Had my eyes closed during the blind test, and the differences are really subtle. I don’t think anyone would notice on a record (maybe the player with the tone shaping), but they both sounded great. If not for the classic aspect and Fender on the headstock of the 58, would anyone seriously be embarrassed to play the squire? I really think too much is made of having to have a Fender or Gibson brand vs some of the lower priced gear. In the past the differences were huge, but today lower priced models I think hang with the big boys. And sometimes a small tweak like a pup swap or maybe a nut change can make the lower as good or better than the big boy.

I’m completely impressed at how close the Squier gets to the real deal. Congratulations to the winner, sounds like you’re getting an amazing fiddle! I actually built my own Esquire a couple of years ago out of a knotty pine Tone Bomb body and a Tele neck I had lying around. It was supposed to be whitewashed, but it’s aged to almost the same color that vintage Esquire is, minus the years of wear. I love that guitar. Only difference in electronics is my front position is a cocked-wah circuit instead of the traditional bassy neck sound. I don’t use it much, but it’s kinda cool to tinker with.

It is amazing how well the Squire stacks up considering the price. The Fender is awesome, but the Squire is also great. The time warp factor of having them next to each other is really cool, gives you a great idea what the 58 looked like new.

Hey Robert if you ever get the chance to do another review with a squire esquire can you tell us if doing a pick-up swap makes a massive difference? Some people say it comes down to mainly electronics but personally I think every little thing counts towards the tone in one way or another and how the age of the body will affect the resonance /acoustic-like qualities when played unplugged. I saw a similar video with a real 59 lp against a reissue with dimarzio anniversary PAFs pups though he never did a pickup swap within the guitars themselves so it just got me wondering.. new guitar+ vintage pickup= vintage tone? Happy rocking new year!!! Thanks 😊

Do amp settings make up for the first position switch setting on the squire vs the 58? While that mean the the pickup on the 58 was a little hotter or maybe the pots are set differently. Be interesting to see a measurement in each position. I thought that they both sounded amazing. Most tone comes from the player so not too surprising. Love you channel!!

The clean tones on positions 1 & 2 are almost exact analogues. It's only when you add some crunch that there's a wild-n-wooly element that the '58 has that the Squier lacks. I'd be willing to bet the difference is that the vintage pickup isn't wax-potted and the modern one is. If you were to go out and find a replacement with good Alnico 5 magnets and no potting and swap it out on the Squier, it'd be even closer when dirtied up.

That lick in the outro track of Ten Years Gone has such a good vibe. I could play that line for ages to a backing loop of that part of the song. I am usually all about Page stuff. But I am on a Yngwie binge right now. I am not very good at it even after many years, but I like that stuff and it bothers me not being able to do it well, so I keep trying decade after decade. I had to just buy a Mexi Strat though. Trying to play YJM on my Gibson was literally giving me injuries (muscle and tendon strains in my left arm. The LP is too cramped feeling and chubby in the neck perhaps, but I keep it because it has a really good tone. Strat arrives tomorrow and I am hoping it is easier to play faster stuff on).

Imagine going into a music store in 1950 and seeing that hanging on the wall. You'd laugh at it. A chunk of wood with guitar strings? It will never catch on.

I picked wrong I thought pickups mellowed with age but the 58 had more treble content. Although I thought they both sounded great I actually preferred the Squire on the rear setting but not on the front. I imagine there is a resistor that you could swap for a different value to change that.

Josh Muz Yeh thanks for letting me know dude but unfortunately I have to Adult too much there days wife paying bills and looking after my wife and kids so don’t really ever get free cash that I can go out and spend on guitars. Believe me I really wish I could but it’s not gunna happen anytime soon unless I get lucky with the lottery or a relative leaves me something in a will like money. Responsibilities suck sometimes lol 😂 😜
