- 5 lakh+ Indian students seek study abroad per annum
- 6,500 HNIs are expected to leave India this year (according to the Henley Private Wealth Migration Report 2023)

Nailed it.. Work culture and work life balance are worst in India. Managers/teachers are like 'Gabbar singh' or treats others like slaves. People have become blind by patriotism - believes that India is the best, which in turn makes them feel that there is no improvement needed. Another funny belief, 'we are great because we are the 5th largest economy'. Come on kiddo, Its like a family of 10 being proud that they are earning close to what their neighbour who is single. We need to teach people basic maths to understand such things instead of making them arrogant and egoic by injecting false narratives.

Only reason i dont want to leave india is.. i want to see my parents and my kids with me.. i m currently earning in lakhs in India n properly settled. But after so many years of practice, i hv understood that ur biggest asset is your family. Just imagine, what will happen to you if ur kids too will leave u at your old age.. u wont hv ur parents, ur friends of young age with u... n u will be all alone at old age.. yes, india is progressing, we hv many flaws but still we hv culture... That is our real wealth.. if u dont judge ourselves with others in terms of money n dont watch too much digital World, dont keep bad habbits, persue spirituality at our level then u can live peacefully n happily even with good amount of money.. the one who is unhappy in India, wont remain happy anywhere in the world. You are earning in lacs , that's why u are happy in India. Just keeping kids and parents with you is not everything. Providing them facilities and a good lifestyle requires money. Have you ever thought of the youth graduating in hoards every year. We live in 2023 but still doctor or engineer is the most preferred career trajectory for them. Not every youth could be doc or engineer. Education in India needs reform. Practical aspects have to be given more weight.

I had lived for long in 5 countries including USA and UK. It's not opportunity rather its escape from responsibility. Movement is not just from country to country. It's from village to city, city to metro, etc. Who wants to take care of old parents, social responsibility? It's always easy to have life without responsibility. I had very easy life outside India but didn't see any purpose as life in western countries is highly monotonous.

@gourimisra6050. *it's not matter of just money it's matter of time vs money* :- am an Indian living in norway. I get 8 times higher the salary I used to get in India. My insurance maturity amount, my retirement security my dream house and my dream business startup were all possible to me before the age of 35 just because of my job in norway which is just for 5 years. For the same I should have spent 20 years in india. My father spent 50years of his life just to look after our family and our education just with one dream that I'll be with him during his old age. I would rather go abroad for 5-8 years and take retirement before the age of 50 and stay with my dad than be a frustrated Indian who still work at the age of 55 (when my father is at his 80s) That's again a personal choice. 😊

It is a very general stereotyping. You do not need to stay under the same roof to take responsibility of your parents. Most of my friends bought a home for their parents in India before turning 30 which is impossible to do if you work in India & they did this while they were living on rent. While people living with their parents under the same roof still use their parents money to buy iPhones & weddings. Offcourse there are different kinds on people on both the sides & everything is a personal choice. You can choose to live abroad & make your parents experience that part of the world too.

Thank you for this video. 6 years ago , exactly like you , I had packed my bags and had come back to india. Like you I too love being in India. Just after the horror of the 2nd covid had hit india, I got another job offer in the US, and just because Covid restrictions were relaxing in the US , and at that time I was not sure what was the next situation in India , I decided to come back to the US..But you are one of the few Indians who talk realistically about what’s happening in India.. False patriotism, Jingoism and chest Thumping doesn’t alter the reality of a person’s life. That’s what’s happening to a lot of people, to whom basic common sense is uncommon. I know that when you decide to settle in a foreign country you've to give up on so many things in long term, people realise that only after few years and then they can't come back to India for various reasons. Despite all the shortcomings in West and good things in India, there's one more aspect which upper middle class Indians look up to and that is crime and corruption. Indian police, judiciary and bureaucracy is a nightmare. Because of autocratic tendency everyone tries to exploit you and you know that you will never get justice when you are up against someone powerful. Basically if you don't have right connections, your life will be very vulnerable, you'll know that only when your ship hits the rock.

Agree with alot of video points 1. Work culture in India is bad 2. Working outside is nice for standard of living and more relaxed work culture as worked in 4 countries besides India But do need to note that even though the salary outside the country is higher the work is almost of 2 persons in India . But even with it people dont get stressed due to less micromanagement. (Why i say that work is more, consider if you work in same industry in India and outside India the industry is selling same product, the cost if final product would be in same range. So somewhere that amount is cut, my experience in costing tells me this.

