Hozier is back with a new single called "Francesca". I reviewed him already on this channel, let's see if this song is as good as the last. What do you think? Honestly? He is praised by his fans a lot but is his music really as good as they say it is. I want YOU to tell me.
You can watch the video for Hozier's song Francesca here: • Hozier - Francesca (Of...

What gets me about Hozier is not only the level of vocal control he has, but the tastefulness and creativity with which he employs it. He takes a *lot* of care with his phrasing and articulation, but is flexible enough that every performance of the same song feels distinct. This thoughtfulness extends to his writing style as well. You always get the sense that the final product is a perfect realization of the musical vision underlying it, which reflects a high degree of compositional fluency and resourcefulness. It's the same sense of confidence and purpose you get from something by Pink Floyd or Beethoven - every edge is sharp, every facet is polished, everything's exactly where it's supposed to be.

I get you, but also, because Take me to Church has been played so much I feel like we don't really listen to it like it should be listened to (the fact that Hozier recorded it in his attic and it shows doesn't help with that). My favorite rendition of that song is not even from Hozier, it's the Cover by Eva Noblezada, you should search for it and give it a listen, it had opened my ears to the actual marvel of the song that I haven't been able to appreciate before because I heard it so many times.

I'm one of these really lucky people who sees Hozier around where i live. Wicklow. It's profoundly beautiful with the beach and hills on your doorstep. Hozier is one of these Irish artists who genuinely comes from a family of real craftspeople and musicians. I watched his recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music and no matter how much i try to dismiss him as a hippie vegan for students etc, I cant. Because he is extremely impressive when interviewed, very humble but confident - unbelievably knowledgable on music and literature (although claims he doesnt read, some stuff just sticks) he is aware of his own talent - and not actually fake. I think he is a formidable artist and Take me to Church is a masterpiece and a takedown of the Catholic church and a fierce advocacy of LGBT rights etc. All the good things. Hozier is a legend.

Hozier is so exceptionally consistent from studio to live settings, you'll sometimes find videos out there of him playing his songs in tiny, generally shitty venues and inexplicably they sound as good as the recording. All of that to say - he's quite good, yeah.

I just discovered his new album Unreal Unearth and everything about it is phenomenal, from the chords to the lyrics, the symbolism, the raw emotion translated to beautiful poetry His work is so well thought and polished, I'm literally breathing this album and I'm in shambles And yet it's not something everybody's taking about, so if anything I'd say he's very underrated

In my opinion, a lot of singers to me can be vocally talented but have not much heart or soul in their singing, which I believe is much more important and when when you get a mix of both incredible talent and soul those am the singers I love the most, Hozier is one of them.

Audio engineer here. The best trick for controlling that tasteful reverb is known as the 'Abbey Road' technique where you basically filter out everything below around 600Hz (at a 12dB slope) and above around 6kHz (adjust to taste) on its way to the reverb. That way you get a really nice mid-range tail that doesn't at all accentuate the fizzy stuff and also helps with not 'muddying' up your mix with all the low end crap invading the verb. Resist overusing compression; rather automate volume or clip gain first and then compress where necessary / desired. 👍

Great stuff Justin as always! Due to your wonderful voice and great sense of relative pitch, your Acapela intro and outro themes were squarely within Em. (I suspect muscle memory in your vocal folds also played a part in this). Your final "again" at the end of the outro was closer to an Eb. My guess is that's because you did a bit of spoken-word between the final "rides" and "again", and also because the siren outside your hotel (understandably) put you off! (the siren was an Ab, btw). Anyway great work, thanks for introducing this Old Fart to a lotta cool contemporary stuff, and as we say here Downunda": "I like the cut of your Gib" (whatever the F*%# that means!)

His voice is undeniably gorgeous, but I'm still blown away from hearing/seeing 'Rock and Roll Deserves to Die'. I commented that I wanted to scream 'Holy FU€K' and you could hear it across the pond. But turns out your across the states, since I'm on the East Coast. I loved the song so much and the cheeky video was bloody brilliant. YOUR voice is just unbelievable and reminds me so much of Freddy Mercury. I hate that I just recently discovered you, but I had some addiction issues when The Darkness made it big. I wasn’t listening to new music because I preferred Janis Joplin, Queen, Metallica, The Doors, Hendrix, Prince, Tina Turner, GNR, AC/DC, etc. However, The Darkness checks off all the boxes for me and I'm officially a huge ❤ fan. I'm totally enamored with your voice and talent. I was familiar with 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love,' and the video brought me pure delight. It reminded me of being a teenager and watching MTV videos. It was fantastic. Cheers and enjoy California.

Hey Justin..here’s a friendly mix tip from some bloke on the interweb 😮💩 if ur getting too much sibilance in your vocal reverb or delay maybe try using a high pass filter (may be built into the reverb or use an eq) to cut out the frequencies where the sibilance lies usually around 5k. This will set the effect further back and stop it distracting from the main vocal track. Compressing the reverb Ive found can bring out the sibilance more as it doesn’t remove any frequencies it just brings up the lower volume content and squishes the loud especially with heavier compression and them pesky Sssssss can get piercing. But hey you probably already know this…but maybe not. Love and tea cakes xx

I love JHRA, but maybe because Hozier is my favorite, I would like to say that one song doesn't lead one down the Hozier rabbit hole. Or at least it didn't me. I was first snagged by that gorgeous voice. It's a lovely and powerful instrument, clear and strong, without relying on it's beauty entirely. There's character and nuance, and most importantly, heart there. Then I let the songs play until I was pushed down toward Wonderland by the music. I love a hook and there isn't a Hozier song that hasn't played in a loop in my brain. Plus, it's unlike any other music I've heard. There's blues, yes, but also a love of gospel, folk, pop, and chorale music (and why not with a voice that can actually handle that kind of range). There's also something I assume is Irish. That variation in tone that I hear in Delores O'Riordan and Sinead O'Connor. Then the lyrics got me. Because I was listening again and again, the words dug in and there was so much to consider I found myself searching them online and studying them like the poetry they are. Lastly, once I was familiar with all the songs (and I mean all because in the times when Hozier put us in the desert, there were gritty videos of him as a 20 year old to mull over), I could appreciate the range of songs and the unifying philosophy behind them. For all the beautiful wording, there is an underlying rawness and authenticity that feels intimate. This is an artist who really gives his gift, and I find myself deeply appreciative rather than simply entertained. I've been to two shows and they are so much about the music. Hozier live is better than his studio recordings. His band shares his perfectionism and soul and he seems such a genuinely lovely human on top of it. Thank you.

I've always preferred the term "refrain" because it is what it says. "Chorus" implies something grander with multiple voices, and we don't always get multiple voices. But I'm pretty sure the jury is out and the terminology is set in stone by culture and I won't get my way.

Hozier is always hope through anything you counter in life. Periods. I lost my brother, my best friend at age 43 but what If I actually came to let him listen to this song. It's a song for the desperates. And for the ones who are still living. And for the souls as well. Sorry Justin, but you got it all wrong. We all have one god no matter where we're from or what we believe in. His best appreciated song was "Enjoy the Silence" by DM, a band we both love. And Hozier stood up for LGBT people, non religious but spiritual people, making a hommage to Nina Simone. What in the world is overrated about him? Maybe you shouldn't have done that in Los Angeles btw. Away from the noise would be better, mate.

*Dear Justin* why have I never seen you review the band *GHOST* ??? I bet that you will love this band, reminds me of the darkness tbh, kinda old fashioned heavy rock sound with melodic vocals, just released a EP of four great covers (inc Tina Turner) *PLEASE REVIEW GHOST* 👻👻👻👻👻
