*When i said the TV's and monitors behind Goodwill end up across the globe at ewaste dump sites, i didnt mean that those specific ones behind Goodwill were going to end up there or that Goodwill does that - i dont know what happenns to those specific units... eWaste NIGHTMARE video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpXCi6eqgJiDq68 **When I talked about the lead in the glass tubes, what i meant was is that the glass is made with lead in the glass itself and that there is a high concentration of lead in the neck funnel area exactly where people often break them to recover the copper yoke. When that glass is broken the glass dust floats in the air, thus lead is inhaled which is bad....doing that over and over and over and over and over and over again is bad...

I rarely find CRT TV's but if i do I cannot afford to not scrap it for the yoke and Degauss cable. Sometimes breaking the glass cannot be avoided or it just happens by accident. Fortunately, we're dealing with a vacuum tube. The air flow is directed inwards when the vacuum is broken. So there is no gust of glass dust blowing out.

Mark i should have been mor especific, if you smash and crush the glass or the glass left inside the yoke intentionally with a large metal tool, yes it does make glasss dust..

I am a fan of your videos. In 1995 after a 20 year Navy Career fixing electronics, I went to work at Sony in San Diego making picture tubes keeping the equipment going. At the time they made 32, 27, and 20 inch TV CRT's and I was hired with 400 new tech's when they added 17 inch Monitor CRT's. Eventually they added 19 inch Monitor CRT's too. It was a 24/7 day a week production facility with 4000 people at it's peek. I was about 6 hours into the 12 hour process of making the CRT. I got it just after the vacuum was drawn and the CRT sealed. My area had 4 Fanuc Robots. Two held a copper coil up to the CRT and activated a Getter Flash inside the CRT that improved the vacuum. The other 2 Robots used a 4 inch paint roller to roll liquid carbon on the outside of the CRT. The Carbon on the inside and the carbon on the outside with the glass in the middle made the CRT a giant Capacitor. This is why after being un plugged, you can still get a shock from the big RED wire. This helped direct the electron beam along with the Yoke I see you removing. My area also put the metal band around the CRT with the 4 mounting holes. We did that by heating the band red hot and pulling it up from the face of the CRT as a Suction Cup held it. A layer of clear tape around the glass prevented the red hot band from damaging the glass. The band was heated by a RF Generator with a 3 turn copper coil and the 1 turn band. We also put the plastic cap on the pins and ran some high voltage on the CRT to help age the electron gun. I enjoyed my 2 years making CRT's but took a job in the Calibration Lab that was much more fun where I fixed power supplies and did calibration. After a total of 4 years in San Diego I moved closer to home in PA. I went to work at the Sony Service Center in Bristol, PA that was 3 hours from home in the Poconos. I fixed lots of stuff but mostly PlayStation 2's and Tivo. They closed the Service Center after 4 years and I moved home. It makes me sad now in a way that I was part of the problem of making the CRT's. We got the Panel or screen glass from Japan but we got the Funnel Glass from a Manufacture in Scranton, PA 50 miles away form me today at a place called Techno Glass. They shipped it all the way to San Diego and brought back all of our broken CRT Glass to re melt into funnel glass. A truck from San Diego was hijacked thinking it contained 32 inch TV's that they also made in San Diego but was actually big pallet boxes of broken glass. It would have made an interesting Soprano Show when they opened the first box and found broken glass.. LOL... The CRT Buildings in San Diego are long gone, just a dirt parking lot as is Techno Glass... Replaced by Technology... San Diego still has the Technology Center with hundreds of employees. Now we deal with the e waste... I watched with Sadness the videos of where CRT's go... Even from Australia. We are lucky that about 20 miles from me in Port Jervis, NY is a Electronic Waste Recycling place. They break down the stuff into sell-able product from what I have seen on a few visits dropping stuff off. Thanks for reading !!!!..... A play on your Thanks for WATCHING !!!! Good Pooch... :)

They made Philips CRT tubes here in South Australia for decades at the Hendon plant. They were used all over the world in just about every TV manufacture there is. And yes definitely earth the fly out before doing anything and also the 400-450v capacitor which also can give you a hell of a boot and can still be charged long after the set has been unplugged.