In India, as a nuclear family household, aim to cross 60 lacs per year after taxes (5 lacs pm in hand), and you will clearly see why India is a better choice. In Bangalore - Whitefield, where I live there are many families in my apartment complex who earn more than this, and quality of life here is great. There are no work-life balance issues in good tech companies (Intel, Cisco, Qualcomm, Unilever etc), and the quality of education in IB schools is very good. Yes, many Indians would have given up on their citizenships, but in my social circle, many who were working abroad came back here because life is better here after a certain income level. Also, many do not even accept opportunities to go aboard because they will have to give up on their set life here. And PPP really makes you rethink about opportunities abroad when your income in India is also high. In short, wherever you decide to stay, if your income is high you will be content and happy.

This! I think cross even 40 lakhs, send your kids to an IB school, and have a good friend circle and you'll automatically get the advantages of life abroad since you can afford imported products and similar lifestyle. A caveat I should add is, very few people will reach even 30 Lakhs. And perhaps going abroad will provide a quicker salary jump due to the synergistic effect of higher wages and lower competition for a higher position. Also while your lifestyle might be worse abroad, your savings will be much greater if you invest them in India and plan on returning someday

Certainly not. You have to work and drive on your own even at the old age. Can you afford an advocate if needed or a hospital bill for serious medical treatment? You have to be very careful while in outdoors because of gun culture. In India highways and expressways are very smooth and wide now a days unlike in last century. @@curious_one1156 Brother, I agree with you. But as citizens of india, we have a say in every 5 year. In my personal opinion Indian voters are not serious about their roles in elections. Most of the Indian voters vote either for winning party or party which give them money. And rest of the people are not going for voting. We can't make any change from boycotting elections. In case we don't like any of the candidates, we should cast our for for Nota. If NOTA gets more votes than winning candidates then we can speak for a re election. In my view, problem is not only with polticians also with our voters culture.

I agree with a lot of things you've said about India and do feel that it's become much harder for freshers looking for jobs now compared to back in '09 when I got into the job market. With that said, I wonder if in your comparison of a $100k salary in NYC v/s India, you aren't using your own experience from 10 years ago to judge. Because post QE, real estate prices and rentals shot up in the US and especially in NYC and Silicon Valley. So a $100k salary today in these places won't fetch what it used to, which means you have to compete for $200k+ jobs. And this is harder now with recession in the US as well. None of which is to say it is a bad idea to pursue a career in the US, especially in fields where they're doing better and more impactful work than in India but that people should know the reality of what it means to go there today vis a vis up to 2008 or so.

Most Indians live in suburbs in Jersey City and around Silicon Valley. You don’t have to live in Manhattan or SF. I know many people who are managing it well in $100K too in recent times - you ultimately do money management based on what you are earning. Mumbai rents are way higher and commute is killer. There also, people manage if they are prudent. In my days, average salary was $85K and people managed in that too.

But coz of location constraints, I had to switch to another location where I ended up getting a role in Indian based Company (who call themselves as start up even after being in the market for more than 6 years) - trust me, their culture sucks, they know nothing other than politics, in fact they cared more about doing politics than promoting culture and the product - a manager who doesn't wanna take responsibility, HR team who doesn't care about what happens in the office, and few people who calls themselves as leadership team know nothing about being a leader and implement slavery rules - sucks. (At least in the company where I worked)... I'm super fortunate to come out of that environment and get back again into a proper product company.

Staying back is not the only symbol of patriotism. Going out, winning in a competetive world and then helping the motherland from wherever you are--after chieving your potential--is also patriatism. There can be nothing more satisfying than individual growth which results in give-back to India. Well said.

