What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?

The Bible turns out to use this term to mean something very different than what I was originally taught. The "baptism of the Spirit" is not a secondary experience that Christians have after salvation, it is something that happens to everyone who is saved, when they believe.
This is just one question from a long interview I did for the moderators of the r/Bible subreddit. They asked their subreddit to send me a bunch of questions and I spent a lot of time preparing so that I would be able to offer the best answers I could. I'll be posting these answers as individual videos so keep an eye out for the rest in the set.
I'm Mike Winger and my goal is to help you learn to think biblically about everything!
I go live every Monday and Friday at 1pm. Monday is usually a vs by vs teaching and Friday is a live Q&A where I take questions from the live chat on YT.

Actually I found a direct contradiction to your view in the Bible, and I don’t think you can explain it away: Acts 8:14-17 says “Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost” (Acts 8:14 -17 KJV) Pastor Mike, or anyone else in the comment section, how do you explain this?
@MikeWinger

This may seem like a short answer because it depends on a larger understanding I have of the function of the apostles in the beginning of the new covenant. I think this passage has everything to do with apostolic authority and isn’t about a second experience with the Spirit other than indwelling. The people in Samaria have heard the message second hand but not from official apostles. The reason they haven’t been indwelt by the Spirit yet is to ensure that apostolic teaching is the authoritative teaching of the body of Christ. Much should be said about this but it’s the reason we end up with our New Testament instead of an endless debate over what we are supposed to hold to. So, my answer is that these Samaritans are experiencing the indwelling of the Spirit for the first time, which has been delayed so that the authority of apostolic teaching would ensure the true gospel is believed by them and later generations.

And yet, in Acts 10:44-48, it says, "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days." An event occurred between Acts 8:14-17, and Acts 10:44-48, that may have something to do with why there is a difference in the way the Holy Ghost was received. It is in Acts 10:9-43, that Peter receives a vision and goes to preach to Gentiles. As Peter explains in Acts 11:15, "And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning." (That is, at Pentecost in Acts 2:2-4). In Acts 8 the people converting are Jews/Hebrews/Israelites of Samaria, not Gentiles. And it is Philip who is doing the preaching in Acts 8:5-7. Then later Peter and John were sent to them. The people in Acts 10:44-45, are Gentiles. So, it would appear to me that Gentiles can be saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit at the same time, because it is God who has the authority to baptize in the Holy Ghost regardless of customs.

@@LAURIE_atheart What does a changed life have to do with the gospel. First, lets look at the gospel. First Corinthians 15:1-4. That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. It is believing that gospel that Jesus died for our sins to pay our sin debt to God so we are saved from hell. We all deserve to go to hell. Romans 3:23. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:9-10. There is none righteous, no not one. So, God hates our sin, but He loves us sinners. John 3:16. For God so loved the world, First John 2:2, that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, that WHOSOEVER, anyone, believeth in Him, should not perish, but HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE. Romans 1:16. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to EVERYONE THAT BELIEVETH, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Galatians 1:6-9. Though we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that we have preached unto you, LET HIM BE ACCURSED. As we said before, so say I again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received from us, LET HIM BE ACCURSED. IF we could be saved by what we do or do not do, then why did Jesus have to die such a horrible death? It is the only way we could be saved. He took the punishment for ours sin debt, so we could never be condemned again. John 3:18. The simplicity of the gospel. Acts 16:31. The Philippian Jailor, asked Paul, what must I do to be saved? Paul gave him the simple answer. BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AN THOUGH SHALT BE SAVED AND THY HOUSE. The simple answer is also given in John 6:47. Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. First John 5:13. These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God, THAT YE MAY KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. Ephesians 2:13-14. For by grace ye are saved, (what Jesus did for us) through faith, (we believe He did it to save us) and that not of yourselves, (we did nothing for it) IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD, NOT OF WORKS, (nothing we do can save us) lest any man should boast. You cannot boast in a free gift. First Corinthians 9:15. Thanks be to God for His UNSPEAKABLE GIFT, ETERNAL LIFE. Once you have it you cannot lose it because it is ETERNAL LIFE. John 10:28-29. No one can pluck us from His hand.

When I first got saved I was attending a Pentecostal church. I was baptized there. At some point I went to the altar to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. At some point a guy came up and grab me from behind in a bear hug and pick me up off the ground and started squeezing me insisting that I speak in tongues to prove that I had received the Holy Spirit. After a minute I started jabbering just so he would let me go. Long story short I go to a different church now.

I remember when I was born again and this was straight after I was baptized. When I came out of the water I felt a waterfall of love flowing through my body coming from above and it was the most unbelievable experience of my life. I tell people it was like a mothers love for a baby times a million. That's my way of explaining. You can't really explain it unless it happens to you. I remember walking outside and everything looked different and soo much clearer. I remember looking at the bark of a tree and the birds flying by and i was absolutely amazed at their beauty and started talking to GOD how did he create such things, and i had looked at the bark of a tree many times as a logger. I was a drug addict, smoker, drinker and gang affiliate before baptism and I had been doing these things for 20 years and I could never quit but it was like I had never smoked anything in my life. I had no desire to smoke or do drugs and that was impossible but now I know it had to have been the born again process I guess you would call it. Just about every Christian that saw me the next day said there was a unexplainable glow over me and it was mentioned by some that I was overflowing with the spirit. My wife, well girlfriend at the time was not a believer and she said she saw a light come through the ceiling when I came out of the water and it shone on me. I'm no super Christian by any means but since that day I have seen the LORD baptise people with the spirit before water baptism and after baptism and sometimes years later. When you think you have him figured out he throws a spanner in the works. His ways are higher than ours and we can never know how he works. The house of Cornelius were baptized as Peter spoke and others through laying on of hands. This is a difficult subject to preach on to be honest.

