A had an Esquire for several years as my only guitar. I learned a LOT about getting the most out of a guitar by volume and tone position where and how hard I struck the strings. Playing with or without a pick. It taught me how to play the entire guitar and is still my favorite guitar to carry to any gig. Spectacular playing man.

@@StuartRyanMusic In addition to that, the SG Jr is the one SG-type guitar that you might not actually snap the neck off, since they don't route out all the wood that supports the neck when they add the neck pickup. Pull the pickguards on a Junior and a regular SG and you'll see what I mean. Really excellent playing too, by the way. Enjoyed ever note of it.

I like it you can do some cool stuff with it, and I like to have specific tone settings that I can access consistently with the flick of a switch, kinda like how my Gretsch power jet has a three-way pick up selector and three-way tone selector(in place of any kind of tone knob) that has three distinct levels of tone ranging from maxed out to just about rolled off completely. It’s one of my favourite features of any guitar because I can change the tone well still having full control of my pick up selection. It’s a little different with the esquire having only one pickup but essentially I just treat the switch as a tone switch and I really only use the middle position when I need a specific volume and tone setting. other than that, I usually have it balls out in the lead position or doing low end tones with the rhythm position.

This guitar might be the ultimate lesson in "less is more" Lately I've been looking through the guitar mod community for pickup combinations + settings that provide the most versatility... without even getting the volume and tone controls involved. The kind of thing that your dad sees and says "this is too much" and you don't have a good comeback for. And then I stumble on this. Leo was a great inventor, you can see his thinking just by looking at it. The pickup is placed out of the way as to not obstruct the strumming and neatly hidden (intended to be covered by the bridge cover )and to substitute for the missing pickup the circuit mod. It’s pretty amazing to think this is one of the “early” versions of the electric guitar.

I own two Fender Esquires and two Fender Telecasters. All are fantastic ❤ 😎. Played through a blackface or tweed amp is fantastic. Single Coils through my Victoria 45410 with Alessandro 10” Alnico speakers are fantastic and I recently bought a Victoria Vibrolux 1x12 with a Celestion Alnico Blue it’s fantastic too cool

I never played in Esquire before so since I already had a Tele, i revamped a built secondhand DIY Tele kit with all new everything including the hand cut Lexan pickguard w/the bronze sparkle cardstock and i recently swapped the modern bridge for the vintage 3-saddle bridge and the experience of my Esquired Tele is just beautiful!

Great video! Loved the in-depth look at all of the different sounds available. I converted my Tele to an Esquire (sans pickup switch too) and haven't looked back. I plug mine straight into a cranked Carr Rambler and I can get a great range of tones from clean to dirty and dark to bright just using the volume and tone controls, as well as my playing. The instrument feels so much more reactive to small dynamic changes and picking nuances. You really pull the tones out of the guitar rather than switching to different sounds. It's like one really expressive spectrum of sounds rather than gradual steps or incremental changes.

I own an Esquire. I think it’s the most versatile guitar ever made and it really improves your playing, your dynamics and teaches you how to tame it just rolling the volume and tone off a bit. It’s a rude and in your face rock machine, but it becomes round, smooth and gentle if you know how.

Same, got the lake placid blue one. Love the way it played but I found like it lacked a bit of output and I also really wanted try the Eldred mod. Changed the pickup for a tonerider hot classic and got an eldred mod wiring harness. That guitar's a beast now hahaha

I watched this a year and a half ago. Since, I've custom wound a variation of the original pickup using 43awg etc... Jazz tones are possible in conjunction with the amp's settings.

There are 2 caps in the circuit, one for the tone pot and one to make P3. If P3 is too dark swap the 47uf for a 22uf and it should brighten it up.

That position 3 for me was quite odd. You get that kinda snappy sound instead of a mellow one it sounded almost like a horn or a synth to my ears. Im guessing that snap comes from the placement of the pickup in which the strings are taut so you get that tighter tension. I was thinking of turning my Squire telecaster in to an esquire but I'd have to think about it much more now. Great playing by the way! You covered a good handful of genres in one video!

Thanks for watching Matthew! I think that was actually the noise gate in the Kemper kicking in - it was probably set too high which gives that weird synth sound. The neck pickup was by far the least interesting thing on this guitar though

One thing that the esquire can do really well is some medium fuzz tones. If you listen in the opening track for Sgt. Pepper, the blazing lead tone is Paul McCartney playing his esquire

I think you can vary the tone in position 3 by using a capacitor (maybe instead it's a resistor? that would make more sense, anyway regardless one or the other) of a different value. If I recall, that is what determines how much high end is rolled off. you can wire in alligator clips and change values until you find one that works better for you. especially if you were building an esquire from scratch. I converted a Lotus Tele to an Esquire, and it sounds great with a Fender CS pickup in it, but it was so long ago that I forget what I did exactly and am too lazy to look for my notes. Maybe time to build another one! I have the first one still, but the body weighs a ton, so I usually only play it sitting down.

Yes, I agree. This is kinda the opposite of what a treble bleed does - in this position you want the top frequencies cut. But could be whatever you want - you could set up bass and a treble cut for a sort of mids strong tone. With the Esquire switch, you'd set it up for lead tone, rhythm, and another. That would pretty much cover any song and tone changes needed.

I think I looked up the original fender specs and it was too much for me, so I bought components near that value and changed them until I found something I liked. it's kinda like locking in your favorite setting on the tone knob. I think originally they thought it would be good for playing bass lines, and maybe it kinda is, but I am never called to do that, so it wasn't that useful to me as it was in the original specification. I can see wanting something authentic, but I prefer to have something I will actually use. I never thought of cutting the bass as well, good thought! thanks for that!

@@theoverunderthinker Completely agree - there are times when just 'original' doesn't work and this is one of them. You need to set this up for actual live playing when you just want to switch in a sound like an onboard pedal - simple and bombproof! ( Leaving it with a treble cut isn't an option IMO - I can see myself switching that in just when I'm supposed to be doing a solo piece and I'm lost in the mix instead.)

Are the original saddles really slanted as shown in 0:10? Or do they have some "play" so they can be turned a little?

@@ffbai Back in the day we use to split the difference on the two strings and then bend the adjuster screw / slant the saddle for more accurate intonation Nowadays you can buy them like that slanted.
