Omg amazing!! Do you have any idea of what you want to study within medical anthropology and sociology more specifically?
@andrewgonzales13592 жыл бұрын
I transferred back to the Midwest because of financial reasons but I then wrote a sixty page paper about public health policy at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, which won an award. My undergraduate thesis advisor received his PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan. I loved what I studied, particularly Farmer, and the introductory content which included Boaz. The BPS model was discussed by other organizations when I was at UCLA, and it is very important.

I just read a book called “The Plague” by the existential philosopher and Nobel prize winning author, Albert Camus, published in 1947. I’d never heard of medical anthropology until I started looking at you tube videos analyzing the book. Thank you for substantially increasing my knowledge of anthropology in general. BTW, I highly recommend the book, whether you’re a medical anthropologist or just a human that has lived through the most recent “plague” of the last few years.

Thank you for this video, seeing this in my feed made me so happy! In a previous comment, I had said I was planning on changing my major to medical anthropology and now I can say I have officially done so! 🥳 A book I recommend for anyone interested in medical anthropology and/or public health is the book Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. It is about the life of Paul Farmer, a medical anthropologist who recently passed, his founding of the non-profit org Partners in Health, and the amazing public health work he has done across the world. It introduced me to the field and made me passionate about working in public health!

hi Alivia...I am planning to go for anthropology undergrad in UK .But what stresses me is that I have seen some youtube videos and comments about no jobs after doing this course .So, if you could clarify and may be make a video about the probability of getting jobs in different sectors after doing this course. Appreciate your work and this calms me down a bit and keeps my hopes up!

Hi! I think it would be awesome to go for anthropology undergrad in the UK! And I get a ton of comments about this topic in particular so I've tried to make different videos about career options etc. However, I will try to produce more on probabilities and if I think anthropology is worth it! Thank you for this!

Do you think anthropology is a good major for a pre-med? I’m a senior in high school trying to decide what to major in😅 Great video by the way!!
@AliviaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I think an anthropology BS would be great! I do not recommend a BA because you would not have all the necessary prerequisites for medical school
@mitchellbuffington6558 Жыл бұрын
Pre med is a major in its own right. Anth is not considered competence for post grad med programs if you’re looking to be a doctor or something like that. Might want to look at a STEM major

Hey I know this isn’t directly about medical anthropology, but i’m still in highschool just about nearing graduation and i’ve just recently found out about anthropology and i’ve been reading a lot about bio anthropology specifically. I have been looking for exact answers on the internet on what classes I should be taking in highschool but can’t find any, so do you know what kind of classes I should be taking? I am in Canada so it could be different here I don’t know.
@AliviaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi! No worries at that! I think it is great that you are trying to get a head start in high school (I definitely didn't so it is cool to hear from people who do haha). I think generally, just be sure to take all required courses to graduate and apply to college (ie math, bio, etc.). Beyond that, there is definitely a lot of flexibility! The classes that helped me the most for anthropology from high school were history, english, and biology. Generally though, don't worry about it too much! Most anthropology majors when they get to college are starting from ground 0 :)

Honestly the best thing you could do at a high school level is 1) get good grades so you can get into a decent undergrad. 2) look at college/uni for their programs, concentrations, courses, faculty and their specialties. 3) don’t sweat it! Even in undergrad, one is learning and exploring about all subfields before considering specializing. Some programs in universities might not have a concentration or track at all. 4) *optional* Now…maybe an overkill, but if your HS has trades, maybe learn some dentistry? 5) **even more optional ** Book Rec: the human bone manual by White and Folkens; there might be a pdf out there. There’s also non-credited courses online like in futurelearn if you want a taste in Bioarch and Forensics.