Wow...I had the same experience/feeling...it's hard to describe but you described it well...only my spiritual experience like this was when I had exactly 8mths sober&clean! And this was before I ever got baptized by water...I was at what they called an AA Back to Basics gathering that lasted a good part of the day...doing the 12 steps in one day like they did in the earliest days of AA.... It's a very long testimony of what happened to me and what I experienced with ALL "3"of them there...Father God,The Holy Spirit& Jesus Christ! I'd talk about it when I lead meetings.....I was "somewhere else" for one thing... felt the feeling your describing and I didn't want to come back,I didn't want the feeling to stop..wow...never have been able to actually really figure out what actually happened but it happened and was life changing....this was 17 years ago...April 9,2005... everything looked more beautiful..all the most wonderful feelings rolled into one that you'd ever want to feel...pure peace,love,beauty,joy,warmth,contentment☺️ 🙌☺️...and I was told things by them....the only thing I can compare it to now is when I'm in Jesus' presence..but it was more intense&lasted longer....one thing Father Yah told me was "All Will be Revealed"...well...it sure is! As a Pentecostal preacher's kid, I struggled with this all my life. Until at age 56 it happened for me, at home alone, worshiping at the piano. I finally received my prayer language and had an experience with God that night that I can't explain. Prayer language? Experience with God? I doubt it. You probably just had a brief emotional high. The Bible says nothing about prayer languages (though it does give much instruction on prayer). We do not have visions and extrabiblical revelations today, but do have the inspired, preserved Word of God. Base your faith upon Christ and His Word, not some random emotionalistic experience that can be created/manipulated by the flesh and Satan.

Short testimony: My father is a baptist, my mother identifies as pentecostal. They both strongly believe, their marriage was initiated by God in the first place. My mothers father used to be a home church pastor, they had experienced a lot of signs and wonders at home (supernatural protection, provision and deliverence in their own home and stuff like that, I still love to hear those testimonies from my mother). My grandfather used to question the salvation of my father very harshly because my father didn't pray and speak in tounges. Later, my grandfather got caught in adultery, his marriage broke into pieces. He used to have a very quick temper and has not been repentant at all all those years unfortunately... My father got offended so heavily that he refused to go to a pentacostal church from that point on. God spoke to my mother to humble herself under the spiritual leadership of my father although it was obviously flawed due to the offense my father had towards my grandfather. In the baptist Church they went to from that time on, they told my mother to "repent" from her "false" practice of her beliefs so that they could accept her into fellowship. My mother refused for she had a deep revelation about the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Other leaders told her to leave that surrounding and look for a place where she could get proper spiritual teaching (to be honest, the baptist Church very successfully avoided every topic concerning the Holy Spirit). So, I didn't really get this whole thing until I was in my teens. When I started to wonder why my mother had such authority in prayer and in what she spoke... Usually, I wouldn't hear her pray in tounges at all in family prayer times. And after I got saved in that baptist Church, I started to hunger for more revelation about the power of God and his supernatural nature - I wanted the power in prayer that I witnessed my mother had. I started to notice that my father didn't pray and live in too much power of God, to be honest. But also, I recognized that it was the humility and the spiritual support of my mother that kept their marriage going. All of my six siblings later left that baptist Church and almost all of us ended up in a pentecostal Church. Finally, God moved the heart of my father to leave that religious Church as well to help my mother get in a spiritual healthy surrounding. Still, my father isn't too open about the gifts of the Spirit, they both visit an evangelical Church and they minister together through music. It is still the prayers of my mother (and her praying a loooot in tounges/in the Spirit) that keeps my family running. I myself got baptized in the Spirit half a year after getting born again and another three months when I started to pray in tounges. Honestly, Jesus saving me through an open vision (that was totally unusual in that baptist Church) and filling me *seperately* with the Holy Spirit and with power, those two experiences were the most powerful and impactful experiences in my life. And they keep my running. Praying in tounges and ministering to others through interpretation - these and other gifts of the Spirit make my walk with Jesus so exciting. Wouldn't trade that for anything. Jesus is Lord!

Amen! A lot of theologians have never seen miracles before them as well and there intellectual side since childhood gives them a very anti-social outlook on life therefore a reserved Baptist church fits like a glove to them because everyone in that denomination has that same outlook on society. Adding on the fact that they dont Evangelize due to predestination adds an extra cap of reserve to this issue. Pentecostals tend to have more extreme backgrounds/testimonies that you dont tend to hear in many Baptist Churches and those people hunger for God in a more radical way so they end up finding themselves in a more radical church. Its hard to get my point across but this is just my observation. I hope someone understood it. Either way all Christian Denominations make up the bride of Christ. From all those he will pick. Now the Catholic church Im not sure if they fall in this category but some say yes, I say no, but only God knows. God Bless everyone who read this in Jesus Name Amen!!!

To start with, I do believe in gifts of the Spirit, but a lot of pentecostal churches both train to receive said gifts and expect people to speak in tongues or have some other physically obvious supernatural gift. They are often just as dogmatic about speaking in tongues as the baptist church you talked about was when calling your mother's gift false. People formerly from pentecostal churches often describe how they trained in tongues in order not to feel like an outcast. This understanding of how pentecostal churches often practice and enforce superstitious traditions, emphasizing feelings over faith (and mixing the two up), is probably what most of that baptist church was thinking of when they saw your mother, not realizing her tongues came from the Holy Spirit and not from practicing gibberish. People do speak in tongues (among other gifts, like healing and such). However: Biblically, it's wrong to demand people speak in supernatural tongues and to train to be able to. It's not a "gift" if you work for it. Those practices (training to receive the specific gift) are dangerous to people's spiritual health and, I would argue, heretical. You can't train to receive speaking in tongues nor any other gift. With certain gifts you can train to strengthen them, but you can't train to initially get them. You can, however, get closer to God through continually putting your faith in him, reading the Bible, and being in fellowship with other believers. And the Holy Spirit, as a result, may grant you the gift of tongues or some other physically obvious gift if it's necessary. But the faith comes before the gift, and a lot of pentecostal churches don't get that. The way you described your mother, I feel that way about mine. From having a grandfather who was a pastor where she grew up in Mexico (who was persecuted for not following old colony Menonite traditions and going back to what the Bible taught instead), to a dedicated prayer life, and being a constant spiritual rock in our family. But she never had the gift of tongues. I firmly believe it's not the tongues that make your mother such an awesome person, but her faith in Jesus. To be clear, I live in a city with a pentecostal church that doesn't train people in tongues and such. To my understanding they have people who speak in tongues and such, and are partners with my own local Church (which is from a different denomination) in various ways. So I can't say that all pentecostal churches are bad. But there is a danger: people often get too caught up in their gifts and rely on their feelings and get drunk on them. You see, that pentecostal church I mentioned had a large split some 15-20 years back, because they "weren't pentecostal enough". The split-off group went on to lose their foundation and basically became a small mega church (1 or 2 thousand members, shallow teaching that doesn't convict, and some extremely bad teaching like the one message I sat in for where they taught that Canada was mentioned in Revelation because a "maple leaf" was mentioned in Revelation 22:2-spoiler, it doesn't say maple, and that definitely isn't Canada). Based on what you describe of your mother, I believe her gift to be genuine. Yours may also be. That, however, isn't the case with so many people that the criticism of the pentecostal churches is legitimate in many cases, and is something pentecostal churches must constantly be aware of and fight off to stay true.