Hey! You still got those shoes! I remember you finding those waaaay long ago last year! They're looking good! And you're definitely right about the TVs, out in Canada they're also considered hazardous waste and it's illegal to dump them in regular trash. They have a couple dates throughout the year where cities will pick up electronic waste and dispose of it properly. Love that your pooch follows you on your adventure! I hardly saw him in there 'cause he was so calm.

Well contrary to popular belief Goodwill doesn’t just take accept any donation there’s certain things they don’t let us sell and if you ever actually try to donate a box tv like that an employee should tell you,you know “I’m sorry sir but we can’t take this” and people who frequently donate/shop at goodwill know that. and they do exactly your doing sneak to the dumpers and leave the stuff anyway because they don’t want to pay for the dump/landfills to take it

Goodwill sucks ass. They overprice all their crap and send most of good stuff to headquarters to put online so you are left in the store with a bunch of mediocore crap that is priced at or above retail. I have only found a few "good" Goodwill stores in my area. We had 2 new ones open up in our town and I rarely go there or find anything good to buy there. Savers is probably a close second as the worst ever!

liverust5 . Not because I work for them but let's be real. What's overpriced? Getting a Joesph a Banks suit that normally would cost 300.00 dollars for. 14.00? Getting and X box one with that normally 400.00 new for maybe 60 bucks? If you get shit for cheaper I question how good it is.

Maybe your Goodwill store is one of the "good" ones. Goodwill is a corporate shill of a thrift store, they pay their CEOs big bucks and little gets put back into the community. They may have a few good deals here or there or at certain stores, but in general, they sell clothes close to retail and these are USED clothes, NOT new that are donated. At Goodwill, expect to pay $5 to $10 for any decent used shirt. At other thrift stores, I get them for a couple bucks, no matter what it is. In fact, I bought a ton of clothes at my other local thrift stores that really were brand new without tags for as low as a quarter a piece, name f*ing brands!! In my hometown, I have 5 or 6 other thrift stores priced way below Goodwill. Do some research and you will see, Goodwill sucks ass

A phosphor, most generally, is a substance that exhibits the phenomenon of luminescence. Somewhat confusingly, this includes both phosphorescent materials, which show a slow decay in brightness (> 1 ms), and fluorescent materials, where the emission decay takes place over tens of nanoseconds. Phosphorescent materials are known for their use in radar screens and glow-in-the-dark materials, whereas fluorescent materials are common in cathode ray tube (CRT) and plasma video display screens, fluorescent lights, sensors, and white LEDs. Phosphors are often transition-metal compounds or rare-earth compounds of various types. The most common uses of phosphors are in CRT displays and fluorescent lights. CRT phosphors were standardized beginning around World War II and designated by the letter "P" followed by a number. Phosphorus, the chemical element named for its light-emitting behavior, emits light due to chemiluminescence, not phosphorescence Wilkpedia Enjoy. Do not break CRT,s EVER lead is the least of your worry.

Scrap Vulture, Glad to see you recycling and explaining a side of things that a lot of people don't think about. That being said, In reference to the GW's ability to clean up and dispose of hazardous waste that piles up behind their buildings, I do have a thought to add. If that non profit (Corporation) has enough money to pay their CEO Three Hundred and fifty thousand bucks + per year .... They could surely pencil in a set amount (of the Enormous Profits from donations), to pay the fees required to dispose of the waste, that is Indeed a Responsibility that belongs to them. If there was a conscience involved in these corporations, they would clean it up for public safety alone. Just sayin'. : )

Had to fact check you about lead in crt glass being concentrated in the neck. Applies to newer tubes so good job. I think the danger is overstated, but you can easily scrap the tvs without breaking the glass. Just touching it poses no threat. Heres an excerpt from wikipedia for anyone interested Older color and monochrome CRTs may have been manufactured with toxic substances, such as cadmium, in the phosphors. The rear glass tube of modern CRTs may be made from leaded glass, which represent an environmental hazard if disposed of improperly. By the time personal computers were produced, glass in the front panel (the viewable portion of the CRT) used barium rather than lead, though the rear of the CRT was still produced from leaded glass. Monochrome CRTs typically do not contain enough leaded glass to fail EPA TCLP tests. While the TCLP process grinds the glass into fine particles in order to expose them to weak acids to test for leachate, intact CRT glass does not leach (The lead is vitrified, contained inside the glass itself, similar to leaded glass crystalware).

