@yourdagan Жыл бұрын
Everything that relies upon low HP strategies like Berry boosts (Reversal, Swarm, etc.) would become viable. Games would last longer on average as Leftovers healing is no longer nullified. Things that were manageable under Sandstorm become much harder to faint, such as Suicune. Substitute strategies too become much more viable: Alakazam, Raikou, Charizard to a certain extent, Suicune perhaps.

@@yourdagan you seem to know a lot about gen 3 OU. I think snorlax is another big mention here for no perma sand meta. Imo the coolest thing about scizor would be the fact that its u-turn could be swarm boosted, something you basically never see gen 4+ due to technician. I still don't think it would be that great due to fire coverage being so good in adv, but due to the generally lower power level (+ no specs) it might be fairly manageable to get it into swarm consistently to fire off at least one insanely powerful cb u-turn. Even if it doesn't outright ko you likely get to bring in any fast/frail mon to threaten/clean up due to scizor's speed, jolteon might see more use from situations like this. Dug would probably get banned though with how much easier it is to get in.
@roidadadou5456 Жыл бұрын
Also tried it out, I've never seen Flygon be as good as that. Saw lower usage on Bi and Rachi of course, because their setup sets are top notch. Moltres was a very frequent user, pivoting on the very rare Fire Blast absorber like Blissey was incredible. But the one who benefited the most from it was of course the goat Scizor (although I think Bullet Punch also helped in that regard). And of course, with Turn in the tier, Dugtrio's usages skyrocketed.

It would be interesting to discuss what if Dondozo was in RBY or GSC since it's basically a physically defensive foil to Lax
@mighark54 Жыл бұрын
I was reading some comments about how Gen 3 feels wrong to them because of the lack of physical-special split, particularly how some mons didn't have any STAB moves of their higher attacking stat, and that made me wonder how would the game look like if STAB wasn't a thing. The physical special split was a change that made a lot of sense, but also contributed to the powercreep by giving almost all mons a high power STAB move that comes off of their higher attacking stat. I wonder how the game would be affected if you removed that multiplier, or possibly lowered it if outright removing it was too big of a change. Don't think it would help mixed attackers which is another noticeable loss from the split but it would be an interesting thought anyway.

I'm curious to know how it'll affect Forretress' viability in particular. Like if it'll be close to being on equal footing to Skarmory as a spiker
@yourdagan Жыл бұрын
@@SoulJunAs a Defensive Wall, Forretress is a lot less reliable than Skarmory, due to vulnerability to Ground, Spikes, Flying, 4x Fire, and inability to phaze. It does switch in well against Metagross, and being able to slow turn out provides a much needed opening for something faster to come out and threaten it. They may want to switch out anyway, not wanting to be Earthquake'd or Spikes fodder, so Volt Switch allows it to regain momentum even in the event of a switch. But, Flygon and Claydol are favored switch-ins against Forretress, so there remains an element of risk U-Turn doesn't have. Volt Switch also would allow it to chip Skarmory or catch Gengar switching in in order to bring in a Pursuit user instantly instead of letting Gengar get a move in, which is highly valuable. Volt Switch would allow Forretress to not be as much of a momentum sink for offensive teams specifically, and thus I think its usage in that team style could rise. Defensively, Zap Cannon would still be preferable since it allows Forretress to sit on Skarmory---you wouldn't want to switch out to anything else in most circumstances if it's staying in.
@SoulJun Жыл бұрын
@@yourdaganI see, appreciate the insight! What would be a typical offense team that uses Forretress?
@yourdagan Жыл бұрын
@@SoulJun I've been thinking about it because there's no obvious answer. It's hard to say. As it is, Forretress isn't a go-to mon for offensive teams. Too many random fire moves, a momentum-sapper without clicking Explosion, and easy to whittle down or muscle through, compared to Skarmory. With Volt-Switch, which wouldn't work on some key Ground types anyway, there is generally not enough good mons that can take advantage of such an opening enough to justify whatever damage Forretress may have taken to enable it. It would help trappers primarily, like Magneton Dugtrio and Pursuit users, as most offensive threats that don't trap are too easy to wall. They'd have to be Choice Band to get mileage. So the closest things to gen3ou Volt Switch Forretress would be teams that want Spikes or Rapid Spin, have at least one trapper, and at least one Choice Band user. There was a guy on ladder a month or two ago who was using a sort of Eeveelution team (for Baton Pass and Wish) with Forretress and Slaking that wasn't actually terrible; Volt Switch gives a safe and easy in to these guys.

