New Zealand is hiding a secret. Underneath it is an entire underwater continent. This is Zealandia! What if Zealandia never actually sank? How would this change world history? Here is one scenario.

I feel like the Dutch may have decided to colonize New Zealandia and Australia if this timeline existed. The Dutch mainly avoided colonizing the region due to a lack of resources, however with Zealandia there'd be two viable places for colonization that are near one another.

To our Dutch friends: Yes, it is true Dutch seafarers discovered Western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. However, the reason why the Dutch never colonised these areas is simple: the Dutch, at that time (16th and 17th centuries) were more interested in seeking out opportunities for trade, rather than establishing any kind of major settlement beyond trading posts. And, I must say, they soon realised that there was nothing for them there trade-wise. So, they, quite understandably, concentrated on what would become the Dutch East Indies, or modern Indonesia. That said, I must point out, as someone who studied British Imperialism at uni, AlternateHistoryHub left out one VERY important factor: at the same time Cook was nosing about the region, so were the French. And once the existence of a place like Zelandia had been made known, I can guarantee the French would have been out to colonise it themselves like a shot! I leave it to you to imagine what the outcome of throwing the French in would be.

So, there's one quibble I have with this: The East Australian Current runs further west than you have it running in this vid, pretty much down the coast of Queensland to Byron Bay, where it then heads out into the Pacific, past Lord Howe Island and eventually hitting the North Island of New Zealand. With the above land mass, you'd still have warm water heading south through the gap and the west coast of Zealandia, with a confluence where this warmer water meets the cold waters of the Southern Circumpolar Current is turned north by the southernmost tip of Zealandia. Amongst other things, this means you'd have one heck of a fishery off of the coast of New South Wales/Western Zealandia, because you'd have cold nutrient rich water meeting warm water (a real-world example of this is where the Labrador Current meets the Gulf Stream around Newfoundland, which made the Northwest Atlantic Cod Fishery). I don't know if it would be as big as said industry, but it would still probably be pretty impressive. It would also mean that Eastern Australia would probably be about the same temperature-wise as in real life, but really importantly, it would likely be wetter along the Southeast coast. You could end up with temperate rainforest all the way down to Melbourne. Another effect of all this is that when Federation comes up in the late 19th century, it's going to change everything. New Zealand very nearly ended up a state of Australia IRL, and if it's a more fertile land than Australia is, then it may end up being populous enough that when the arguments for Federation start, it's New Zealand arguing about if Australia should join their federation instead of the other way around. And if you do end up with the two as one state, it changes everything for the First Australians. The Treaty of Waitangi gives a legal precedent for a similar treaty to be made with the First Australians, so they don't get treated as wildlife until 1963, they would have had recognised land rights nearly 100 years before they got them IRL, and so many other cruelties and privations that were legitimised in Australia would not have happened. I'm not saying it would have made racism magically disappear from Australia, but it would have improved matters a lot.
@joomz794
@joomz794 9 ай бұрын
Was going to comment this. In this situation I would almost guarantee that New Zealand would become a part of Australia, or like you said, maybe the other way around, seeing as in this timeline he has the British win total victory over the Māori, there would be no treaty preventing New Zealand from federating with Australia.

@malusignatius 6 ай бұрын
@@gabrielsilva-pl3dx The east coast would be wetter, yes, but the natural state for much of the East Coast of Australia's already wet temperate forest/rainforest anyway (What early European colonisers saw was the result of 30,000+years of land management from the First Australians). We do have some good soils along that coast, but inland you're going to still have the issue of Australian soil being leached and old (and as a result poor in a lot of key minerals like phosphorous). The rains also aren't likely to proceed far inland because of the Great Dividing Range.

Well, assuming humans existed in such a world we wouldn't have one great unified civilization. Swapping the Oceans and The Land creates massive (and I do mean massive) regions of desert and rocky badland that stretch for thousands of miles. Much like sailing ships had to have months worth of rations when crossing the ocean, caravans would have to have months worth of rations for crossing the Hellish Pacific Landmass. Rivers wouldn't help much either, as they'd be too densely populated with trees and other flora to be navigable. The civilizations of the world would be isolated to the world's coastlines. What are "Islands" to us would be giant lakes to act as safe havens in a harsh desert.

@@Solace6428 I feel the youtuber has a fundamental absence of knowledge about the colonization of New Zealand and Australia. First Australia was multiple penal settlements. A significantly large portion of the earliest colonizers of Australia did not go their by choice. Both Australia and New Zealand were just too far away for many people to chose to immigrate there during the 18th or even 19th centuries. Secondly, New Zealand had it's native vs colonizer wars, and it resulted in a certain treaty. Now that does not mean that there is no racial issues, but it certainly was not in the same ballpark as the USA or Australia (FFS, in the 1890s, The NEw Zealand government at that time, thought Australia was TOO racist, and that they would try to treat the Maori like they did the Aborigines and start more wars, so New Zealand refused to join the Commonwealth of Australia. FFS, a Maori could own land and vote in the 1800s, something the Australians and the Americans would see as totally alien). I

