I hope this is the "magic bullet" everyone claims Matter will be. Something tells me past devices won't be upgraded. Honestly, they don't owe us an upgrade for past devices and having to repurchase everything is very unappealing. Having my Nest products (cameras, CO2 Fire Detectors, etc.) work with HomeKit would be amazing, but then they couldn't sell us all new equipment.

There is so much hype over Matter, yet one would still need to buy multiple hubs just to get all the lights working (Xiaomi hub, Ikea hub, Philips hub, etc). One would also need all the different apps set up and then connceted to Google Home. What would really be a hit is if one could go to the store, buy a device (bulb, sensor, speaker), scan the QR code in Google Home and have that device working as intended. Is that happening any time soon?

The current iteration of Matter doesn't work with cameras iirc, but the next update to the standard supposedly will. And I'm hoping that Amazon-branded smart plugs will end up adopting this sort of standard, because I currently have a lot of Amazon plugs which currently do not work with Home Assistant. The same could also be said of Wyze, who seem to be avoiding Home Assistant like the plague. They stopped maintaining their RTSP firmware ages ago, and don't have an official integration for even their plugs, lights, and locks.

Not everyone can just set up a smart home. Hopefully matter smart devices will solve that problem 🙂

When we set up our new router in a few days I'll also reset my entire Google Home network. Will that be already on the matter standard as it is already publically released? It mostly consists of Google's own devices...

Will matter devices require an internet connection? Too many devices these days require them to phone home and have a cloud account etc. A completely local solution is all that I will have in my house. All of my devices are isolated from the internet with my firewall. If I need to do something remotely, I simply VPN in.

I don't want to buy another router device for Matter!! I do have a home server, wonder if it can be the Matter router ?

The current biggest problem to me is phones defaulting to the 5ghz frequency, and the devices you're trying to connect requires your phone to connect to the 2.4ghz frequency, ...which requires you to have the knowledge to separate the frequencies by going to the web portal of your router. I suppose Matter won't be able to help with connecting our current devices, or will it?

This is a WiFi setup problem not a smart home problem. When your phone is connected to 5 GHz it is connected to the network and can talk to anything on the wired or wireless network. Which will include all connected Matter devices. But telling a 2.4 GHz device to connect to a 5 GHz SSID and MAC address of the AP doesn't compute.

@@wkm001 So are you saying Matter won't be of any help in connecting old non matter devices, where the devices need your phone to be on the same wifi frequency as the device? I was hoping Matter could solve that irritating device set-up problem. My phone (Pixel 6) doesn't allow me to choose a selected frequency that I might need when setting up some wifi devices. At one time they had an app on the play store that would force your phone to connect to the frequency you wanted. I'm mentioning that to say, it seems possible that the Matter standard can incorporate the forcing of a certain frequency when you're setting up a new wifi device if that's what it takes to connect the device, ... That's what Matter is currently advertising about it's ability to make wifi connections and operability, and device connections easy and simple, ...right?

@@rond9554 I don't have any specifics about setting up a device that uses WiFi only. Matter is suppose to make it easier to control things across ecosystems, all of that is standardized now. But that assumes you are connected to the network layer though. Whether that is thread, WiFi, or Ethernet. I'm just not sure how each manufacturer will handle getting connected to WiFi or if Matter has a fix for this issue.

I don't know how my wifi does it. My 2.4ghz devices connect to the right bandwidth.

I'm actually surprised at how open Apple has been lately when it comes to playing with others. First they contributed to the Qi 2 wireless charging standard and now they are helping push for Matter. What's next? They add usb-c to their phones... Oh wait.

Matter is great for me as an iphone user with a nest hub and echo show. Right now I use a lightbulb that works with both of them. It would be better if I didnt have to worry about it.

I think it will. Especially for Echo devices that require you to either have an Echo device or to download the Alexa app to use. And for a variety of Nest compatible devices that aren't HomeKit compatible for iOS users.
