What is the law of surprise? Many of you will have heard about the law of surprise and it's place in the world, but I doubt you will know everything about this witcher law of surprise. In this video I explain to you about the witcher law of surprise, the children of surprise, geralt's experiences with the law of surprise. I also go into how Geralt met ciri and how geralts found ciri again.

A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. Also it's a tiny mistake, but the game seems to be set more in Renaissance than medieval ages - judging by their architecture, fashion, and paintings that clearly use perspective and realistic human anatomy. It can be hard to judge though, for several reasons: 1. Obviously, it's a made up world so it doesn't have to strictly fit real history. 2. Large part of the game takes place in Eastern European and Scandinavian inspired countries. Renaissance started in Italy and spread across Europe from there. Since there was no internet or fast means of transportation it was a few centuries before it flourished in for example, Poland. At the point Renaissance became a thing in Poland Italy was already slowly getting fed up with it. I am not that familiar with Scandinavian Renaissance but I would guess the situation was similar there, so Skelige can also seem more medieval. 3. Obviously old medieval buildings didn't disappear overnight so there are some medieval style buildings in the game. Especially old ruins, etc. Plus you deal with peasants a lot who wouldn't be able to afford most fashionable clothing. But looking especially at architecture in larger cities, the way the rich people dress, and the fact they have paintings and sculpture that have realistic perspective and human anatomy it's definitely more Renaissance than Middle Ages.

I have not read the books, but in the show they say that the law of surprise usually gives you something like a puppy. So cats are realistic in that universe. A child would be rare, A king's child even less so, but hey that's why Geralt is the main character.

You forgot to mention that for the law of surprise to be sealed, the child must agree to it, if the child refuses to go with the one who claims them, the law of surprise is null and void. Geralt reminded that to Duny, yet given that him and Pavetta were already lovers, she said yes.

you're missing an important point: the Law of Surprise can be invoked ONLY if the person you saved offers you a reward of WHATEVER YOU WANT. in the 'Question of price' Calanthe bashes her late husband for not realising that before offering Duny reward for saving his life, and at the end of the story, after Geralt saves Duny and Duny tells him exactly that, Geralt says something to the effect of "before i answer i have to make sure you mean it". then in the story 'Something more' the merchant offers Geralt WHATEVER HE WANTS not for saving his life but for saving his cart carrying a year's worth of income, and Geralt agrees, using the "something you already have but don't yet know" phrase (he then nearly dies, then changes his mind, then meets his mother, spoiler alert, read it, it's good) it's a little strange that Anarietta, being an educated woman, doesn't now that. but we find later in game that she didn't always pay attention in school...

From what I understood from the book, the law of surprise binds the person that invoques it and what was invoqued, whether it's an object, a person or whatever. With that in mind it's no coincidence at all that Geralt would claim Ciri twice. The first time events led to the law not being fulfilled, but fate finally brought them back together the second time.

That is correct. It's actually not uncommon for Witchers to be a product of the Law of Surprise, since Witchers are sterile. Pretty much all Witchers were either claimed through the Law of Surprise or they were orphaned by a monster and had nowhere else to go.

I actually just finished reading Sword of Destiny yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. It for sure filled out a bunch of questions that I had about how Geralt and Ciri met. On the downside, though, I'd hate to be the women in the usual version of the law of surprise with the taking of kids... imagine your hubby coming home with a random man after not seeing him in ages and excited -I'd hope- to tell him about his kid only to instantly be told that that child is being force-ably taken from your home and you'll never see them again....

Dooney (sp?) Was destined to be with pavetta because of the law of surprise so ciri was destined to be birthed because in pavetta's adolescence, she still chose to be with dooney despite his humaniod hedgehog form

I know I'm super late with this comment (a year late, to be precise). Regarding the Law of Surprise - there are some extra details related to it. First of all, the Law was used by Witchers to recruit new members - since Witchers weren't really the type of job you could just send your CV to. It was said that the child that was obtained through the Law of Surprise had a much greater chance to pass the Trial of Grass, which was the process of mutation that decimated the soon-to-be-witchers. In the earlier centuries of human colonisation of the Continent, need (and respect) for Witchers was much greater and Law of Surprise was honoured and venerated across the human communities.

Well I am thinking does the law of surprise always have to be person/living thing or can it be a thing or any supernatural forces like curses or blessing. For example if a witcher saves a man's life and demand a law of surprises. Then when the witcher goes to the man's house, he founds a sword which that man's children or wife found. I mean it does make sense too because most women in places of power are competing with men who have a natural proclivity to dominate power so if any women are in attainment of any degree of real unfathomable power it's likely they are outliers and will most likely have a temperament or attitude that reflects such character sometimes even more domineering than most males just because of that fact.infact you can look at real wood examples and find that some of the outliers of women in power wasn't necessarily a good thing not because of the notion that oh just men do it better but more along the lines of the few who can compete when biologically it wouldn't make sense usually indicates drastic psychological governing to make the kinds of results they are pulling which is another indicator of a poor ruler as all things and choices tend to have a underlying reason to any given decision and if any of those underlying decisions were in spite of a us and them factor usually blood or pessimism follows so I'm not saying women can't lead but what I am saying is that the few who can still lead at the most radical extremes of power are most likely of ill underlying intent more to send a message then to slide into place their responsibilities of their reigns more so about how people perceive who they are and to whome they send a message to as opposed to intended result of the values necessary for the intended position of power..."but hey what do I know I'm just some lowly Witcher"

It's based on the fairytale Hans my Hedgehog. The story goes, an older couple desparate for a child wished a wish to have one, doesn't matter if it's a hedgehog, they just want a child. Their wish was granted.

No, Geralt was one of the few Witcher's who was not a child surprise. His mother just gave him to the Witchers , and he had a lot of resentment toward her because of that. I believe that story is either in Sword of Destiny or Last Wish. He gets injured and meets her when she is called in to heal him. Both books are great and definitely worth a read!

I can imagine very hilarious things to hand to a witcher as a result of invoking this, like give a witcher a pretty pink ribbon, a used condom, an unwanted birthday/Christmas present. Lol you can imagine the pranks the more prankster people would give to Witchers when they choose to invoke the Law of Surprise. Or if you're cynical enough, a family member you dislike a lot can be the "reward" to the Witcher. xD
