Here's an African perspective (by the way this is a very good video). The main difference I see with the two Super Leagues is that Europe's version was all to make more money while the African version is to invest into developing the content in a footballing perspective. The reality is that when we watch European football there is a big difference in quality of everything because in Africa we do have some good clubs but generally the quality isn't the same, hence why we love football but don't watch many local games because all of Africa's best players are all playing in Europe. I'd support the Super League in Africa on condition that it benefits all teams and other smaller teams will be able to participate and get a slice of the pie, but due to greediness I don't think that will happen

Wow! I had no idea that the African Super League was even a thing. I. Kenyan and I appreciate the analysis. I will now have my eyes open and see how the idea develops. While you have ably brought out the likely downfalls, greed and all, I think the risk is worth it, because local sport is very poorly funded, clubs struggle to stay above water and it is almost taboo to support local clubs compared to the Premier League or other top five leagues. We don't have that many stadiums to speak of. So the extra money would definitely be useful. Then again, there will be the added danger of increased corruption with the new revenue streams. But on the whole, the continent needs the extra exposure and funding, if only for the sport to grow and unearth the next Wanyamas, Salahs and Koulibalys.

Europeans often neglect how tough having relegation is when the sport and its fans are in infancy. It works so well in Europe because there is a deep history of clubs as well as a large and successful 2nd (and more) leagues. The issue is outside of Europe, these fan bases do not exist. There isnt depth. To build fan bases, sell tickets to games and actually have anyone care you cant just throw teams in and out. Relegation is a goal. But you cannot just start big tournaments in underdeveloped areas with relegation. It will fail.

As a Zamalek fan from Egypt I’m all for this. The European clubs have so much more money than our clubs that players are leaving Africa as kids to go to play in countries like Switzerland and Belgium. African clubs and our fans deserve better than this, and I don’t want to see our African game die for the feeding of Europe. The European super cup was all money the African super league is still all about money but it would hopefully reignite African football, and invest in our game rather than all of our game be in service of Europe even our fans rooting for European clubs.

I do not agree with you because if African players go to play in Europe it is because in Africa they do not invest in football and it is not a sport watched as in Europe, so the players to be able to earn more money and improve (in fact we have better sports centers) go to Europe. It is not that we steal them from you, rather we do you a favor by growing your players who will one day play for the national team. Contrary to what you say I think that it no longer makes sense to have an African Cup every two years because football is growing in Africa and competing during the European national championships is a great lack of respect for all the European teams that invest in African footballers. Africa and Asia are huge continents in comparison to Europe, so I'd say it's better to organise their champions League competitions in regional basis and only those who qualify for the final stages of the competition have to make those extensive journeys from north to south or east to west. Would be the best solution possible, would keep it real sportive and available for everyone.

what if the African Super League was split into 4 regional leagues(north, south, east and west), each 14 teams. At the end of the season the top four teams play a champions league playoff. Then 16 teams are split into 4 groups of 4 and each group game is one leg. And after that it just progresses like a normal knockout tournament. The 6 teams below the top 4 in each regional league could do the same and then the bottom 4 from each regional league. The champions league and confederation cup would be scrapped and domestic leagues would continue, except the top teams are promoted into the African Super Leagues.

With one leg in each group the top and bottom teams would play a maximum of 38 matches while the middle teams would play a maximum of 40 matches. Two legs in the groups would only add 3 extra games, and with no champions league or qualifiers; teams would still be playing a reasonable amount of games.

I think Africa is too big for a single league, but I agree that many of the continent’s leagues are too small to be profitable. I think the solution is a middle ground: regional leagues. For me, having 4-5 regional African leagues might be the right size, plus it would still allow for an African champions league. The best split would probably be a North African league, a west African one, Southern Africa, East Africa, and a potential 5th for Central Africa (tho I think it’s quite reasonable to split central Africa between east, west, and south)

-In my opinion, CAF Super League (CAF SuperL) should run parallel to current CAF Champions League (CAF ChampL). The CAF SuperL should be divided into 2 regions of North and South of 10 (or more) clubs each. And after round robin in each region league, top 4 should advanced to knockout rounds to get the CAF SuperL champion of the season. -The CAF SuperL should be treated as the top league in CAF ChampL just like the Top 4 leagues in UEFA currently: English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A, albeit with more automatic slot. Top 4 clubs of each regional league in CAF SuperL should get CAF ChampL Group Stage slot, while middle 4 clubs get a playoff slot, and bottom 2 clubs will not get any slot. This should discourage any clubs to get free slot to CAF ChampL even with the dismal result in CAF SuperL. -And CAF ChampL itself also should be revamped. The North and South division should be created just as current AFC CL with their West and East division, to reduce travel cost (Africa is huge). Each division's group stage should have 12 teams (more is preferable): 4 clubs from SuperL, 4 clubs from automatic slot and 4 clubs from playoff. -For the 4 automatic slots, let's fix the CAF 5 Year-Ranking. To ensure fairness, the points of the individual clubs participated in SuperL should not contribute to each of their respective association. Which means the points of Moroccan league association (FRMF) should minus points of e.g. Raja Casablanca participation points in 5 year calculation if Raja Casablanca have joined SuperL. After the calculation, top 4 association in each North/South regions can have 1 automatic slot to ChampL Group Stage. -And let's also talk about CAF Confederation Cup (equivalent to Europe League). The current CAF ConC structure also not helping with less prize money but with the same travel cost as CAF ChampL. Let's use the 5 regional federations (UNAF, WAFU-UFOA, UNIFFAC, CECAFA & COSAFA) to held their own group stage and crown their regional champion. And the 5 champions will advanced to next knockout rounds to crown CAF ConC champion. This should further lessen the travel cost and each country in their regions can have more slot based on CAF 5 Year-Ranking and the size of group stage (the more number of groups, the more slot each country can have). The slots also based on the participation of teams which dropped from ChampL playoff.

