Cerazette is a mini pill used to prevent pregnancy. In this video Dr Daniel Atkinson, Clinical Lead at Treated, explains a bit about how it works and who it can be suitable for.
A mini pill is a type of contraceptive pill that only uses one hormone to prevent pregnancy: a progestogen. And Cerazette is probably the most well known and popular brand of mini pill. So if you’re sensitive to oestrogen (found in the combined pill), this could be a suitable option for you. Those who have migraines, diabetes or have risk factors for blood clots can also be considered to use Cerazette. This form of contraception can also help with heavy periods - making them less heavy or frequent.
Most mini pills need to be taken at around the same time every day for them to be most effective, whereas Cerazette has a 12 hour missed-pill window. This can make it more convenient for you, without losing out on efficacy.
The team at Treated can help you get the contraception you need. Subscribe, pause or stop whenever it suits you. Choose better.

Hello! I have a few questions but for that I need to explain what is happening to me on the bc pill . In Jan/Feb 2022 I started on the combibed one and I was getting 2 periods a months so, after 7.5 months a switched to Ceracette. I expected it to mess around a bit with my period but it is Sept 23, (a year and a week since I switched) and I experienced the following since January (giving it 3 months of messing around with my body without worrying about it): January: started my period during the last week and lasted for 2 weeks. No periods til mid May: 2 weeks of bleeding, pain and lots of water retention, pimples. This was the same in June, July, August and NOW (started my period on the 4th and it is 19th). I change my REGULAR tampon every 3 hours and it is normally soaked. I see the clots. I am really bloated and have a lot of water retention. I need to pee at least 2 times in the middle of the night thus I cannot sleep well. I have vivid dreams, I am sore. I dream all the time about going to the loo and not being able to release the urine. I ended up ordering the menstrual cup because I was spending a lot on sanitary products. I also had headaches during this month. 1st question: why do I have to suffer like this after a year? 2nd question: why when it seems to be almost over, after 2 days I start a new period? (I know this is always happening because I am still in pain and a lot of water retention) 3rd question: what is going o in my uterus to have this much amount of tissue to release? 4th question: why do I still need to take ibuprofens? 5th question: why do I experience water retention when in theory it is caused when the levels of progesterone decrease? Background information: I have experienced very painful periods as a teen. Menarche: 9 years and 8 months old I used to faint, everything went black and I experienced cold sweats. I have always experienced water retention and pimples too. I started taking BC pills because I was having up to 3 weeks of PMS (including very sore breasts). I was always getting extremely bloated (even a woman asked me if I was pregnant). Thank in in advance, Tania Abeledo

Hi Tania. Thanks for your message and so sorry to hear that you've been having all this trouble with your periods and your pill. If you're having irregular, prolonged or severe periods, we recommend seeing a doctor in person as soon as you can. It's difficult for us to give you detailed advice here, and given you've been having problems for over a year, it sounds like you'd benefit from seeing a doctor face-to-face. Sorry, we realise that doesn't give you the answers that you were looking for. But if you go to a doctor, they may be able to suggest a specific treatment to relieve your periods, and in the longer term, recommend a birth control pill that's more suitable.

Hi Taliya, thank you for your message. Since you started taking Cerazette on February 22, 2023, it is possible that your menstrual cycle has been affected. If you have been taking the pill consistently and according to the instructions provided by your healthcare provider, then there may be nothing to worry about. However, if you are concerned about the missed period or experiencing any unusual symptoms, it would be best to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide more personalized advice and determine if any further testing or evaluation is needed. It is also recommended that you perform a pregnancy test.
