I’ve been riding for 36 years on all kinds of different motorcycles. I recently purchased a 2024 Yamaha XSR 900 at the age of 49. I found this motorcycle to be very satisfying and entertaining. This Yamaha triple has the power and torque where you need it on the street. It’s light, nimble, sounds good and it’s comfortable.

It’s like the old adage; “It’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow.” my current motorcycle has 150 hp and I’m constantly having to reign myself in. It’s too easy to go way too fast. Thank you for promoting the sport of motorcycling by educating new riders.

I've ridden the XSR900, and it was fun, albeit the previous generation, but I always liked the look of the Z900. Had a 2010 Ninja 650 for 14 years and upgraded last November to a 23 Z900 SE and wondered why I didn't do it sooner. Had no idea how much more suitable having 125 hp on tap with loads of torque was for the streets. As you all said, drive around town like it was a Grom, but heavier, or open the throttle and wake up the dragon, lol. I cannot see a need to have more power and torque for what I do with a bike. Perhaps a different style for a different purpose, but not more power.

It really is the peak for the 85-120 horsepower range. Steeping up from that, you're clear up to over 140 hp with the GSX-S1000. Z900 has a butter smooth engine and makes broad torque, more than people think. Below about 8000 rpm it gives up nothing on the category one step up.

Love my CB650R tuned with 95hp and I still have a lot to learn before I am using everything that it has to offer. I just installed a G2 Ergonomics throttle tube with 10% quicker throttle turn and man it’s nice. It really perks up the bike, making it feel more urgent and responsive. Still the same power but just more responsive to hand movements. The stock 90° 1/4 turn throttle felt way too long. Loving it. I’ll make some videos of it soon.

I got an XSR900 for my first street bike. I do have experience racing cars and riding dirt bikes, but this bike still feels pretty dang quick. It is an absolute blast to rip through the gears up to about 100 mph or so. Lots of shifting gears, comfortable, and it looks pretty sweet, too. I'm happy.

I have an XSR900 as well, and I use the power modes a lot, much more than I thought I would. I think power modes is the way to go because you get as big or as small as a bike as you want. Right now, that's not a popular opinion but I think as the older generation retires or dies off power modes and electronic aids will be accepted as making riding more enjoyable and safer.

A big thing to consider is the elevation you ride at. I ride from 6,000 to 12,000 feet and the difference in power from sea level to 12,000 feet is 30%, it makes your mt09 closer in power to a mt07.

Great point! I rented an FZ-07 in Maui and rode up to the top of Mount Haleakala, from sea level to 10k feet in about 45 minutes. The FZ-07 is a fun bike at sea level, but at 10k feet, it's power output was in the 400 range, and it became rather boring. I live at 9000 feet, and mostly ride between 8,000 - 12,000 feet, and my sweet spot is my XSR 900! Like you said, at these elevations, the CP3's power output is pretty comparable to the CP2 in the MT-07 at sea level.

Here in Thailand, my daily rider is a 125cc Honda Wave with 10hp and that is used 90% of the time. When I feel I need something spicier, I go with my 155cc Yamaha "Exciter" with 18hp. When I need to answer the call of the wild, I go with my very spicy Triumph Street Triple 765 RS with 128hp. Each bike fills a sweet spot for me and suits its purpose just fine. I believe mastering a small bike first is the way to go, and that will better prepare you to make use of the full potential of a bigger bike. Even though I've owned liter superbikes with more hp in the past, 128hp is more than enough for any kind of road use I'll ever do.

Middleweights are the best all rounders to me. Your Mt09, my Z900Rs, they're very similar in delivery of power. To a seasoned wrist, middleweights can be spicy enough if you press them a bit but also forgiving enough that a small mistake doesn't become a big one. It's nice to have solid launches and smooth cruisin without having to either go full send on a smaller bike or 600 4 banger or wrestle with a bigger bike. Took going through 7 bikes to find that magic zone and realize what gets the endorphins going.

Probably the realest talk alot of people need to hear. Can confirm as a AMA member / rider for 25+ years, nobody really needs a 1000cc unless your racing on a track or your commute is mainly a highway. 600cc -900cc perfect amount of engine for a intermediate / expert level rider. Just like for dirtbikes 450s are fun but honestly unless your a expert rider youll have more fun on a 125/250cc bike and they are much more friendly to ride. Bigger isn't always better.

