Read the policy before you buy one. I foolishly bought one one a flight where eventually I would not have been allowed to board it (COVID related), and Travel Guard refused to pay. Worse, they forced me to cancel the ticket first, meaning I could not even play the waiting game to see if Air Canada moved the flight times to the point where I could canceled. I've since read travel insurance policies, and only buy medical ones. The simple fact is, there is almost no way to collect unless I died, in which case I don't need the money and my heirs wouldn't know how to collect. Understand, the most you can lose is the price of your non-refundable items if your trip is canceled. That's why I won't insure anything other than medical expenses, which can be substantial. Even then, you might have to play games to get reimbursement. A Canadian hospital refused to provide an itemized list of charges for my dad's stay, which caused his insurance claim to be denied. He solved the problem by reporting the charges on his credit card as fraudulent. It was interesting how that hospital suddenly was able to provide the itemized list when faced with not being paid.

I have to give props to Allianz, who insured my trip to Denver a couple years ago. I hurt my shoulder and had to cancel my trip. Allianz refunded my plane ticket and a concert ticket I’d bought

I am over 65 and am no longer covered by credit card travel insurance. I buy mine through Costco for much less $$$ than the airlines charge. Also I travel many times during the year and find an annual multi- trip 30 day plan works the best for me. I have made many claims over the years & am very satisfied. I am healthy & don't smoke.

@@tessat338I tried to buy the Costco travel insurance but there's a field on one of the pages for the Costco booking number. Without a booking number(i.e., having booked some part of the trip through Costco Travel,) you can't continue. The policy limits for medical (200k) and evacuation ($1m) seem very good compared to, say, the Allianz policy I bought at the time I booked my flights with American ($25k medical and $25k evacuation.)

I don't buy travel insurance for US Domestic flights. I purchase Allianz Global when I book tours to Europe as it covers full cancellation, medical and other items that they have added after covid. I'm in the insurance industry and have read all the policy forms. Make sure you read the Full Cancellation coverage form if your going on a tour. The tour company I use offers travel insurance but I read their form and it said if you didn't purchase at the time you booked the tour than the full cancellation was NOT covered.

WOW perfect timing. I haven't flown internationally in 15 years and now I'm a 60+ traveler! I had purchased the travel insurance with my Delta ticket (Allianz). After watching this video, I fully realized the limitations it provided. It did NOT include medical evacuation back to the United States (my primary concern). Fortunately I had 15 days to cancel which I did. Now I can purchase an appropriate policy for my trip in April. Thank you! 😊

The only time I purchased it, I was on a flight from NYC to Chicago. Due to an ear infection, I kind of blew an eardrum. The insurance covered rescheduling my next flight, booked me in a nice hotel, and covered some basic medical care. I don't know if they covered the dry cleaning for the woman who was sitting next to me and was blood splatted when my ear popped or her treatment for psychological trauma. Edited to say: That last bit was a bit of a joke. It did not actually go of in a pyrotechnic way. It did feel like it.

I don't buy travel insurance from the airlines, but do get insurance through my travel agent. Even at my age (65) the medical portion is cheap. The remainder, however, skyrocketed in price post pandemic.

Older folks should shop around a LOT for travel medical insurance. My wife and I are retired and spend winters away (Portugal and Spain this year...) and we found so many loopholes in plans. The medical stability clause is one where insurers have a way to deny you coverage. Did you visit the doctor within six months of your travel date? A change in medications? These things can indicate that you were "medically unstable" and should not have traveled. Being retired teachers in Alberta, we found coverage through our retiree association that has no medical stability clause or loopholes for pre-existing conditions. This year, two weeks before we left, my wife injured herself with a muscle strain. She saw the doctor, got some medications and an exercise routine and the doctor cleared her to travel. The trip was great, no issues, but suppose that two weeks in, her injury got worse despite the doctor's prognosis and we had to return home. That medical stability clause in many policies would have denied us any coverage.

