What's life like in South Korea? South Korea actually has a pretty high standard of living and is one of the most prosperous countries in the world, ranking above average in housing, civic engagement, and education.

Their was a time when South Korea was a very poor nation. The North was actually better off due to support from the Soviet Union. And now it's one of the most technologically advanced countries on the planet.

RBX2 Well, US was very reluctant about supporting SK unlike western Europe. That's why we sent hundreds of thousands of soldiers to Vietnam to guarantee US money is being given to us.

South Korea sent troops for an "Increase" in economic aid and military aid. They were already receiving that. Even today, the US still contributes to South Korea. For example, not including freedom from attack/national security,, the US still gives aid to South Korea in the form of Disaster Preparedness funds. Also, the US still contributes in Technology transfers....same as what Japan did a long time ago. An example of this is South Korea's KFX stealth fighter project. The US gave, not sold, 21 of the 25 technologies to South Korea. Just a side note about that though, it's supposed to be South Korea's domestic stealth fighter, but the project is being largely done by Lockheed Martin, and the engine is made by GM

Okay, I gotta make this clear. About 2 years ago, when I was writing my thesis, I did a little bit of research about South Korea's plastic surgery and it turns out, those numbers don't really represent what really is going on. Yes, South Koreans do have more cosmetic procedures done compared to the rest of the world, but those numbers don't all mean they get a nose-job or a major plastic surgery done; because South Korea's healthcare in South Korea is readily accessible and more affordable, South Koreans go to the doctors a lot more often and that includes plastic surgeons, too. Also, the number includes simple procedures like whitening, anti-aging, and other non-invasive treatments, so it is quite exaggerated than what it actually is.

Mason K Ummm. Sorry to break this up to you, but the health care service in SK does not include plastic surgery.

This is a real problem though. You can't find a single female celebrity in SK whose face hadn't had a touch of surgeon's knife. Some Chinese tourists travel to SK just for plastic surgery.

exactly, I've done the research too. I don't have plastic surgery none of my friends do. there might be a higher proportion in the bigger cities too I reckon as I'm from the countryside but still the numbers that foreigners tout are ridiculously high. i figured later that partly it is plastic surgery being a broad all-encompassing term like you mentioned, from aging to acne to eyelids to weight reduction. I can see where the misconception that we are all plastic comes from but the studies made are kinda old as well and not as comprehensive of a survey. I've heard it as mainly conducted in central Seoul areas like myeongdong, hongdae, junggu where results may be skewed in favor to support their research. places unlike outer seoul, the provinces and satellite cities where most of the population live.

1/3 women and 1/5 men have plastic surgery based on "opinion polls". The kind of polls that give you statistics like "73% of Americans cannot locate America on a map". You have to be deluded to actually believe that kind of nonsense especially if you live in South Korea, but now we have people broadcasting that misinformation as if it is common knowledge. ISAPS has released the objective statistics for their prevalence in particular and even then I would prefer if ISAPS datasheets would adjust for the disproportionate amount of foreigners(mostly from china/usa/japan) that come to Korea to receive plastic surgery procedures.

I live in South Korea and I see it daily. Many of my students have nose jobs and parents have told me they are already planning their daughters double eyelid surgery when she turns 18 - she's 5. Every subway station has plastic surgery ads as well. That's cool you read a paper, but visit the country, it's everywhere.

exactly lots of wrong points, statistics and data have been proven to exaggerate plastic surgery in Korea. The term plastic surgery is a largely broad term and the areas where surveys were polled genuinely skew in favor of the misconception that all Koreans are plastic. Central Seoul does not represent the whole of korea.

It's not that bad. It's Asia's 4th largest economy, and it's the world's 11th or 10th largest economy, depending on the metric. The mass transit is efficient, and thanks to the KTX (it's essentially the Korean equivalent to the Japanese 'Bullet Train' or France's TGV) you can get anywhere withing the country in about 3 1/2 hours. The food is good, the people are standoffish at first, but they are really friendly. They're not really that worried about North Korea or Kim Jong Un. They're more worried about Trump than anything.

This is not their daily life, it's general info abt Korea. In reality, Koreans earn lots of money but are overworked. They usually work for more than 10 hours per day including weekends. Students are not so different. After school, due to intense competition to get into good schools in the future, they attend an academy to polish subjects they're not particularly good at. They are usually tired, doesn't have time for themselves because if they don't receive excellent education, the chances of getting a good job decreases dramatically. The birth rate being low? That's because although the standard of living and the salary are high, it's still sometimes not enough to raise a child nor send them to schools. How about their elderly? Most suicides in the country is accounted for by the elders. They're left by their own family because majority of younger people believe it is not their duty to care for their parents. They live on the streets. Streets that are filled with microdust and are dangerous for the health. TL;DR The one on the video is how beautiful South Korea is and it definitely is. But ignoring how its people are actually struggling on their daily lives should also be shown.

