Because we don't even see dust falling down into the holes, it just stays propped up on this imaginary surface, or is that to do with lack of gravity too? Della Duck! This isn't just her introduction in the show; it's her first proper introduction ever. Older media made passing references to her or brief cameos, but this is the first time ever that she gets an actual appearance and establishes a character. I love that they made her share characteristics of each of her family members. She has Scrooge's tenacity, Donald's temper, Huey's love of the Junior Woodchucks, Dewey's attitude, and Louie's ability to analyze adventures (the last of which was established in an earlier episode when Scrooge told Louie about it). And even with all that, she doesn't feel like a cut-and-paste character. She feels like a real person with her own unique characteristics in addition to the shared ones. It was dumb of her to take the ship before it was ready, but keep in mind that she was just figuring on taking it out for a quick test flight and being back within a day. She made a mistake, but she suffered for it way more than could be reasonably expected.

6:15 correction, she wasn’t planning on being gone for long, it was a TEST RUN of the Spear of Selene and as we know from season 1 (the last crash of the sunchaser) neither della or Scrooge knew there was a cosmic storm coming so there was no way Della could’ve known that if she took the spear of Selene for the test run, she wouldn’t be back in time for her sons to hatch. It was a bad mistake on her part but not an intentional abandonment of her family.

Fan Fact: Back in the day the community also asked why was Della not found by the rescue ships and the answers was surprisingly realist and bleak aka "not enough funds" even a couple fans made a reddit post calculating the average cost oif the mission in USD (and for the life of me I cant find it anymore hope someone still has it), yes Scrooge is the richest Duck in the world but even for him building an entire fleet of ships was a huge endeavor so you can assume the pilots flew over a sector, saw no visible wreckage or sign and marked it as clear (landing and checking everytime they saw a smoke cloud on the moon is not realistic) maybe at some point there would be a double check of suspicious areas but with the vultures pulling Scrooge away that pretty much sealed Della's fate.

The way Della is depicted in this episode, she clearly didn't feel mature enough to be a parent and had a bit of a freakout, and that led her to decide to have this last grand, spontaneous adventure that backfired spectacularly. I really love Della's character in this show. Most Disney shows would either just have either made her a perfect saintly mother figure or else a female copy of Donald, but the showrunners went their way to make her a proper, unique character with her own flaws and issues. She really organically feels like Donald's sibling, rather than a distaff counterpart.

Soooo, all those times I doubted that she was really Scottish cuz she didn't say "bless me bagpipes" etc? I confess I was wrong to doubt. I mean, absolutely resolved to not forgive ONE mistake (admittedly a big one) no matter how many times over Della payed for it? Most Scottish thing ever: - stranded on the moon? No forgiveness! - missed her boys being hatched? No forgiveness!! - had to cut off her own leg to survive? No forgiveness!!! - subsisting on a substance she hates - FOR YEARS? No forgiveness!!!! - has to fight a giant alien horror to preserve her shelter/escape hope? NO FORGIVENESS!!!!! That's some real Scottish-level grudge bearing there! I love it. Also, Penumbra is a strong contender for my favorite Ducktales character, (though Magica is tough to beat.)

Della has not consciously abandoned her unhatched children. Spear of Selene was a complete, flight-ready, spaceship. And Della crushed it only because of the freaky COSMIC STORM, that no one could predict. For Duck family adventures is pretty casual. Scrooge take three preteen boys to life threatening adventures and hardly anyone blame him. So taking a quick test flight to space, to "give you boys the stars" is on the more reasonable side of Duck family school of parenting🤷‍♂

I've watched movies about the first astronauts, who were army pilots first, and the one trait about them that strikes me about them is they are inherently risk-takers - it's what makes them great pilots and astronauts. So I think it's just in Della's nature to take risks, and she'd been a fine and capable pilot until this point, she had no reason to think she couldn't do the test flight and be back in time... until she wasn't. Who suspects a cosmic storm? Her mistake was seeing the Spear of Selene as being like any other plane and space as like any other adventure. And to be fair, she didn't try to endanger anyone else - she took the entire risk on herself, and that is perhaps what lead to her downfall but also shows she prioritizes others' safety over her own.

I love that when Della is psyching herself up in her attempts to get back, she is singing the Melody to her lullaby. As so many people have pointed out, it is the famous track from the game, so it was very noticeable for some people on the first pass. 5:22 all of this is reference to the NES game. In that game Scrooge goes looking for treasure on the moon and the theme Capcom had for the moon stage was iconic. Sometime in the early 2010’s a parody song KZbinr named Brentalfloss took the NES theme song and turned it into a banger song critiquing the logic of being able to breath on the moon. When it came time to remake the NES game with updated graphics by WayForward, they included a plot device of oxygen chewing gum to explain how Scrooge was able to breath on the moon. And then the Disney show took all of that and turned it into this episode. Della’s theme is the capcom moom theme. The chewing gum is a reference 30 years in the making. So while I understand from an outsider’s perspective it seems like a convenience, just know that for us longtime Ducktales fans this was all made for us!

So, I googled it, & the Moon is 37.9km^2, or the equivalent of 5 Australias. On top of which, only half of the moon faces the Earth & takes approximately a month to go through a complete day cycle. Basically, even if Scrooge looked for her on the moon (which all indications say he did), there isn’t guarantee he’d find her.

When you think about it, Dellah has a lot in common with Donald. -She has plenty bad luck -She has the trademark McDuck Temper -She acts reckless more often than not Also no worries the show makes it a clear point that it was Della's fault for taking the rocket over the seasons.

I find that the way they wrote Della in this episode is…very interesting to say the least. Because on the one hand, I totally understand why she loses it over the course of the transmissions. Every one of us would do the exact same thing if we were separated from our families for an extended period of time (though not as long as she’s been; let’s not go completely crazy here). But on the other hand, the episode makes it very clear that she carries a little bit of all of her family members, which isn’t a bad thing in itself - that’s probably what I would’ve done - but for the Disney fandom’s first real look at Della in 80 years, a once in a lifetime chance to see what makes her tick…I think they leaned a little too much on the traits she shares with Donald as opposed to any other Clan McDuck member. Again, it does help to further the story and in that case, God bless, but with that in mind, I do realize exactly why I was so hesitant to give her a chance back in the day. Despite everything, this episode still has the lullaby, and of course, those locks, so all of the above can be excused in the name of warming one’s heart. @ Perhaps I should’ve phrased that better. What I meant was that they gave her so many traits and elements of the rest of the family - and not *just* Donald, as you pointed out - that I felt she failed to be portrayed, at least in this episode, as a character that can be more separated from those we’ve already known and loved for well over a season by this point, which I feel doesn’t inherently lend itself well enough to a full introduction to someone who had been on the back burner for nearly a century at the time. Oftentimes I write/say things before I realize how they sound so that’s why I threw Donald under the bus when he didn’t quite deserve it. And like I said, there’s still plenty of good that comes out of this characterization, especially in relation to the episode’s plot. Hope we’re more clear about that now

Seems she's also got Donald's terrible luck, along with his temper. Since that was a big plot point with him, that may explain some of the very unlucky plot moments, like the pilots not checking the moon, or the monster being able to drag her rocket down, could very well be chalked up to supernaturally terrible luck.

I'm not sure if anything is every stated outright, but my assumption from the end of this episode was always that Scrooge's scout ships couldn't find Della because the Moonlanders' holographic projection basically cloaked her presence on the surface. EDIT: Also, Penumbra 🥰
