The word Pyrometer is derived from the Greek word - “Pyro” meaning fire, and “Meter” meaning “to measure”. Back in the day, the original pyrometers were non-contacting optical devices which intercepted and evaluated the visible radiation emitted by glowing objects. However, the best example of a pyrometer today, would be an infrared thermometer. In this video we explore how infrared technology is used to measure surface temperatures.

I appreciate these videos - please don't dumb them down. For instance: at 0:48 you mention "..detect the infrared radiation frequency". Later in the rest of the explanation, nowhere is this frequency to be found. A simple thermopile would measure the magnitude and not the wavelength, not the black-body spectrum. It's not magic, it's science, and yes, your viewers *are* smart enough to appreciate the difference ;)

"Emit infrared radiation, the higher the surface temp is, the higher the frequency of that radiation" But in your video, the mechanism is to measure the thermo pile behind the lens, and it is not about frequency, it's about the energy flux it absorb. I believe it can be explain in black body radiation more clearly.

Does the distance between ir device and object also effects the measurements ?

the further the device is from the object, the larger the “spot” you’re measuring and the less precise the reading will be (as you’re measuring across larger area)

Infrared will work best as long as the material is not too reflective, which will cause emissivity issues
