Hi, I've been doing a lot of research into damp walls which is affecting my recently purchased 1868 built cottage. I've discovered that houses built before 1910 would have been built with lime mortar and lime plaster. The lime helps the masonary breath and expel moisture. Covering the walls with plastic paint, gypsum or waterproof boards will prevent the moisture discharging and will eventually wreck the walls. Do you check for lime mortar/plaster before covering the wall?

Hi, Yes we do check if the buildings are lime built. We would all like to use lime and breathable products throughout on these buildings. The truth is over the last 21 years spent renovating houses 99.9% of these properties have been repointed and replastered or patched up using cement & gypsum they will almost always be covered in non breathable paints. and so we do our best to be sympathetic to the building but we also weigh up the work involved in undoing decades of material mis- use and of course ultimately the decision rests on customer budget and preference.

I think I’ve got this, but it’s on a side of the house which has no windows. How do I fix that?
@bonwrentaylor27436 ай бұрын
If the side of your house is exposed stone, brickwork or unpainted render, then apply a coat of Climashield or Stormdry Masonry protection Cream. It's a bit pricey but extremely effective and protects against penetrating damp for 20+ years !

How did you attach foil back board ?
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot Жыл бұрын
You typically use foam to stick them on
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot Жыл бұрын
If the wall is really really flat, you could use an adhesive like ct1 or sticks like shit

hi, can I put dampstop warlock paper ( foil ) onto a bay window which has recently had plastering done ( gypsum? or should I put that plaster board you mentioned instead
@SDRobertsPlastering6 ай бұрын
@@itsme_jenmedia I don't recommend insulated wallpaper products as a long term solution it's better to have a proper IWI system installed have a watch of this video where I show problems with using foil backed papers and sheets kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZjFkpyCm8RpmqMsi=44e-mIxmgBI7HObY

Can't dot and dab foil plasterboard
@Jackzuk Жыл бұрын
Fair doo, in the video there were hardly any screws in the board which made me think it was d&d’d… could of it have been foam?
@wr3099 Жыл бұрын
@@Jackzuk yeah you can foam on foil. In fact it's probably the only viable way. If you use screws you immediately negate the point of the foil. And if you use d&d - even if it sticks your whole wall is hanging off the foil application
@Jackzuk Жыл бұрын
@@wr3099 surely its also hanging off the foil with foam too, also on insulated plasterboard there is a vapour check bonded between the plasterboard and insulation and no issues there, u can dot and dab that….. another thing i cant really see the guys point of using foil back board because of penetrating damp, surely that is not a solution as it only masks the issue, and if it hiding it he could be rotting any joists in the wall or bricks start getting covered in mould
@wr3099 Жыл бұрын
@@Jackzuk yeah you're right with the foam to be fair. I can't recall properly maybe it was the adhesive wouldn't work on foil? Bit lost now... I think with insulated plasterboard they generally use those thin fixings with a massive head to support the board. Metal or plastic. And yeah you're right unless you fix the root cause of the damp problem these sort of solutions only mask the issue. It's like saying mould away back there just don't let me see it on the surface and all is dandy. You'll only see the damage when you decide to remove them or install a new socket or something