Pentecostal here. I really appreciate the tactfulness your team has put into this topic. I completely understand the perspective of being hesitant to speak in tongues for fear of 'faking it' or delving into emotionalism. As someone who has spoken in tongues myself, I can guarantee that you will know for sure when it is the Holy Spirit speaking through you and not your imagination. It is an act that requires total surrender, and is one that has personally made my walk with God much more intimate, powerful and real. While speaking in tongues, you simultaneously feel the presence of God and connect with Him in a personal way. I believe this is why 1 Corinthians 14:4 says it is for personal edification. The one thing I have often questioned is if speaking in tongues is the only evidence that a believer has the Holy Spirit. Growing up Pentecostal, everyone drills in you that it is the only evidence that you have the Holy Ghost. My parents taught me this, and while I had experienced the gift of tongues for myself, I grew up with a lot of fear that I would go to hell if questioned this idea or came to a different conclusion. While I am still digging in scripture for myself to come to my own conclusions, one piece of scripture I think is vital for this discussion is Acts 10:44-48... 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[a] and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. I think this passage at least infers that the way you can tell if someone *absolutely* has the Holy Ghost if they have the gift of tongues and / or prophecy. Also, the fact that this was poured out on the early church as the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2) leads me to conclude that it is something all believers should at least seek to have (1 Corinthians 14:5.) I don't believe that it died out with the apostles, but I believe it is a gift for today's church, and from my own experience, is a powerful tool that equips you with the boldness and power to fulfill God's will.

I grew up Pentecostal and they always seem to overlook 1 Cor 12 that plainly states not everyone speaks with tongues nor is that the intention of the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor 12 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

When you said you have spoken in tongues, do you mean you speak actual language? I'm honestly asking, not bashing. I believe that we can only "guarantee" things are genuine if the things that we proclaim genuine are in fact in Scripture. If not, it's up for debate and questions, not for mocking or anything like that but for filtering things that are absolutely true, against subjective truths that people usually claim to be true.

@@sontoshi25 no worries at all! There have been times when I have spoken a particular dialect that I knew was an earthly language. One time I began praying in tongues, and I knew based on the dialect that I was speaking French. I didn’t know what I was saying, but I just knew instinctively that was coming out of my mouth and I was blown away. I’ve never taken up day of French class in my life, and all of a sudden speaking fluently it’s the only time that’s happening. Most of the time, when I speak in tongues, it’s in a language that I am unsure of. It’s not complete gibberish though. There is a dialect, and certain accents and phrases that come out of my mouth when I speak it. I believe it’s what Paul referred to as speaking in tongues of angels.

The following proves you are correct. The most important thing about the word "baptism" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26. The fulfillment is found below. 1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

@@markmacmac8957 I just read the comment to you from "spottervideo". He is completely WRONG on each point. You are also wrong in your thinking that the Spirit is received by some act of your own will. YOU WERE DEAD IN TRESPASSES AND IN SIN. No dead person can call out to God or anyone else. YOU"RE DEAD. No man comes to the Father unless the Spirit draws him. The bible is clear; IN ADAM ALL DIED. When Adam sinned, EVERYONE DIED. Therefore Everyone is going to hell at that point. God chooses whom he will save even BEFORE the foundation of the world. YOU HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. That's not Calvinism; that's bible Fact. I would walk very carefully if you think you are going to add the law to Grace. Yours is a work system that you think it is up to your own ability to get saved. Paul calls that "Another Jesus" and says those people will be damned. The word in Greek for "another' means another of a Different Kind; NOT the same kind. God calls the ones he is going to save as, CHOSEN, CALLED, ELECT, PREDESTINED. It's ALL God and none of you. God gets all the Glory. You get none. I can prove that Mr. SpotterVideo is wrong on all counts. Here's a simple proof. He says baptism has nothing to do with the new testament. GARBAGE. Paul in 1corinth which was two decades past Pentecost, said that he was glad that he had baptized none of them except a few people. Their loyalties were divided, but Paul clearly water baptized. Philip baptized the Ethiopian after he asked if he could get baptized and found WATER. So Marc mac Mac, do you really wish to follow someone who lies against scripture? STOP TAKING SCRIPTURE OUT OF CONTEXT AND MAKE IT SAY SOMETHING THAT IT DOES NOT SAY. God is NOT happy with him. Don't add yourself to the list of people who walk around in error everyday. You can NOT praise God for saving you if you think you had anything to do with it. He is a jealous God and does not share his glory with anyone. Read John 1:13. It is NOT by the will of MAN. It is NOT by the will of the flesh. It is NOT by your own thinking process. It's not by blood which means that even if one of your parents were saved, doesn't mean that you will be. Obviously you have no Greek understanding but your English is pretty poor too. Leading Mr. Mark mac Mac astray is on your head. In 1Corinth Paul baptized a few people, but not many because they were divided as to what they were baptized into. You call Phillip a liar when he was asked by the Ethiopian to take him to the water and baptize him. There's no such thing as "ghost" in the Greek or English translation. There is no such thing as THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. JESUS IS THE BAPTIZER; NOT THE SPIRIT. I became a believer 10 years ago and about 5 years ago I started wondering about Holy Spirit. The two churches I attended in the first 5 years I was born again didn't really mention Holy Spirit but the Lord was really drawing me to seek out and learn more about Holy Spirit. I knew about the father and Jesus, but not about Holy Spirit. I prayed and asked God to help lead me to truth of Holy Spirit and to fully understand who He is. I just was so hungry for Him and I feel that God honored my desires by leading me to a teaching on the Holy Spirit by Paster Robert Morris of Gateway church called the God I never knew. I really enjoyed learning about Holy Spirit and as I learned it was all backed up biblically as I studied. I asked God for more of Him and that I wanted all of Him whatever that looks like or whatever you wanna call it. I knew I already had salvation and Holy Spirit living inside me but I wanted the full meal deal and I just knew that God had more for me. The Holy Spirit gave me more of himself and in time with faith and submission unto God I did recieve the baptism of the Holy Spirit or a filling up of more of him. It didn't have anything to do with emotions but just pure simple faith and trust in God giving me all he had for me. I want all of God and what He wants to supply me with and if thats more empowerment to walk out my Christian life with Him, then I am totally open to Him. It was in God's perfect timing that I became hungry to learn more of His Spirit. At that time I had a girlfriend who had recieved her prayer language but she really struggled with praying outloud with people. I felt the Holy Spirit urge me to ask her to pray for me to recieve more of Holy Spirit in my life and lay hands on me while we were at work. She was very nervous but faithfully did and I did recieve more of the Holy Spirit specifically I did pray in an unknown language but only a few words. I was so full of joy to feel the Holy Spirit overflowing out of me and as I yielded more of my life and faith to Him I have received other gifts through the last 5 years like words of wisdom, prophetic words,words of knowledge, discerning of Spirits, and I have grown in my prayer language with Holy Spirit. I have never given a public tongue or interpreted a tongue yet but I simply thank God for using me and let Him know that I'm His vessel and I'm open for all He has for me. At the end of the day I have a personal relationship with God through Jesus and I'm asking to be continually filled with His precious Spirit so that I can be and do all He is calling and equipping me to be and do!! The Holy Spirit is not spooky or forceful. He is a gentleman and he will never make you do anything you are uncomfortable with. You are always in control because you have a free will. Holy Spirit is full of power and might but never just takes over you. He will never make you look weird because he is not weird. All the times I've been blessed by Him using me by providing me with His gifts, it is always for someone else's benefit although I get totally blessed by having yielded myself to be used. Also Holy Spirit dispenses His gifts and we don't just demand. If He does not give you tongues then He will give you some other gift..but its for building up the church. Anyway just ask God to reveal Holy Spirit to you and lead and guide you into all truth. God has so much for His children so try not to be so legalistic about it.

