I have learned that gender identity is an internal experience and can mean different things to different people, why then is there such a thing as identifying as something, if the definition is so broad that it ultimately means nothing? Whats the point of saying I identify as a woman, if that term explains nothing to the person you're talking to? Genuine question.

Agender here and I just want to say no disrespect but technically this video didn't actually answer the question. I understand a lot of transphobes use the question, "What is a woman?" in bad faith in order to mock the queer community or whatever, so in no way do I want to associate with them. But nevertheless, as someone with no gender preference, what does it mean when someone says they are a woman? Or man, or non-binary, or bi-gendered? What is it that a person is identifying as? As a fellow agender, who happens to have born a woman, it's simple: Woman = Adult human female. This video lacks the most important information: Gender Identity was a theory created by Dr. John Money (infamous for the horrible Reimer case) who believed in "gender" (masculine/feminine) as nurture over nature. Well, he was terribly wrong. So a trans woman is basically an adult human who wasn't developed in utero as a female (we develop our primary sex characteristics in utero), but self-identifies her "gender identity" as feminine.

Yes, I have the same questions. There is an inconsistence here. If you identify as a woman, then it must mean something specific, but the video states that it can mean anything to anyone, if that's the case then it is meaningless.

You can't really define gender, but each person uses words that suit them based on how and where they grew up, so a woman can literally mean anything, depending on how the person uses it and how they feel it suits them. And really no one can tell you what their gender is, the same as we can't define love, it's more like how you feel. It's rather simple, actually. To experience gender identity, try looking in a mirror and asking yourself, "Am I a boy/girl?" After that, ask yourself whether you would still be a boy/girl if nobody had ever told you that you were. If you give another reason, such as, "I am a boy/girl because I have certain biological traits," ask yourself if you would still be a boy/girl if you lost those traits in an injury. Eventually, you'll probably come to the conclusion that you just are a boy/girl, because there's something so fundamental about it that we know who we are without any reason at all.

I only know my sex because my biological traits, if I lost that in an injury I’d still know I’m the same sex because I already know before the injury and therefore it’s in my dna. If i was born without genital, id look at my bone structure, or I’d have to get a dna test to be sure. The concept of knowing because ‘there’s something so fundamental about it’ doesn’t make sense to me at all. I know my sex because of my body, without the body how would anyone know their sex? I guess you could look at behaviour and contrast that with stereotypical gender roles, but that would be subjective at best, and actually quite sexist, as it conforms to gender stereotypes saying gender and behaviour determine each other.

cis people do have this feeling. a lot of cis men, for example, will have an aversion to trying on a dress or wearing makeup there is literally nothing in their DNA about what clothes they should wear, or if they can put on makeup. but they can still feel the societal pressures for their assigned gender. just like some people can feel opposite pressures from the one they were assigned

Just because most make up wearers are women doesn’t mean wanting to, or not wanting to wear make up makes you any more or less a women, or less of a man for wearing it. It seems like you are saying that make up and dresses are objectively feminine (granted dresses designed for females bodies are, but dress wear for males is masculine in certain cultures). IOW, gender is subjectively defined, on your worldview. But that would make misgendering impossible. If there is no objective definition for "gender", "man", "woman", etc. then no one can ever be correct/incorrect while using these terms. Let me get this straight… Customarily, we’ve used man and woman to define two sets of people: the penis and vagina people, respectively. Uncommonly, there are naturally occurring deformities that make it difficult to identify one or the other, so we’ve used intersex or hermaphrodite or etc. Nowadays, because we are becoming more tolerant of everyone’s feelings, everyone gets a chance to say who they feel they are and have that identity validated. “I feel like a man,” or “I was assigned male at birth, but that doesn’t align with my gender identity.” So now… Whatever you say in relation to gender expression… is fair game? “Weekdays, I feel 100% male until the weekend when my hybrid female/non-binary self takes the reins.” But can someone explain the POINT of all this gender expression fascination aside from trendy narcissism? Because I’ve listened over and over to the explanations from the other side and I can probably safely say that all this boils down to pure self-obsession. Calling yourself the opposite sex or agender or whatever is just a rebellion against the shackles of “conformity.” You don’t like the label given to you, so you seek out a new one or create your own. Okay. But the very harsh reality is that your new identity will never be accepted as truth by everyone because you cannot force compliance, as I’m sure you’re well aware. You want to be unique and special, but guess what? Generally, people like structure. They like having two simple names for the sexes. No one wants to be burdened with learning your gender identity because no one really cares about your made up gender. They know penis makes the sperm and baby comes out the vagina and they are fine with that. You’ll pound your fists against the wall that is sexual dimorphism until they’re riddled with blood and you’ll have nothing to show for it. Sure, you’ll gain some converts to your religion but it has no legs to stand on. It’s a mental health crisis, and no one wants to admit it.