@yourdagan Жыл бұрын
Because for years tiering action on old gen lower tiers was frozen. And the people in charge of Gen 3 UU specifically are extremely inert and complacent with the status quo. Realistically most of current UUBL should be the real UU and a bunch of the worst mons in current UU would be shuffled into an RU. The NU situation isn't even this bad, as they wound up making a PU tier beneath it to distinguish the "NU" mons that weren't really viable there. Meanwhile UU continues to hold onto mons nobody really uses, some of which stopped being viable because of the (inane) Baton Pass ban specifically. So UUBL continues to exist as it is because the UU council and playerbase wants to keep it that way.

But idk how it would play in a gen 3-4 environment (esp gen 3 cause no rocks/u-turn/roost/no physical special split and just overall lower power level). I think the weather setters and abusers would receive the same bans they did in gen 5. But honestly besides that i think it could be pretty fun/interesting: flame body moltres burning a metagross mash, or even a jirachi ice/fire punch on the switch! Or toxic heal breloom being a better version than it already is in gen 3. Or toxic heal gliscor being an unkillable god in gen 4, or sturdy working as it does in later gens so skarm is even more obnoxious to deal with, and forretress is a tiny bit better. Because decades ago when gen 3 was more recent, the tiering action was more biased and haphazard and careless, so a lot of mons that simply weren't liked being dealt with got banned. Years after the fact, complacency and inertia made people not want to change the metagame much, and thus the bans remained even as they were being reexamined by the community at large in terms of their ridiculousness and indefensibility with respect to actual power levels. Only now in the past year or two have they begun slowly unbanning UUBL mons one at a time. How would the gen 3 ou look if metagross had access to cm or sd? Or any good boosting move that is not hone claws
@yourdagan Жыл бұрын
Metagross becomes more unpredictable and a viable special attacker with Calm Mind. However its special attack and movepool is still worse than Jirachi's. With Swords Dance it becomes overbearing. Curse wouldn't be too desirable but White Herb could make the set a thing.

Hariyama is still making some waves but I don't think it's enough yet for the council to feel like rising it (and dropping Cloyster). The fact they rose Charizard but not Hariyama makes me believe inertia will continue to reign. But even if it rose, it would still be on the low end of popularity and usage without a significant effort to make its sets and preferred team structures known and easily accessible. Hariyama advocacy is currently not where it needs to be to make a tiering change a sure-thing.

@@yourdagan id like to hear more about cloyster dropping off. Is it because of the rise of claydol? Is it how it matches up poorly against starm? Or just completely outclassed by skarm?
@yourdagan Жыл бұрын
@@rubadub15 Ice is the worst defensive typing in the tier. Nullifies its bulk when it can just get Rock Slide'd or Focus Punch'd to death. It also has no real Special Defense to speak of. Cloyster's defensive utility is low, and gen3ou teams largely cannot afford to run 2 waters, especially when one does little to nothing you'd want the Water type to do, like wall Salamence, Tyranitar, Metagross, Swampert, and so on. Yes, it can Spikes; yes, it can't be Magneton trapped. But it lacks the longevity of Forretress and Skarmory thanks to Sand weakness. Yes, it has Rapid Spin, but gets Toxic stalled and threatened out by Gengar. Yes, it has Explosion, but then you no longer have Cloyster. Yes, Water and Ice stab are good, but it's slow and not especially powerful. Cloyster's niche is being an untrappable Spiker with mild offensive and defensive utility. It outshines Skarmory and Forretress only on teams where forward momentum is of the utmost importance. But such teams are hard to optimize even without addressing the drawbacks of including Cloyster, and they are unforgiving in nature and thus relatively inconsistent compared to a team with Skarmory and Skarmory support; and unlike Forretress, it doesn't beat Skarmory. Cloyster is a jack of trades that's not the best at anything it does, and is a liability in itself. Even Glalie can guarantee at least one layer of Spikes Turn 1. Cloyster requires specific team support and structuring that is currently not in vogue. It really is just that simple that Skarmory is easier to fit, because it does way more.

Really big buff, especially for certain sets like Belly Drum, but Rest would still be highly desirable. It could conceivably terrifically boost its viability in gen1ou and gen2ou and even gen3ou, but giving up Rest also makes certain strategies already used to deal with it more effective too, as it can no longer shrug them off with Rest.

It's still a gimmick that isn't a thing, same as Camerupt though. This is a mon that could actually benefit significantly from Volt Switch, as it's currently a big momentum sap aside from simply being weak.
Forretress usage would be on par with Skarmory's. Tentacruel and Omastar and Qwilfish and even Roselia usage in OU skyrocket compared to now. Tentacruel becomes even more vital and integral to current UU's metagame. Hopefully it induces more Steel type unbans, which are already needed in this Toxic spamming metagame.

Gengar nerfed and no longer obvious preferred Spinblocker, Claydol usage goes down drastically, Flygon becomes nigh worthless and drops to UUBL or even UU. Spikes management becomes even more critical to the tier as there becomes no feasible way of ignoring it. Without Levitate the Superman archetype dies completely.