Did you know? The Scriptures clearly predicted that the Holy Spirit was only for specific people. Do you have an idea to whom? It was NOT meant for everyone according to the Bible prophecy . People were set part through faith and believing and obeying the gospel of the Kingdom before the NT writings even existed. They were saved that way. No human blood sacrifice needed either. They believed what was written in the Hebrew Bible or commonly known as "the Old Testament" . I mean, when the Messiah was preaching the gospel to the crowds, He used the OT only. See Mark 1:15 and Luke 24:44-46

Amen and thank you! Being in a Pentecostal church (though they claim non-denominational), it has caused me to study and be really sure what I believe, and it's encouraging to me to hear from you the same things I've found. I've spent hours and hours and hours over the last couple years really trying to wrap my head around the Holy Spirit when it comes to stuff like this. Gifts and baptisms and fillings, you name it... What has been the most helpful is what you touched on. Using these words the way the bible uses them... Because when people ask me now "Are you filled?" when really they mean "Are you baptized?" it makes conversations much easier when we use the Bibles definitions, and not our own. Luke is the one who uses the phrase "filled with the Holy Spirit" throughout his gospel and Acts, and Paul uses it once (Ephesians 5:18). Nowhere else is this phrase "Filled with the Holy Spirit" ever used. Luke even uses it once in Acts "They were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit". So there seems to be a temporary thing about it, yet "baptism" always sounds one and done. Baptism is never used to imply something temporary. "Filling" is also never alone. You briefly touched on that, too. It's also always linked with an action. With witnessing or prophesying or speaking in tongues/magnifying God. I really enjoyed reading everywhere "filled with the Holy Ghost" and "full of the Holy Ghost" appears in the Bible. It helps set the right definition. And same with baptism. Anyone who isn't sure they have the right definition of a phrase, I encourage you to look up everywhere that phrase occurs, in context, and it sets the record straight really fast.

Thank you for this examination of scripture in regards to baptism vs filling of the Holy Spirit. I am new in Faith (2 yrs) and seek daily the filling and leading of the Holy Spirit in complete surrender and obedience to the Will of the Father. I had heard a teaching on the doctrine of a second baptism early in my salvation. I also remember when I asked God to help me have a relationship with the Holy Spirit and to be filled and lead in surrender and obedience to be the second baptism I had heard taught. I was recently corrected around this subject with the person pointing to the baptism at the time of salvation as you pointed out. It tested my heart and I took it back to study scripture and theological teachings. Though there is the scripture in Acts 8, I have learned scripture will will support scripture and there is great support in scripture of the baptism at salvation as opposed to a separate event and the separate event it a filling of the spirit. Great Word! Thank you

As a former AG pastor , and now I would consider myself an apprehensive continuationist, because we live in an age where the canon of scripture is closed, and the fact that the tongues in Acts were known human languages that God enabled them to speak supernaturally, what we are hearing today is not the real tongues spoken of in Acts but silly gibberish. I believe God can still give the real gift but I think it is rare, and when it would require interpretation it would need to be out of the pages of scripture. God is not speaking today beyond what his written word already says. If he is giving fresh revelation it would only be Him speaking from the ancient words of scripture in our present day. Otherwise, we really would have to believe in an open canon. This would be heresy to the early church Father’s.

I grew up AG, and such a ridiculous emphasis was placed on "baptism of the Holy Spirit" that I felt condemned and inferior because I didn't get it, no matter how long I pleaded with God. The one time I went to church camp as a preteen, they brought kids up on stage during nightly chapel, layed them on the floor with pillows under their heads and prayed fervently for them to be "filled with the Spirit." I took my turn and didn't understand why I didn't receive this "gift" of writhing around on the floor enraptured and speaking gibberish like everyone else. There was no grace, no joy of salvation, no eternal security in Christ, only condemnation and endless talk of "backsliding." I grew up terrified of Jesus' return because I feared He would leave me behind. It is evil to preach this impossible "gospel" to children. When I finally read the Bible for myself after experiencing grace for the first time in my mid-30's, I realized that I had been lied to all of my life and that I had been baptized into the Spirit and into the Body of Christ the moment I believed. All of the gibberish and jumping around and writhing on the floor were simply emotional manipulation. It served no higher purpose. It was all fake. I am grateful that God granted my request for a desire to read His Word because knowing the truth actually set me free from the bondage of legalism. Thank you, Jesus!!!

I don't think it's a function which a man can do. That wouldn't be very accurate to scripture in the immediate sense. Lot's of Christians were awful and Paul repoved so many of them. I think this is a function of God nameley the Holy Spirit. When the Gospel is preached the Word is quick and alive and so people recieve the Living Word and Jesus's Words are Life and Truth. When one has been given this Word it then seizes upon the individual so that spiritually they know it is True and if they accept that, which at least at that time was by the laying on of hands, then they accept that Spirit and that is the baptism of the Holy Spirit which washes away the sins of the individual and writes the Law on their hearts. If someone doesn't know Jesus is God Almighty then they can accept something less that seems like what you are calling a culture Christian.

