I personally think it was a mistake to rebrand the 1st Puyo Puyo games as spinoff games of other franchises in the West. That effectively prevented potential Western fans of the series from generating enough hype for the series to take the Western world by storm, as it did with Japan.

My Mom who worked in Japan got this for me on my PS2 about 10 years ago. Don't know which version of Puyo Puyo it is since it was written in Japanese but it was a huge part of my childhood along with Klonoa 2. That being said, I never knew Klonoa 2's title until I rediscovered it last year since everything was in Japanese. I used to always not mention it since I didn't know what the game was called even though I loved it so much.

Nice video! I just expected you to mention that Puyo Puyo wasn't idealized from scratch as a puzzle game, but was actually a spin-off of a Japan-exclusive RPG series called Madou Monogatari, where puyos were one of the creatures you could find.

I do wish Compile still made them. Best songs, characters and concepts. It's certainly more unique looking on the Sonic Team side of things, but that's not what I'm talking about. The story and more is what made me love them, especially being able to play the next Madou Monogatari game after each Puyo Puyo and seeing what assets they'd use next. The Compile games still sold more, too. Which makes me question how they ever went bankrupt.

You know what the Puyo Puyo franchise could've done (and probably still could do) as far as marketing outside of Japan is concerned? More cameos in other SEGA games, including Sonic All-Stars, and heck, even Super Smash Bros. In fact, I think the Western rebranding of the 1st few Puyo Puyo games as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche was a poor move in the long-term, as that created confusion as to whether or not those games had a common identity (unless you happened to have played both of them, which is unlikely), effectively preventing the Puyo Puyo franchise from taking the Western world by storm, just as it did within Japan.

Puyo Puyo 2 on the Neo Geo Pocket Color was localized in the west as Puyo Pop. There's also Puyo Pop on the N-Gage. Puyo Puyo on the Game Gear was localized as Puzlow Kids but never released.

Well it wasn't released in the west as anything other than spinoffs for other franchises (Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Kirby's Avalanche, etc.) for a loooooong time, so it didn't have any time to catch on. Tetris actually caught on pretty well, so I don't think it has to do with being a Puzzle game.

To me, the first Puyo-like game I saw was back in 1997-8 or so with an indie PC game called (I think) "Critmass". At the time, the only game I could compare it to was Dr.Mario but it was much more dynamic and faster paced (even the timed demo supported up to 4 players with decent AI levels), even ignoring the special tiles.

I live in China, and several years ago I used to play a game that is similar to puyopuyo online for a while. I think the game is pretty close to puyopuyo in the rule, except one key difference: you send colored blocks rather than colorless blocks to your opponent. (But I think those blocks are more similar to the germs in Dr Mario that, unlike the block you drop, you have to drop new block onto it in order to "ignite" it.) And you can choose different "attack pattern" that, I kinda forgot what they do besides deciding the block pattern you send to your opponent. There's even an "all-red" pattern that makes all the block you send red, super risky but there's some neat effect. I forgot what effect it has, but if I remembered correctly it would make you send way more blocks than usual, which is useful if you are good at setting up long chains that can blow your opponent in one shot, I guess? If that's the case it would be more like "all or nothing" kind of deal XD Not sure if that game is still online though, but, the chance is still high, I guess? I haven't played competitive puzzle games for years.
