Why is Ash’s Pikachu so strong? Why is Ash’s Pikachu so weak? What is up with Ash’s Pikachu!? You would think Pikachu’s level would be maxed out by now, but it somehow still manages to lose to Pokémon who seem to be either ridiculously under levelled or have close to nowhere near as much experience. Well, I’m going to talk about a few theories that might just explain why Pikachu’s power seems so inconsistent.

What about the Ho-oh theory, which basically states that when Ash saw Ho-oh at the end of the first episode, it gave him eternal happiness as it says in the Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire dex entries. This "Eternal Happiness" theory goes on to suggest that Ash's effective wish was to go on an adventure with Pikachu, and it didn't let him fall into a Saitama situation with Pikachu getting too powerful. Ergo, the level reset is simply part of Ash's eternal happiness, as it lets him have the joy of battling opponents without being so strong that the fight isn't enjoyable.

To be honest, starter Pokemon aren't always level 5 in the anime. Remember in Hoenn when Ash and Max had to take care of the starter trio but Torchic evolved into Combusken after beating the other unevolved starters? Yeah. So for all I know that Snivy could have been level 98 and was holding an ever stone this entire time and all Trip did was find two rare candies

It may be a pet goldfish type scenario. You know, kid is careless, cheap carnival goldfish dies, mom replaces fish before kid notices. What if Pikachu getting sick is just because Ash is careless? Pikachu dies, Pokemon center contacts mom, mom sends new Pikachu to keep from crushing her baby's spirit. Professor Oak is in on it too, training the replacements so nobody notices a change in personality or failure to recognize old friends.

The problem is, sometimes, Pikachu gets better on the field. His first episode in Hoenn was the continuation of Pikachu's sickness, and, suprise suprise, TEAM ROCKET COMES IN TO TRY TO STEAL YER POKEMANZ! Here is a theory for Ash's Pikachu: When Ash sends a lv100 pikachu against a lv5 snivy, you would expect pikachu to win, because pikachu is 95 levels higher than snivy, however, that isnt the case. Instead, when Ash goes in a battle with a trainer, all pokémon are set to lv50, like how people do online battles in the real world. Meaning, Ash's pikachu and Trip's snivy are actually lv50 each. That is why pikachu didn't knock out snivy, but the other way around. Also the reason why pikachu could take down legendary pokémon. Also why pikachu lost to a bellsprout. Did I blow any minds yet?

My theory: Ash's Pikachu is the victim of Ash seeing Ho-Oh in episode 1. Seeing a Ho-Oh is said to give the person eternal happiness. Ash's idea of eternal happiness means traveling the world and challenging, but not outright winning, the Pokemon League since if he becomes a Pokemon Master his journey is over. So every time Ash fails, he leaves behind most of his Pokemon in Oak's lab and travels to the next region to begin his adventure anew. Always traveling, always getting new Pokemon and making new friends and always having fun in the chase. Only problem is Ash insists on taking Pikachu with him, so Ho-Oh somehow makes Pikachu's power reset when Ash enters a new region so Ash's Pikachu doesn't one shot everything and take the fun and challenge out of Ash's adventures.

My theory about pikachu's fluctuating capabilities has to do with possible health problems. Pikachu could well have an incurable health condition (something similar to fibromyalgia or MS) that causes him to have good days and then really really crappy days. There are health issues that can make you literally unable to see to your daily needs one day then you seem pretty much fine the next. If pikachu has something like that then it could easily explain why he can own ass one day then get steam rolled himself the next, along with why he seems to be much more susceptible to illness than other pokemon seem to be. After all, he has needed care due to fever a good number of times in the anime while it very rarely happens to any other pokemon.

Miss Amanda's world I don't really know with Misty's Psyduck, he's always just come off as being an oddball to me. It is possible he has a neurological issue that makes his headaches worse than normal which could also affect coordination (he is unusually clumsy after all) and make swimming more difficult for him but I haven't really thought about it a whole lot. He's just always come off as an adorable goofball to me.

My theory why Pikachu learnt or should i say Invented Volt Tackle is due to it performing Quick Attack X amount of times. Basically Ash's Pikachu is the Don Primeo of knowing Volt Tackle. Pikachu is extremely powerful (And probably level 100 or damn close) As to his power "Fluctuations" I have a possible senario. Living things (I dont mean ACTUAL plants) use extremely small amounts of electricity to move about. Now Pikachu is essentially a very big Battery. If Pikachu wen't into his ball he would conserve his energy but because he refuses to he is constantly draining power and only really fully recharges at poke centers. As for the getting ill part, Well old fashioned batteries would get worse if you over charged them, Pikachu's body can deal with other pokemons electric attacks (It doesn't make him sick) And slow charging electric (Like when Ash powered up Pikachue to beat Brock witch also upped Pikachu's power capacity making his attacks hit much harder) However sudden high voltage from man made generators ect basically overload and short Pikachu out (making him Ill) And when he recovers his power capacity is reset NOT his level. He still know's all his moves but doesn't pack enough punch upon a new region to deliver. (It takes half the season for Pikachu to get back to full Toasting ability) Reason being if you look at Ash's other pokemon (Charizard in perticular) His power NEVER wanes from appearance to appearance. And Pikachu always seem's to have a VERY large amount of clout just after a poke centre visit (Even just being in its proximity seems to do this) However Pikachu always starts to dip in power after a short while without a pokecentre visit.

