True story: We got our Model 3 smashed by a truck driver and had a VW ID.3 as a rental car for two months. That is a long time, so we really have a chance to get used to the VW. I had expected it to be almost as good as the Tesla. Of course, the specs of the Tesla are better, and the charging network is fantastic. But I expected the VW ID.3 to be a fun car to drive. But it is not. The ID.3 is not a bad car, but it is a bit boring. It is simply inferior and feels old, compared to the Tesla. The VW takes you from A to B and it is electric. But it lacks the joyful acceleration and the fine software or our Tesla Model 3. You never heard me laugh in the VW, but the Tesla is a joy to drive, and I keep pushing the acceleration pedal down to the metal quite often. I never get tired of it and me and my wife are fighting over who should drive when we use it. Lars, you say that the VW ID.3 does not have the tech that a Tesla has. That is correct, and it might be a reason why it is not selling as good as it deserves. The navigation system is…well, I used my iPhone instead. And the menu system is confusing at first, then you realize that there is not much you can do. We have only the standard range version of the Tesla Model 3, but it still wipes the floor with the VW ID.3. VW's CEO Herbert Diess seems to make a fine job transforming Volkswagen to the EV era, but his technicians are not there yet.

I've not had many cars, and not really tried that many, but of the ones I've tried I've only really felt at home in two: My long-gone Citroën XM Break (turbodiesel), which was very comfortable, spacious and predictable, even on slippery winter roads without ESP/anti-spin or even ABS; and now our Model S 90D. They're not comparable at all, save for a few factors: They're both spacious, comfortable and behave predictably in difficult conditions. The Mondeo we had in between I never learnt to trust, even after driving it for nine years - it was a decent car in other respects, but that was all. We've also had a LEAF (1st gen, early version) which was well built and all, but I was not sad to see that one go either. Same could be said for its replacement, an Opel Ampera-e: It's a massive improvement on the LEAF in all respects, and while it lacks OTA updates that doesn't matter much since it supports Android Auto, so decent nav is available when needed as well as music streaming etc. - it does a great job as our #2 car, and even accelerates decently (FWD only being the real limit) but I will not mourn its departure when that day comes. The Model S, which we bought used, I felt at home in pretty much right away. I love the minimalistic interior, the GUI is well thought out and easy to navigate, and even though it's the "pedestrian" version (non-performance) it has got more than enough power and very good anti-spin/stability control (to the point that even flooring it on icy/"slushy" winter roads it stays controllable). Nice touches like the air suspension offering to remember places where you raise it makes it feel well thought-out and "smart". I got the chance to try the i-Pace for two and a half weeks after an encounter in a roundabout scratched the entire right side of the S, and that was interesting... to drive it's not that dissimilar to the S (though less efficient), and while slightly shorter and narrower it's also taller, so I expected somewhat comparable space to the S... ah well: The boot was quite a bit smaller, and when I first saw the "frunk" I actually LOLed. Then it's the buttons and screens: It's like the designers went amok in the interface store, adding anything short of air gestures. There are buttons of course - quite a few of them; there are dials, of which the climate control ones are about the one component I wouldn't mind seeing again (nice, chunky metal dials with a screen, and push/pull to change dial function), and there are screens, where the GUIs incorporates so many different concepts it becomes a sorry mess. It's so incoherent it's almost impressive - a bit like how I felt when I borrowed my sister's 2nd gen LEAF: It took me several minutes while driving figuring out how to activate cruise control. I'm an IT guy and general electronics/tech nerd - I probably have an easier task figuring these things out than most, so if prospective buyers actually try out how these cars' interfaces work when shopping around I think this too is a plus for Tesla - if you're used to a smartphone it shouldn't take you long to become familiar with Tesla's GUI. Tesla is not a legacy automaker, and it shows - mostly in good ways.