Clarity? What about the part where Paul asked the "certain disciples" "Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?" (Acts 19:2) Why would Paul ask disciples of John if they'd received the Holy Spirit since they believed? I mean, believed what? Mike's argument is that they were disciples of John - not disciples of Jesus. Mike wants us to believe that Paul was asking a question that would only pertain and be logical in the context of the kingdom of God, right? Keep in mind that there were a LOT of disciples of John in the world at that time. Was Paul teaching or even thinking that they should have received the Holy Spirit? It doesn't ring true. So, Mike's theology stumbles on it's own internal "logic" - that is, it's not internally logical. The truth is that there are 29 post resurrection references to the word "disciple" in the Book of Acts. NONE of them are in reference to disciples of John. In other words, you have to impose "disciple of John" onto that single passage in order for it to even come close to working, which it does not because, as I pointed out, the question Paul asked is completely out of context. You'd never ask a disciple of John if he'd received the Holy Spirit. Clarity is not in Mike's teaching here.

I had done the altar call thing plenty of times during my journey with God. I prayed the prayer of repentance and I truly did believe in Jesus, his death, burial, and resurrection. I was raised Catholic and in 2016 a co-worker of mine asked me if I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues. I told her that I thought only special people got that.. I heard other people speak in tongues but didn't think it was for me. Long story short, September 2016, she invited me to her church, and they did an altar call and that day I went up again to the altar but this time, I was baptized in a baptismal pool right after, a worker at the church led us through the scriptures about receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Shortly after, we began to praise the Lord and as I was praising the Lord in English, the elder laid hands on me and I began to speak in tongues. An unknown language flowed from me and I cried and prayer in tongues for a while. That day I knew something happened to me that changed my life forever that was unlike any altar call I ever experienced. Yes, the gifts of the Spirit woke up in my life and I do move in the prophetic, but I always tell people the evidence was in my transformation. It was like Paul, a murderer of the Christians now preaching Jesus! (although I was not a murderer lol) Everything changed from that very moment. Yes I pray in tongues, but more than the tongues, there was a complete shift in my life. That is when I can say that I received the power to work out my soul salvation. The gifts, tongues, the transformation, the experiences with God, my relationship with God, all are byproducts of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I am a living witness to this. I do not think you need to speak in tongues to be saved but I will say once you experience it, you will know the difference. I love your teachings Mike, but I will say that some things cannot fully be understood unless you experience it for yourself. This is one of those things. I didn't receive the Holy Spirit and continue in a lifestyle contradictory to the Lord as some may argue I received “another spirit”. I wanted the Lord and righteousness. I discerned my need for him and was thrust into the scriptures for hours a day upon my conversion. I am a lover of the word of God and plan to attend seminary this fall! I pray that we learn not to despise others experiences as invalid simply because we have not experienced them ourselves. Rather, be open to what God wants to do. I want all he has for me and I am sure you do too! God bless you Mike! There is more ❤️

Actually Paul’s letters were addressed to saints, who were already born again. He is yet encouraging the saints to understand that if we sin AFTER being born again, that Christ Blood washes us of that stain. And SAVES us from His Wrath that comes upon GOD’s children who are disobedient. BUT The Scripture that tells us HOW to get into the Kingdom and How to be Born again is John 3:5 and Acts 2:38. Jesus said in John 3:5 That we must be Born again of water and of The Spirit in order to get into The Kingdom. Acts 2:38 Peter explains HOW to be Born again, and that is to repent and be baptized in Jesus Christ Name for the remission of your sins and then you will be filled with The Holy Ghost. Then you will be RAPTURE READY! Then Jesus also says in Mark 16 That these signs will follow them that believe and is baptized, it says they will speak in New Tongues . The New Tongues are The SIGN or EVIDENCE that The Holy Ghost has entered you and now you are BORN again! Just like in the natural when a baby is born there is the water it is brought forth out of and when it is born it already has a soul, and when it takes its first breath, and that is his spirits entering into him/her. And whatever country that child is born in, it will be evident by the language it will automatically began to speak. The same in the Spiritual, we must be brought forth out of the water ( baptized) and then GOD fills us with His Spirit. And now we are BORN AGAIN into The Kingdom of GOD, so now we WILL speak the native tongue of heaven because this is The Country we are Born into The Kingdom of Heaven is the place of our rebirth. GLORAAAY Be To Our GOD!

@Mike Winger - I found your explanation to be very helpful, and actually revealed an area that I think is very important; that area has to do with the "Filling of the Spirit" tied to doing work for the Lord, similar with the idea of overflowing into demonstrable "gifts" and praise; like praise, prophesy, joy, tongues, etc. Underlining the "WORK"; that willingness to go out in a way that walks with the Lord to do the work of evangelism, teaching, preaching, service, discipleship, comfort, etc... WORKING FOR AND WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. I grew up with knowledge of the Vineyard Movement from my parents history, but I myself grew up in churches that did not practice or teach in that vein, rather growing up in very evangelical bible churches that did not highlight "spiritual gifts" or the "baptism". However, I later came into an understanding of asking the Lord for "MORE", like you explained. And I received the more that I asked for in a very demonstrable move of the Spirit in my life, that resulted in a changed experience with the Lord and greater faith towards his faithfulness. Since then I have described such a thing as "there is always more to the Lord that he is willing to give for those who would ASK AND BELIEVE", trusting the promise of scripture and the goodness of the Lord to give the Holy Spirit to his children who asked. I think a necessary component that is often ignored is not MEERLY the will of God, but also the willingness and obedience of His children to seek the Lord in the "doing the stuff" as Wimber liked to say, I believe this is FAITH as described by Hebrews 11. I think this area has exploded with revelation for me because of your words here, in that filling being tied to doing the work of God by walking in the filling of the Spirit, constantly. I have a deep passion to bring the church together in this area, having seen both sides of the river, recognizing God's work in many strains of his church, but recognizing our utter dependance on the Lord to build his church and to walk in obedience, "doing the stuff" trusting His empowerment. There is a ton of scripture to go with all these points, and glad to enumerate some of that for any who are curious.

Thank you Pastor Mike for confirming what I understood to be. When we are told that we are born of water and of the spirit; after trying to understand for years what it means, this year It became clear (I beleive the Holy Spirit illuminated the understanding on this subject) and came to the conclusion that born of water refers to when we are naturally born and born of the spirit is when we are born again and the Holy Spirit comes to indwell in us to empower us to walk and live for God, transforming, sanctifying, guiding us in Spirit and in Truth. When Jesus ascended to be sitted at the right side of Heavenly Father; He than gave the Holy Spirit to His disciple to dwell within, to empower them to preach the gospel which is the power onto salvation. And so it is for everyone who is born again, we receive the Holy Spirit to empower us...whether we speak in tongues or not is irrelevant as we all have the Holy Spirit. Not everyone have the same gifts... So much emphasis is put on the supernatural gifts...when we are told that THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT IS LOVE. And when we have been given the two most important command by God: "But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:34‭-‬40 NKJV" AND "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:1‭-‬13 NKJV"

A curve ball to think about: The Scriptures clearly predicted that the Holy Spirit was only for specific people.