Guys let me hoenstly tell you, the cost of education at a private liberal arts college in the USA is family ruining (~1.5 CR)! I ruined my and my families life by going there and I was a sincere student. The problem is that these colleges accept people not only on marks but on Essays. If you're a good writer you'll get in. But you might not be talented enough to do well in your major. Its the opposite problem of Indian competitive institutes. I went there and took physics because I wanted to be a scientist and knew I had no chance in India. However I didn't know that in college even after studying 4 hours a days i will just barely pass. I ruined my health trying to keep up and all parents savings. Now I'm back and cant get a job. For me it was the worst decision of my life. I could have just focused on health and happiness in high school, taken hotel management in India and lived a modest but happy and healthy life without any guilt of ruining my family. To be fair there are also some of my indian classmates who partied like crazy in college but still got good marks and now work for Google and have very very high salaries. But in my experience for private liberal arts colleges on aggregate only 3 out of 10 are successful. The rest just wasted their parents money. I've seen even Ivy league graduates suffer the same ruin. Don't go if you have to pay full tuition and your family's networth outside primary residence and business networth is less than 15 crore. Please don't. You'll be unable to live with the guilt. Edit: Also people will shame you for coming back as a failure for coming back empty handed. If you're 200% sure you can get a job and somehow win the H1b lottery /manage a phd then go for it. Otherwise urban india also has options. And no shame involved. Edit 2: Yes quality of professors at (good) private liberal arts colleges is Ivy league level! I was taught physics by David Griffiths himself! But I also feel at the undergraduate level sciene and math is mostly still learnt by text books. At berkely I hear that people watch lecture videos which I feel highlights the redundancy of lecturers at the undergraduate level. The education process in the US is amazing of course but it isn't cost effective and not worth it if you're nor wealthy. What I valued the most was there was 0 ragging and no curfew. I was respected like an adult and could leave my dorm whenever I wanted. And teachers didn't make sarcastic comments. But nor did the students misbehave which I admired. When i sat in a few lectures at DU I was disappointed to see students actively chitchating and on their phones. Very very rare in my college but I hear in US state colleges (not prestigious) it's common.

I didn't go to private liberal college, but to a decent university fir a Masters program in Information Systems, but had to return , this was from 2006 to 2008 and I returned in 2010 as I couldn't secure H1B full time position, was not sure or motivated that time about PhD. I can relate to what you said- people will make fun as you returned empty handed..just to tell, I didn't spend that kind of money nor I had those type of resources, but had a RA and covered my tuition!!

Reed is a pricy college and I can imagine how difficulty it would be for an Indian parents to support (Steve Jobs drop out of Reed because he said he initially didn't realize how expensive it was, and after 6 moths he drops, realizing it's too expensive for his middle class American parents to support). Undergrad in US is extremely intense and tough, it's not like Indian University where you can study just before exam and pass with good marks. It's a complete different ballgame. Everyday class, quiz, homework and exam load and then several courses running parallel, all together is too intense and stressful. But US students are habituated with such intense pressure and stress since high school. But for Indian student it would be daunting to manage course load. I think you should Give GRE and and come back to US. Since you have a Physics major from Reed (does it mater whether you barely passed as as long you passed, as degree from Reed is highly valued in physics academia in US), most likely with a good GRE score you will forgiven for bad grades in undergrad and can get a PhD positions in physics/computer science/chemistry. Visa is not a problem for PhD (F1), and once you finish, you will get job immediately (too many jobs nowadays for physics grad), and will get GC immediately under special category (no limit & instant, not like 17 yr wait for software people). Another option is that you can do masters from DU or from some university (does not matter which one) in India just to pick up the grade little-bit and then give GRE.

@@honeysup I am impressed by your astute deductions and knowledge of US colleges. Thank you for your advice as well. A phd is what I went there thinking I will do but I just didn't make the cut in my physics GRE or my applications. I've been fired from several software jobs too so now I am preparing for CAT. If I don't make it I will try becoming a junior HR.

Good video, and the details are subjective and debatable. No wrong in any decision and the reports that you have mentioned I am not sure how much hidden agenda it might have. Politics is everywhere is my take after working in USA for more than 15years may be the percentage of micro management is bit more in india. Coming to India losing jobs in the outsourcing thing due to AI those are theoretical threats because when computer came people started raising concerns and I am sure there will be different kinds of jobs and we the Indians will learn and reach the goals. Education system needs a super lift I totally agree. யாதும் ஊரே யாவ௫ம் கேளிர் it’s a Tamil statement. I personally feel I have more options I can explore in india rather USA. There are handful of entrepreneurs in India as well just saying. Other side of the grass is always greener. Whatever it is and where ever we are experience is the real teacher. Kudos to your thoughts.

