Hey Wade! Love your videos! I really need help from someone who knows what they are talking about LOL I have trouble with my scent throw in my wax melts - mainly CT! Is there anything that is recommended to get a really good CT too? I’m using a mic of 6006/4625. Thanks!
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
Yah.. neither of those two are the best for CT. But good with HT. The best CT usually comes from softer waxes like coconut and soy. But neither of those make th best melts. Its definitely a conundrum. What % of FO are you using again? You could also try clpsing your melts sooner as they cool which sort of helps to "bake in" the fragrwnce into the container more. But its really hard to do that without making a mess. So not while liquid but as its starting to firm up. Other than that.... trying other waxes is really only other good option. :/

Black Tie Barn Candle Co. I’ve tried 6, 8, 10, & 12% FO just to see if I can tell a difference. I just ordered Golden Wax for Tarts (I think it’s also called 494) from Candlescience yesterday. So hopefully that will be different 😩😩

@@heathersmith3953 do you have bow average sense of smell? Many people struggle with scents whereas some people are super sensitive. I dont think your GW is going to help you much overa Their waxes aren't the best with HT. They are good with CT, but usually not HT. So its a trade off. :/ I would give several away free and ask for feedback. Make rating cards and ask them to rate 1-5 on a few different factors (like CT, HT, overall, etc)

I've never added vybar to my wax, so I found this quite interesting. I use Coconut wax so I've never looked to see if it even has Vybar in it, I use Coconut 83. I guess I'll look, but I'm never hadan issue with fragrance retention or cold/hot throw. I love Coconut wax for this reason.

Hey Wayne, Coconut wax generally would not already have vybar in it unless its a coconut wax blend (then it may). You would want to ask your supplier. I would be 95% confident is does not, though.

Hey Wade! Thank you for the excellent education on the business of making candles. I watched a ton of your videos BEFORE making my first candle last Saturday. So here is what I discovered about Vybar 260. I've been experimenting with my soy blend wax and discovered something interesting. All my initial test candles had a LOT of frosting. I wasn't so bothered by it as it looked interesting to me. Then I showed my very first test candles to my family. They weren't down with the look of the frosting on the candles. Hmmm... THEN yesterday, I decided to perform 3 more tests. I took my formulation and in one of my 2 oz test candles, I put a small amount of Vybar (less than 1/16 tsp) and eliminated Vybar from the other 2 tests. The formulations and weight of candles were otherwise identical. And no, Vybar wasn't incorporated into the wax I purchased. And yes, I saw a bunch of info about not adding too much Vybar because it can bind up the fragrance...so I was really careful. My results: The candle WITH Vybar had frosting on the top and on the sides just like my first test candles. Guess what, NO FROSTING on the 2 candles without Vybar! They looked beautiful! Zero frosting! Great depth in color, smooth tops, and no cracks or holes Perfect! Even the scent was stronger. Guess my soy blend wax doesn't like Vybar. 😞 You are my inspiration! I watch many other videos but you by far, provide the best information. Some other presenters offer wack information. I discovered not everyone should be teaching us newbies how to make candles. ;-)
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn Жыл бұрын
No problem at all and thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the truth is vybar can have different impacts or none at all depending on the wax. Even eliminating vybar from the conversation completely.... frosting doesn't happen on all. Or when it shows up varies. You can make a batch of 20 candles. 10 may get it in a week, another 5 a month later. And the other 5..... three months later. Lol

It certainly could. Vybar could potentially help in 2 ways. 1) traps in FO a bit better and 2) increases melt point of the wax by up to s couple degrees. You'd just have to test though. If using a super soft wax it might not make enough of a difference to notice

@BlackTieBarn

It definitely could. There are 3 main vybars. Vybar 260 for waxes with a melt point under roughly 130 I believe. Vybar 130 for waxes with melt point over 130ish And vybar 343 which is meant to KEEP the mottling effect as many want to keep the mottling effect. Yes you can. It may or may not help with the HT through. You'll just need to test. Just know, adding vybar will make the wax a tad harder and not adhere to the jars quite as well. Vybar is a hardene. But if you find it helps with the HT, than I think that is more important every day of the week.

Hi Wade, I saw another KZbinr today mention that using vybar increases the HT of a candle; it was mentioned but not explained. I almost bought it today, but after watching your video and hearing your explanation I think I won’t now and save my coins as you know it’s already really expensive. I’m still testing and really like my Soy and Coconut wax blend it has a good scent throw but I wish it was stronger. The vessels that I use do not have a lid and I haven’t been able to find a suitable one yet. Do lids really make a big difference? If not vybar then what would you recommend for getting the strongest CT and HT. Sorry, I know I’ve asked you about 4 different questions here 🤦🏾‍♀️ Thank you in advance 🙏🏾
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Adele. So.... vybar CAAAN help sometimes with HT but it's not its purpose and it's hit and miss. Since you saw my video I won't go into all the details again. But I've had it help occasionally (at least I thought I did). But most of the time I detected no different in HT. It will affect other things though, some in a negative way. Like jar adhesion since it hardens your wax a bit. It may be worth a shot to try... I just wouldn't get your hopes up too much until you do. If you decide to, I wouldn't use more than 1/2 tap per pound. Basically 2grams per pound. But probably safe up to 3grams. Also, vybar was really meant for paraffin wax so that it could hold oil better. Hard to see or know if it does much for soy or apricot or coconut waxes As far as other things thst might help. It's tough with some waxes. Without paraffin, it's hard to ensure great HT. Paraffin is king in that regard. Your best option is more expensive higher quality oils. But those get pricey. :/ Or, only using oils that seem to work well snd throw well in your wax. That, and longer cure times.

