What If Vegeta didn't turn Majin and fought Dabura instead of Gohan?

In the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z, Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan enter Babidi’s ship with the goal of stopping Buu’s resurrection. Of course, we all know that things changed when Gohan fought Dabura and was unable to defeat the King of Demons which led to Vegeta’s frustration and Majin Vegeta. This all spiraled out of control extremely quickly, but what if we changed that last fight? Maybe have Gohan fight PuiPui or just have Vegeta’s frustrations lead to him entering the fight with Dabura himself? What would happen? Can the prince of Saiyans beat the king of demons?
So, let’s go with the second option. Vegeta has defeated PuiPui and Goku has defeated Yakon. Leading to Gohan’s battle with Dabura which goes exactly the same up until the moment that Vegeta says he’ll finish off Dabura himself. Before Goku can interject, Vegeta transforms and is in front of Dabura ready to blast him away. Now the real battle begins. Vegeta blasts Dabura to the ground and yells at Gohan to go to the sidelines - this is no time for games and he isn’t wasting anymore of it waiting for Gohan to mess it up.
Goku is about to say something, but Gohan flies down and tells him to just let Vegeta handle it. Dabura is stronger than he thought and he may be too weak to handle him now. Goku accepts Gohan’s decision and Dabura flies up from the ground. He taunts Vegeta, saying that it’s about time they took him seriously, but Vegeta shakes his head. He tells Dabura that it’s still a one on one but this time he’s not making it out alive. So the two fly at each other and the fight begins.
Now the answer to who wins this fight is a bit more confusing than some may give it credit for. Of course, Vegeta is confident he can beat Dabura, but can he actually? To start, we actually need to find out two things, whether or not he can use Super Saiyan 2 before turning Majin and the strength of Vegeta before he turns Majin.These are actually harder to answer than you may think.

There is no way Vegeta wouldn't have SS2. We all know that after the cell games Vegeta would not rest until he too broke through the wall. Seeing what it took for GohanvCell, he would figure it out.

Still would be weaker then goku though as the majin boost was stated to be significant and also provide other benefits like increased pain tolerance and stamina. Without it he would not be a match for goku's ssj2. Even with he was only able to match him. If vegeta is able to go ssj2 without the form he would be on the lower-mid end of the spectrum more then likely. Goku was on upper level...mastered it...and moved on to unlock a form beyond it via ssj3 :3

Goku does that regularly. The best example is when he was facing Cooler and he knew Cooler was stronger, he still resorted to using Kaioken first before attempting SSJ. Goku vs Vegeta round 2. Goku held back SSJ3 knowing that if he'd just KO'ed Vegeta he could have possibly avoided the entire conflict. Goku vs Goku Black the first time, there was no reason why Goku shouldn't have instantly went SSJB and killed him. That's just how Saiyans are. Is it smart? No. But if they all thought like this, conflicts would end before they began. No Perfect Cell, and no Buu.

Actually, Vegeta killing Dabura makes more of a significant change than you think. Without Majin Buu in the story, Kid Buu will never die and become Uub, and Moro would end up likely killing Goku and Vegeta on New Namek, due to the lack of any intervention from the Grand Supreme Kai. Now, there is a possibility that Merus decides to tell Shin and Kibito about the Grand Supreme Kai in Buu, but that also depends on if the egg containing Buu was destroyed or not. If it was, then that means that Moro wins and everyone dies. And even if Buu wasn't destroyed, there are factors such as time, Buu's compliance or noncompliance and Buu's strength. To me, this timeline's doomed.

Wait... Who thinks Dabura would be relative in strength to Vegeta? Goku and Vegeta compare his ki to that of Cell, and even if they mean Super Perfect Cell, Cell Games SSJ2 Gohan was still well stronger than that after getting one arm fucked up, and Buu Saga Goku and Vegeta have both surpassed that Gohan (albeit only narrowly).

