I noticed a couple of half notes with a quarter rest above them. what does that mean?

+wraith507 It's a way to indicate that the bottom note is being held, while a top note plays over top of it. So the bottom note is a half note, holding for two beats, but the top note, also a half note, is played on the second beat. So there's a quarter rest on beat 1, and then that top half note is played on beat 2, while the bottom note continues to hold. This is difficult to describe with text, usually when I explain this I do lots of doodling, but hopefully that made some amount of sense!

It may help to point out that in the places the questioner refers to the left hand is carrying two separate voices, as reflected by the different directions of the note stems: pointing up for the upper voice and down for the lower one. In measure 25 the upper voice is silent for one beat (as indicated by the quarter rest) - likewise in measure 26 - while the lower voice sounds throughout each measure, beginning to end.
