I thought I'd slot this comment in here rather than start a new one, I'm pleased that someone pointed out the name of the band is ''SHOES'' (not the Shoes) ther is no 'the' in their name. Though it's an easy mistake to make (see common mistake, Eagles often called 'The' Eagles, there isn't any 'The' in their name also'), I think there is a different band called 'The Shoes', so watch out when you search for ''SHOES'' @@TheOmahaIntrovert cheers🎸

Hi Hanna- this video is definitely up my alley! Nice synopsis of Power Pop genre. I can’t argue with any of your top 10 selections or honorable mentions. I have the majority of the albums you showed, but I still need to check out Blue Ash. Additional favorites I’d mention are Material Issue 'International Pop Overthrow', Eugene Edwards 'My Favorite Revolution', The Someloves 'Something or Other', Tommy Keene 'Songs From the Film' and The Keys s/t (obscure 80’s UK vinyl only release produced by Joe Jackson). Have a great Sunday! - Matt

The Knack were tremendous musicians, and that first album is great. Yellow Pills is a true power-pop classic, and so glad you mentioned Shoes! Elvis Costello has one of the strongest and most complete catalogs in all of music. Read his autobiography a couple of years ago, what a great read that was. The Posies are awesome, have seen them a number of times, a very under-appreciated band. And a big yes to XTC Drums and Wires and Black Sea. Nice to see you mention the Replacements, actually opened for them way back when. Cheap Trick was my first concert, and one of my favorite bands ever. I had a feeling the Records and Badfinger would be up there, and just knew Big Star would be number one because they were absolutely enthralling as a band and had so many fantastic songs. You included everything I hoped you would, thank you so much!

Fantastic selection, and SO happy you're giving Sloan some love, one of my favorite bands, and Power Pop genre in general. Their albums, aside from the current reissues, are pretty hard to find (impossible in some cases) or too cost prohibitive (for me, anyway). And, my God, Teenage Fanclub hasn't released a sub-par album ever, so so good. As I am watching this I'm thinking to myself, "Man, where's the Nick Lowe...?", and then relaxed when you brought out Pure Pop (or, Jesus Of Cool, depending where you are in the world), so thank you for that as I would have hadd a coronary if you hadn't! :) Fantastic selection, can only think of one that's a favorote of mine and that would be Dwight Twilly's Sincerely, almost (not quite) up there with Pure Pop, and one I discovered way late in the game.

I went on a buying spree last December and January (well before the lockdown) and snapped up four Matthew Sweet albums, something by Sloan and a few others but I haven't heard them enough yet to know how I feel. Hi Hanna Very good video you did a fine job defining Power Pop which is quite difficult to do. I can't believe how many of the albums you showed I have, but also some I was unaware of. I will be on the look out for those. My Favourites are The Flamin Groovies , saw them again last year they have a big following in the UK. Of course Big Star and the Raspberries and an Australian band, The Hoodoo Guru's. I also love a guy called Van Duran from Memphis who hung about at Ardent Studio's where Big Star recorded. His debut album 'Are you Serious' is a classic, influenced by Rungren and Emmit Rhodes. Unfortunately it was his only released LP and sunk without trace. Though my number one would be Pezband who came from Chicago and made a great LP called 'Laughter in the Dark'. Though so much great music like you I could name dozens. I would be hard pressed to name a top ten, who to leave out. I think power pop is not taken that seriously in the UK and bands like the Groovies and Nick Lowe are labelled Pub Rock. Fantastic job and thanks. Gary

The first two Joe Jackson albums (Look Sharp and I’m the Man), Squeeze’s East Side Story, Michael Penn’s March, Aimee Mann’s I’m With Stupid, Crowded House’s first two albums(Crowded House and Temple of Low Men) and their 4th album (Together Alone) - you have many of my favorites on your list like Jellyfish, Badfinger, Marshall Crenshaw, Big Star, XTC, Todd Rundgren, Cheap Trick, The Knack but I’m intrigued by some of the groups like Blue Ash, and The Bongos. I love this exchange of likes. Thank you for sharing your passion.

"Something/Anything" is a great start for T Rundgren's music. Another is his 2nd album "Runt: The Ballad of..." His first is called "Runt" as well. The one I'm mentioning is the one with the cover where he's seated at a piano with a noose around his neck. It has 2 of his most wonderful songs: "Long Flowing Robe" and "Boat on the Charles" but the whole album's great. "A Wizard, A True Star" is a great listen as well, but this is where his jarring transitions from experimental music to pure pop came into play for the first time. If you're okay with some weirdness, it's a great album. "Sometimes I Don't Know What to Feel," another of his greatest songs, is on that one.