Every blue moon someone would say they feel like a boy trapped in a girl's body. 20-30 years later we have several different gender identities and we're having a really hard time with all of this because as the so-called crazy person in the last comment said, we've grown up with two genders, two sexes. I have seen the last couple Generations become more self-absorbed, self-centered, and obsessed with oneself and for some reason it has morphed in many different ways including but not limited to gender identities. My daughter is transitioning into my son and this has been extremely hard on me. I just wanted to let you know that just because somebody else has a different thought, idea or a different way of seeing some issue doesn't mean that they are crazy. But I understand why you would think that because it's very difficult these days for everybody.

My friend at work uses they/them and often times I find it hard when others refer to them as he/him or she/her. I don’t like confrontation so I basically just continue using they/them in front of the people who use the incorrect pronoun to try to get them to clue in to the correct way. Is there a way to be stronger without being too aggressive? I was thinking about just really landing on the they/them whenever the word comes into my mouth.

If you're comfortable, you can politely say something like "Hey, I think my friend uses they/them pronouns," or "Hey, my friend likes to be called they/them" and still not come off as too aggressive. It's usually best to do it in the moment, right after someone has used the wrong pronouns, but you can always find the person afterwards and talk to them one-on-one about it. Landing on they/them really hard in your own speaking can come across as passive aggressive and be a little off putting. I think it's better to directly address the issue when it happens.

The thing is, none of these things are measurable. Whatever might be considered point x on the "gender spectrum" for one person, might feel more like point y. Both two people feel the same way about how masculine/feminine/male/female/man/woman they are, but because all of these ideas are very subjective and introspective, they don't actually mean anything. Sex, on the other hand, is measurable, very much so. I'm not a woman because I somehow feel especially in tune with the idea of "womanhood" (whatever that might mean to any of us, again, not measurable), I'm a woman because my sex is female. For most ppl that you classify as "cis", this is the crux of it. Not some especially strong alignment or affinity with the idea of womanhoo/being a woman/female/etc.

Here's a question though. Why are the lines for sex drawn where they are? What is the scientific reason for the phallus of a new-born girl to be under 3/8"? Why not draw the line at 4/8", or 2/8"? Why is the hormone level for women out where it is? Your sex is female cause of a bunch of socially decided arbitrary standards. It's not set in stone. Non-binary Is someone that has a gender outside of the "male-female" binary concept of gender. They can either identify partially with one of those 2 or identify as something else entirely. Agender means having no gender at all or a neutral gender. It's considered a Non-binary gender identity, but It's kind of Its own thing. Gendervoid Is sometimes compared to Agender (and Is even used interchangeably with agender) but It doesn't mean the exact same thing. A Gendervoid person feels like there's a void where their gender should be or that their gender resembles a void In some way. I hope this helped you in some way! Depends on the context. If the person wants to hide their pronouns without being misgendered (perhaps they are in the closet because of their parents), using their name to replace their pronouns is acceptable. In the case the person uses no pronouns (which is very rare), nouns are the only acceptable way of referring to that person, so the person's name is fair game. If the person has pronouns and doesn't want to hide them, it would, in most cases, not be acceptable to do it (without consent). P.S. - If you need a refresher, here are some examples of pronouns: he/him - she/her - they/them - xe/xem - I/me - who/whom

Sometimes I feel like I have to learn *ALL* of the genders, but then I realized that a lot of people just refer to themselves as a more common gender and only explain the details to family and friends. But what if I reject such, and reject that others should form an identity around such toxic ideas? Why should I support regressive thinking? I also think it's incorrect to assume the gender identity of the vast majority of people to proclaim them as cisgender. Don't conflate gender identity with expression or preference of pronouns as it's unclear if they are attempting to convey their gender identity or their sex. Many trans people have ‘Gender dysphoria’. A sense of disconnect between there body and there brain. Some people say it’s like phantom limb syndrome. Your brain expects certain sensations from the body even when parts of the body don’t currently exist. Living with those feelings for a long time sucks.

The thing I don't get about this is people want to be identified by something that is essentially private. Your gender is pretty much defining your sexual preferences whether you enjoy sex with women or men or maybe both. It's a bit self centered to want people to accept you based on that. Yes they can. Most treatments are very similar across the gender spectrum, and any specific questions can be addressed via an awareness of assigned gender and medical transition progress. Also, yes they're human! Being male or female is not required to be human. Why? Because there are non-binary humans! Even the word "human" is gender-neutral, and that's because there are uncountable ways to be human, each and every one of them valid.
