Thank you 4 the (unauthorized) confirmation of what I am experiencing. I fell for the "bait and switch"! I was pissed at first, really pissed off. Then I used the software and it has some things that I like. Some things are counter intuitive, I agree, but all in all, it's not bad and way less buggy. Mostly I'm pissed at the dishonesty of the company and I don't think I'll ever feel "good" about them. They're like a crazy uncle that went a little too far in front of the wrong people. I may cut back over to Premier Pro just as a FY, next year. It's up in the air, & now I have to ponder the refund option! Kudos for the info. and keep on keepin' on!

Great video. I've just paid for Platinum 18 as I was previously using VMS Plat 16. I decided to stick with Movie Studio rather than go for Filmora as I wanted to stick with something I knew and understood. However, when I started the program, I thought 'what the hell is THIS?!' To be fair, I haven't started using it yet but I already feel very uncomfortable about it. Do I have a 14 day cooling off period to get my money back? I seems I do but I'm worried about the silence you talk about coming from Magix in Germany.

I thought, if there's equivalent of the old movie studio functionality in there, I could use it but man, where are all the frame/keyframe functions for a clip, how do i open vst effects ? Where are all the text animation functions ? It's all hidden in their new disney interface and you even have to show an audio track in the video clip. I think I'm going back to 17 lol

You can't buy it directly from Magix now, because it has been cancelled. If you can find a boxed version online, it will work. All older versions of Vegas Movie Studio will continue to work. I have all versions going back to version 13 installed and they still work! There is one bug in v17 that will probably not be fixed, because the program has been retired. Apple ProRes video will not open in v17, even though it should. Please remember that, if ProRes is something you use. Apple ProRes works 100% OK in Vegas Pro 18.

Activation codes should be identical to buying download from Magix. It doesn't matter how old it is, activation servers still work. Only last week I reactivated a version of VMS from 7 years ago. The shop you are buying from shouldn't be selling if it doesn't work.

Thank you for the details. I started editing video in Windows XP using Windows Movie Maker. That worked well but ultimately struggled with large (30+ minute) projects, even with standard def video on a well equipped PC. I decided that I was willing to pay money for a product that worked, so I ended up buying Sony Movie Studio Platinum version 12 and turning to your tutorials and forum for help. When Sony sold it to Magix, I suspected Sony knew the underlying code was outdated and not worth fixing. I stuck with Platinum, but was disappointed that Magix did not fix the stability and crashing problems. I suspect that Magix quickly learned what Sony knew: The underlying code was so lengthy and old that it was not efficient to keep selling it. I was having to save projects after every-single-edit because it was crashing so often. New versions of Platinum, new OSes, and new PCs did not help. The added features in Platinum were not great, and the stability was still poor. Like German automobile technology, the Magix product naming conventions were overly complicated. By version 16 of Platinum, I saw the writing on the wall and switched to Divinci Resolve. Resolve does many things differently and had a steep learning curve for me., but it is rock solid stable and offers frequent bug fixes. I am still willing to pay a modest price, around $200 USD, for a Windows video editing product that offers basic features and stability, but I could never find one. Resolve's free version does everything I need and more, so the price I paid was the time to learn it. Thank you for all of your tutorials for Platinum.

Another DaVinci comment...they keep coming in... The plan at Vegas Creative Software is to modernise everything, as far as I know. That's part of the reason why Vegas Movie Studio was cancelled, so they had more time and resources for Vegas Pro improvements and modernisation. VCS is very serious about making BIG improvements now.

I got Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum back in 2018, less than a month later 15 came out and I got an email from them for a free upgrade because I bought the older software, I used 15 platinum for a year or so and had various emails from them saying that Vegas was no longer apart of it, Magix bought the company and that for the last year or two I've been getting emails from Magix Movie Studio for various discounted upgrades, last week I got an email saying if I buy now I get Movie Studio Platinum 2022 plus the New Blue pack worth $1500, so I bought it, on my account I have 14 platinum and 15 platinum as well as 2022 platinum. I have no idea how to use them lmao I used Premier Pro for two years but got tired of spending $100 a month, back in the day I used to just use Windows Movie maker just to chop clips up and put them together. now I gotta learn how to use 2022 Platinum

Good job Derek, keep up the good work. As a long time Vegas Pro user, if they tried that with Vegas pro I would jump ship to another well known LNE. It already annoys me that I can’t upgrade to the latest version because my 3rd gen cpu is ‘too old’, but it still works fine in v14. Cheers.

I'm really pissed off about this. Not only did they do a bait and switch but there is no user manual attached to teach us how to use the new program. Magix is never going to hear from me again. i shall have to upgrade to Vegas Move Pro I guess or find another editing program altogether. Unbelievable.

This program is actually Magix Movie Edit Pro. If you search that program, you will find tutorials on KZbin from other users.

Substituting another product that has been rebranded for what I ordered as an upgrade to Version 17 is really a "bait and switch" tactic to ensure a flow of income to the software publisher. Yes, it is unethical. Yes, it is misrepresentation and dishonest. Yes, it is the publisher's easy way out of fixing a problem or having to update from 16-bit to 32-bit code. Magic has lost me as a long-time customer. And I will be quite open about my experience with the company and their products when asked for software recommendations.

I Wonder how long Magix are able to maintain the VegasPro version so therefore we left for Cyperlink Powerdirecktor it uses the native Windows Explorer and has a nice interface with many possibilities We bougt the Magix Video Pro and years back and got really disappointed the application has no support for 5.7 and 8K 360 video or support for Hardware acceleration (GPU render) the application uses its own explorer and looks like a mixture of Unix and Linux🤢

Vegas Creative Software is it's own division in the USA and they operate as an island, but of course Magix holds the money and has the last say. I can assure you that Vegas Pro is here to stay for many years, as long as it remains profitable and continues to grow. I genuinely feel very positive about the future of Vegas Pro. Great effort is being made right now, to make it more relevant and expand with new features that people will love.

It's not the new version. It is a completely different program with nothing to do with Vegas Movie Studio. The owners Magix have simply stolen the "Vegas Movie Studio" name, now that the program has been retired. With this new program, the Tracks work in reverse to Vegas. Text tracks go on the bottom, not the top.
