This is the short version: We used to 'dumpster dive' too! The long version is next: I lived in a very remote place without ANY stores (in the early 1960s) except only a small grocery store with minimal supplies. We didn't have garbage pickup in our tiny town so we all drove out to 'the dump' for entertainment about every 3-4 weeks. Kids would watch the wildlife and Dad would go 'shopping'. My Dad was one of those who could fix absolutely everything. If a part was needed, he would make one if it couldn't be bought. A lot of people did not know how to fix things and dumped them when still relatively new. We got our bicycles that way - he would fix them and repaint with another color, all kinds of extra appliances, lawn mowers, and whatever, that he would give to seniors or anyone in need because he just liked to fix things. What we all had looked new though since he also knew how to spray paint things to give them new life. We were an early reuse, recycle, repurpose, gardening, composting family. My Mom had a large vegetable garden, preserved, canned, froze, and dehydrated our food that she then cooked from scratch. She had fruit trees and berry bushes and we foraged for other berries, mushrooms, and caught fresh fish and crab. The TV in a cabinet that we brought from the city sat there covered with a cloth and houseplants because there wouldn't be a signal here for a few more years. Those were the days where we had conversations at the dinner table and read books. Then we actually got 1 channel of sound but with 'snow' until at least midnight when the programming stopped for the day. To this day I still cannot waste things, especially food. I shudder when I see people dump out food from serving platters or cooking pots instead of transferring those bits to a small container. That's another meal for me to enjoy. Some people really do not understand why they are unhealthy, allergic to everything, stressed out, and broke from buying crap they don't need.

worked at a fireworks stand... kid would unload onto a table and leave a few in the box then slice an x into the top n throw it away... he did it on several boxes... next day he came with a truck and asked the boss if he could have some boxes as he was moving... we didnt catch on till the second year... second year he claimed he wanted boxes for a friend who was moving to college soon... the boss decided to "help" he got caught and eventually confessed to the first yr too... first year our stand registered a net loss over 2grand... kids house was searched... he had stolen goods from all over. did 5yrs in jail and had to pay restitution.

TheMastaPlan It's all technicalities. Technically those dumpsters are private property, not public. Removing items from private property is technically theft, even if it is a dumpster. That's why dumpster diving is technically illegal and could get you into a lot of trouble if the store owner wanted to be a dick and call the cops

Cory R Well on a Federal level it's legal but most localities have laws against it. They say federal law supercedes state/local laws but it's really the other way around. The federal age of consent is 12 but in every state you'd go to prison for having sex with a 12 year old. Same with pot being illegal federally but legal in many states. Local law really supercedes federal law in practice, and most localities have some sort of ban on dumpster diving.

I remember years ago I would take my dog on a walk across the street into a business center. I would always peek into the dumpsters. My little dog couldn't figure out what I was doing... not interested. One day I looked in one of the dumpsters and there were plates of BBQ briquette and sausage. I guess they must had a party and had food left over which they threw out. I picked out some of the food and gave it to my dog. He ate and ate until he was full as a tick! After then everything we would go into that business park he would head for the dumpsters. I think I did find some BBQ chicken but that was about all. It didn't take long for my little dogie to catch on to the dumpster run ! You never know one person's trash is another person's treasure.

D. Hansel I put my children through private christian school from garbage days. I lived in west palm beach at the time and twice a year on palm beach they would have the big garbage day. The rich there would throw out furniture and all kinds of stuff. I couldn't believe the stuff they threw away. I would rent a uhaul and pick it up. Bring home and touch up what was needed. Then put an Ad in the penny saver for a big sale. I made between 4500-7000 on their garbage. Praise God for rich peoples garbage. They put my kids thru school. I hear now they make garbage days a big secret.

Their stuff is garbage because they don't pay the employees enough? they don't pay non-skilled trade labor that make more than other stores enough? Walmart starts at $10 a hour where I live. When I was 17 I worked at albertsons for $5.15/hour then went to work at walmart as a basket collector and made $7.50 and got a discount card on products, and would of got a Sams club card when I turned 18 if I had of still worked there. Night stockers make up to $18-19 an hour. Also, they do NOT force anyone to work there, everyone who works there had to fill out application and they are free to leave at any time. They higher special needs and disabled people just to greet people at the door. I'm not trying to be rude but gotta wonder what store you shop at? From your comments i am thinking it has to be one where it would be hard to shop because you got to hold your pinky up because it's that fancy They don't "lock up there garbage. Like many businesses they have a door on the inside that connects to the dumpster which compacts the trash. If it was open on the outside too then wind from dumpster would blow the smell in and you'd open the door to throw something away- have birds and raccoons attacking you and shit

You're lucky she was nice about it. I've never been caught at anywhere I've dived at BUT Half price. Got caught TWICE, once in the day and once at night, several months apart from each other. It's in a highly populated area, and I go there about once every 2weeks-month so I see the same guys who busted me for doing it & threatened to call cops, but they see so many people so doubt they recognize me. I learned that the Half price store closes at 10:00PM. They usually pack up & mop floors around 10:15 and finish around 10:20-10:25, then they leave around 10:30-10:35 (I sound like I'm planning a bank heist but that's how you have to go about it sometimes if you don't want to get caught)... Stores usually require workers to stay after closing time for about 20 minutes (That's what GameStops worldwide require).

Amy Cummings. I deliver to several Walmarts weekly. They throw those pallet jacks out all the time. Usually they are broken but fixable. Mostly the hydraulics in them blow thier seals or they lose thier bearings on the wheels. They get abused/misued by people who don't know or don't care how to operate them. If they were still working and the store still thought they were valuable but didn't need them, they would send them back to Bentonville on "used asset" trucks. If you think it's crazy what they toss outside the store, you should see what gets thrown away INSIDE. The amount of waste is insane.

+gunsnroses4716 I first moved to florida in the 80's. I loved it. Beautiful place. Came back in early 2000's to retire. Bought a house outright & planned on being a bum & then the market crashed & my house is worth crap I can't get my investment back. So, I'm stuck like chuck. Florida's not old Florida. It's nasty, filled with nasty low life drug addicts & gang bangers. Shootings everyday. I'd gladly leave this dump.

firmly grasp it they probably killed those people and then grounded them up for meat patties and now you're eating those bad people in you're hamburgers and tacos at the fast food at least that's what people say on yu tube videos in the deep web I am not eating beef anymore or meat for that fact I am going back to being a vegetarian like me and family were in the eighties and only feeding my newest family chicken with the bone on it who do eat meat. Their is a lot of cases of missing people to much where do they go probably in you're Big Mac lol.

I don't know why people are so up tight about taking from what will be trashed anyway. When I was remodeling my home, I had a dumpster parked out front and my one neighbor would complain to me that someone was coming by and removing stuff. I told him I could care less and all they did was make more room for me. Whoever took the time to look made a good buck for their time.
