What Is Really Taking So Long with The Winds of Winter?

George R. R. Martin has always been known for being a slow writer, but it's been 12 years and people are wondering why Winds of Winter is taking so long.
During this time, he hasn't been sitting idle though. He worked as an executive producer for the most of the Game of Thrones’ TV show, wrote gigantic books about the world of Westeros, involved other books and contributed to various projects like Elden Ring.
So, instead of working on other projects why he doesn’t finish his magnum opus that made him super famous and turned him into one of the greatest authors of our time? Is he just not interested in the series anymore or has he hit a dead-end and can't figure out how to continue? Or maybe he's too busy with enjoying his fortune and having a good time?
Let's take a closer look.

@@nicolasclermont893 they definitely didn't make it up, not sure if it's true but it's one of the main theories that was being thrown around a few months back when everyone thought winds would be announced at worldcon this year. The main argument is essentially that he said he wasn't sure if winds or fire and blood would be released first but it was possible both would come out in 2018, after that he basically went radio silent on winds until the covid lock downs. If you assume that the 6 years dance took was his writing speed for winds too he should have finished around then but it's possible he was rushing to keep up with the show resulting in subpar work that needed to be extensively rewritten resulting in further delays. Potentially around that time he came to the conclusion that most of what he had was unsalvageable and he decided to start over again in 2018 meaning the 6 year count would start again and he could potentially be finishing the rewritten version soon.

As a gardener I hate this analogy. Every garden is planned, framed by borders stones, trellises, water fountains and of course the perennials. Where do you plant or transplant is super important to any successful garden and is done with forethought. Also gardeners have to trim and maintain the visual beauty of the garden. They don't plant flowers and see what grows, that's not how it works.

He planned where he would plant the garden, as in like what the overall story is about. And he still tends to the garden, and dorsnt let it grow too out of control (or he tries to at least) but he doesn't plan how the branches will grow or how large the flowers or crops are. Those grow naturally and however they were meant to grow. That's what he means by writing like a gardner. Hr doesnt plan out apl of the characters and exactly what they will do and exactly what will happen in the story. He lets the story tell itself. He lets his characters grow naturally. Its just an analogy, not supposed to be taken super seriously like yall are doing

My theory is that he has finished the winds of winter....sort of. He probably finish the manuscripts of the winds of winter, but like he kind of said in a recent pannel: he wishes he would have wrote the whole story first before publishing it. My theory is that he has finished Winds and its actually working on a Dream of spring, but is not saying anything because he wants the possibility that if something is not working in Dream, he could go back to Winds, at least (because he cant rewrite details of the other books) and correct whatever needs correcting. This would make sense based on some stuff he has said, and the fact that he said years before that he was 75% done also, but maybe now he is 75% done as in the whole finale (Winds+Dream). The reason why he is not saying anything, I would guess, is because if he did, people would rise in torches and march to his house and force him to publish Winds, wich would denny him the ability to edit stuff as he is writing Dream. So he probably prefers to wait till both books are finished and then publish them one by one.

Those books are easy because all he's doing is just retelling his lore. And sometimes you just know what to write on certain projects, that's how inspiration works, it comes and goes. Look 13 years is a crazy for not finishing a book, there's no denying that. But when I see comments like yours, it's so obvious that people are not writers. Writing is hard. Even fast writers like Brandon Sanderson and Stephen King understand what GRRM is going through. I'm about to watch this to see if I get my own opinion confirmed, but I am certain the answer is George Martin simply can't finish it in a sensible manner. He started way too many intertwined plot lines and has no way to conclude them. What's worse, he himself stated that he killed off one of the characters he now considers essential, plus he said he wishes he had money BEFORE he started writing ASOIAF so he could release it whole after it was finished (obviously, to make corrections to previous books as he wrote the next). George Martin simply wrote himself into a dead end. I gave up hopes for A Dream of Spring a few years ago, but I was still kind of sure we will get the Winds of Winter eventually. I am slowly changing my mind though. We will probably get neither.

He spends a lot of his time working on the tv shows (waste of time, they all suck), he travels a lot for conventions, he has been depressed a lot lately, and most important-his world is unbelievably complex with hundreds of decently fleshed-out characters, many with their own intersecting and diverging plans, and trying to figure out all of these threads and bring them to a satisfying conclusion while making the characters’ actions and the decisions of huge international powers feel authentic is really difficult and complicated.

@@Cypher-zu1yz It's actually a really dumb theory. The show's ending was hated because it was extremely rushed. If the books take their time to develop these plot points so it makes sense in the end, people won't mind. If anyone actually believed the book ending would be as bad as the show, the why would anyone ask for the books to be finished. Everyone knows that while some elements will be the same, it will still be overall a very different execution.