Hi - I just saw this video. Nice job. Here’s an idea for your next Power Pop video: take all the Power Pop artists you mention here and even some you didn’t (hello Dwight Twilley Band and Phil Seymour solo), and combine two of your fave albums by them like you did with your number 1 “album” by Big Star. Pick an album’s worth of your faves from those two albums, and see how your top 10 list looks then! The first artist you mention in the start of this video - Raspberries - is easily my #1. They released 3 albums in less than 2 years that were loaded with both hits and deep track gems, and this feat made them the sole architects of Power Pop IMHO.

Hello fantastic video on Power Pop, which is a genre I don’t know well. As I live in France, I used to read Rolling Stone magazine in the 80s To try to get other inspirations for music. In 89, they published an excellent review on « Stolen Wishes » by the Shoes. I ordered it in the USA as it was not distributed in Europe and loved it. It is a cd and I don’t think it has been pressed on vinyl. I still have it. This band is Power Pop for me. I found two other albums (cheap and no so much collected here) from them : Black Vinyl Shoes and Shoes present Tense. I love the Posies : thanks for presenting the second album I don’t have. Recently, as I was member of a French vinyl club, I received in May 2019 an excellent album that could be in that section « Out Of The Box » by the Young Sinclairs. They are from Virginia, USA. Take care. Bruno

Cool vid, I'm a big Todd Rundgren fan, he is very hard to get along with in the studio. You should own all his albums well into the eighties. I love Big Star, as you already know, The dB's were good friends, I hung out with them a lot. I love the Bongos, Marshall Crenshaw, Badfinger and many others. I do not consider the Cars necessarily power pop. Thanks for another great video. You have impeccable taste. Stay well, young lady. ❤️

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I like Crashes but that first album is my go-to Records disc. Part of me thinks it's over-produced but if I just let the songs work their magic, the production is actually very effective. Records songs give the impression that these guys only ever lived at night & went to lots of swell parties! And you go to that (possibly fictional) world with them, full of romance & intrigue. Almost similar to Bryan Ferry songs in that sense.

Great Vid - I own most of these and agree with you all the way ! Cheap Trick Debut is perfect powerpop/punk. Midwestern Band called the Producers were great back in the 80s. While its not my favorite era of GBV, when they go big on production like Isolation Drills and Do The Collapse there is no one better at power pop than Bob Pollard, IF you can find them a Champaign/Urbana band called the Martyrs - Keep up the fun vids ! Hey Hanna. Fantastic video! You did a great job outlining the genre. I definitely learned about new bands/albums that I want to explore in the future. While talking about the influential bands of the 60s that contributed to the foundation of power pop, it's interesting that you mentioned Nazz & The Move. Those two bands had a huge influence on Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick - again confirming your point about the bands contributing to the rise of power pop as a genre. Speaking of Cheap Trick - I loved your take on Heaven Tonight! I think that album completely solidified their identity. Overall, this was a very enjoyable video (as always). Have a great week! Peace.

Peter Case from Plimsouls and Paul Collins from the Beat were in an earlier band called the Nerves, who put out an ep in 1976, I believe. At that time Peter was on bass and Paul was on drums. Jack Lee was the guitar player. Their most famous song (that Lee wrote) was Hanging On The Telephone, later covered by Blondie. The Nerves have a CD containing the ep and various other recordings on Alive Sound. You should check 'em out. You've got most of the ground covered, by the way. Good work. I should also mention that Shoes actually self-released Black Vinyl Shoes (including cutting the actual record). Present Tense and Tongue Twister were on Electra.

I've just watched your excellent video again and I'm now streaming the Matthew Sweet album you selected. I'm going through albums of the year for another KZbin channel and we've hit the early 90s so I'm returning to power pop (my refuse from grunge which was too noisy for me back then and certainly too noisy now). As something to do while we're enduring the pandemic, I started cataloguing all my albums and rating them out of 10. It turns out to be a much big task than I'd anticipated but I'm really enjoying digging deeper into my collection rather than sticking with my go-to albums. It's really good to get a female perspective on music. Thinking back to my teens to thirties when I spent far, far too much time in "record shops" as they were known, all the regular browsers flicking through the racks were men. The internet has made it much easier to dig deeply into music but it does take the pleasure away from finding something you've been looking for. Stay safe.

I prefer power pop over grunge, too, although I still listen to my grunge albums on occasion. Not as much as I used to, though. Have to be in the mood. Love to rank my albums, too. Now that we all have more time because of COVID, I'm just trying to devote more listening time to each album. Trying to listen to a single album over the course of a week to really absorb and appreciate it. Like the old days! Have fun cataloguing and spending more time with the collection! Be well, and stay tuned for a massive power pop collection update..hopefully by the end of the year. Cheers.

A bit sad because I love finding albums that grow on me, getting better every time I hear it.
