an early phase of that shift. Not really planned but a natural development. ...Or some things we believe were changed are actually original and some things we think are original aren't. Who knows? *shrug*

Greek/Roman Gods often have a Triumvirate, young, old and complete, and Gnostics tie that to Self-conscious, sub conscious and unconscious, with the true God being the unconscious aspect we can't know while awake/alive. Her unconscious self would have passed on if this were Gnostic pleroma, her spirit or sub conscious can exist within Kratos if he accepted her into his heart. Essentially he could only envision her as he knew her, even if she spoke from beyond the mortal plane, but she would be something more beyond it. The spirit or sub conscious is always tied to personal truths that lead the mind back to the soul, and she appeared as he contemplated his self literally while taking out the swords. In a weird way he was just talking to himself, but in a Gnostic sense he was unconsciously calling on his spirit for guidance and it took the perfect form of Athena as he knew her since all spirits would be connected to The One in Pleroma.

My theory is that Athena or somebody was in the realm tear and was in this higher dimension. She used the higher dimension to go back in time where Odin first discovered it and wanted to entice him that looking into the realm tear he would find a way to end ragnarok. At the end of the game when Loki has the mask and got to decide whether or not he should use the mask to look into the realm tear, I think in an alternate timeline he looks into the realm tear and it opens releasing a higher dimensional being that kills kratos in the prophecy and Loki and odin team up to kill this being and since there wasn’t a fifth panel in the jotunheim prophecy they most likely died. but since he decided to destroy the mask it avoided kratos death and Athena’s plan was thwarted. I think the reason why she wanted to do this was to escape the higher plane and come back to the current reality.

If they're going the Gnostic route then what's on the other side of that rift would be a form of Kratos more powerful than Kratos could imagine, and a swift erasure from time and space if he brought violence into that place. To kill the Gnostic God would be to kill yourself, literally as your soul comes from it. No way Kratos kills the source of eternal life itself, more likely he is unknowingly fulfilling the true God's mission by killing false Gods and returning their stolen power to the source. I see him killing Egyptian Gods, maybe Babylonian gods which would bring him to either Satan or the Demiurge, the False Creator.

It’s interesting to me that Odin and Kratos both started out as weaker to more senior gods of raw power but both of them won and went in two entirely different directions afterwards. Also if Ymir died and triggered that rift maybe he ascended as well? Like Athena? Perhaps he and Athena will return as corrupted ascended gods

Instead of Egypt or Celtic gods, maybe we’ll see Kratos face the likes of Cthulhu. Eldritch beings have had a corrupting power that drives people mad, like Odin. His insatiable lust for knowledge. Maybe there would be a third option, like, save Loki and bring him back to sanity, but in that case, I'd want a muti-ending game, where one ending, he destorys the world, one ending, he saves his son, and one ending *if you complete all side quests perfectly* you save Loki and they reunite. I think the rift itself is more or less just access and free passage between pantheons. And that's how Athena got there (why she shared its colorful aura). With the access and free passage to all walks of life comes the ability to obtain for yourself the "knowledge" and "truth" atreus and Odin felt. It's not the cheat code they thought it was, but a portal of potential for you to seek out the answers for yourself.

Your theory makes total sense! Many people are quick to compare the mask with that one mask from the movie Jim Carrey played ("The Mask"), but I've seen no one comment on the writings ON the mask itself. I happen to be Greek and I noticed that when Atreus first started reading what is stated on the mask, he spoke greek words! Then, I took a good look of the mask through other cutscenes and noticed that there are indeed greek letters on its right side, forming real words that come from Modern Greek (they are written in modern greek form). I haven't made sense of them, because not all of them are visible, or, the developers didn't intend to make them make sense, but they are there and you can see them. HOWEVER, if you take a look at the left side of the mask, you can see characters that look like Chinese, or some other language from those parts of Asia! There may be even more characters related to other ancient civilizations in the middle, up-side or down-side that I couldn't figure out, like, say Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs! Just by figuring out that Atreus was reading Greek and taking a good look at the mask, I ended up on that same theory as you, that there is something above all pantheons that Santa Monica Studios gave us a hint about. Maybe people from other countries can take a look too and see if they recognize some of these letters / characters, because I'm totally interested in the secrets of that mask! Take the time to pause videos of cutscenes that show the mask up close to see if you figure something out!

Does this mean that Kratos is indeed still Athena’s monster despite what he said because he is her tool to destroy Odin since he is so close To getting in to the higher plane and she can’t share that power so she manipulates her tool to kill Odin.

Gives much more meaning when Kratos says "I'm you're monster no longer" the true God must've known Athena's plan and in turn like the book of Job he lost everything and everyone but he pushed on in life and God gave him a fresh start you can say with Faye and Atreus and now people will start knowing him as Benevolent and not as a monster anymore in beliefs they say a higher plane of existence is when they become the embodiment of a concept which is why you can't grasp the true Gods existence because it's the absolute embodiment of righteousness like the path Kratos chose his emotions , regrets and Faye influenced his drive to no longer be who he was

Instead of the following God of War game being about a specific pantheon, it is about Loki reaching this higher plane, by being a trickster and eventually effing up the balance of everything, Kratos goes on to fight what ever chaos is eating at the core of existence and freeing humanity from all deities completely.