This is easy. Vegeta was SSJ2 during the 7 years time skip. He was confident in beating gohan at the tournament. Plus vegeta knew gpku was ssj2 after yakkon. 3. Maijin powerups dont upgrade ssj forms. Vegeta was confident in beating dabura as a ssj1 before it was revealed he had ssj2. Goku and Vegeta thought dabura was a nobody magic aside. Yeah goku was very disappointed in gohan's performance and vegeta was extremely frustrated with it, so I'm pretty sure it's also narratively implied that either of these two would easily steamroll dabura at this point. Probably with the same diff as yakkon and pui pui.

I still think that Vegeta's fight with Dabura would be so one-sided that Vegeta would treat him like a punching bag, abusing him the entire time and laughing at him for being the "king of demons" and being so weak. On top of that he would be yelling at Kakarot the entire time saying that Gohan has gotten weak and he wants to finish this quickly so they can have their fight to see who truly is the strongest. And THAT would be the trigger to make Babadi turn him Majin getting Buu released.

Huh? 🤔 So there isn't much of a change to cannon, but No Majin Buu, Vegeta and Goku have a much more friendlier fight here, Goku doesn't come back to life until BOG, and Gohan gets back to training again after the Buu Saga, but doesn't get the Ultimate Form till later cool. I'm glad you acknowledged Vegeta was able to go SSJ2 at that point. My theory that goes back to even the 90s was that a typical SSJ2 would be around cell level Gohan, who was in brilliant condition then, the best of his life really. I don't believe him being a teen affected an upper limit. Vegeta's SSJ2 would have been comparable in my opinion. Goku's SSJ2 is OP because he's mastered SSJ2, he knows the next form, SSJ3. This is comparable to SSJ1 frieza saga vs cell saga mastered SSJ1. Vegeta knew Goku's SSJ2 form was stronger which is why he went for the Majin booster, to bring him on par.

The Majin power up didn’t cause him to immediately be in a SSJ2 state. So I always thought if he’s using SSJ when initially being put under the curse, and transforms to SSJ2 later, I figured that way his own doing. Also without the Majin boost in the fight with Pure Boo to buy time for Goku’s SSJ3, Vegeta uses SSJ2 to fight Boo as best he can.

At the end of Buu Saga, either Vegeta or Piccolo needs to present Gohan a possibility: A time where his father, Vegeta or Piccolo aren’t around or aren’t enough. A time where Gohan’s family is in danger but due to him getting soft, he can’t protect them. Arrogance and complacency are Gohan’s biggest weaknesses. If he wants a life as a scholar and eventually a husband and father, he’ll have to stay strong enough to protect those goals.

I have a few bits of evidence to prove gohan is in SSJ2 during his fight with dabura 1: dabura was stated by goku to be as strong (or even stronger than) super perfect cell, gohan would have literally no reason to hold back 2: gohan's exhaustion, if gohan WAS struggling against dabura and he was in SSJ1, why didn't he just transform higher? he did it against buu's egg and kibito, so why not against dabura? 3: there is a very small yet conclusive detail that shows up with adult gohan, he has a big piece of hair sticking out, a bang, simple enough right? well it gets deeper. in base, its just the bang and nothing else, in SSJ2 its the same story, but in SSJ1, there is a tiny stand of hair under the bang, helping to differentiate SSJ1 from SSJ2. And mind you this tiny detail is reoccurring in EVERY piece of media adult gohan is in, and in the dabura fight, there is no tiny strand of hair