Sometimes. But real travel protection isn't about getting your ticket refunded -- it's about issues you might have while in a foreign country. Let me tell you -- if you ever find yourself in a foreign country with a serious illness such as appendicitis, you will be wishing you had travel protection. Recent coverage on a trip to Italy included $50,000 for emergency medical transportation and another $50,000 for emergency medical procedures. $250 for peace of mind in avoiding a $25,000 hospital bill? Well worth it.

Pre-pandemic, my travel insurance cost me £60/year. After? My renewal quote was ..... £300. I shopped around and found a policy for £100. I then took a gander at the BA website, which quoted ... £600! I wouldn't travel without insurance, even to Europe, where, post-Brexit, Brits do still have some access to EU states' health systems. Oh no! When you said flight insurance it took me back to the ‘70s when there were “flight insurance” kiosks in the terminal selling life insurance to pay your beneficiaries in case the plane crashed. Thank goodness those days are over. And yes, we buy travel insurance when traveling abroad using a search engine you recommended.

Once rented a beach house with friends and the contract required travel insurance. We were there less than 24 hours when we had to leave due to a family emergency. Friend that made the arrangements filed a claim and was able get our share of the rental reimbursed. We were surprised since everyone else was able to enjoy the holiday.

Another plus about buying separately will be that I'll be fully aware of the policy and able to actually use it if the time comes, whereas an add-on will probably do its best to stay hidden and hope you don't find it if something happens.

Personally I skip any type of flight insurance myself. However, I will ensure that I do have health insurance if I'm flying internatinally though, so that IS something that might be worth paying for (although I don't know if you will find that during the booking process, and usually requires you to take care of it on your own in most cases, but that's the only real insurance I would probably bother paying for -- but since I don't fly internationally that often, I usually do this on a per-trip basis instead of having a regular health insurance policy that has coverage full time for international travel). But I would recommend people check with their health insurance company and homeowner's/renter's insurance as well, as it may cover what the additional travel insurance would cover, except maybe things like cancellation fees or refunds for if you cancel the flight, but it may cover the more expensive parts like health insurance and insurance for lost/stolen items so you may already be paying for half of the stuff you would insure, with your normal insurance/benefits you already have. The cancellation/change policy is honestly one reason I've flown with Southwest most of the time (domestically) as they have a very relaxed policy that allows you to cancel or change flights with almost no penalty, except for that any cash paid at the time of purcahse will just be refunded to you as a credit, which is fine, and it seems those credits don't expire -- and neither do the points last I checked). I think others do have a similar cancellation/credit policy but some may have expiration dates and/or fees that are associated with them if the cancellation is NOT due to the airline. As for flying SW I will say that despite the issues they had in 2022 and some in 2023, on the whole, I think it's been a good experience overall, and I've saved at least $50 or $100 or more per flight in many cases where I had a checked bag, as this would be extra on many other airlines (although sometimes this fee is factored into the SW ticket price, but other times it's not and the fare is competitive with other airlines that have an additioanl fee for a checked bag, and it seems these fees are going up with many airlines, some reaching $60-$75 per bag, and that can mean $150 extra in some cases for a round trip on some airlines (particularly the budget airlines like Spirit or Frontier who lure you in with the cheap seat price, but you end up paying the same or more once you add in the fees).

Then our flight home was cancelled. I will now always recommend Allianz Travel Insurance. Very personable, Paid 100% medical costs, even more of the expenses due to our cancelled flight. If you're flying in Europe, airlines must compensate - and not only for cancelled flights, but also flight delays over a certain time period. Moreover, if you're European or a resident of Europe and have the pan-European health card, medical assistance will be provided to you in any member state without you having to cover the cost. As such, unless you are flying in Europe with either expensive items in your luggage or in order to undertake a high-risk sport or similar, travel insurance of any kind is all but unnecessary.

Question: What happens if you miss a connecting flight (same airline) because of a delay from the first leg of the flight? Will the airline place me on the next available flight without an extra fee? Greetings from Honolulu, Hawaii. I arrive in Honolulu 1 hour ago on Delta, Airbus A330-300 from Seattle on a full flight and the flight is good and okay, 5 and a half hour, but the In flight entertainment TV is responsive, but quite slow and crash for 5 to 10 minutes, before reboot the TV and it's back to normal.