I believe when JESUS was talking to Nicodemus about being born of water and spirit refers to Ezekiel 36 verse 25-27 which Is a total work of GOD. Why do I believe this? Its because he said to Nicodemus you should not be surprised at this because he was a teacher of the law. So Nicodemus should have known what JESUS was talking about. Ask the HOLY SPIRIT to confirm this. I am convinced this is what JESUS was talking about.

For Hérōdés had killed him, though he was a good man and had exhorted the Judeans to lead virtuous lives, and to practice both righteousness toward one another and piety toward God; and while doing these things, to join in immersion. For this was a necessary preliminary if immersion was to be acceptable to God: they must not employ it to gain pardon for whatever sins they had committed; instead, they must do this as a purification of the body implying that the soul was already thoroughly cleansed by righteousness. LETTER OF ARISTEAS TO PHILOCRATES (~280BC) Following the custom of all the Judeans, they washed their hands in the sea in the course of their prayers to God, and then devoted themselves to the reading and explication of each passage. And I asked this question, “What is their purpose in washing their hands before praying?” And they explained that it is evidence that they have done no evil, for all activity is done by means of the hands. Thus they nobly and piously refer everything to righteousness and truth. Just to share my experience. Please keep in mind that I am the least among you and I am very blessed and thankful for salvation. The short version is that when I was saved, it started with absolute repentance as I was shown the wretched man I was. A few days later I was going through something where I was feeling ill as if I was in a battle, and a hand was placed on my right shoulder from behind. I could not move, but I was overflowing, feeling like my chest was gonna burst open (for months) and I felt a tiny glimpse of what the true reward is to be in the presence of the Lord, what true Heaven is, it is being with Lord Jesus Christ. That was the blessing of the Holy Spirit for me. I was not in a physical church at any of those times, but at home. It was visible days later as a light artifact in photo, like a white flame handprint/fingerprint. This is my experience, but I know that it can vary from person to person. My shoulder has never felt normal, it has been in pain ever since, but I love its reminder every day as I try to walk in this crazy world. It has been several years ago. My experience seems to match a biblical experience, but I am also sure the Lord will manifest the Holy Spirit however he chooses. EDIT: I never spoke in tongues or anything like that, just a quick note.

It Is the aroist participle that is used in acts 19 makes it very clear that apostle Paul was asking if they had the received the Holy Spirit AFTER believing. I have at least 20 Greek grammar books that all say the same thing. We should not use our preconceived notions to change what the scripture to a popular Evangelical notion. Even the Greek scholar AT Robertson says about this verse that it should be translated after believing, then he makes a very interesting statement… (paraphrase) but because it disagrees with our doctrine, we must not embrace it The context actually proves the point further. You will notice that these believers did not receive the gift of the Holy Spirit until after they were rebaptized and Paul laid his hands on them.

@@randalwdeese It is in his books etc. You could get an idea I guess from his videos . "Receiving the Holy Spirit." Basically I think he believes that Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the same as the first infilling. Is is when you actually are indwelt. And John 14:17 might explain "even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." The H.S was with them (presens) but (Future) shall/will be in them (Pentecost). I.e the Baptism in the Holy spirit is essential, but tongues is not the only sign, if you heal somebody or other spiritual manifestations you still got it. It must be an inward filling with outward signs. I'm sorry but don't quote me 100% on all this, but I think this is some of it as I remember.

I will need to read what he has written to see if I'm an agreement or not. However, with that being said, If what you say he teaches is true, I would disagree at some level. I believe every gift of the spirit was available before the day of pentecost, therefore, speaking in tongues would be a new evidence quite removed from the Old Testament gift usage, and thereby, being a unique sign of receiving the actual gift of the Holy Spirit. I will say that one can be completely converted before they ever receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. I will also say, that if one uses consistent hermanotics in both the epistles and the book of acts, there is no way that 1 can be convinced that 1 receives the gift of the Holy Spirit at conversion.

I heard somewhere recently that if God gives you a hunger for a gift, then He wants to give it to you. I tend to agree. I got saved early last year water baptized that May and got Baptized in the Spirit a month later. I was perplexed after water baptism if I had the Holy Spirit in me since I felt no change in me. I started praying earnestly and relentlessly for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, asking Jesus to show me He’s real. I showed up to church on Pentecost Sunday feeling in my limited baby Christian understanding that something special would happen that day. Sure enough, as we did holy communion and started praying for the power of God to come into our lives, I felt something stirring within me and something literally pushing me toward the altar. That’s where it all happened..electricity all throughout my body, legs shaking uncontrollably, the Spirit speaking through me and a feeling of great love I can’t describe. I described is as feeling like a princess in the presence of my prince. I couldn’t sleep for a couple of days after that because I was in such awe. I told people it was the best day of my life. Since then, I’ve had multiple powerful encounters with the Holy Spirit. I feel Him very strongly during worship, deep prayer and fasting. Our God is so glorious!

If you had to take a stab at it. Where do you think this teaching is found in scripture, explicitly if possible, or if you’d like to even try general I’m open to that too. Secondly do you think this is a work of God or someone’s desire to pursue earnestly ? I myself am don’t believe the baptism of the Holy Spirit different from the regeneration of the Heart which is what happens when someone gets saved. I got regenerated at 23 year old even after I’ve been to church all my life until that point. So when someone says “baptism of the Holy Spirit” I say I am baptized into one spirit but I don’t speak in tongues. People have tried to baptize me in the Holy Spirit and nothing happened. I did take offense to it a bit because it almost made me feel like they questioned wether I was even saved. I know I’m saved, God saved me from the gates of Hell by giving me a new heart like Ezekiel 11 says. So when I hear people talk of this “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” different from my regeneration, I puzzle as to how one like me can get it? I don’t see it taught explicitly in the scriptures. Only thing I see clearly is that it comes after the laying of the apostles hands.