I got worried for a second that he'd somehow found out about our super kiwis but it was just a sarcastic joke lol. Don't worry guys, Project Flying Kiwi is still a go. Repeat, Flying Kiwi is still a go. Actually this interests me. New Zealand doesn't have native terrestrial mammals and so with a larger landmass a much more diverse and resilient ecosystem may have appeared. With the arrival of the Maori, rats, and pigs and such, I still think the ecosystem would have been damaged but perhaps some now extinct species like Moa and Haast's Eagle would be alive today. Regarding the wars. Despite the Maori being technologically outgunned they were not fools, and had a long established warrior culture with many wars against other tribes. The larger landmass could have lessened the warrior nature of the Maori- with resources being more plentiful- as easily as it could have increased it- with more room for more people. Overall, the larger land area, combined with the Maori being one of the quicker peoples to adapt to european colonialism, could well mean the Maori wars may have been longer and harder than they were.

ohh, i was worried for a second that project flying kiwi was compromised. New Zealand actually didn't split from Australia, it actually split from Gondwana (85million years ago) it was connect to the areas of gondwana which eventually became South america (explains how similar our plant life is) Antarctica and part of the northern island was connected to what would become Australia. When the asteroid his earth it plummeted the worlds temperatures, as New Zealand was already very cold and there was only a small amount of fauna on the islands to begin with, the small amount was basically wiped out and since new Zealand never made contact with another land mass after the extinction event there was no way for big animals to be reintroduced, only the birds, bats, insects, and reptiles were able to come across the ocean by storm or were able to survive the extension event. TLDR new Zealand didn't really break off from Australia, extention event killed everything big, no way for big stuff to get back to new zealand - so thats why we have lame animals.

I'd feel like the Maori would have been very powerful in this timeline, since they would have access to ores and other resources that are far scarcer on the smaller islands, so it could have happened that they put up enough of a fight to still be a majority population on Zealandia and subsequently, Australia would have been overrun less. I'd also think that this ethnical divide would pretty much be the mountains, with the europeans being better equipped to withstand cold environments.
@ChrisNinjaEagle
@ChrisNinjaEagle 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time Natives lose the fights against the colonizers because of the diseases the colonizers bring, so they would need resistance to diseases to put up a good fight, which they _would_ get if there were enough easy to domesticate animals on Zealandia.

I think that would depend on whether polynesian settlers arrived on this landmass earlier than in our timeline, bearing in mind that just like our timeline they would probably not have technologies like mining, metallurgy or gunpowder when they first arrived and so would have to discover these naturally. Even if they did arrive earlier they would probably not have discovered these technologies before contact with European settlers as it took most civilisations thousands of years to develop them, unless we postulate earlier contact between this land and say Chinese explorers which enables an earlier transfer of technologies and skills.

A few things, One. It would of taken a lot longer for Japan to surrender, as they had this thing going where they never surrender. Two Japan, would most likely be split like Korea, as the USSR was going to invade Japan. And America, kinda didn't want that to happen, so what they would both do a land invasion to try to take the most land. Three. WWIII. Nukes were pretty much the only thing keeping the USSR and the US from strangling each other, all it would take is the right thing for that to happen, it's possible that Korea, could be such thing that started WWIII, as it would be possible that after those two started fighting, then Japan would, and then dominoes fall and its capitalism vs communism. Who would win? This would be an extremely tough call. However, at this point, it's most likely that the U.S would win. At this point, its likely plenty of European country's under soviet control would try to rebel, as they didn't like the communist control over them. Though, it's most likely that the USSR would take over more of Western Europe before getting pushed back, as for Asia, Korea and Japan would most likely be full communists with China's help, though Australia and New Zealand would keep China at bay, at least for a while. Some would think that after the USSR fall to the allies that there would be peace, this wouldn't be the case. At this point many people would see a pattern, on both sides, every 10 to 20 years, there's a huge war. One or both sides would realize, that so long as there were two sides, there would never be peace. Chances are, China looses. After this the leaders of the world would be extremely worrisome about any rouge country, they would try too keep any land they have, as they would fear another huge power starting another war. This could prevent independence for African and some Asian Countries. Though it's likely they would eventually get independence. So, ironically, weapons or mass destruction kept peace better without them

Hmmm, because I am "that guy", I'd like to point out that Australia had been colonized for 40,000 years before New Zealand by the aboriginals. Given that the Zealandian continent would be much closer to Australia, wouldn't there be a pretty high chance of aboriginals populating the continent first? Especially if the land is much more fertile than Australia's, that could have changed the development of civilization in the South Pacific...
@lastbreathsigh
@lastbreathsigh 7 жыл бұрын
Aboriginal Australians didn't have the transport needed to cross big bodies of water. Their most advanced vessels were bark canoes. Also, they weren't any of the stress factors (e.g. overpopulation) that normally lead to colonisation.