Just picked up a '25 Rocket 3 Storm GT. It's perfect! 180hp and 166 torque, but the throttle mapping is very forgiving at low levels, so it cruises nice and smooth, but yes, when you put the hammer on, it's a jack hammer! For a cruiser it's really sporty in the corners, with plenty of lean for street riding. The only thing that isn't pleasurable is the heat it puts out cruising downtown in the summer, that 2.5L engine is water cooled, but still puts out massive heat!

This past April (2024) i traveled from Nashville to Austin and rented a local guy’s XSR 900. I was there to see the MotoGP races Friday-Saturday-Sunday, but on Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday, I rode the XSR around the near side of the Hill Country. I had so much *** FUN!!! That bike, like its MT-09 sibling, IS the sweet spot!!!! the feel, the sound, i even enjoyed it in traffic because it starts to pull HARD at just the right RPM! I own a Suzuki SV650 (peppy, precise, docile, nimble) and a BMW K1300S (missile). While i was at COTA, i test-rode a Triumph Street Triple RS and OMG, what a sorted bike! probably the most sorted bike i’ve ever ridden BUT the Yamaha’s triple is absolutely sublime. It. Is. Fun! To Papa Yam’s point, my BMW K1300S can go faster than i will ever request of it and that’s cool, but it is not fun. it is impressive and scary. Hi! I totally respect your choice! For me it wouldn’t have anything to do with the nationality of the manufacturer. The Speed Triple’s handling and brakes are the best i have ever experienced. the Triumph’s throttle is the most linear i’ve ever felt. To ride in the twisties, which is my favorite thing, i would choose the Triumph BUT the Yamaha triple engine is the most engaging, exciting engine i’ve used. I had fun in stop and go traffic with the XSR just because the engine felt and sounded so good! I think the Yamaha would be more fun day to day and on the way to the twisties as well as being decent if not as good as the street triple in the twisties. but i have not bought either bike. @@graylunsford honestly the Yamaha was the one I thought I was coming home with, the Triumph wasn't even on my radar at the time. A good friend of mine told me before I signed the papers I needed to at least throw a leg over the Triumph, because I was a Triumph guy and didn't know it. Part of the intangibles of why I chose the 765 were little things, like the quality of the paint and the satisfying switch gear. I actually loved the wasp headlights that seem to be pretty polarizing online. And for me, personally, the higher redline and snappier, more sport bike experience from the 765 was more fun to wind out. The Yamaha was an incredible machine, and I'm still considering an MT-10 after riding one at a demo day. My purchase came down to little details and the fact that I like making an engine scream up top, even if I have to flog it a little harder. The noise is half the experience.

That makes sense. I don’t think I mentioned it but on my test ride with the Triumph RS, I was blown away. First of all, instead of taking demo rides in a group with a leader and sweep, Triumph let its demo riders go on their own. We just had to follow a course. Showing that trust was huge and allowed me to really try the bike within the limits of the streets/roads of the course. Almost without trying I did things through curves and stopping that i had never done before - because the bike is SO GOOD! Like, ridiculously good. Absurdly good. Like a scalpel among blunt axes. Your choice and my probable choice make sense if you love to rev it high, like a true sport/race bike. I prefer the pull of mid-range torque, which i would experience a lot on the Yamaha. The XSR does not handle or stop or feel as planted as the STRS, but it does those things well enough to be a main use bike. Oh - i also agree with you about the looks of the Triumph. I think it looks cool. One thing i don’t particularly like on either bike is their instrument screens. Fun talking with you! Happy riding!

My Z900 is my first road bike and I couldn't be more happy with my choice. I did a full Akrapovic system, flash, and dyno tune. Fender delete kit, Rizoma mirrors, Puig windscreen, and sliders. I either lucked out or made a great choice...maybe a bit of both. I can do 200 miles with my Dad on the weekends and still go zip around with the sport bikes too.

Got a Suzuki Bandit 650, 63kW 62N/m (85hp 46ftlb) measured on the dyno and it's an absolute riot. Bit of a chonker at 245kg (540lbs) wet but it's so comfortable for long journeys and hella fun. Dropped 1 tooth on the front and she feels like an actual weapon on the road. The furthest I'd go is a Mk1 B12. Even if it's 1200cc it's still

Man, everytime Yam reviews a CP3 bike it just makes me want to ride my ‘23 XSR900 a little more than I already do. You can just hear how enjoyable it is in his voice. That said, my XSR was my first bike back to riding after not having a bike for almost a decade. And I really did find a helluva sweet spot! Of course, I also want to buy a Ducati Streetfighter! I recently purchased a vintage Honda CG 125.. This thing is so much fun to ride! The engine is exceptionally torquey due to the OHV pushrod config. Only 10 hp and 11 nm torque, but that's the point... Don't have to worry about checking myself on the throttle. Just let it RIP!!

