A song written and composed by Daryl Hall. It was first recorded in 1980 by the American duo Hall & Oates but was not released as a single. A cover version of the song by Paul Young became an international hit in 1985, reaching No. 1 in the US and No. 4 in the UK

Do They Know it's Christmas was written in 1984 by Bob Geldof in reaction to news reports of the Ethiopian famine. It was recorded by Band-Aid, a 37 member supergroup featuring some of the most popular British music acts at the time, including Phil Collins, Kool & the Gang, The Boomtown Rats, Duran Duran, Wham!, and Spandau Ballet. It was released December 3, 1984 to raise money for famine relief. After the release of the record, Geldof organized the July 13, 1985 Live-Aid worldwide concert, also for the purpose of raising money for famine relief.

@@kennethbauscher1489 What's that got to do with the comment about Do They Know It's Christmas? No one is saying Paul Young wrote that or this song? Odd comment. It is interesting, but someone already made that comment on response to the video, not this thread. I'm not sure how much of a songwriter Paul was, to me he was an amazing singer. Many great singers didn't write their own songs.

This song was written by Daryl Hall and originally performed by Hall & Oates on their album Voices in 1980 and was strongly considered as one last single off of that monumental album. Paul Young was incredibly smart to cover such an amazing song and he sort of shortened and simplified it. You definitely must listen to the original Hall & Oates version. You will not be disappointed.

Speaking of Paul Young, there was a song called Feed the World (Do They Know It’s Christmas) written and performed to raise money to help relief efforts for the famine in Ethiopia in the mid 80s. It is the British equivalent of USA for Africa. The singers involved included Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, Bono, and Phil Collins, among others.

I didn't know it was Daryl who wrote this, but that makes sense...because I always thought this would be the type of song he would sing. The arrangement of the music sounded like him, too. I could definitely see him singing this. He was definitely in the Blue eyed soul list. I'd say in the top spots, with the Righteous Brothers, Michael McDowell, George Michael, Boy George, Michael Bolton...and last, but definitely not least, Steve Perry.

Cute little story about the backing vocalists: Paul used to work with a group of female backing vocalists until the time came to work on the parent album this song is from, when the group wanted to do their own solo music deal. He was happy for them, expecting that they would continue working with him simultaneously, but they didn't want to, so they have less vocals on his second album than the debut. He decided to switch the whole thing up and get male vocalists, a particular group who were willing to sing on record but not willing to tour because they felt they were too old. Paul insisted, and they went. Afterwards the group agreed it was the most fun tour they'd ever been a part of lol. Please react to: Level 42 - Something About You.

Paul's other major hit (in the US, at least) was a song called "Come Back and Stay", which was originally done by LA proto-new wave band The Nerves. Amber was absolutely right; Paul was at the forefront of the mid 80s British "blue eyed soul" movement, alongside artists like Annie Lennox and Paul Carrack. At the dawn of the 80s, he was actually in a Motown-style vocal group (matching suits and everything!) called the Q-Tips. @@ginasarmina4728 Yes! IN their video of the song did they dismantle a mannequin to the chorous of the song: 'every time you go away, you take a piece of me with you.' It was hilarious or I may be confusng this with another version of the song.

Oh Paul Young is just amazing. I was very little in the early 80s but loved his songs and would sing then at the top of my voice. Just listen to more of him, you won't be disappointed x

OMG, I remember slow dancing to this song so many times at school dances in the 80's! My 48-year-old heart feels like it's 12 again and asked to slow dance by the boy I like when I hear this song.

This song was played in the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles starring Steve Martin and John Candy. I always liked that part when they finally made it home to Steve Martin’s wife for Thanksgiving, and also found out John Candy’s wife had passed away. This song was perfect for that scene. Great song choice and video Jay and Amber.

P, T & A is one of my fave movies. And yes. When this song appears in the movie is touching. Paul Young gave his best in this record. (Yes. I said record! Go 80's! 😊)

Jay and Amber, thanks for another great reaction! I really do appreciate the both of you taking the time to share your reactions with us! Have either of you ever listened to any music by the group BREAD? If you haven't, please give them a try, because you won't be sorry! I've seen others react to their music, and they end up LOVING IT! Most of the time, they have a nice and easy, soft rock sound that's very romantic, and will pull at your heartstrings! DAVID GATES was their lead singer, and I really feel that the two of you would enjoy hearing his voice, along with the beautiful music that this 70's/80's group put out. Please start with EVERYTHING I OWN, but you'll also enjoy some of their other hits too: BABY I'M-A-WANT-YOU, MAKE IT WITH YOU, IF, GUITAR MAN, AUBREY, DIARY, IT DON'T MATTER TO ME, and LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE. David Gates biggest hit as a solo artist was GOODBYE GIRL. But he also had hits with NEVER LET HER GO, and CLOUDS. Thanks again for reacting to all the choices that you have made in the past. You two are my favorite reactors to watch.... and I watch a LOT of different reactors! Have a blessed day you two!