I think it's better if CAF just improves CAF Champions League, Confederations Cup & Super Cup than introduce a new tournament. AFCON every two years is fine but maybe every three years could be less hassle. Here in South Africa, CAF Champions League isn't that popular. All we know is two clubs have won it. In the short term this sounds like a great idea, more sponsorship and viewership but it would affect players heavily. With fixtures being played almost every season (even during the summer) and everyday a new tournament pops up there would be a dire effect on footballers. Also CAF and FIFA are both organizations with history of corruption so I don't think either of these organizations have African footballs best interest at mind. It is an interesting idea but I do not think that it can be a reality for now until we know how the tournament will function and how it affects other tournaments.

They're thinking about splitting it to 3 regions. each region will have it's own league and then the qualified teams from all the groups play against each other in the play-offs. It might sound reasonable but it's really stupid and not fair, the North African region has most of the best teams in Africa and they mostly dominate. It's not fair that we play against each other in the group stage while other teams TP Mazembe or Sundowns will have it so easy to the finals.

Africa is so big the logistic will be a nightmare, but I believe we can do it in four clusters North Africa, west Africa, east Africa and south Africa each cluster can have ten teams by end of the season the champions from each cluster play against each other in one country in that case logistic, different seasons transportation will not be a big issue

The detailed concept of a super league is flawed and fishy, but unfortunately we don't have the fine details for this African super League. If Africa is going ahead with this plan they should divide up the continent like they’ve done with the nba, East and West instead it would be South and North as travel times would be greatly decreased. As a South African, I really wish to abandon my home team Orlando Pirates and start supporting Al Ahly. I just want to support winners. But I can't support them if there is no relationship built, as they are way up north, going against teams I know little about, and aren't familiar with. So I can't support them. But with a superleague, I can compare them side to side with tes I do know like Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaiser Chiefs. Which means I can see them beat my teams, or I can see my teams beat them, which would be extra cool.

IF the league is commercially viable then the funding issue is not really a problem. There is no shortage of investors that would gladly put their money into the project, if it is commercially worthwhile. Dangote for example has been obsessed with buying a football club for at least 10 years, while he is mostly associated with Arsenal, he has gone on record saying that it doesn't HAVE to be Arsenal.

I hate the idea. This is just going to kill off all the little guys who aren't a top 2 team in their competitive local leagues or the stronger teams from small countries and discourage diverse investment cause it gives a monopoly to already rich clubs. Teams that would be 3rd place from any top 10 league are getting ripped off and if its split into conferences then North Africa would be most competitive and some of the best teams would be getting eliminated right away since Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt are all top 5 leagues. Then you have leagues like Congo who is also top 5 and newer guys like South Africa, Tanzania and Angola beginning to get stronger but taking the top teams from those local leagues will just make them worse. They should keep the Champions League as is and promote it more.

The FiFA president mentioned something regarding Africans crossing over the Mediterranean for a better life in Europe as part of the reason for the super league. Could it be that this is a political strategy as a way to reduce the number of African players in the European clubs???🤔🤔🤔

Don't be stupid. As someone that follows African leagues and the African international competitions this wouldnt work. Some teams have tons of troubles to play a simple champions league game due to scheduling. If anything Africa should divide itself in 2 or 4 different regions and play 2/4 different champions league. It would be much better for travel and would promote more teams to international champions. The winners could then play a small African Super Cup for an absolute champion. Most big stadiums made recently for international events are already in such a bad condition it's not even funny, I've seen much older not to date stadiums in much better care. Africa has potential but it takes time, decades worth of time. A super league would be a horrible thing.

I disagree as a Raja Casablanca supporter , it's better to play our local leagues and get qualified for Champions league or CAF cup as usual. Against Modern Football.

Exactly, it would be a shame to only put Raja and Wydad in the league when Morocco has other competitive teams like RS Berkane. I'm Congolese and I think it's a horrible idea to only put TP Mazembe and AS Vita in the league when other top teams like St Eloi Lupopo are investing for a continental spot too.

They should just do a super league and then a bunch of lower feeder leagues. Build the same structure as the FA but in all of Africa. Maybe that’s a bit too large of a project I’m no expert on African footy

I think the thing is that ,Afrika is way to big to create a single competition, Like in Caf not all countries participate , So maybe if Afrika can be split into two , create a North Caf and South Caf .... Now for the super league , Also for African Super league do the same but everyone has to qualify ...It might work🤞🤞👀

Personally, I do think it a good idea for the big clubs. But for some countries and leagues it wouldn't be fair for example the algerian league because it is still the 4th best league in Africa but hasn't the same clubs qualifying for the African competition. The most important question is who's gonna participate to this African super league?

Football fans don't want a superleague in Europe because thats the league they've been watching their whole lives. Tho they distantly still want to experience how a super league could work, the best place for that is Africa. More than 50% of african continent pop don't even watch 45' of soccer in they own countries. So most Africans are not invested in football from africa. So whether that new league is a success or not, It happened cos most people want to see how it could work

This will only benefit the very rich who want to control the football on the continent and have a monopoly for everything related. Its better to invest in local leagues and infrastructure without the super league. The owners of the superleague stand to gain from this not the locals who will be set back from their own regional soccer development

Africa and asia/ofc should have super leagues. Would bring big funding for these country's football. I think concacaf clubs should join the Copa liberdores