Many people didn't get the words that were described in the mask were from greek origin but the mask had both greek, nordic languages for sure and maybe even more than that so yeah the God of war franchise will definitely get a huge continuation with both Kratos and Atreus taking the lead, who knows maybe we will get a third character which would be a son or a daughter of Atreus.
@vincenzoaquino8299

There are Greek, Egyptian, Japanese and possibly ancient hindu writing on the mask. Cory Barlog has confirmed that Kratos needs several games to figure out who really is and Kratos is God of War. Probably in the next the theme will be a multi-pantheon War (caused by the fall of Olympus and Asgard) and the fight against the Higher Existence .
@tonysoldan
@tonysoldan Жыл бұрын
@@vincenzoaquino8299 What happens if gods literally fight for their own survival? They could fear Kratos or maybe even try to eliminate him. If christianity was canon as Cory said then we could have god in the higher plain of existence and gods from pantheons acting as his angels. Kratos could be satan in that universe. Killing all gods and becoming the embodiment of wrath. But in Ragnarok Kratos sees a new path for himself which turns things around. So we could have the return of the exiled god to fix his mistakes in Greece which could either be under Roman gods or the christian god. As for “pleroma” Kratos could feel whole only when he achieves his purpose into molding himself as a true god of war. One different from other gods. This could lead to Nirvana (reincarnation circle in Hindu myth). Kratos could go to India after making amends in Greece. Atreus could go to Egypt and Japan (Kopesh and Katana would fit him like a glove) in a spin off series where the “higher plane of existence” is further explained.

@@tonysoldan Well the fall of Olympus and Asgard will probably cause a multi-pantheon War (this was also the original plot of GOW3),because the Pantheons probably will see Kratos like a definitive threat for all of them. Cory said that Athena was corrupted by some power or entity, so there some great evil behind her( the same thing that Odin see in the Rift?).

I’d figured that when Kratos saw Athena it wasnt merely a hallucination or representation of internal conflict, and was hoping that would be expanded upon in Ragnarok. I feel like it’s still a loose end but this is a very interesting way to look at it.

I have a theory about your theory, In the comic book it is stated by Athena that Katos has a destiny to fulfil.. His blades of chaos are a primordial weapon, they are always returning to him. And Athena is tounting him until he uses his blades to slay the giant hippo. She is deliberately trying to make him angry and make him use violence like in god of war 3 when he slays the gods of the greek pantheon, I think that demiurge is actually a good god as he is the one responsible of the creation of the physical universe and will actually subvert our expectations. my reasoning here comes from the fact that the monad kicked demiurge from heaven in the first place because he was the one who created the physical universe. so it makes sense that the monad is using Athena to manipulate Kratos into slaying all the lesser gods who control the physical universe. To erase it completely. It also plays into the narrative. the highest gods ware both tricksters, Zeus and odin they both tried and succeeded at manipulating kratos to some degree. So it wouldn’t surprise me if nomad is actually the bad big of the series. And nomed is sometimes connected and or associated with Jehovah. if you have ever read from the Old Testament i would assume you couldn’t really consider him a nice and caring god.

The Chaos Kamf came to mind when the rift was first revealed, especially in the same place where Ymir was killed. Many mythologies around the world begin with the head god(s) defeating a primordial being of great size and destruction, and creating the world from its body.

Well... like the saying goes. Knowledge is power, and power corrupts absolute. Odin became corrupt when he peered through the veil and had a glimpse of absolute Knowledge. Athena probably ended up insane as well, but much faster because she ascended directly. Or perhaps reverse. Who knows. Perhaps future games can tell? But there is certainly something more going on.

Odin is the opposite of Zeus in terms of philosophy. Zeus cared about being omnipotent as Odin cared about being omniscient. The mask made Odin obsessed with omniscient power over the 9 realms the same way Pandora’s box made Zeus obsessed with omnipotent power over Greece. The difference between Greek and Norse gods are that Greek gods are immortal as Norse Gods are mortal. Norse Gods live a long time but they still have a limited life unlike Greek Gods. Odin was protecting his mortal life from Ragnorok while Zeus was protecting his immortal life in the war against Olympians and Titans. Athena tried to manipulate Kratos for knowledge the same way Odin tried to manipulate Atreus for omniscient power. Kratos ended up learning a lot from Zeus about the nature of being a God the same way Atreus learned a lot from Thor about the nature of being a God. The Gods of Wisdom deep down had bad intentions and were using the Gods of Thunder. The Gods of Thunder deep down had good intentions but were used by the Gods of Wisdom.

What I LOVE, if they get into that "higher existence", there's Cthulu staring back at him haha. But reality I say there is ALWAYS a level of development to want more, higher and grow. Where reality of it is, the more you get, the more you want to go back, hence that missing feeling in the universe, why I feel with Gods in GOW they're the top of the food chain, but aside from handful with personal conflict, there are just those who will always feel empty and make more. Where I feel sacrifice isn't a "requirement" but more a coincidental path. Where her true feeling to stand in the way put her energy in sync with the moment of her death and body being catalyst to almost literally be a portal. Why Ymir in my opinion was at peace ALREADY, but because of conflict, within himself AND with Odin attempting to kill him, that's where the tear had come about, unlike with Athena's where it merely opened and let her step through.

Think of it from a Stargate perspective. The different pantheons belong to different universes. Only accessible by channels called God Gates. Tealc, I mean Kratos somehow left the Greek universe and traveled to Norse universe by one of these gates. You can think of Athena of having been ascended as did the ancients and all the other gods stuck in semi-ascended form like Anubis from SG1.