2:33 This here is your biggest flaw in your theory...... You forgot that Babidi measured the energy output of Goku at this point; while Dabura was present. Babidi measured Goku's energy output as 3,000 Kili, to which Dabura replied that even a being of 4,000 Kili could not harm him... implying that he's a significant amount stronger than that..... (How much we don't know but I would say 5,000). There you have it, in manga canon, that Dabura is stronger SSJ Goku, who at this moment is undoubtedly stronger than SSJ Gohan. This is important because you scale Dabura as roughly even with Gohan, despite it not being true. At least in my interpretation of manga, Dabura was toying with Gohan, and WAS NOT getting tired out by their battle.... And it's CLEAR. Goku himself states that he underestimated Dabura's strength, something Vegeta agrees with after they witness him in battle, although Vegeta still believes they could beat him. And this of AFTER Goku pins Dabura's power level to be in the same league as Cell's. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT because in Japan, there is no difference between Perfect Cell and Super Perfect Cell, like what we do here in the west. Meaning Dabura is somewhere around Super Perfect Cell's power level BEFORE he even starts fighting seriously against Gohan. ( Which doesn't matter since Teen ssj2 Gohan and ssj2 Goku both surpassed that by far, however Vegeta most likely didn't since it took a Majin boost to get him to match Goku at that level....) In addition to this, in the panels you show in this video to try to support your argument of them being roughly even, despite the fact that you can CLEARLY see that is not the case. For example: 3:49 Look at this panel, tell me who looks exhausted and worn out and who doesn't. Gohan is hunched over, sweating, and breathing heavily. Meanwhile Dabura hasn't even broken a sweat and is most definitely poised to continue the fight. He's just frustrated and tossing his sword aside since Gohan managed to break it... In every single panel of the manga, Dabura is dominating and has control of the battle..... It's not even close, only the anime made it appear as though they were even, to which Dabura STILL has the edge. Even after this battle Dabura literally calls Gohan trash. And is more than confident that he could beat him if they have to fight again....... And Dabura isn't a fool, he's smart, he isn't too overconfident or proud, he knows when to take a threat seriously. Remember, this is the guys that knew instantly after getting dropped by Buu the first time that he was NO MATCH for him and suggested to Babidi to team up with him and destroy Buu while they had a chance. There aren't many villians in Dragonball that have done this. I think a battle between Dabura and SSJ2 Vegeta (without Majin Boost) would be a lot closer then you give it credit for even if SSJ2 Vegeta does has a bit of an edge in power (which he my not because it's not clear). TL;DR Anyone who reads with comment, go look at the manga yourself online. Dabura is a lot stronger than what he's being given credit for in this video. A battle between him and Vegeta would be a lot closer then people think. Vegeta won't be running in and killing Dabura with ease. He is a veteran fighter with both strength and intelligence and is confirmed to be at least in the realm of Cell by Goku BEFORE fighting more seriously to which Goku admits he is a lot stronger than he originally thought, additionally confirmed by Vegeta, and he still wasn't going all out.

While it'd certainly make for a short season, this version of events is a lot cleaner and satisfying! This is minor, but note SS3 is supposedly more effective with the resilience of a dead Goku body, meaning a more close fight with Beerus.

Vegeta did have ssj2 before Majin. I remember when King Yemma explained he couldn’t restore the body of Vegeta after being Majin so instead he brought back his previous body, the one before turning Majin. And Vegeta turned Ssj 2 with that body, meaning that he already had access to ssj2. His mind and memories may be the same but just like ssj3 his body must be physically stable to handle such a power like that. Ssj2 is easier than ssj3 obviously but at this point Vegeta wouldn’t have trouble going ssj2 since he’s physically capable of handling that power.

I agree with everything, but you gotta remember angry SSJ2 Gohan gets both the SSJ2 multiplier along with his potential multiplier (whatever multiplier you believe that to be)

I think some argument here is that Vegeta knows Goku had extreme mastery upon the form he shows against Yakon, like he had upon his ssj form fighting Cell. Vegeta had unlocked that form but not necessarily to the fullest like kinda always in DBZ. Babidi's power shows how much one can grow over his own potential.

Only thing I don’t agree with is Vegeta being weaker than Gohan from the Cell Saga. Vegeta was confident he could beat him if they fought at the tournament and when he sees Gohan at his house he tells him “you look out of shape.” Later on he tells him you were once stronger than me but how about now? So he doesn’t actually know how weak Gohan is but he believes he can beat him he doesn’t actually see how much power Gohan lost until the tournament and when he sees that he’s disappointed. Going by all of that Vegeta definitely passed Gohan and Goku was even higher than both of them which led to him wanting to get that power up so they could be even.