It may sound strange to an outsider but spending more on education here is actually a bad thing for South Korean culture and economy: this money is spent largely on after school programs by hugely competitive parents, making kids work long hours so they can do better on their final exam and get into a better uni. The pressure is immense and means South Korea has a huge suicide problem among teenagers and young people. And less on home furnishings: this is not uprising since Korean homes are incredibly small for the most part, not to mention the fact that a lot of Koreans sleep on the floor without a bed.

I’m a bit confused on the country’s population statement, if the country has more younger people than older, along with a great education, how could that be detrimental to the country’s population in upcoming years? Or did he mean more older than younger?
@NickBell-i2g
@NickBell-i2g 6 жыл бұрын
At first, I was confused too. If you think about it though, it makes sense. Since there is more younger generation than older now combining with the fact that birth rate is the lowest, in 30 years, there will be more older generation and less younger generation to support the older generation in the way of paying taxes or replacing their jobs.

Well, there will be resistance against the South since the Norks were brainwashed for a really long time. But after a while, they will start to realize that everything their previous government told them was a lie and will accept to live in South Korean society. But even after having the whole peninsula unified under the ROK, that pesky Mainland China will demand a small piece of lands in the norther region of former North Korea to create a militarized zone as a buffer from the democratically unified Korea state to ensure the survival of CCP.

Asian women do not necessarily get double eyelid surgeries to look more “Western”, we do not envy or correlate everything desirable to Caucasians.. there are many other Asians with a natural double eyelid; ie. in Indonesia and India. Women with single eyelids get this procedure done to look more “awake”, fresh and to be able to experiment with eye shadow and eyeliners. I feel that the statement made in the video is overgeneralised and presumptuous, and am pretty tired of hearing it.
@lludd99

Afte spending 3 years in Malaysia and Indonesia and some the Philippines, I found out that was really true... most girls; not all, try to look more like Caucasians by trying to make their skin look lighter and trying to get a double eyelids and the most common that I noticed is a nose surgery to get a bigger nose. I don't think the majority of girls do it out of envy, I think they are held to western beauty standards, as far as I'm concerned, be yourself and don't change anything, but most girls would spend most of their lives and money in pursuit of unrealistic beauty standards which in my opinion is very stupid.

I know. I usually really liked Kpop until 2008. It was still popular during 2011~2012 but later that, entertainment industries did too much mass produce on similar stuffs with idols. Really, they lost the meaning of idol-ness already. Looks they already hit the climax recently and possibly decline like American pops in future. Funny thing is other countries cannot compete with Kpop so it will be successful for while. Country like Japan and China doing disastrous even they got resources but maybe we can expect other south eastern Asian countries rise in pop industry? Who knows?

Spending a lot of money on education does not mean people are better educated. Its just because its way more expensive, and that kids basically go to several different private schools because the society is so competitive. these people know nothing about S. Korea.

The way he pronounced the spice sauce wtf xd. Other than that, what he said is mostly true, especially with the issue with North Korea. No one is worried about North Korea, not even my grandparents who have survived the Korean War. We know that a war with North Korea is unlikely plus everyone there is so busy with work/school that they forget about NK most of the times. My 13 year old cousin in Korea does more work (in terms of education) than me, a full IB student in a foreign country which is crazy. Anyways, great video!

Again with the misrepresentation of plastic surgery in South Korea. 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️ About 25% of PS in South Korea are performed on foreigners. Also most PS occur in Seoul. Most South Koreans don’t get PS. Only about 2% of all South Koreans get plastic surgery. PS rate is very similar to the US, but US perform the most PS in absolute number in the world.

So what is in the mind of brazilians normal citizens easy= When corruption, viloence and impunity will end( and we still have a lot of problems with health and education)? Well there are some errors in the video. Income inequality is not low in Korea. Gini index prior to year 2016 faced public criticism for not being accurate, so they changed the way they pick samples. Current government statistic shows Gini index of Korea is over .4. and Research based on Government taxation database shows .45 to over .5. And nominal value of high wage does not represent quality of life in Korea 1) 25% of work force is self-employed, Thier average income is lower than employed. Government estimate shows one million self employed business has closed in 2018. They take significant part of population, But their income is not included in average wage. 2) Even Average wage of Korea is exaggerated as significant part of low wage workers (20- 25% of total employed workers) are excluded from statistics. Official average wage was calculated based on registration of national pension, where nearly 70% of those low wage workers are unregistered( technically they should but in practice they do not register). 3) High living expenses. According to the Economist consumer price in Seoul is even higher than NYC, 6th in the world including city states. And almost half of total population live within Seoul metropolitan area. Due to unaffordable housing, 75% of household wealth is bound to housing. ( for US and Japan