If you are going to rely on the airline for the replacement cost of a lost or damaged bag, it’s best to check what their policy is and what the limit of that is. With some airlines, they have 21 days (or more) in which to locate your bag and do not have to reimburse you for any expenses while you were without the items. In some cases, they are limited to $250 as the total amount they will payout for a lost bag and contents. Last year on my trip to Cuba, the airline damaged my bag, it ripped open and all my stuff fell out (luckily for me I had everything packed in packing cubes and lost nothing). But, the airline I flew on policy is that ‘representative in destination will be able to assist in providing a replacement or suitable alternative.’ But mine was impossible to get a hold of. Because it was Cuba, I was VERY limited in the selection of suitcases to buy and it ended up costing me well over $550 to purchase a new one there. This amount was well over the amount the airline would pay, fortunately I had travel insurance that covered baggage and after 4 months of jumping through all their hoops, I was reimbursed for the cost!

As a Canadian , our government does not seem to enforce the rules that airlines must follow , like those in the USA or Europe. Many Canadians are forced into small claims court to get the basics of what they are entitled to. You refer to USA and European airline rules, but not Canadian. I belong to a Facebook group in Canada, moderated by Gabor Lucas, a airline passengers rights advocate in Canada, that details all these hardships Canadians face when trying to claim for things like lost baggage and cancellations, even when the airline is clearly in the fault. I would be interested to see a video that is specific to the issues facing Canadians, and not the policies of Delta, United and Southwest.

My wife and I travel quite a lot and always get travel insurance, but we try to opt out of coverage for our flight since we would get a credit from Delta Airlines anyways if we canceled and use the credit on our next trip. Our international, Delta One flight tickets run about $14k round trip for the both of us and we don't have any concerns with just relying on a Delta airlines credit rather than buying insurance coverage. Our travel agent is a great source of information to determine which insurance company to use for our trips. We are retired and travel insurance gets more costly as you get older so having an expert help sort through all the insurance options helps us a great deal. We also get "inside" discounts not available to travelers who book their own trips. This adds up to thousands of dollars per year for us. Not sure why you wouldn't use a travel agent. Maybe a good topic for another video?

I purchase travel insurance for a trip to Tokyo. A few months after the purchase, Japan had the tidal wave and nuclear accident. You would think it would be covered but they denied the claim because the natural disaster was too far away, never mind that the Japanese government urged people to reconsider travel. Luckily, I was able to work out refunds with JAL and the hotels. I have a question: I am going on a cruise to the arctic and there almost no rescue points. I think that the ship is the only medical facility for hundreds of miles. Is there any point in insurance?

My wife and I had a trransatlantic cruise from Puerto Rico to Barcelona planned just before the Pandemic. We had flights to Puerto Rico and flights back to the US from Barcelona booked. We had travel insurance from Allianz Global for the entire trip which included all the flights. The pandemic hit and the whole cruise was cancelled by the cruise company. Allianz refused to pay anything for the flights and used the pandemic as the excuse. Luckily the airline refunded all our money. Allianz did nothing for us and wouldn't give us any money back for the policy.

I do purchase ALLIANZ for intl flights. Never had to use it, but during a Morocco trip in February’24, our best friends’ wife died, in the middle of the desert. Well a few years ago I accidentally in purchased the trip plate insurance through the airline well come to find out I really did need it and I went to use it to recoup the cost of the airlines tickets. Just to find out that I still was going to wind up paying for the flights that was a big waste I wound up spending $3,000 for tickets. Because the tickets that I was initially purchased for $1,500, and then I had to turn around and buy another 1500 dollars worth of tickets because the airline took it to the wrong place that we needed to be. I tried to recoup my money through the insurance to no avail

I have never purchased flight insurance ever. I have also never purchased a warranty for electronics. I have never needed to be reimbursed for these either. However if I ever needed to be reimbursed I have saved so many thousands of $ by not paying for the insurance or warranty that i would still be ahead if I had to pay out of pocket. I’ve never purchased travel insurance. I would consider it if I found one that offered a decent bereavement policy. A year and a half ago, I had to cut short a trip to Thailand because my brother unexpectedly died. The airline, Singapore Airlines, wanted $1,650 to change the return date. I had a basic economy ticket that cost me $673 total. I found another airline that charged $620 for a return ticket. I still have 4 siblings older than I am, so a bereavement policy that would change the return portion or buy a one way ticket would attract my interest, if the price was right. Personally, I won’t buy travel or health insurance when I travel to Thailand.

