My right arm was paralyzed from Shingles for almost a year.I put a high quality knob on the steering wheel and drove left handed many times to the VA Hospital going right through Atlanta Georgia.You can safely operate a vehicle if you need to.

Yes it’s possible to operate a vehicle one handed but you need adaptations and permissions. Unlikely to adapt a car just for 6 weeks. My advice around driving applies to the UK.

The clavicle is one of the most commonly broken bones in the upper limb so spotting old fractures in the clavicle on an X-ray is common. I guess you would then have to ask is that finding relevant. Is the clavicle painful? Is that fracture healed (United) or not? To know if that’s anything to worry about.

Just got the 3 week xray this friday. Doctor said the xrays were great and I am way ahead in healing. He said I will most definitely be able to play contact sports at 6 weeks, but I'll probably have a 15% higher chance of breaking it. I am doing non operative recovery, and my bones were still touching when broke, just tented. I have full ROM with no pain and can sleep on my broken collarbone side with no pain or discomfort. I just wanted to know If I was ahead in recovery and if this is normal.

It’s hard to say definitively as I haven’t examined you or seen your X-ray but your lack of pain is positive. When we quote healing times and recovery rates they are averages. Some people will heal quicker or slower than others.

I broke mine 15 years ago and they said no surgery. Now I have nerve pain throughout neck, arms and hands. I had to fly the next day after the break, and I regret not having proper care and thorough analysis of the need for surgery. I can't type this message without discomfort. @@TK-hg8pf Unfortunately the doc made an incorrect call and I did end up needing surgery after visiting a dedicated orthopedic due to the sheer displacement. After the surgery I was out of the sling in 2 months and after 5-6 I was mostly back to normal. To this day, the only effects I have are that I cannot sleep on that side of the body and certain exercises make it ache more than usual (both of these effects are slowly improving though). I hope your case ends up being more favorable

Been 9 months since I obliterated my collar bone, broken in multiple spots and have a titanium rod and 6 screws in there and my strength has progressively gotten way weaker and my labrum/deltoid feels like there’s a tear in it. If the break is healed it will be able to take weight yes. But if you have a lump and you haven’t had an injury you should get it checked with at least an X-ray.

If you’re in a sling there are some exercises you can do in a sling on our channel. But usually physio starts when the sling is removed.

Clavicle fractures usually heal within 6-12 weeks. Once it’s healed on X-ray you can return to sport and gym but will need to build back your strength and fitness.

By 6 weeks the fracture has started healing and in simple fractures it may already be healed. Most healing is complete by 12 weeks (3 months). Usually we go on X-ray appearances and clinical findings to determine when to resume loading and sports. So it’s best to check with your doctor.

Mine is a very tricky case of a non union mid shaft fracture sustained from a horse riding accident 3 years ago. Originally plated with artificial graft but then 8 months later the plate fractured so had to have another op with bigger plate and hip bone graft, fast forward 2 years and the plate broke again, X-ray showed that just 1/2 cm on one side had not healed, suspected infection so they removed the plate 3 weeks ago and took samples to be tested it turns out i did have an infection so they are treating me with 6 weeks antibiotics with a watch and see what happens. I have been given the option to either have it re plated if they can kill the infection or leave as a non union. I have 95% full range of motion i can only slightly feel something when i reach forward with my hand to grab something I have no pain otherwise and although i have a bump its no worse than when the plate was there as I could feel and see that also. Im inclined to leave well alone as feels really good even 3 weeks post op but its a difficult decision. Not sure I'm convinced a 4th operation on the same bone that has already been infected is the best choice. Obviously i will be horse riding again as thats my life. Just wish it would have healed in the first instance. Do you have any patients who live with a non union and do they cope?

I’ve seen a few who live with non-unions. Sounds like you’ve been through the wars with this. If it’s not too problematic maybe leave it for a bit. See how it impacts life and then decide. At this long as infection is not an issue there’s no rush.

So it is unusual for the shoulder to go stiff after a clavicle fracture. The doctor should review the shoulder to make sure there isn’t another cause for stiffness and physiotherapy is probably needed.

Fractures are very painful initially and muscles spasm to try to prevent you from moving to protect the bones. So pain right after a fracture is not uncommon. As a rule of thumb if a fracture is undisplaced from the start it’s unlikely to shift with just gentle movement. But follow the advice of your doctors.

Surgery doesn’t make clavicle fractures heal any faster. The bone heals at the same rate either way. Typical healing time is between 6 and 12 weeks.

Yes we can fix at most points but we would have to turn back on the biology in the bone to get to it heal.

It could be that the fracture has not healed yet. Would be wise to see your doctor for a review and another X-ray.

@@calebmumo1303 most clavicle fracture pain should start settling after the first couple weeks and the bone usually heals within 6-12 weeks. So if you’re still in severe pain get it checked.

Mine is broken 5 days ago and doctor suggest not to do surgery i consultant with 4 doctors and they all say the same they say it will heal with time without any kind of surgery, surgery is not required But i can see a bump on my left side of calavicle what should i do? Please suggest me.

Almost all clavicle fractures will have a bump. That’s normal. Very few need surgery. 85% will heal on their own.

If the fracture has healed with a bump then the surgery would be to re break the bone and try to fix it with a plate and screws. That would replace the bump with a scar and a plate. This type of surgery also has higher risks that just fixing a fresh fracture. So I often ask patients to think really hard about how much the bump is actually bothering them.

@@takeoffantt9865 the reason for the higher risk is that firstly the scarring from fracture healing can tether nerves and blood vessels so it’s more likely to injure them. Secondly to cut the bone you have to use a saw which we don’t use when we’re fixing a fracture. Using a saw in a delicate area has that increased risk.

I broke mine last night cuz of my sister. The doctors gave me a sling and they said i have to have it for about 4-6 weeks before i can take it off and start doing things with my arm again and now i have a bump thats gonna be there for YEARS 😢😢😢

My son is 16 weeks post healing after a collarbone malunion fracture. No surgery required as per direction of an orthopaedic surgeon. He hears a clikcing sound. Is that common/normal?

It could be scar tissue that’s causing the clicking sensation. Worst case it could be that the fracture hasn’t yet healed. If you are concerned it would recommend having it checked.

@@ShoulderLondon his last x-ray was on January 28th. The doctor says he has full range of motion and does not need to come in for any further x-rays unless he feels pain. He has no pain just the clicking sound. Thanks for your advice.

Hi Doc. I'm From Philippines .I NEED YOUR 2nd Opinion.. but thank you in Advance Doc.. My father has a Fractured In MIDDLE THIRD CLAVICLE (Collar bone) and sad to say Due to Motorcycle accident. Question? Is it req to due to operation asap if a patient broke collar bone or maybe its up to you if you choose to take medicines or Require ASAP of operations... What's Your advice doc..
