Great video, as always :) Like Dmitriy, I'd also like to see more on this topic - making and working with mattes! Just a simple workflow showing how to make a node tree branching off to make a contrast-based matte then merging it back in and doing something with it would be super helpful.

Would it be correct to say that a matte is like having a blue sheet of paper with a circle cut out of the middle and then putting that blue sheet of paper on top of an orange sheet of paper so that the end result is a blue image with an orange circle in the middle? so, therefore, the matte is the blue sheet with the circle cut out of the middle?

Is there some subtle difference between a "matte" and a "mask" that I am not seeing? Or is it nothing but different terms in different industries, that both mean the same thing?
@CinePenguin89
@CinePenguin89 Жыл бұрын
From what I gather, a mask is a way to create a matte, while a matte is a more broad term referring to one element of a video isolated so that you can work with it individually.
@GrantSR
@GrantSR Жыл бұрын
@@CinePenguin89 So, the "mask" is the grey scale "layer" that one uses to create a "virtual matte," which allows one to modify a specified portion of the image AS IF that portion were a truly separate "layer" (or component) of the film. In layer-based photo editing programs, we don't think of the "matte" as a separate thing. We use one mask to edit one area of a photo in one way. Then we use another mask to apply edits to another area of the photo. Those two areas may or may not overlap. So, we don't think of the specified address as separate "things" that need a term to name them. And I assume the term "matte" comes from theater, where mattes are painted screens used to simulate part of a scene. (A "technology" that was also used in many early films, and came back into use with modern shows such as Mandalorian.)

A matte is the little brother of a depth map
@GrantSR
@GrantSR Жыл бұрын
@@HamedEmine Considering that depth mapping is relatively new, I don't think the analogy holds. Depth mapping is a newer, higher-tech way to generate a virtual matte.

in a general sense mattes are pulled from footage and a mask is created by hand drawing curves. but they are used interchangeably. just one of those things

Question. Have you ever looked at motion tween for premiere? Is there some way to make a fusion transition that takes the x, y and scale values of the first clip. And then moved the first clip across a curve to the second clips x, y and scale?

Can you make a short tutorial on how to track and animate a matte once you created it?
@kyleheilig255
@kyleheilig255 Жыл бұрын
You don't have to track or animate a matte. It's just an output of your footage. The only thing you'd need to animate would be your mask shapes (if you did it that way). You'll animate those before you put out the matte. The best way is to use a lumakey.

Thanks for the clear description But…. This is a video file isn’t it? does the matte automatically track and adjust through all the moving frames 🧐 how does that work ?

It does if it's rendered from a 3d render, yes. It updates each frame

@@CaseyFaris so if i'm an editor who doesn't work with video game 3D stuff, and I want to mask out the sky for example, how does that work with mattes? (i'm used to the magic mask by now which is amazing.. is this similar?). TIA!

VERY interested in how to work with renders, or a simple unreal workflow. Unreal has so many assets built in that make it so easy to throw together a simple scene, but I've gotten lost bringing that into Fusion and being able to work with it. Tbh I've gotten stuck working with any 3D object with all the different files that need to be put into separate nodes to make the 3d object's node work. I feel like I'm overcomplicating it but would be helpful to see a video like this on how to just bring in stuff from, say, unreal and have it at a point that is workable