I booked a round trip flight to Japan in mid-June 2019 for a March 2020 flight on Eva airlines. I paid $119 for full flight insurance, including illness etc., the works through a third party. Yeah, you probably guessed we landed in Taiwan, and they suddenly canceled the balance of the flight to Tokyo and the return flight. I was stranded in Tokyo for 3 mo. Oh, the insurance company went bankrupt. Worthless.

Fwiw, in the US, if one has traditional part B Medicare with a Medicare gap coverage plan, that gap coverage plan may include medical coverage outside the US. I gap coverage Plan G* via United Health Care (via AARP) which covers 80% of the cost incurred in the first 60 days of a trip outside the US but with a lifetime limit of $50k USD. Not that huge but not nothing. The lifetime limit part makes it (in my view,) more of a backstop to other travel insurance and not something you'd want to lead with but ymmv. *PlanG. Medicare pays 80% of most charges. Gap insurance is to cover the 20%. The govt has defined the parameters of gap plans (various deductible, co-pays, etc.,) and insurance companies offer plans that meet those parameters. So for the "G" plan, multiple Ins Co's may offer a plan in your area at different price points. This is different from Medicare Advantage plans (I won't go into that here and can't speak to any included travel medical insurance.)

People, read the policy. Many policies have forum selection clauses, this means you fight any claim you have in the state they have chosen. Maybe in Texas or Louisiana. Also, "choice of law" provisions are included in most policies. This means that the law of Bermuda may apply to your claim. In total, if they don't want to pay, you are highly unlikely to get anything. Oh, and watch for Mandatory Arbitration clauses. These prevent you from filing a claim in your state court and require you to attend arbitration. I have read numerous travel policies, almost all of them a gamble.

Traveling to areas of the world where environmental impacts or local territorial conflicts may occur and/a traveler is participating in adventurous activities or unexpected unknown plane passengers disruptions or medical mishaps occur are legitimate reasons to consider purchasing travel insurance. Traveling abroad with a separate travel insurance policy above the minimum offered on a credit card or by the airline is in my opinion a case by case determination especially if one has pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer treatments/diagnosis, disability etc... Not having is like "driving unbuckled". After all the insidious side of any insurance policy is that if you don't use it you lose it. But, if you need to use it, it's in place. "A pound of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

My Medicare supplemental insurance provides comprehensive international medical coverage for vacations. It doesn’t cover medical evacuation, but I don’t travel to any country that doesn’t have a good medical system. For everything else I find that travel insurance is too expensive to be worth it. I’ll just risk the cost of cancellations.

I don't travel very often but would not take the flight insurance. However, I would never travel without insurance especially as medical bills and repatriation can be so expensive. I currently get worldwide travel insurance included with my bank account, although medical conditions have to be declared and sometimes need an extra premium.

My last trip I didn't buy insurance, and the flight we were on had a electrical issue and the flight company offered a free 20$ meal for a 14 hour flight delay and offered a hotel stay In the change over in south Korea because there was no connecting flights for 10 hours ... it was quite annoying when I was on a time schedule and lost almost an entire day due to there electrical issues then they got it fixed withing 3 hours but they sent the pilot home so we didn't have a pilot -_- american airlines 😅😢

Don't buy cheap…I flew with Frontier they moved my departure to the next day when I supposeto to leave! I also bought a window seat..this ended up costing the same. This had never happened with reputable airlines

I don't purchase insurance with the airlines but do carry medical and evacuation coverage though a private company. Most of my travels is to Asian country. My wife is Filipina and we travel to European countries not France and we have deep discussions as on that as hate France and its arrogant people that hate Americans. Have never had any issues heath wise. Also use Asian airlines, no US airlines, so many drunken disruptions on the US airlines. They ban alcohol at airports and on the airlines. If you drink stay at your local bar.