Yeah, my thinking was that, given that they made it to Tasmania, they probably had the capability of building seacraft to make it over to Zealandia if there wasn't a land-bridge. As an Australian this is particularly interesting. The Dutch actually reached Australia in the early 1600s, and New Zealand in 1642. They didn’t take a huge amount of interest though, and I wonder if they would have in this situation. I imagine though that it would still have been the British who first tried to colonise. The Chinese probably reached Aus much earlier but they had little interest in colonisation and it would be unlikely that they would have found Zealandia in this scenario. I think you would be right in saying that Zealandia would be the greater focus for colonisation, though I wouldn’t imagine the overall migration to Aus/Zealandia to be much higher, just more focused on the latter. Given the presumably much larger population of Maori (MOW-ri), and the real-life history of war with the colonisers (as opposed to in Australia where conflict was largely very localised), the colonisers of Zealandia would probably have much greater difficulty displacing the locals, and should they eventually reign supreme, the country would be much more evenly split between the two ethnicities.

I agree, the Maori wars in New Zealand were impressive. In this reality English would have won eventually but they were worried with the force they had at the time the treaty was signed. In the alternate reality, if the Maori population was bigger, it would have been an interesting fight.

If Zealandia had a big population. England would have done what the did India and elsewhere, support one chief they could control and make him puppet King of Zealandia, train his army. So that King would do the fighting for them to bring all of Zealandia under "civilized control"
@angelfire9011

They didn't conquer New Zealand no, but they would have, England had much more man power than New Zealand, it was committed elsewhere. Cheifs didn't necessarily sign a bad deal, they signed a treaty in Maori, it was incorrectly (some say deliberately) translated into English. Maori did not cede sovereignty in their version, there we're lots of issues with how the Treaty was interpreted.

Depends on if this new continent has the natural resources that Australia currently has. I think it would be most likely that because of Australia's vast wealth of natural ore and minerals Australia would still be a rich, populated country.

What of the Indo-Europeans never existed?
@nekrataali
@nekrataali 7 жыл бұрын
I really doubt technological and scientific progress would have been delayed much, if at all. The conquistadors destroyed tribes in the Americas who were on the eve of industrialization. Without European influence, it's likely the Aztecs would have eventually discovered ways to use metals without needing beasts of burden. This doesn't even get into progress by people in the Middle East and Asia. China and Korea had movable type almost 400 years before the Germans invented it independently on the other side of the world, for example. The major change would be which countries and empires would fight over Europe for its resources. If the Indo-Europeans never existed, the land could very well still be there with large amounts of iron, coal, lumber, fish, etc. that would have been untouched for millennia as people migrated into the area from other parts of the world. This also means no Roman Empire or Greek city-states. You have to wonder about when (not if) other people would move into Europe. Do the Persians settle the entire continent unopposed in 500 BC? Would they then take Europeans' place in history of colonization of the rest of the world? Do Native Americans discover Europe the same way the Vikings stumbled on North America? Maybe the Egyptians move into Europe in 2000 BC? Could it be all of the above, resulting in multiple nations fighting a series of wars for Europe's resources similar to the Anglo-French wars throughout history?

moscar11 Native Australia sailed to Australia from Africa and constantly traded with native South East Asia Islanders and they used boats and with it being that close native Australians would probably discover it as native Australians the reason they found Australia was via island hopping from Africa so with them being that close to Zealandia it would be likely Australians would get there first
@mattyspeedbuilds457

SOO much of that was incorrect. But to save you from failing history if you go to australia, here's a little tidbit from Wikipedia: Human habitation of the Australian continent is estimated to have begun between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago, possibly with the migration of people by land bridges and short sea-crossings from what is now Southeast Asia. I'm canadian. I knew this shit. Do NOT post shit like that and be confident without researching and maybe, just maybe, you will be able to fake going to highschool. This is also coming from an 11 y/o kid.

Polynesians landed on New Caledonia around 1500 BC, and New Caledonia is part of Zealandia. So they would have landed there a full 2,700 - 2,800 years earlier. They also would have discovered Australia some time afterwards. Because Zealandia would have been more tropical than temperate in the north, the breadfruits, coconut, and bananas that they would be likely to bring on their voyage would survive in the tropical climate, unlike with the Maori. So they would have a more varied diet. Maybe on this voyage the pigs and chickens they would have brought with them could have also survived. There would be fighting between Australian Aborigines and these Polynesians initially, but because they would have few infectious diseases to spread the Aborigines numbers would not decline and eventually they would adopt agriculture around the eastern coast of Australia, growing taro, yam, coconut, bananas, breadfruit, and having domesticated chickens and pigs. You would have new languages forming between the austronesian language of the Polynesians, and the local Aboriginal languages. Maybe Aboriginal languages in the East would slowly become extinct. There would be no Moa or other flightless birds on Zealandia because there would be marsupial mammals on Zealandia. There would be large megafauna that the Polynesians would hunt and drive to extinction over the next few hundred years, but there would still be remaining more biodiversity than currently exists, such as animals similar to the Tasmanian tiger and maybe a Zealandian equivalent of a kangaroo, etc.