Guys... he isn't writing it. *There is no manuscript.* And no, I don't mean he's merely procrastinating... I mean he (a) has not been writing it; (b) has no plan to write it; (c) has accepted he isn't finishing it, and is lying about writing it... "Just a little longer folks..." This is extremely obvious when you think about it: George was a poor writer nearly his entire life. He is now 76 years old and is very rich. Life is precious and there's no guarantee you will live another day at that age. Ask yourself: If you were in this situation, would _you_ want to spend your remaining days locked away writing a very long, very complicated book series? No. You would be spending your money, going on vacations, attending conventions, having fun... Which is exactly what he has been doing. Moreover, this is a beast of a book. This isn't a quick write. This is something he would have to spend a significant portion of his remaining lifespan working on. He knows this, and it's part of why he's not doing it. More to the point, the last book will never get finished. He knows this too. This makes it even less likely he will work on WoW. Why would he, when the series will go unfinished anyway? Who cares if it's 5/7 done or 6/7 done? It's unfinished. Might as well give up -- which is what he did a few years ago. He's not an example of perfect health. Sorry, George. The more time goes by, the less people will be interested in reading it anyway. The ending of the show series was received poorly too, which definitely puts a lot of pressure on him and potentially adds a lot of work to do revising. So why would he lie and say he's working on it, rather than just come clean and say he's given up? A lot of reasons, but two big ones: (a) He would get sued. No question about it, this is absolutely certain. He has contracts with multiple publishers that _require_ him to write these books. The publishers are expecting to make a fortune from this, and if he breaches the contract by not writing, they will come after his money to make up their losses -- and he has a lot of money. Just because he does not have a _deadline_ that he is contractually obligated to follow, that doesn't mean he is completely free to do whatever. He is a party to a contract -- lots of contracts, actually. (b) He doesn't want lots of people to be mad at him. I seriously think this is so obvious I don't know how anyone who thinks about this for more than a few minutes could reach any other conclusion. He is not writing Winds of Winter, nor has he been. He gave up years ago. (And also, he's been making some pretty suspect statements in the last couple years, like "Who cares if a series isn't finished? Lots of great series go unfinished" .... lol. This is a completely different tune than when he was previously giving people the finger for daring to question if he would croak before finishing it. George has given up.)

I don’t think that he’s lying, but I do think him hinting at the doubt he was feeling about finishing it was telling. Like he even acknowledged in November that there may be chance that he won’t finish Winds of Winter, but he isn’t dead yet so he’ll keep moving forward.

Nah this would destroy his legacy after his death and as someone who is very into history and write his own he knows that all that remains of us when we die is our legacy. George R.R. Martin isn't "one of the greatest fantasy authors of all time" He's an accomplished author, don't get me wrong. But to be one of the greatest, you actually have to finish your Magnum Opus. You see, there is a social contract between the storyteller and the audience. The storytellers job is to tell a story from beginning to end while the listener/reader agrees to listen or read. When the storyteller however gives up in that duty and only tells half complete stories then they're not exactly one of the greats. Like it or not, GRRM's legacy will be merely another warning about: time management, not letting fear stifle creativity, and actually completing your Magnum Opus.

He’s not worried about how the show laid a dumb for the last 3 seasons of thrones… but the real reason is he’s a hack that will NEVER finish because garden writing (at least his process) is NOT how u write books. You can’t start a story with a 5 year gap in mind and then decide to essentially write those 5 years. He just kicked the can downwards with Feast and Dance by writing a bunch more plot lines for him to sort… it’s not garden writing, it’s JUNGLE writing -completely overgrown and out of control. The main issue though is three of his most major plot lines aren’t fleshed out AT ALL, and I’m starting to think he just has “explain later” written underneath him… 1) 3 Eyed Crow- I don’t think he has any idea of how he wants to write bran as how do handle a POV character who knows everything. The show didn’t know how it worked cuz Martin didnt know 2) Euron’s Cthulhu Apocalypse- it’s like the South Park Episode- Euron’s going to do all this mega epic stuff and wake the drowned god and steal a dragon. 3) MOST IMPORTANT- THE OTHERS- do you honestly think he has any actual idea about who and what the Others are or what their motives or ideas are. He says they are “a different kind of life” aka “I dunno I’ll think of something later.” It’s garbage… garbage that I love but it’s impossible to finish so I just get mad about it now.

Here’s the truth: He finished the books, probably all of them by this point. He won’t release any of them until after his death, since his original plan for the ending was fairly close to the main ideas represented (and hated) in the TV adaptation. He knows no matter how he ends it, unless he’s dead, people will hate it. Edit: However, if he's dead, he gets the post-posthumous effect of people respecting it for what it is instead of criticizing him.

He can live easily 5-10 years more. Are you telling me that his master plan is keep us waiting for winds of winter 20 years and we’re going to forgive the bad writing? Could make sense if he was way older, but man… I hope he’s not so dumb

@@DraizerPE To be fair, I think Daenerys Targaryen going mad is only fitting. I don’t like how it was executed in the show, but that idea alone shouldn’t constitute it as bad writing.

@@daniel4412 in the series there are some ideas (like daenerys going crazy) that are ok, even interesting, but poorly executed. But most of them are just a completly mess and make zero sense with the books. The characters lost their personality in the dialogues or even their skills/intelligence in key situations. I’m sure martin has way better ideas, and more consistent with the story obviously. But that’s not enough, he had +10 years to finish, and I’m not even asking for the end, I’m asking for the book that sets the context for the end. Imo he’s just lazy af and intimidated with the situation, but he has to understand that his legacy as a writer depends on this.

@@DraizerPE I agree, and think what I said will stem from his intimidation. If you want something you do to go down as legendary, you're get far more praise if you're dead before it comes out. I bet he keeps her going crazy and everything else changes. He’s lazy and intimidated, no matter what (unless he’s dead when they release), he’ll get mass criticism, most of which probably unfair.

He's suffering the Thomas Harris Effect on a much larger scale. Thomas Harris caught lightning in a bottle with The Silence of the Lambs, and he knew it. When he came out with the next one, Hannibal, it was apparent he couldn't capture the lightning again. People complained that Clarice Starling had been given a lobotomy and Hannibal had been turned into a yuppie. Likewise, there was an early biography of Ronald Reagan that came out that had such high expectations placed on it the the author finally decided it would please no one so he went with a highly idiosyncratic work that pleased no one but himself. This is the fate George RR is trying to avoid by might and main.