So giving away "free" pair of shoes is the equivalent of stealing for the goodwill employee and would be fired if caught. It’s strange. They will sell Walmart used shirts for $4.99, when you buy them new for $3.00. They sell items with holes in them for $7.99. It’s like it went from a company that really was there to help down and out people to trying to gouge shoppers. Then you have people that are resellers acting like everyday is Black Friday elbowing and shoving people to the new bins. They should make a time each day or week when former military and homeless get first choice to ship.

It's a for profit company that has apparently told you NOT to trespass or steal their property. What about respecting other people and their property? You want to take their property for free and get paid for scrap while breaking things, "I shouldn't even be breathing this" and leaving trash behind. You do nothing to stop the toxic dumping but try to use it as some sort of excuse for your actions. What's the difference if someone saw a bicycle on your property that they felt you weren't going to use so they snuck in and picked it up when you weren't home as you are doing here?

I used to work at Goodwill about a year back or two, and to all the comments saying that Goodwill is expensive is ridiculous. You can find shirts from 1.99-4.49, and even then most goodwills have sales at least twice a week. "But EVERYTHING THEY GET IS FROM DONATIONS, whHy do THEY MAKE ME PAY??" Because they offer people a good paying job, people who are disabled, people without experience, ex-cons and give them a chance to make money with benefits if they go full time. And if something goes online, it's because we have a program that tells us what to send there and to price high. Not to mention all the programs they support, like the one I worked at supported an Excel Center that let people get their GEDs for free. Also, we weren't allowed to take most computers or TVs because we couldn't prove how safe they were whether it be because the electrical or actual glass part. Or things like mattresses because if we got bed bugs, the whole store would be shut down. In addition to that, people would straight up 'donate' gross underwear with stains, actual trash and I even found sex toys. It was gross. I don't ever regret working there and I will believe that it helps the community.

There is no good reason in Fayetteville to give your garbage to goodwill. We have Spring clean ups and fall clean ups free all you need is a water bill, city sanitation also allows you 3 times a year to schedule bulk clean up at no charge and then there is the hazardous waste site by the county jail, they do charge a small fee. I don't know about your area but a large percentage of US recycled electronics just gets shipped off to other countries to deal with. They strip it for what they can leaving the toxic components to endanger their citizens and rot in their own landfills. Often where it's cost effective our recycled goods just get dumped in our own landfills. Essentially, a good feeling ruse. See the KZbin video: The Circuit: Tracking America's Electronic Waste.

Some of that wood furniture that was being called "garbage" like the old tables, could easily be repaired. I've done it and it isn't that difficult. Goodwill and other places could have a "scratch and dent" section where they could put things out like that for pennies or free as there are people out there who can't even afford to shop at Goodwill, and would appreciate some of this "garbage".

Goodwill is disgusting. The way they constantly show pictures of people with downs syndrome on their posters saying, "New Opportunities" and yet at the 12 locations in my area I never see anyone with downs working. On another note, it sickens me that people think that when they donate something nice it is going to go to a family who really needs it when in reality it goes on eBay in lines the pockets of the CEO of Goodwill and all of the other overpaid corporate employees.

One thing among other things you didn’t mention is a CRT is under extreme vacuum when it’s intact, meaning it’s very dangerous if it’s not rendered safe, rendering safe is as simple as breaking off the small tip of glass at the end of the neck of the CRT, you break that small tip off to release the vacuum, the tube will be safe to handle then, you are lucky you haven’t had one implode on you while scavenging around. And most of the lead is in the front of the glass, that was put there to keep the X-ray radiation from harming the consumer while sitting in front of it, towards the back of the CRT you will see metal shields, they are there to help keep the service tech safe when troubleshooting the unit, I worked on TV’s and such for 40+ years and there are a set of rules to follow when handling and servicing them units. And you missed out on a lot of copper like some people below mentioned, the degaussing coil around the CRT. But above all when doing what your doing be careful around the CRT because if they have not been rendered safe like I said above then you are working around a small bomb.