I'm pretty sure they all have iPhones, from smart phone to smart phone there isn't much difference in hardware. " Performance Ev's are Boring". "Ev's are only ok for commuting". Are EV's to legacy manufacturers still a necessary evil to allow them to continue to make good profits on ICE?
@koma-k3 жыл бұрын
I think to legacy automakers, EVs are a dilemma. They've seen the writing on the wall, but also the pain involved in switching - GM, to my knowledge, took years before making a profit from the Bolt, and I suspect it's still less than what ICE cars make (and now thoroughly obliterated thanks to the LG production issues) . Then it's the sheer headache of the reorg, with entire departments becoming redundant and what to do with the affected employees - thanks to their size it's not only an HR issue but becomes political. Add to this the current trouble of sourcing enough batteries to get to decent scale required for profitability. The current semiconductor shortage is just the decorative cherry on the top. So there are probably a wide variety of thoughts in the legacy leadership, from the head-in-the-sand thinking that it can all be postponed till after I retire, to Diess' "let's do this!"-attitude (I've never been a VW/VAG fan, but it looks like Diess may have started them down the right track).
@robinholmes7853 жыл бұрын
@@koma-k, You have made some really great points! I would like to add a couple of other reason's why it may be impossible for traditional auto to change over to all EV production: Tesla has shown that it is not just possible, but desirable, to sell vehicles globally without a dealer network. All companies with dealers will never be cost-competitive. They CAN'T get rid of the dealer networks, legally, financially, and structurally. They are in a no-win situation! Nearly ALL their intellectual property about how to build, sell, and maintain, a vehicle is out of date and has to be scrapped! Tesla's Mega-Factory concept has reinvented how vehicle manufacturing is done. ALL traditional vehicle manufacturing plants need to be completely redesigned (that includes Fremont eventually)! What do you think?
@koma-k3 жыл бұрын
@@robinholmes785 I think I agree with respect to dealer networks: It adds another link in the chain from raw materials to customer, and with each link needing a portion of the profits to exist it only adds to the headache of making EV production profitable. One could argue that Tesla still needs service centres, and those usually have a showroom attached, but there's no separate organization requiring a profit, nor do they tend to keep a stock of cars for customers to walk in and buy, so both operating costs and capital tie-up is lower. Legacy auto production has been a fairly stable industry for decades, and one central tenet (in almost all production) is to specialize in a few key areas and outsource the rest - thus legacy automakers have largely become good at forming metal sheets and building engines, and buying everything else from suppliers. Sure, this adds links in the chain, including transport/logistics, but the thinking seems to be that this is offset by the difficulty of controlling many disparate departments in one organization - that the top management couldn't possibly understand so many aspects of the business efficiently. Another side effect of course is that product development cycles get longer, as developing a new model involves lots of external parties, with each design change needing contract updates etc., making rapid iteration very hard, especially after entering production. With Tesla vertically integrating pretty much everything it removes a lot of bureaucracy and speed bumps, though I suspect part of their agility comes from rethinking the whole development cycle and project organization, possibly taking ideas from the software industry. It would be interesting to see a comparative study on the organization of Tesla compared to legacy auto - it's not my field of expertise by any means, but it would be one I'd read.

Best performing, best experience…and if we can’t make that happen, people will not choose electric and we have failed as a company.” And when you have an ethos that shoots for the moon like that, you tend to be on a level that makes it embarrassing for legacy automakers to even be called “competitors.”

There are two things that Tesla has that the competition does not have. One is the passionate community around Elon and one that maintains an excitement about everything a Tesla has. And secondly associated with that is that you buy a Tesla and from that moment a story of improvements and constant improvements begins with updates, while the others do not start a story, the story of the others ends with the sale.

I think that one major reason that Tesla is outselling the others might be due to perceived dependability. Normally I, and I assume others, feel that a new car might have faults that will come back to cause the owner problems. Now you have Tesla that has been around for a few years and would have these issues resolved by this time. So basically you can choose a known reliable car in a Tesla or take a gamble on an unknown vehicle.

With all the rest your in a dealership, with a capital B.S. artist breathing down your neck trying to make a sale NOW, then when you look 'ready' (actually more like a chicken in a microwave oven) they move you into the accessories department, then finance... it's all down hill. I can relate my experience as a prospective buyer. I currently live abroad and won't be back to Europe before next spring. I intend to buy an electric car when I return home and, being an engineer, I made quite a comprehensive research to decide what would be best for me. Currently Tesla model 3 LR is topping the list, one of the main reason is detailed hereafter. I used ABRP to simulate several long range travels I do on a regular basis. Here are the results for one of them (from a main city in SW France to an Alps ski resort, winter time conditions, about 700 km) for several available cars. I put 2 entries for Tesla (with and without using the SUC, the second enables a perfect "apples to apples" comparison). The results show : number of charging stops / total duration of charging stops. Tesla model 3LR (w SUC) 4 stops / 58 min Tesla model 3LR (w/o SUC) 3 stops / 65 min Tesla model Y AWD (w SUC) 4 stops / 78 min Tesla model Y AWD (w/o SUC) 4 stops / 78 min VW Id3 ProS 4 stops / 87 min Hyundai Ioniq 5 5 stops / 111 min VW Id4 Pro77 4 stops / 122 min Audi etron Q4 6 stops / 152 min A pretty compelling argument IMHO. I am not "into cars", all I ask it that it does the job, reliably and safely. Based on the above, at the moment, Tesla cars just do it better than the rest.