Ive been watching endless videos about the MT09 and have to say im incredibly hyped. I currently own an R7 and have been highly anticipating the R9 for 6 months. Been watching Mt09 videos to learn as much about the MT09 as I can to really learn about the platform, given the fact the R9 will likely follow the trend and be based on the MT09. Regardless of the mixed opinions and snobby-up turned noses, the R7 has been an absolutely thrill to own. Now that my experience has grown substantially and I'm partial towards torque rather than RPMs, I've felt as the R7, while a great bike is missing the cherry on top. I think the cherry will be 200cc and an extra cylinder. Thank you for the videos Yammie. Maybe do a speculation video on the R9 given its cult following. Maybe a wish list on what you want to see, what you think we'll get and its place in the street and GP market.

At the moment I have a Honda XL 1000 Varadero. With 94 horses. The Varadero is like a GS, but for the 1/4 of the price used and with the double reliability. It ticks all my boxes. It’s an excellent commuter bike. It’s very comfortable for long distances. It can keep up with the pace on the German Autobahn and I’m not in eminent danger of losing my drivers license at home in Denmark. The more than 270kg wet weight doesn’t bother me, because I never leave the paved roads. It’s my 3rd bike with that amount of power. It’s fine for the needs I have. I’ve had less powerful bikes, and they were just fine for every day use. But they are too slow for my liking on the Autobahn. You can’t accelerate, to get out of trouble, from 160kmh to 180 in a split second on a fully loaded V-Strom 650. 70 horses are just not enough. More powerful bikes are very expensive to insure and home in Denmark it’s not possible to utilize their potential. If you go over 200kmh you lose the bike and the drivers license. What’s the fun in that?

It's the ultimate indulgence to ham it up on a preposterously powerful motorcycle. It's intoxicating. It gets you into massive trouble in more ways than one and the money tap flows hard when you do. But when you come down from that euphoric high... Car guys simply don't understand.

I had the 21 MT-09 base model and it was a fantastic bike to ride. Got the Akra full exhaust, tuned and Dyno’d and it was crazy fun. I just felt that front end kind of flighty when more aggressive on higher speed turns. Still handles great but after two years I upgraded to the23 MT-10. Got the Leo Vince 3/4 exhaust and tune. Making 160 to the wheel now but still riding my ride. She has more than what I can handle. I like a little more weight and feeling more planted. Still wheelies real easy in first and second. 😀

I had a xz14r with around 210 hp. Now I ride a GL1800 Goldwing with around 125 hp along with a whopping 170nm of torque. The GL1800's power, I get to use, as it delivers it so low in the rev range where you actually use it in real life. Specs sheets are very deceptive in the real world. High hp just means it will go fast but doing that and getting caught, could mean a career change for many.

Comfortable for taller riders (and longer rides), enough power to put a smile on my face, Inline 4 sound, HIGHLY customizable, esthetically pleasing (Kawasaki Green), and RELIABLE! I wanted to like the Z900RS. Aesthetically, I do. I just wish they hadn't neutered the engine from the Z900, added double the weight to the exhaust system, put a crazy tall 6th gear in the transmission (without adjusting the other gears), and designed a font so tiny on those clocks you can't tell exactly what it's doing. Seems like a lot of downers for a lot more cost (over the Z900), to just buy "style" and ergos. I'm more of an RS styling kind of person, but the Z900 performance kind of mind.

Only driven 2 litre bikes. Once in '89 then again in '09. Both times it was crazy and the weight drop in '09 made it hyperspace insane. Not a fan of sport bikes generally, mainly the riding position. Driven plenty of 750's, 600's. Power was much more......less threatening, but still oogles more than needed. Death is so much closer, the merest flick of the wrist, with all liter bikes.

