Thank you all information you provide. In the end of 2016, I was hospitalized with ckd . Creantine levels of 18 plus. Left the hospital. Creantine we’re about 6, Gfa of 10. Put on a low sodium renal diet. Which consisted of a list of foods to avoid, and a sodium daily intake of less than 2400 mg. So I started my journey for more knowledge of diet etc. figured out breakfast would a bowl of fresh fruit, lunch was a little more difficult, but settled on veggie sandwich or fruit salad. Dinner was a vegetable, salad, and protein like pork, chicken, yes on occasion beef. Also went down the road of vitamin D deficient. My 25 hydroxy were about 12. Put on 20000 IOU’s. Taken weekly. Which had little etc. saw a lecture on vitamin D. Very informative, particularly in the dosage, started to supplement d3, 2000 iu,s. Next visit saw a increase in 25 hydrox level into to 25 range. So I increased d3 to 4000 iu’s. Also started taking K2, at the same based on the info from same lecture. I got a lecture from my kidney doctor, that the K2 would do nothing for my kidneys. But it was ok to take. I always had a feeling, that there would a benefit to me. That other pet peeve I had was getting my blood work done before my visits. So we could have an intelligent conversation, about my numbers. I did have one doctor in the hospital, my urologist who incouraged my to continue what I was doing. Because as she said, it was working. I wish more healthcare people would watch, and be come informed and help their patients. Instead of paying attention to the bottom line. I saw the mission statement of the rental clinic, and it read to guide you thru dialysis, and or kidney transplant. So thank you, I am looking to more informative episodes

Thank you for sharing your journey! We are glad you are finding the episodes helpful. It can definitely be frustrating, especially with old/outdate "renal diet" information out there. We're happy to have you here!

Dr Hashmi and Michelle. I had my two week blood work done. Last one showed a gFR of 23 and it had gone up 5 points. this time my gfR is "9" it also surprised me that my Cholestrol and creantine were very high, why ? i had been doing intermittent fasting, does this have a bearing on it ?

Strawberries are implicated in increase stone formation, as is high levels of vitamin c.

High dose vit C supplements are not recommended for people with CKD or history of kidney stones. Vitamin C from food sources has not been shown to increase risk of stones. And the alkaline producing benefits of fruit, fiber, antioxidants, etc all are beneficial for CKD and preventing stones :)

That's great you have been able to control your blood sugar levels! It is so important for preventing kidney damage from diabetes. People with normal blood potassium levels are not recommended to restrict potassium in the diet. Potassium can actually help lower blood pressure (which prevents kidney damage).

What about Durians and Dragon Fruits? Can people with CKD eat them? Why (not)?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on potassium needs! Durian is very high in potassium (> 1000 mg per cup, cubed) and dragon fruit is moderate potassium (~300 mg per fruit)

What if CKD is causing gradual insulin resistance in spite of adherence to a strict renal diet. How to manage this almost all carbohydrate diet especially when it comes to fruit? How can a person with CKD regain insulin sensitivity without going on a ketogenic diet? Have been unable to find an answer anywhere.
@saritakumta5958
@saritakumta5958 2 жыл бұрын
A high carb , whole food plant based diet which is low fat would improve insulin resistance . A keto diet would be extremely harmful as it causes insulin resistance by increasing fat storage within muscle cells and liver cells thus interfering with insulin signalling. A keto diet may temporarily improve blood sugars in a diabetic because of lack of carbs but actually makes the insulin resistance worse and makes the patient more diabetic . When such a patient consumes any carbs the blood sugars shoot up . Also high protein esp animal protein directly damages the kidney . So the amount of animal protein and fat in our diet should be zero for preventing further kidney damage .

@@saritakumta5958 I have been on a whole plant diet for almost 4 years,very low in fat and eating two very small portions of meat per month. I’m extremely careful with my diet. All my food is made from scratch, I’m very thin,I eat real food , drink just water, no sweets, no rice, pasta, no junk food,no cookies, go for walks. My blood sugar should normal but it isn’t, A1c is 5.9. My primary doctor left her practice before going over my latest results. I thought I was doing everything right. My next nephrologist appointment is next year. He wouldn’t refer me to a renal dietician saying that “you are not there yet”. I’m doing all I can not to slide into stage 4 and/or become diabetic. I feel totally lost and confused.

@@ingelopez9829 I am sure that if you cut out the meat completely, you would be able to stabilise your kidney function . I have seen my patients improve kidney function consistently after stopping animal products completely. Also make sure that your BP is normal . Maybe another non medical thing that you could do if your belief system allows it would be to utilise the law of attraction in your favour by using affirmations and visualisations for better kidney health . I do firmly believe in mind over matter . Your thoughts can indeed change your destiny . All the very best !

Hi. My dad has Diabetes. Sadly he is having Diálisis done. Any fruit is fine as well? As far as Sugar wise?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth

You'll want to check with his renal dietitian at dialysis for individualized recommendations. If he is having a hard time controlling blood sugar, berries are great lower sugar, higher fiber, and lower potassium fruit though!

@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 2 жыл бұрын
Bananas can very likely fit in your kidney protective diet. They are a high potassium fruit, so you will want to base the portion you consume off your individual potassium needs! 1 large banana has ~ 490 mg potassium. So if you're on a potassium restriction you would not want to eat a whole banana.
