What is masking?

After masking subconsciously for 55 years, I found out what it was here on KZbin. I actually remember when I was 4 years old, deciding I shouldn't flap my hands because no one else did. I mark that as the time I started trying to fit in. I'd like to be myself now, but whenever there's another human present, I automatically go into survival mode. I don't feel safe because I wasn't most of my life.

I try to mask for politeness but not to change my personality. Sometimes I do find myself doing that though.