Like Mike says, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is what happened to the apostles in Pentecost, what happens at salvation. The Spirit can manifest himself in different ways once it resides in us. God, who is the Spirit knows what is needed and He will manifest according to what He sees appropriate. Now, that union with the Spirit must produce the Fruit of LOVE which is the result of that relationship. Being baptize by the Spirit is also the same as being born again, the Holy Spirit joins to our spirit to become ONE spirit with Him, therefore becoming children of God.

@@approvedofGod clearly it states in 15 that his understanding would be unfruitful, correct? So therefore you don’t understand because you are praying in the spirit and you should then also pray for understanding which is exactly what I just said. Don’t take the words out of context and try to explain to me something that simply isn’t true to fit your argument. In Acts they didn’t know what the Holy Spirit even was, they knew of John baptizing them and hardly knew the Gospel. That’s when Paul explained to them so yes, I do have the understanding but you can’t say one thing just to justify that I don’t know something when I never said anything to point towards not knowing it. The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost then they came up speaking in tongues in all known languages to everyone. Then later in Corinthians after Acts, Paul teaches them not to do this in church unless there is an interpreter, if there isn’t you’re to keep quite and speak to yourself. When you are praying in the spirit it speaks of mystery and you are to pray for understanding as well. 1 Corinthians 14:2 - 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 , 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 1 Corinthians 14:38-40, We have it all here from Paul and they shall all be done decently and in order. The confusion a lot of people get with this “water baptism of the Holy Spirit” isn’t separated from the baptism of the Father Son and Holy Ghost .The spirit dwells within us after we are saved and to showcase the we get baptized. What happened in Acts which is why people say we need to further be baptized by the Holy Ghost-Spirit is because THEY weren’t. In Acts they hadn’t known this, they only knew of Jesus and partially been taught the Gospel. We see this in Acts 1:1-8 specifically but through the chapter and into chapter 2. Then comes the day of Pentecost which is why the Pentecostal churches still believe we speak in tongues etc.. Which they don’t do it according to how Paul wrote for them to do it. Also in 1 Corinthians 13:8 it talks about many things failing and tongues shall cease. We have the scriptures and we should pray for understanding no matter what. God isn’t the author of confusion nor the spirit of lacking self control 1 Corinthians 14:33 and Galatians 5:23 “23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Temperance meaning self control.

I accepted Jesus as a teenager, got baptized in the waters and looked to get baptized in the Holy Spirit. It didn't happen until 6 months later for me. It was most certainly a second event, and it's what truly empowered me to operate in the fullness of my faith and calling in the Lord. This baptism has been very clearly treated as a separate event as far as everything I've read in the Word about it in my 20+ years in the Faith. I witnessed a family member getting baptized in the Holy Spirit completely alone at home during a personal time of prayer with the Lord, and spoke in tongues, also months after being baptized in the waters, and while going to a church that didn't even believe in the supernatural gifts of the Spirit. The baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't an overflow of the spirit, however. It's God's Spirit dwelling within you and empowering you in supernatural ways on how to live successfully for Christ. I don't know why the American church has such a hard time understanding this. The lack of a focus in ministering the baptism in the Holy Spirit is why Western church members have such a hard time struggling with sins their entire life while our churches in the East thrive even before death and in lack, since we pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit right away after anyone's salvation. Accepting Jesus is NOT the indwelling of the Spirit. It's simply your profession of faith and commitment. The baptism in the water is the confirmation of that faith and loosening of your ties with the kingdom of darkness. However, you will struggle much more as a believer if you do not receive the Holy Spirit. This is why you see people getting baptized in the waters manifest demons right when they're about the be dunked in the water even though their response to Christ was genuine.

So it’s cool to see this video come out today discussing this very topic. It’s a shame that so many people seem more interested in the signs of God, rather than the substance of God. Jesus said it best when addressing the Pharisees and Scribes in Matthew12:39 (LSB): “An evil and adulterous generation eagerly seeks for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;”

Three times in scripture we see examples of believers recieving the Holy Spirit and what happened immediately upon them recieving the Spirit ( Acts ch.2,10, and ch.19). In each instance the first thing that happened was that they spoke in tongues. Recieving the Holy Spirit is so crucial to our salvation that God doesn't leave it up to a person or even ourself to say when we have recieves but gives a supernatural, biblically backed sign when we do and that is speaking in tongues. I was aware of the Holy Soirits' presence around me and wad filled with the Spirit before I ever recieved " tha anointing that abideth( 1John 2:27). I wonder: Doesn't Paul's question show that he knows a faith without baptism in the Spirit?Why else would he ask the question exactly like that? While it will probably be true that these disciples were indeed only John disciples, Paul's question seems to suggest that he was distinguishing between "non-Spirit-baptized believers" and "Spirit-baptized believers." Would be glad to have an answer. Regarding the terminology, I agree with you. It is interesting to see how cautiously Luke uses the term "baptism in the Spirit" in Acts. Rather, he uses "filling with the Holy Spirit." Nevertheless, should we not distinguish how Paul and Luke fill the terms "baptism in the Spirit" differently? In Acts 1:5 Jesus speaks that his disciples should be baptized with the Spirit. It is wrong, in my opinion, to take a Pauline understanding of Spirit baptism and insert it into the Lucan work, when the latter emphasizes primarily the power of the Holy Spirit for witnessing in Luke & Acts. If we only had Luke and Acts, we probably wouldn't even really realize that the Holy Spirit has anything to do with our salvation. From a Pentecostal perspective, we therefore know of a missiological dimension of the Spirit (Luke & Acts --> baptism of the Spirit as power for witnessing, separate event from regeneration) and a soterilogical dimension (especially Paul), which shows us how the baptism of the Spirit makes us children of God and part of the church. These are also not opposed to each other, but complement each other. Acts 19 in particular seems to show how Paul also knew this distinction.