I started riding at the end of the 2000’s, and I’ve ridden a lot of bikes. My daily is a 2021 cbr1000rr. It’ll be two years old next month, and I’ve put almost 19k miles on it. I live in central Arkansas, and I’ve taken it to Dallas and back. It’s absolutely the sweet spot for me. I was planning on getting a cbr600rr when I bought this one, but couldn’t find one. I was coming from a 2006 cbr600rr, and the 1000 is only 2 pounds heavier than it was. It’s tiny, for a liter bike. The way the engine is positioned, and the subframe is positioned, puts it perfectly out of the rider’s triangle, so it’s surprisingly thin. (My wife, also, was surprised about how thin it was, if you know what I mean.) I’m 5’5”, weigh 170 pounds, and they’ll pry my completely unnecessary liter bike out of my cold, dead hands. 😂

I just sold my Concours 1400 because it was too fast. With the flash and the full exhaust I think it was about 160 hp maybe a little more and like 105 foot pounds of torque. Which combine with the fact that that in line 4 is just so silky smooth meant that I was constantly finding myself doing 70 in a 55 because it was only a difference of less than 500 rpm in sixth. I can’t believe Kawasaki did not include cruise control on that bike. I got a speeding ticket 20 years, but I was going to get one on that bike. In my experience right around 100 hp and 50 to 70 foot pounds of torque depending on the weight of the bike is the sweet spot for me. The good news is most manufacturers know this. My Honda 919 rest in peace sad that sweet spot and I will forever be looking for a reasonably priced 2004+ that doesn’t have a dented tank. My V-Strom 1000 also sat pretty close to the sweet spot, and my Yamaha super tenere rides it as well.

For many, fetish usually comes in the way of rational decisions. HP is just one aspect on a motorcycle. Weight, handling, stopping power and reliability are all critical aspects to be considered. Most people don't ever go to a racetrack so they'll never have the chance to push their bikes to the limits, especially considering the skills/experience needed for that. My motorcycle has 110 HP and I have to keep that in check to stay out of trouble. I'd be happy with a lighter and lower seat 90 HP bike. I have had so much fun with 125cc and 350cc bikes with much lower HP. But that's just me of course. Cheers.

I've been up and down on horsepower. Lots of highway travel, with regular commute and occasional twisty fun. so... Yammie's sweet spot is about right for me. sv650 is great in twisties and mostly ok in commute but... if you want to overtake on highway, you need torque to accelerate from 50 ti 80 to get around a few banked vehicles. high revving feels like you are flogging the bike,. a bandit is a lot of fun almost every day. a gsx-s1000 gt now because I want a bit of weather protection. it goes as fast as you need it to. torque everywhere and you dont need to push it up near red-line. I cam imagine the mt09 being sweet. have fun

I've had a Z1000 and my current Z900 for a total of 10 years. You are right, 120 hp is the magic number for an all-in-one motorcycle. I'm gonna keep it for another 2-3 years and will probably trade it in for a decent electric bike like the Zero DSR ZF 14.4 for daily commuting and anything else in between. Australia is 2 to 4 years behind other developed countries in term of EV charging infrastructure. So hopefully by then, I could use an electric bike for longer trips out of town and don't have to worry about range anxiety.

I've only been riding for 3 or so years, I've been fortunate enough to be on a wide variety of sport motorcycles. Ranging from Duke 390 and Ninja 400 all the way up to ZX14R and R1 with a ton of different motorcycles in between. I definitely prefer the top end liter bikes and fast boi bikes. Yes the ergos aren't the best, but I very much enjoy them regardless. Commuting to work going to meet up with friends or just going out on rides by myself or with friends. I've had that one dunning kruger effect event happen that made me realize just how bad i was a riding and make me entirely reconsider the way i rode. And even then i definitely prefer these big power bikes. I will say, the FZ-07 that i have and an MT-09 that i once rode are absolutely phenomenal bikes. love them to high heaven. Just a bit of an issue when it comes to wet weather since as of right now a motorcycle is my only vehicle. rain on a naked bike isn't great. Given it's not great in general on a bike but it's a bit easier to handle when you have at least some form of rain protection in the form of fairings and a wind screen. Plus all the extra power I have. The other thing that hits my sweet spot is the lack of tech on a bike that I own. I currently own a 16' FZ-07 and an 05' R1. Neither of which have any tech or anything. It feels so much better than the bikes I've ridden with all the tech packages, TC, and ABS and even rider modes. Yes in poor road or weather conditions, it's very helpful to have those things, but even then I 100% prefer 0 tech on a bike that I own.

I hate the sugomi styling and most modern aesthetics, that insectoid/transformer look. So, I'm now on a Z900RS. And you know what? It does everything really well and looks fantastic. The engine is amazing in the way that Kawa makes hard hitting engines. Sound is fantastic and despite its weight, handles pretty decently for what it is. A few mods: Arka headers, KN filter, bored out airbox, ECU flash, Ohlins Shock, Brembo master cylinder, Angel GT tires... and now its a real sleeper, and boy does it sound good now! and I'm still comfortable!
