Dunalastair House didn't have it's roof removed on purpose to avoid anything, during the 1960s the lead was stolen from the roof, and back then it wasn't viable to repair it, and there wasn't any grants to apply for neither, so it was just left to rot.

How surprising ! There is a little structure in a village called Pensford a few miles away from where I live in Keynsham. It's right in the middle by the green. A stand alone building about 20 foot square 10 foot high with a solid wooden door, apparently that was a lockup for local cider heads back in the day. 😮😂😂😂❤ A

On the arson note, a lot of listed buildings in Scotland that can't get legally demolished end up being suspiciously torched in order to be allowed to be torn down. It's quite common honestly and incredibly sad.
@GS-lu2zu5 ай бұрын
It's not just Scotland. It's well known throughout the whole of the UK. The same when devs buy old buildings to redevelop into fancy flats and they find asbestos and they have to pay out and remove it all legally. Funny enough, work stops, and some young local teens get paid off to torch the place a few weeks later.

The house’s contents were sold in the mid fifties after the current owner’s grandmother’s death and the house was badly vandalised in the sixties when the lead was stolen from the roof. In those days it was not viable to repair it and no grants were available and it deteriorated very quickly from then on with most removable parts being stolen.

many castles in Scotland and around are missing roofs, hence appearing to have burned down, due to some odd way of taxation back then. Bit like how they used to taxate you according to the amount of windows or chimneys your house had, so people started bricking up windows and combining chimneys into single offshoots, there was a tax loophole that you didn't have to pay taxes for a building if it didn't have a roof, so when these mansion owners went bust and couldn't keep paying taxes for their huge mansion, they took off the roofs and left the mansions like that to weather, maybe in hopes of coming back later in better times to rebuilt them.

another reason for the roof being off is cos it makes the building collapse and rot quicker.. some people who want the land and want to build on a place but the building is protected will instead sabotage it by setting a fire or removing the roof, then when it collapses they can have the right to rebuild from scratch rather than the more costly restoration