Cathode ray tubes produce signal-generated light patterns in a (typically) round or rectangular format. Bulky CRTs were used in the black-and-white household television ("TV") sets that became popular in the 1950s, as well as first-generation, tube-based color TVs, and most earlier computer monitors. CRTs have also been widely used in scientific and engineering instrumentation, such as oscilloscopes, usually with a single phosphor color, typically green. Phosphors for such applications may have long afterglow, for increased image persistence. The phosphors can be deposited as either thin film, or as discrete particles, a powder bound to the surface. Thin films have better lifetime and better resolution, but provide less bright and less efficient image than powder ones. This is caused by multiple internal reflections in the thin film, scattering the emitted light. White (in black-and-white): The mix of zinc cadmium sulfide and zinc sulfide silver, the ZnS:Ag+(Zn,Cd)S:Ag is the white P4 phosphor used in black and white television CRTs. Mixes of yellow and blue phosphors are usual. Mixes of red, green and blue, or a single white phosphor, can also be encountered. Red: Yttrium oxide-sulfide activated with europium is used as the red phosphor in color CRTs. The development of color TV took a long time due to the search for a red phosphor. The first red emitting rare-earth phosphor, YVO4:Eu3+, was introduced by Levine and Palilla as a primary color in television in 1964.[21] In single crystal form, it was used as an excellent polarizer and laser material.[22] Yellow: When mixed with cadmium sulfide, the resulting zinc cadmium sulfide (Zn,Cd)S:Ag, provides strong yellow light. Green: Combination of zinc sulfide with copper, the P31 phosphor or ZnS:Cu, provides green light peaking at 531 nm, with long glow. Blue: Combination of zinc sulfide with few ppm of silver, the ZnS:Ag, when excited by electrons, provides strong blue glow with maximum at 450 nm, with short afterglow with 200 nanosecond duration. It is known as the P22B phosphor. This material, zinc sulfide silver, is still one of the most efficient phosphors in cathode ray tubes. It is used as a blue phosphor in color CRTs. The phosphors are usually poor electrical conductors. This may lead to deposition of residual charge on the screen, effectively decreasing the energy of the impacting electrons due to electrostatic repulsion (an effect known as "sticking"). To eliminate this, a thin layer of aluminium (about 100 nm) is deposited over the phosphors, usually by vacuum evaporation, and connected to the conductive layer inside the tube. This layer also reflects the phosphor light to the desired direction, and protects the phosphor from ion bombardment resulting from an imperfect vacuum. To reduce the image degradation by reflection of ambient light, contrast can be increased by several methods. In addition to black masking of unused areas of screen, the phosphor particles in color screens are coated with pigments of matching color. For example, the red phosphors are coated with ferric oxide (replacing earlier Cd(S,Se) due to cadmium toxicity), blue phosphors can be coated with marine blue (CoO·nAl 2O 3) or ultramarine (Na 8Al 6Si 6O 24S 2). Green phosphors based on ZnS:Cu do not have to be coated due to their own yellowish color.[2] Black-and-white television CRTs[edit] The black-and-white television screens require an emission color close to white. Usually, a combination of phosphors is employed. The most common combination is ZnS:Ag+(Zn,Cd)S:Cu,Al (blue+yellow). Other ones are ZnS:Ag+(Zn,Cd)S:Ag (blue+yellow), and ZnS:Ag+ZnS:Cu,Al+Y2O2S:Eu3+ (blue + green + red - does not contain cadmium and has poor efficiency). The color tone can be adjusted by the ratios of the components. As the compositions contain discrete grains of different phosphors, they produce image that may not be entirely smooth. A single, white-emitting phosphor, (Zn,Cd)S:Ag,Au,Al overcomes this obstacle. Due to its low efficiency, it is used only on very small screens. The screens are typically covered with phosphor using sedimentation coating, where particles suspended in a solution are let to settle on the surface.[2