if i remember the episode correctly, those boys spitting out pokemon game facts had a unique training regiment that involved what we know as the pokemon games acting as simulators in the anime world, and the pokemon they used were facility property. well trained, but not experienced in trainer pokemon communication. if i also remember correctly, when ash and friends show up, they pwn the students and "teach" that battles in their world are less about "levels, moves and type advantages" as the games would have us believe but more about trainer pokemon trust, respect, and imagination. to me, the episode was more of a game cameo, showing that levels may still not exist, but the students use the label of levels which is abstract in their world to judge a pokemon's strength instead of trainer bonds, innovative ideas, and true battle experience. Proof of leveling working differently can be seen multiple times throughout the anime's history. in the sinnoh region when battling the fighting type gym leader, buizel "levels up" and learns a new move while an opposing pokemon is still standing. Other instances include pokemon evolving in battle as either a mind trick or as pokemon's drive to succeed. in both events, it would not be plausible in game. you dont gain experience or level up until an opposing pokemon is defeated, preventing a pokemon from learning a new move while an opposing pokemon is out, only learning it between pokemon. evolution cannot happen mid battle in game, even if you level up to the appropriate level mid battle. the evolution doesnt start until the entire battle has finished.

My theory on ashes pikachu is that the level resets, but not because of the electricity. All pokemon have to reset their level when they go to a new region, this prevents a trainer from sweeping through all the regions leagues with a team of level 100 pokemon. This is possible because the pokemon trainers battle with are not actually real pokemon. Pokeballs do not store animals, they store data. When you catch a pokemon with a pokeball what actually happens is the pokeball scans the pokemon and makes a copy of it, personality and all. When the catch fails it is because the pokemon did not stay in the ball long enough for the scan to be complete, and this broke the ball. Ultra balls and such have a better chance of holding the pokemon longer giving the scan more time to complete. This is why organizations like PETA don't flip their shit about pokemon battles, in essence these kids are fighting with robots. AI robots that can learn things, but still robots. It also explains why you can store pokemon in PC, and why you need a special machine to trade pokemon. The pokeball is programmed to you, and you keep your same pokeball. The data is transferred. Because pokemon data can be messed with at customs they reset every pokemon to level 5 but leave their moveset alone because thunder from a level 5 pikachu is still not gonna be super powerful. And TMs are expensive, and trainers would whine and... too much hassle. That's my theory. ^_^

Also to support the lvl reset theory... Maybe because pikachu is electrocuted he "wastes" energy. Like a car battery. If its running it wont use much electricity, but if you use electricity when its off it runs out faster. An in game example is when a pokemon uses for example a move like surf in battle it calls a tsunami, but in the field it lets you cross water. So since pikachu basicly cant use no field moves when he isnt battleing he wastes his power... I feel as if i put something that makes no sense but you get what i mean. Also its only ONE region of ONE country that can have SEVERAL regions. Technically America has 50 regions. The real world has 204 countries(I think) If each country had 5 regions with 500+ registered trainers each it would be very hard to keep track of any one person unless they really stood out or you really made an effort to track them. 1020 * 500= 500,000 plus trainers. You could finish in the top 16 each year and only be in the top 20,000 worldwide.

I think that you're right ! It will be such a pain to see how pikachu is running circles all over his opponents ! BUT My theory about why Pikachu losts in every new region is because he's let's say an animal for the Pokemon world ,right ? So, just like an animal who changes its natural habitat it's getting confused and it's triyng to get used to the new place. Take for example one fly in the room - At first It will not stop to bang it;s head on the window;s glass, just by trying to escape and run away. And by the time goes by ,the fly stops triyng to escape but learns where to hide until you put some food on the table or just open the window for the fly to fly away, right ?! So my theory is that Pikachu does NOT resets his levels, but when an pokemon (an animal) changes his habitat- in this case Pikachu goes away from Kanto, the pokemon is not prepared for the new challenges and new predators that this new habitat (region) has (It will be too hard for one Polar Bear to live in the desert ,right?) And may be that's why Pikachu is sick in the beginning of some new journey because of the nature changes. Also Charizard ! Why he's so strong against Battle frontier's Articuno in the Kanto region ? Two pokemon from the same region,and Charizard has type -advantage! Same against Iris's Dragonite - Pokemon from the same region. Just natural chemistry ! And as the episodes go by... Charizard has to face Dusclops ,a Hoenn region pokemon who's used to the Kanto climat and Kanto pokemon. And Charizard experiences the same type of lose as Pikachu's lost to Snivy and He's own lost in the battle against Blaziken in the Jotho league battles where Charizard has the type-advantage but only 2 or 3 battles in Jotho, while Blaziken ran all over the Jotho region's gym leaders. Same goes as Donphan's lost to Dusknoir and then a fucking Gible won against that SAME DUSKNOIR !!! Or remmember the time WHEN GROVYLE EVOLVED INTO SCEPTILE IN KANTO and lost all of its moves... He then get used to Kanto and became POWERHOUSE !!! Enough with the examples ! Back to the case ! So that's my theaory about Pikachu. He goes to another region ,he is not ready for the new pokemon and "nature" there, then he's getting used to it and becomes A BEAST !!! There was no FRICKING level reset!!!! So It was still a level 100 Pikachu lost to a level 5 above that never Battled before!!

It could be that electric attacks might be different in each region. The electric-type Pokemon of each region probably evolved (like, actual Darwinian Evolution) to use electricity independently of the other regions (like how birds and bats both evolved to fly independently, rather than being related-a concept in Evolutionary Biology called “Convergent Evolution”). It’s possible that each region’s electric-type Pokémon evolved to generate slightly different amperages, voltages, and wattages of electricity; all factors which Pikachu, being a creature so dependent on electricity, would probably be very sensitive to changes in. Therefore, each region may ‘throw him for a loop,’ so to speak, requiring him to become accustomed to battle in each region.