To start with, the legacy brand cars all look duller than dull. They look typical for the endless compromises that are made because all these silo's and little kingdoms with these idiotic big ego bosses that the boards of direcctors do not dare to adress. Also, the legacy car makers simply put batteries in their boring ICE cars and juice it a bit up in design but do not do anything really fancy. They still do not understand that a BEV is not an ICE car and need NOT have the same look and same idiotic specs. There are NO explosions that need to be contained, no exhausts that are 250 degrees Celcius, stuff like that. It is like the silo masters and the boards are totally paralysed or have gotten dumbified by drugs or suddenly gotten zombies. I see nothing coming from the legacy car makers that is special, except the Renault concept car. Everything else, everywhere, is boring and dull as hell, even the BMW concept car that SUpercar Blondie had to be enthused about. The point is that BMW could not even get their car to drive electrically, it was just nonsense. If they would have put their concept car in production, it might have sold, but the Brandt siblings and the BMW board did not dare to do it.

Turns out, in the EV space, Tesla is _the_ old, established automaker, and most of the others (especially those coming from ICE cars) are the newcomers, with all the _new guy in an established field_ problems. All they said about the competition to Tesla is actually true in the opposite direction. Now I don't know why at least _some_ legacy automakers can't do this right - I think maybe the problem is that they just expect ICE tactics will work for EVs, and that turns out to just not be true. And that is how they developed their models. I think they are beginning to see their mistake (those terrible sales numbers are hard to not notice), so maybe their next generations will come closer. But again, ICE culture (or just established business culture) problem: those first models haven't come close to the usual expectations of how their cars will do in the market, and the next generation should be a number of years away. And now they don't really have these years they expected to have, and have to also explain to their shareholders why after investing so much money into these models, they have to invest even more money in different models. That can't be easy. And there's the pandemic, and the microchip shortage, and the battery shortage ... imagine starting to build ICE cars just when the oil crisis hit, only worse!

It's simple: Non-Tesla EV's are either (a) junk, (b) horrifically overpriced or (c) computer renderings of something you can't buy anyway... and mostly (d) all of the above. I hate having to come across all fan-boi-ish about this, and I'd *REALLY* like for there to be some serious competition - but there just isn't any. Then you add in the self-driving, the super-charger network, the over-the-air updates...it's just not a contest. I recently parked my Model 3 in a Walmart parking lot and a guy in his wife parked next to me in an ID-4. They guy asked me about my car - and his wife asked about comparisons. His ID-4 was actually a little cheaper than the Tesla - and had pretty comparable range. The ID-4 looked OK to me - but for a large SUV, it has very little trunk space - and no frunk. It's acceleration and speed are kinda pathetic. The guy's wife didn't know about the "Summon" feature - so I hauled out my phone and told the car to drive over to the far corner of the parking lot...and then I had it drive back and stop right next to me. You could see their jaws drop. I mentioned the joys of the SuperCharger network - and how I could pretty much recharge in 15 to 20 minutes...he said "That's OK, The VW dealership showed me where I could buy an adapter on Amazon - I have it on order so I can charge at Tesla chargers"...It was my turn to be surprised and confused - and I said that I didn't think that was actually possible - although Tesla have just begun to talk about allowing it. He showed me the Amazon page for the thing he'd ordered - and right there, in the teeny-tiny small print - it said "Allows you to charge at any Tesla *_DESTINATION_* charger"....I had to break the news to him that this meant he'd still need HOURS to charge - and that destination chargers aren't usually conveniently situated for road trips...he'd be better off looking for Electrify America chargers. By this point, the guy's wife was getting very anxious - and walked off into WalMart saying "I told you we should have bought the Tesla". The conversation dragged on a bit - the poor guy was trying to find SOMETHING his car was better at - and I just told him that I quite liked the styling - and it was cheaper. He said that VW had told him that the finish and panel gaps on the Tesla were awful...but then he looked at mine and said "They look good to me.". But when you go through the two vehicles, point-by-point, it's completely obvious that nobody should even consider buying a VW electric car...the are junk. Most of the promising Tesla-competitors are still vaporware - you can't buy a Rivian or a Nikola. The Electric Hummer doesn't exist. The Ford F150 Lightning is crazy expensive (and not that great) - the Chevy Bolt has to be charged in your driveway, just in case it bursts into flames and burns your house down! I've been a MINI Cooper fan all my life - but the electric MINI Cooper has a 110 mile range (Eeek!) and has a tame (by EV standards) 0-60 of 7 seconds and top speed of just 93 mph. Urgh! Truly, I hate monopolies - but Tesla's lead over the competition is AT LEAST 5 years - and when the FSD beta is fully released - that lead goes out to 10 years.

