I have been using a Poly Leader for a while now and have had a lot of questions about what they are and why you might want to use one, so here I try and break it down a bit and tell you why I like them, what they are good for and what are NOT good for...
Hope it helps.

Hi Alex, did mention that I have used the poly leader, but it was another brand. Been using braid for years and happy. But have just purchased the Roman Moser ones. I think its the ultra float one which impresses me most. But yet to try. I fish down to 2' tippet with mine. But I am not fishing for spooky fish. I fish on stillwaters in UK. Great tip. Take care. I used one this year for dry-dropper fishing and I tied in a loop with the exposed tippet on the end. Then I just used loop to loop connection for every new piece of leader and still going strong, so you don't need to go tippet ring if you don't want to. Find them very good for small tight water as it roll casts well and you can basically fish a 3 foot leader with it without spooking them. It does sink a bit though but hey it's a cool tool

Nice explanation of floating polyleaders. Have been using one this season for wet fly fishing. Wondering if anyone thinks the leader improves single hand Spey casting over a conventional mono leader?

I've been using them for over a year now. Fine them really good for punching through strong winds. Which are regular during the summer months in the top of the South Island.

funny story. I was using a large clouser for salt water, halibut fishing of the beach in Long Beach, CA. I cast right handed, the wind came up blowing from the right side. On a long cast and the forward push, the wind blew that clouser with its near 1/4 ounce weighted barbell eyes, right into the back of my head! I thought someone shot me with a wrist rocket! Busted my head open, blood running down my neck, but I fished on. The fish were biting and believe it or not, right there is the 4' surf, the halibut were jumping all around me. They must have been spawning or feeding but jumping! Anyway, realized it was my own fly that hurt me, looked around, no one saw. Fish on, act like nothing happened :-)

I’ve been watching your videos intently trying to build my trout knowledge. When it came to this video I was wondering if it was for castablity or spooking. I was surprised that you mentioned sometimes it spooked fish. I use all the polys when I fish for Atlantic salmon but I use the float hover or intermediate when I’m fishing lower water and trying to it spook salmon. Helps with another extra 10-15ft of clear poly instead of the bright fly line. Polys are great! I also use the tippet rings on the end. Cheers
@TrippinOnTrout
@TrippinOnTrout 5 ай бұрын
The times I have spooked fish with it are those big wide, shallow, open glides and it just made a bit too much noise when it hit the water and they were off. To be fair, there’s every chance it was just my shit casting though 😆🤷‍♂️

Enjoy seeing the gear. I can honestly say that I haven’t used a 15+ foot leader here at home. But definitely had to in New Zealand. Crystal clear water with fish that are watching you. You need the advantage. I’d give the poly leader a go for stuff like that. How long does the poly leader last? What kind of memory does it have to retain its form. Just wondering.
@TrippinOnTrout
@TrippinOnTrout 3 жыл бұрын
They last for ages! I haven’t had to replace one yet. As for memory, it has none - like a real supple fly line

Would this work on something like a 4-3 weight and down? (i.e. or is it more suited for a 5 up). When I used to work at Orvis they had these braided leaders with bimini twist tippets which were great

I catch so many trout I have to use size # 12 or #14 brass swivels on my leaders to save my fly line from twisting up. I'll use up to 5 swivels and not scarce trout away but seem to attract the biggest trout to my fly. Up to 10lbs.so far. A win win situation for me.
@hereonbusiness

I’ve recently adopted the same poly leader, because the poly leader floats better than a standard mono tapered leader, which reduces drag between the fly line and my indicator/tippet transition. For streams and small/medium rivers I find I’m mending all the way to my indicator/dry fly indi just to reduce drag from multiple currents. The standard tapered leaders tend to sink or get dragged under, making it almost impossible to effectively mend them. With the limited experience I’ve had using a floating poly leader, I think they hugely reduce the amount of drag. Any thoughts?
@TrippinOnTrout
@TrippinOnTrout 3 жыл бұрын
It’s certainly easier to mend as it’s heavier and therefore you can move around a bit better. I think it’s what you get used to really. If it’s working for you then stick with it!
