I don't mean to disrespect any counselors out there, but I've really had trouble seeing the point of the counselor field when an LCSW can do all of the same tasks and more. Not to mention the representative bodies are better organized and there are programs in place that allow people pursuing a career in social work to get there master's in social work sooner through advanced standing. Dr. McGowan, could you possibly elaborate on why counseling exists given it is completely doable as a social worker?

It depends on what you mean by health care. Many social workers work as clinical counselors and therapists, and others work in hospital or health care settings advocating for and coordinating care for patients. Social workers are more focused on mental health and social issues surrounding healthcare rather that on providing care for individuals' physical health.