I’d like to say first, I love your channel. How do you differ the indwelling of the Spirit that happens upon salvation compared to the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus? I love that you don’t want to fake anything, neither do I. When I got saved and did the whole answer the alter call thing, I was led through a prayer but I know looking back it was when I believe that I was saved, and that at that point the confession in front of a preacher is just a formality because I was saved when I believe the message of Christ and with my mouth I confessed him as lord even though no one heard me say it yet. When I was asked by the preacher for my name I spoke in tongues as in an unknown language not another known language. I didn’t know what I was doing but all I could do is hold my stomach and what felt like a dam broke inside of me and I didn’t want it stop. From here I went on to experience some pretty amazing things that have shaped my walk and have kept me hungry for God and his word. I then fell into a trans and was taught the book of Ephesians chapter 6 by an angel and I “woke up” 1.5hrs later asking who the tall blonde guy was and why was he wearing Roman armor. No one knew what I was talking about. I woke up that night at 2am and wrote a song called the armor of God. The next day the preacher asked me if I wanted to pray over the offering and as I did I spoke my first prophecy. I didn’t know any of the formalities, in fact I was so ignorant, I thought the preachers wife was saying the annoying of the lord is here, I didn’t know it was the anointing lol I have had other experiences where i would spend a long period of time praying in tongues and then lead a Bible study and in the middle of it, I’d start quoting Bible verses I had never read from many different books of the Bible. No one else knew I didn’t know what I was quoting until I told them. Then we would look it up and see it was word for word Corinthians, revelations, Samuel etc. Eventually these occurrences were so common and I was so ignorant/untaught that I was labeled a demon possessed person and asked to stop. I would go on for 4 years learning in secret until I entered a respect Bible college and was mentored by an elder. I grew very resentful of the people that I loved that led me out of darkness and led me into light only to throw me away when they didn’t experience what God was doing through me, which I never asked for by the way. I hated the attention of it, I just wanted God and all of Him. I learned to forgive and actually called that church and asked to be forgiven for any disturbances that I caused to the church. They also asked me to forgive them and we reconciled and are good friends and I still call those pastors for advice now. What they said to me was, Eddie we are sorry we didn’t have the knowledge we do now to instruct and shape you into the man you are today. We pray for the instruction from Heaven to led people who God chooses to use in those capacities. God is Good!! Reconciliation is always better than division!

From my study this is extremely helpful. I do not despise any of the gifts as taught throughout scripture. I have had them weaponized against me. So when we read in context 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14; it sheds light on how we all don’t have that gift and it’s okay, if you teach contrary you’re not operating in love and not to be recognized because the Holy Spirit himself inspired these believers to give us the Word of God along with manifestations of the gifts. When Jesus breathed on them and said "Receive the Holy Spirit"...I lean towards this was the moment that they were "sealed" (Ephesians 1:13). The overflowing would later occur at Pentecost. Why did Jesus breathe on them? It certainly seems like two separate events.
@givethanks6714
@givethanks6714 3 жыл бұрын
Or that when Jesus did that, he just made them ready or something for pentecost and the true reception. There is no proof they got anything in John. And what about Thomas? He was not there when Jesus did it. Ep 1:13 actually fits more with Pentecost. Why? "The promise" In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the "promised Holy Spirit"". jesus said; Act 1:4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise" of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; Act 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” You see, the Spirit is the promise, and that was the pentecost experience. Also Galatians testify with: Gal 3:14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive "the promised Spirit" through faith.

@@ChipsAplentyBand I understand where you are coming from! Yes, I will pray for you my friend. Chronic illness is no fun and games. But Jesus is with us every hour of every day, He knows what you are going through. It is up to us to stand firm in Christ, read our Bible, and not falter in our faith whether He heals us or not! If we stand close to Him without faltering, He will stand close to us at Judgement Day! That is what this life's journey is all about! Will we stand no matter what? That is the faith by which we will be judged! Like Paul said in the Bible that He counted his sufferings for Christ to be all joy! Why? Because it brought him closer to Jesus! Mike, I agree that we need to consider the context of Acts 19 to better understand how this relates to the baptism in the Holy Spirit. So let's take a look at what was happening at the end of Acts 18 with Apollos to get the context. Apollos was not only a follower of the way, but "he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John" (18:25 NASB). There was more for him to learn; but Apollos had fully accepted the basics of Christ's Messiahship, and he preached this fervently to the Jews. Apollos' faith in Christ in Acts 18 is a critical point to understand the context of chapter 19 due to the fact that he was apparently making converts at Ephesus and baptizing them into John's baptism of repentance before he received further instruction. Such converts could have included the twelve Ephesian disciples discussed in the Acts 19. These Ephesian disciples bear a remarkable similarity to Apollos and are described as "disciples", a term consistently referring to followers of Jesus in the book of Acts. They were true believers in Paul's estimation, for he sought to know if they had been baptized in the Holy Spirit since they placed their faith in Christ (19:2). "Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?" is unquestionably a more accurate translation of the Greek than "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" The Greek is literally rendered, "Having believed, did you receive?" Thus, believing in Christ precedes receiving the Holy Spirit baptism in time. Some translations which turn the verse into "Did you receive ... when you believed" actually put Paul in the position of asking a nonsensical question. If, as some argue, all automatically receive the Holy Spirit baptism when they first believe, why would Paul even bother asking such a question? It is true that all believers are baptized into the body of Christ at conversion by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12:13). But being baptized into the Holy Spirit is not the same phrase, and should not be confused as one and the same event. Thank you Mike for all of your excellent videos and insights into the scriptures. This is one point where I would just offer an alternate understanding based on a fuller understanding of the context.

@@seanvann1747 Hi bro, thanks for the nice tune. However I do think 1 Cor 12:13 is also done by jesus, i.e the same as Matthew 3:11. Both have the preposition "en", often meaning in. Paul is equal to John the baptist in that he said that people should do works worthy of repentance, why would this not be same also? The harmony is much more glorified, than using 1 Cor 12 to make up a new doctrine that does not have any other witness to it, or do you have? Blessings back.

@@givethanks6714 Hey brother 👋 actually we see in the Matthew verse the preposition "en" 1722 is used. In every translation I've read even the literal ones uses the word "with" As for the 1 Cor verse we see the preposition actually is "eis" 1519 which means into or a motion that penetrates. So there is a distinct difference The first is a baptism BY Christ WITH the Holy Spirit. (Endued with power) The second is a baptism BY the Holy Spirit into the faith ie. salvation Hope this clarifies the distinction between the 2 baptisms 😇 Please hear my heart in this question. Most Christians I speak with that try and take your position is because they themselves have not had 2 separate baptisms. Therefore most have been baptized into Christ but have not had the "Spirit come apon them" like see in Acts 8:4-19. Am I correct in assuming this is also true in your case? Once again please hear my heart when I ask you this. I truly love you my brother and only want everything that Christ paid for you to be a reality in your life 💪 Be blessed 🙌

Even tough words can have more meanings; you see G1722 is "en", i.e often "in". Same as Matthew 3:11 "en". etc. "Eis" is often "into" and that is the point. When Jesus baptizes someone IN the Holy Spirit, that person gets INTO his body - the ekklesia/assembly/chruch etc. Yes many bibles translate Matthew 3:11 "with", but some "in". Again G1722 is both places, so it should be the same happening. That also makes Harmony. I have what you think I lack, bro. I have gotten things from God, I praise the Lord in humbleness.