Quick questions mam for you What's the cost of education for a student in the US? How many actually are able to do college? (The fact is recent student's debt waiver grim government is a short terminal bailout for the huge debt students are carrying on them) So please don't claim as a balanced view if you can't put it straight. Secondly, about resources I agree that US is resourcesful. You are comparing a 21 T versus 4T economy. Yet I would highlight that the technology India has now a days is almost at par with that in the US. Don't know who taught you in India I am proud of of all my teachers back in India and owing to which I landed a direct scientist job in the US.Only Disgruntled would be those who blew their parents money in doing an expensive MS and didn't get a job and are burned with education loan back home. And about Pichai and all, just leave them alone. They have achieved it all in the US and can't be yardstick for everything. To me in early 2000s India was a decade behind the US for now its mere 5 years behind and we will close the gap soon than any of us can think.

Hello ma'am thank you so much for your videos. they are very helpful. I am a biology student and I struggle very much living in the US and interacting with American people and globally speaking with people from all over the world basically. I also have a religious background and I feel like being a Hindu and being in science field collide pretty alot. In science biology we learn we all came from apes and chimpanzees in the evolutionary scale, so all human beings are one whole species and everyone is equal. But then why is there so much differences between us and why I can't sometimes see everyone as the same and equal. Please shed some light on this and how we can be more global. Because I still feel like having an indian background pulls me down and makes me feel more/less equal to others. for some reason, it makes me feel inferior/superior but when I study I know we are all just one, so it is just so difficult. Please help. Thank you Nisthaji.

@sunriselotus there is always a struggle when you settle in a new place. If you are from a North Indian state and moving to a South Indian state or vice versa you will find similar struggles. Infact settling in US is much more easier compared to our own country sometimes when you are away from your close relatives and family members. There are many reasons why i am saying that. Accept our biological parents we can get anything and have access to everything under the sky when in US. All the Americans be it any ethnicity where once immigrants 3 to 4 generations back so Americans are very welcoming as a country and accept diversity. The only condition is the new immigrants should have a mindset of adapting new cultures and should be able to socialize or atleast acknowledge and anticipate a response. Americans love to interact and will respect anyone and everyone who are ready to blend with the culture. I have seen some Indians not responding to greetings or they just look like they saw a gost and not answer at all. America has the most immigrants than anywhere else in the world so differences are obvious. Being an Indian origin and American citizen I flaunt my Indian heritage and culture very proudly and Americans love to know more about it. Those who don’t know don’t hesitate to share our culture and traditions to the world. Trust me we are much ahead of the game.

Agree US has lot to offer, if u get greencard which will be a wait of 30-40 years for those who applied in 2016 anyone coming now has to have kids born here and when they become 21 year old they will sponsor their parents this is a hard reality which is ignored in the noise.😊 Good Luck

@Nik GAL - I am an American Citizen with Indian Origin this is my personal opinion and experience. So this is something what no one talks about but every one says that Indians are the most successful immigrants in America. The people coming on H1B visa’s always worry about getting a green card but my question is what difference does it make? All the high paying IT jobs are either given to the H1B employees or being outsourced. I had a decent IT job when I was in India. But it’s hard to believe that it’s impossible to get the same position or job in America being an American citizen. Its all outsourced or for H1B. And they do get paid really well. Where as American citizens has to either study harder in the highly expensive Universities at a mid age or start a business which may work or may not. So why is it seen as a challenge for H1B visas when they are already in the US living their dream and hoping to get a green card and eventually a citizenship. H1B holders do get privilege what a citizen don’t get. Why they want a citizenship in a foreign land away from their loved ones and missing out all the fun in their own country. Nothing comes without a cost.
@Calzonerip
@Calzonerip Жыл бұрын
@@shobanasebastian7186 Agree H1b does give them job and money they wanted and also they save alot. But every few year boom bust cycle bring insecurity in the back of mind about loosing job heading back unplanned and also obvious travel issue with visa stamping and all with green card processing time in decades people fear for their aging out children their retirement. I guess those who are not close to greencard and considering fresh to settle in another country may think twice. It depends in individual choice also i think if someone want make some extra money for few years and go back. Just consider carefully when thinking long term because when the time comes and you have limited choices may lead to regrets nothing to discourage anyone.

I dont deny a single thing you have mentioned but then a guy can go to USA only if he has money. Money, where you come from, your life, your surroundings, what you see around you, who you meet has so much impact on your life. Its not you and i can change things here, government has a different base and rules in India, that has to change. In India, no ruch guy would think of all this. Regardless of his education, school, he can do good in life, live a good life. A upper middle call can easily go to USA if he a bit good in his studies. Rest all got to suffer.