I'm not about to take some random stranger for a 10 minute freeway drive to show off the USEFULNESS of the AI...but summoning the car across a busy parking lot conveys the message in 30 seconds or less! If it can do that...then it can do the much easier thing of overtaking a big truck. I do use summon to back the car out of my garage when I need some space for my DIY project...it's very convenient for that.

I'm in France, I bought an Opel Corsa-e last year, and used the 10k euro difference to buy Tesla stock. I might sell my stock and buy a Y for cash. The supercharger network is the deal maker.

So how is the Corsa-e? My wife drives an ICE Corsa, no EVs in SA yet. Good move buying TSLA, I've made quite a bit of money on it.

@@austrobok2958 The car is quite good (for a non Tesla ). Range about 250km, 100kw DC & 7kw AC charging, holds the road well, same skateboard as the e208 & DS3. No OTA updates, Opel autopilot is the same as Fords blue cruise (disengages without warning) - watch the Sandy Monro video

For me I trust Tesla and their technology more than the legacy auto. Once the legacy autos build their own giga factories and have more than 1M vehicles in circulation, then I'll consider them. Building their own giga factory would signal some confidence in their design and technology.

My biggest obstacle for buying a Tesla was built and ride quality. However, after driving the MIC version of M3 this summer, I noticed that these two areas are pretty much fixed. Fit&finish is way better than previously and ride is fine with 18” wheels. Thay are improving so fast.

You have to ad the VW brands together. Combined they have a similar lineup. Tesla is better but VW ( Audi posche etc. ) offer a wider range of designs. In the end, if you want the best ev you have to buy Tesla.

Good luck getting parts for all those models. Mass production = lower prices. Diversification = higher prices.

@@CHMichael Give me a tail light that is interchangeable between multiple models. Any car company. I know parts are interchangeable, but you are only paying attention to the details and not defending your point. I know BMW and Ford are not the same company. Also Porsche and Mazda are not either... does not change the point. Parts are not interchangeable.

The exclusive Supercharging network. You can drive from anywhere to anywhere and be guaranteed easy and quick charging using their network reserved for Teslas. After that, the OTA updates that means your car will be like new for years to come. Phillip.

Like I said long time ago, when comes to purchasing EV, people wants the best for the money they will spend. Everyone will be looking at the price, performance, charging speed, and charging network availability. People are not stupid. Tesla cars are just MUCH better, stand out on every level.
@EinzigfreierName3 жыл бұрын
Yes, not all people are stupid and believe all the hype around Tesla. Look at the REAL sales numbers for a longer period of time and not just one month. 90% of EV buyers in Europe do NOT buy a Tesla but some other brand.

Love the looks of a normal Audi, except the ugly eTron. BMW also think they have to make it ugly if electric. I don't understand it. Why are they sabotaging themselves? Of course inside Tesla blows them all away, they never stood a chance, but a lot of people are swayed by looks. The Hyundai is a great car. I thought if I was in my early 20s then the Ioniq 5 would be tempting. Lots of unique features, especially the "snogging bench" by retracting the front console. But the price point is too high for young people. If they can knock 1/3 off the price I think it will be a best seller. Phillip.

I think the analysts have been wrong from beginning because of classifying Tesla as just a car company. But I also think it is a mistake to compare brands to a company. For example, Hyundai and kia are two brands in the same company so you need to add their figures together then compare at company level to Tesla. Same for VAG, Stellantis, etc.