These are just my personal opinions.Thank you for noting that Goodwill sometimes gets dumped on and then has to pay to dispose of things which the original owners didn't want to dispose of properly. You note that you are accessing dangerous materials- probably not wise. Check the rules- most Goodwill's and Salvation Army stores don't accept computer monitors, CPU's or tv's. For commenters- Where will you buy a shirt in good condition for less than $5? A good book to read is the Life Cycle of a Tshirt, which addresses how expensive is is to make clothing, and how the cheaper clothing is outsourced to people who live on subsistence wages . When I started a job working in an office, I bought all my clothes at Goodwill or Salvation Army, or a Mission Store, and always looked like the professional I am. You would be surprised at the people who don't want to pay anything. If they tried that at any other store, the police would be called. If someone is truly desperate, I would understand, but most people that can afford to have a motor bike and licenses and inspection and insurance, computer and high speed internet, and smart phones with fun apps can probably afford to buy a shirt for $5. Who really wants to rip off Goodwill, a legit charity that helps so many people? I do understand the need to dispose of these materials properly and that is why I think people are generally referred to proper disposal locations. I have seen people dump things at the sidewalk at Goodwill and Salvation Army without waiting to talk with an employee, probably because they know they are breaking the law by dumping on Goodwill property. It is sad that private citizens don't take responsibility to dispose of things properly. Safe Journeys. :) I know there were many times as a student and human service worker when I could not afford much but could find something nice that I needed at an affordable price: I was always grateful for Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Mission Stores. Just my personal opinions based on observations. I guess some people are getting really desperate when they don't want to pay $5 for a shirt. Maybe we have some much stuff that we don't appreciate what we have anymore. Are we becoming a disposable nation?

lead is natural occurring in nature, unless you start chewing on it and add it to your oatmeal as sweetener or melt it and inhale it that way it doesn't do anything. Lead is solid in room temperature, so even touching it will not do any harm since it's not going to your system. Just wash your hands like you do after you poop.

From a legal standpoint, disposing of certain electronics can cost money for a business, especially depending on the state. Goodwill probably has no interest in having old CRT televisions or monitors in 2018. An individual can just dump an old obsolete piece at Goodwills feet when they are closed and drive off with no worries, I guess.

They were built that way because LCD technology did not exist at the time and served man very well for approximately 100 years. When built right, a CRT TV set would often last 20-30 years, unlike modern TVs. The lead is in the glass to block X-rays. Don't break the glass tube and no problems. The phosphor and broken glass "powders" that fill the air after a CRT implosion are what you stay away from. :)

One, Goodwill's reason for existing is not to resell used goods. Or give you a tax deduction for donating. They are an employment agency of last resort for people that have past histories that make it hard to get the work experience to get a real job elsewhere. Drug problems, legal problems, lack of employment history etc. Two, the individual stores are not stand alone entities, they are part of a group with a central clearing warehouse where 95% of the donations go. It is sorted and redistributed from there. Some returns to the stores for resell, but most goes to specialist vendors, All those monitors will be going to the Bigger scrapers for recycling. The unsalable clothing goes to other recyclers that specialize in linen fibers, the metals are sorted out for other recyclers., even the books you donate go to either book resellers or pulp recyclers. They also do just trash a lot of the donations because there is no market for them. But rarely tell the donators that they won't accept the donations, thus actually saving the donators the cost of rubbish removal. Less than 20% goes into land fills. So by scrapping from their donation pile you are stealing from them and reducing the money they have available to hire others that need the jobs. And they do hire more than is needed for the work they have as that is the point of their charity. Congratulations, you are stealing from those in need of work to feed their children and put a roof over their heads to keep the m from being homeless.

Where I live, all thrift stores have enclosed their dumpsters within brick walls and gates so you can't get in and retrieve anything. I tried to retrieve a perfectly good Apple ][ computer and got chased off. Soon after that, they built a wall around their dumpsters. All of the major thrift/2nd hand stores now have locked up their dumpsters. They had that Apple ][ in the store for 2 months for $80 and it didn't sell. I was waiting for them to lower the price to around $20 but they never did. Eventually I saw it in the dumpster and tried to get it out and got chased off.

It should be the first thing you do after you have removed the back and then you should short every large volt capacitor to eliminate risk of shock before touching the power board.