Hi, when you add Vybar do you need to up your percentage as well? For instance if I test this in soy 464 I usually use 9% FO a should I use 12% with vybar added?
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
I may not be understanding your question. But, percentages don't change. They are relative to changes in volume. 9% is 9% regardless. If you use 9% in your normal batch of say 1lb of wax then you would still use 9% in a larger batch of 3lbs. Which means the amount of FO would be higher because 9% of 3 pounds is more than 9% of 1 pound. I'm not sure if that is what your asking. Or, if you are asking if you use more FO just because you add vybar? Then no... no need. You can if you want but no, adding vybar doesn't mean you need to add more FO. I would personally never use more FO then you normal would need anyway. I have no idea if this helps. 😬

I was going to buy vybar today but just saw this video and I’m thinking, no. 🤔 Looking to gain a better HT with 464 but likely going to go with adding paraffin. Unless that’s a no, too. Do you have a video on that? Mixing 464 with paraffin? I’m losing my mind.. LOL
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
Mixing with paraffin will give you better HT results than vybar would. Vybar can help a touch but that isn't its main purpose. Vybar gives the ability to hold more FO but 46r already holds plenty. 464 just isn't a great wax for HT, so it's an uphill battle. Lol

Do the same principles of Vybar apply to Stearic Acid?
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure. Basically vybar is a replacement for stearic acid for use in candle making. But the effect that stearic had on soap may differ than that of vybar in candles

Hiiii, I am having troubles with my hot throw, I am using paraffin mix with palm wax. I can receive any advice you can give me, If I add vyber it could help me with the HT?
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
High, it could but it isn't its real intention. Make sure you use vybar 130 (its meant for higher melt point waxes like palm or hard paraffin. You wouldn't want to use vybar 260 most like. Also, palm can be tough to wick. So keep working on wicking and you may see improvement with HT. Do you know what paraffin you are using? There are hundreds of kinds. Also, are you oils quality? Where do you buy them if you don't mind me asking. If they are from a reputable supplier, you shouldn't have an issues.

I’ve been told vybar in 464 helps with the creators and ugly, rough tops but I didn’t hear you confirm that in this video. Did you forget to mention that or is my info bad?
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
It really isn't it purpose and it is I consistent on helping with surface flaws. Yes, it can help..... but its not 100%. The other reason I didn't mention specifially 464 is becaus 364 has additives already and most suppliers do not recommend using vybar with 464. As I don't use 464 myself I couldn't speak to that and didn't want to speculate. I try to give info on things I'm familiar with and can confident speak about so that I don't intentionally lead anyone astray. So, it's not that I forgot... just impossible to cover every subtopic in every video. I was focused mostly on the main purposes of vybar. :) But, no.... I wouldn't day your info is bad. Just that to test for yourself. Many candle makers have entirely different experiences across the board whether it's waxes oils, wicks, or additives. This is one of those topics that isn't clear cut. It may help you some, it may not. When I get a chance to test this myself, I will though for sure. :)

At what point in the process do I add the Viber? Is it at 180° or less?
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn Жыл бұрын
Each vybar type has a melt point so you'd want to add hotter than that. But the hotter you add it the easier it is to blend in. Vybar 260 should be added above 125 minimum and 103 above 140 minimum.... but I'd be adding both hotter if possible before you add FO as well. 160-190 range

We use soy 464 wax and our wondering if maybe we need to switch or what can we do to get a better hot throw.. what is the best way to choose a wick? Maybe we are using the wrong ones.. any advice you can offer would be great thank you..
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa, sorry for the late reply. I occasionally miss a comment here and there. I just did a 2 part mini series on 464 you may want to check out. The short answer is 464 is very dependent on the FOs you select. They need to work together well which you have to test for. HT is hit or miss with 464. Best way to choose a wick is through testing as well. Start with any basic recommendations you find on wick charts and adjust. I have a couple videos on testing wicks as well you can watch if you want. As far as switching waxes, that is up to you. All waxes have Pros and Cons. Some have great HT but other annoying issues. And visa versa.

@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 жыл бұрын
@@tawanalm I typically use .05 - 1% at most per pound. But remember to work in grams for vybar since its such a small amount. One way to do this is convert your wax amount to grams first. In your case 8oz of wax equals about 226g, Then take somewhere between .05 and 1% of that. 1% would be about 2.2grams of vybar. I would probably go with about 1.6g of vybar. If this helps, I use about 3grams per pound. I dont work in amounts smaller than a pound but its just a math problem after that. :)
