I'm 74 and have seen a lot of preachers including my Dad. Our church hasn't had a real preacher for 15 years. We got a new pastor 3 weeks ago. Very nice man, but his first two sermons were short, maybe 13 minutes, but he used a text and did a pretty good job in these short sermons, explaining the text without a lot of filler fluff and in our Bible study group everyone could actually remember what the sermon was about. So I give him a B- so far. One ministry I support financially is for tuition assistance for men studying for the ministry. In the long run our Bible study group yesterday, we spent 1-1/2 hours studying the 1st chapter of James. We have two study Bibles which we look to for deeper explanations. Whether a sermon is 13 minutes or 30 minutes, it isn't enough for the week for 14 of us but following Christ deserves group study and personal studies at home. People who only come to church half the time and no outside studies won't benefit from 30 sermons a year. Too many people pass on actual Bible study. Thanks for your teaching.

That's a good point that people can often be so unwilling to cause offence, that they allow someone to become a Christian leader who shouldn't really have that role. More willingness to offend when it is necessary is sometimes needed.

Sadly, this is true, you must hear the word, this is how we grow in the gospel. Most important way to determine a Christain church to attend, is to make sure the bible is on the pulpit and that they have a biblical Pastor to preach the gospel. Thank you, I will pray for my wonderful preacher, a great reminder!

In a nutshell .... There's more time spent on teaching people don't need to do anything, and thereby spread the lack of responsibility of a person to accept HIS commandments and do them. Romans 2:13 - For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. If someone hears and does not do they are as a seed planted that dies not of itself, but literally dies and does not grow to produce fruit ... Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Why did Jesus curse the fig tree ... no fruit ... The good soil produces 30, 60, sometimes 100 fold, but the roadside seed (the seed is The Word Luke 8:11) is snatched by the enemy ... dead ... The rocky place seed springs up but withers .... dead ... the thorns and thistles seed is choked out .... dead ... because clubbing, football, job, or nice toys are more important than producing the fruit of the seed (Luke 8:11) ... fruit bearing seed after like kind Gen 1:11 ....

Proud preachers preach without grace, which God gives to the humble. Crass "bible societies" throw out most singular pronouns (thee, thou, thy, thine) because certain ones don't like them, and alter Scripture other ways. Paul's preaching 'was not with enticing words of man's wisdom' (philosophical, etc) nor was it foolish (1Cor.1:17-21, 2:1-4). Preaching today has no 'power' either, to humble proud sinners, that know not what 'sin' is. One preacher, before a packed out audience, said in passing: "I can't remember the last time that I sinned"...appalling. Worst of all, are modern translations that water-down the Truth, and patronize people in their 'ignorance' (Eph.2:18, Jn.2:25). That's just the tip of the iceberg...there's also "the frozen chosen" that don't know that the 'world' is 'the field' where the wheat and tares grow together until the 'harvest'.
