More alternate history please! An alternate Turkish War of Liberation, Spanish Civil War, Russian Civil War etc would be very interesting. Edit: Chinese alternate history has so much untapped potential, as there are many specific important events that shaped Chinese history for centuries, which makes it easier to predict imo than Europe, and it's also very unexplored.

the final scenario sounds like an interesting one. Tibet would definitely become interesting too, because the British would secure it away from both Taiping and Qing influence as a Protectorate. Lots of potential for an interesting Manchurian equivalent of the Young Turks who work with Japan and Russia to modernize the Qing. The Guangxu Emperor was actually pro reform and modernization, and if the Empress Dowager Cixi was removed and he had a resilient base of support he might actually succeed.

The hidden ending: The Taiping, recognizing the difficulty of their situation, invite over emperor Joshua Norton, who is crowned as emperor of China. Under his leadership the Taiping go on to crush the Qing and are successful in modernizing, with the average Chinese having no different life to that of the average European or American. Following both popular and foreign pressure (in the form of the new Chinese blue water fleet, which easily surpasses all other countries' fleets, the American congress is forced to pass the act of union of 1874, giving rise to the Sino-American union.

Note: The best case scenario would also probably be the longest to make as China even before a civil war was pretty bad and for the Taiping to win it would devastate China meaning they would need to implement the reforms probably a century after Qing collapse (although that’s the worst case for the best case) and trying to stop all the European meddling that was before the rebellion

That got me thinking. What if Michał Boym mission was successful and Zhu Youlang (Yongli Emperor of Southern Ming) got help from Catholic powers like Portugal, Papal States and Venice (and potential from other Catholic countries)? Could Catholic Chinese state consisting of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan survive? Or even united China? For those who do not known, Yongli was last Southern Ming Emperor, who really needed help from the West, so he allowed a lot of Jesuit Missionaries in his court, who manage to convert to Catholicism his main wife, his mother, his heir and main wife of his father. Yongli himself probably waited with the conversion as bargaining chip for the help he needed. Yongli send Polish Jesuit Michał Boym for him to gather help, but European Catholic powers assumed it was a forgone conclusion that Southern Ming will fell, and tried to stop Boym multiple times from reaching to Catholic monarchs and then returning him back to China. Boym did not manage to return Yongli dying somewhere in China, but one of the Chinese courtiers who went him on the journey managed to return to Yongli, but unfortunately he had only thoughts and prayers.

The worst-case scenario forgets that, in our timeline, Hong Xiuquan abdicated in all but name in 1853. By 1856, the two maddest of the Taiping leaders, Hong Xiuquan and Yang Xiuqing, were out of the picture and the “saner” leaders were actually trying to win the war. With Hong Xiuquan out of the picture, it matters less to the fate of Hong Rengan’s modernization plans if the Taipings take Beijing without modernization.

I think even a modernized Taiping china would still need to let European powers to keep their treaty ports (at least till the Great War) but might be able to renegotiate the specifics of them and alot of other concessions especially railroads and similar inland investments successfully. Further if modernization is particularly successful I can see them getting a variety of them back over time anyways with probably Hong Kong being the only more long term hold out.

My man Christianity spread like wildfire when given legitimacy (i.e victory over the Machus) and a theocratic state built upon it would have increased that speed faster remember china already have a established christian community during this period their persecution however after the Taiping rebellion and the communist revolution targeted them specifically is the reason why china have very little christians in it.
