I just fail to see the point of the BBC funding the world service, around £300 million a year, for what?

I listened to the World Service a lot during the 1980s. Interesting how the domestic BBC continuously hammered the South African regime to the exclusion of every other country with dodgy human rights. Interesting to find the World Service was balanced. Regimes in south and central America plus other African countries receiving equal air time.

I worked for the P.O. throughout the 80's and 90's. And I would say the words "not as much as you think.." in reply to your question. There's another reply to your comment that guesses at £5 a letter. My guess would be more like 5p a letter. Do you know how much 5p X millions of letters adds up to? For what is basically just getting posties to deliver to where they're going anyway? Yeah... The P.O. sales team would sell those deliveries for pennies.

I have am important question, the BBC charge everyone in the UK that watch live TV, which I'm not one of them, for watching live TV, why? Why do they make you pay to watch a channel they don't own like channel 4, HTV, channel 5 and all the other live TV channels that finance themselves by using adverts, so why can't we watch those companies without having the BBC taking us to court?

The only reason I see it is, the BBC can easily be recieved like the other freeview channels through an ordinary TV at the same time. Or counter-propaganda in some countries. If I'd not cancelled my TV licence (some time ago now, thankfully), the part I would least begrudge is that which would go to the BBC World Service (about £15 per annum in today's terms). For some people, in some countries, Russia, China and Iran, for example, which means billions of them, the only broadcast information they receive is that put out by their own governments much of which, especially in those countries mentioned, will be lies and propaganda. At least, with the BBC World Service, they may get an alternative view on things, especially if the people speaking to them (310 of them, apparently) have been forced to live in exile from those countries.

Some of its content is fascinating, learning something new from across the world in science, medicine, religion politice etc. Could I do without it?, of course, but as a 'private eye' reader I get all the news necessary long before it hits tv and the press. For example, the mag has covered the Post Office scandal for decades, and also the Ben Houchen fiasco on Tees side, so who needs the beeb?

In red capital letters it says OUR RECORDS SHOW YOUR PROPERTY HAS NO TV LICENCE. ACT NOW, TO AVOID FURTHER INVESTIGATION. It goes on, not in capital. You haven't responded to our previous communications about this address being unlicensed, so you were visited today. This was to officially notify you that our investigation is being escalated to the next stage. To stop this progressing, you need to take action now. Good vid Jon. Three things. If the World Service has strategic importance, it seems a fairer way to fund it would be from via the FCDO. (Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office). They would in turn have to receive a budget increase to facilitate this. However, this would be fairer as the bill wouldn’t be footed by only the TV Licence payers. Additionally, if the FCDO were setting their budget, they would potentially have the power to ensure that the World Service production and output would be aligned with their objectives. The World Service objectives will likely already be driven by the FCDO, but by the time the costs to meet these objectives go through the BBC corporate machine, there is likely fat added to both output and overheads. This way it would have to stay within budget. With that in mind, would it potentially be worth considering splitting the World Service away from the BBC, kind of like BBC Studios has been?

Great News!!! I got my 50% tv license for being registered blind😂 AND a refund for paying a full license the last 6 years!! Whoop. Thats £500 the BBC no longer have. Remember folks, anyone you know whos registered blind gets half price. And its the HOUSEHOLD. Just put the license in that persons name. It doesn't have to be the home owner. Anyone over 75 and on pension credit gets a FREE license.

I’ve said it for years. Privatisation of the BBC is great and adverts would be excellent and I WOULD pay for a separate NEWS Chanel all day long.

Sincere question: what are the origins of your fixation the BBC licence fee? It’s an unusual issue to dedicate two You Tube channels to? What set you off on this vendetta? Did your choice on Strictly Come Dancing not win? Did Sue Barker’s removal from Wimbledon tip you over the edge? Something must have happened.

If you watch The BBC News Channel in The UK, you would be forgiven for thinking that this Channel is a BBC World Service Outlet, since we get very little in the way of any rolling UK Home grown News on this so-called BBC News Channel. I have been listening more to The Sky News Channel which is not Top-Heavy with Foreign News items as their main go-too. The ONLY things you will get shoved down your throat over on BBC News is UK Politics which at best is totally boring, and will over the next 6 weeks send us all off to sleep.

Why do you even care about what the BBC spends ? You don't pay a licence fee. The BBC doesn't cost you a penny.

Nobody needs a licence. Remember that. You only pay it of you want to and there is NOTHING they can do if you don't pay it.

Somebody tell the bbc that no one has a radio. People use a vpn and use the internet in other countries.

Many do not and all they have is what is sent across the air waves.

There's often no Internet connectivity in war zones. And old fashioned radio is the only way to communicate.

@@michaelturner4457 Indeed so, and where there is no electricity either, to receive transmissions, people have to use clockwork radio receivers.
