There's no reason to say that PPI or resolution are better or worse than one another. It depends on the use. According to the retina calculator, I have to sit 94cm from my 1080p display to achieve retina. If I had a 4K monitor with the same PPI, I'd have to sit the same distance from the screen to achieve retina, but the picture would be much larger. If I had a 4K monitor of the same size, retina would be achieved much closer to the screen, but increasing my distance from the screen would have exponentially greater diminishing returns to my eyes. So, in my case, I like to relax in my chair with a controller and I usually sit about that distance anyway. With a 4K monitor with the same PPI, I'd get a much better gaming experience at that distance because of the larger screen. However, at that distance, a 4K monitor of the same size would yield no benefit to me. It depends on the use. If you sit close, maybe higher PPI is better. If you sit further back, higher PPI won't be as important as overall resolution and screen in most cases.

Given a specific Pixel density one can freely talk about screen sizes If you are talking about monitors (say), you can first decide the density you want, and then look at the screen sizes, rather than looking at the resolution and judging the display quality. Just because 720p is outdated doesn't mean a display with 720p res is bad, it might look better than 1080p, provided the screen isn't too big Viewing distance is another thing (of course it matters)

Everything is right, except the fact the gaming in higher resolutions will actually result in higher quality overall, like less aliasing and more detailed textures. I'm talking about rendering detail, not only pixel density. Even using the same 1080p monitor, rendering a game at 4k resolution scaled down to 1080p (I dont have 4k monitor) will look much more detailed. It's not all about pixel density and sitting distance ratio. But that depends on the game too (though even old games like Titan Quest look significantly better on 4k downscaled to 1080p than just 1080p).

I've seen that distance chart numerous times. I have heard the argument that 4k only works on big TV's. All that is all just bench racing, i.e. it's worthless till you actually look at the TV. To get a good idea what 4k looks like next to a 1080p TV go to your local retailer (higher end is preferable like Best Buy or H. H. Greg, etc.) & take a look at their TV wall. They will probably have 1080p's right next to some 4k's with some of the 4k's on the same input as the 1080p's. Stand 15-20' away & see if you can tell the difference. I bet you can. Even in your own video at 5:20 you are saying the 2 screens should look identical. I can back up from my monitor to 4-5' & the 2160 side STILL looks better. That said, one of the other commenters is correct that the color enhancement & motion control is arguably more important to overall picture quality than resolution. The only problem with this is none of the high end manufactures (Sony, Samsung, etc.) are putting their top technology in ANY 1080p TV's, ONLY in their 4k TV's (LG does offer a 1080p 55" OLED TV that is the so far beyond other 1080p's it's ridiculous, but is also priced higher than most all 4k's of the same size :/ ). If you don't believe me, while your at your local retailer looking at the resolution difference, ask the salesman if they have an HDR vs. non-HDR demo (p.s. don't do this if you bought a non-HDR 4k last year, you'll kick yourself... ;) ).

It's very noticeable when I turn my games to 1080p on my 28 inch 4K Asus monitor. I play fairly close to the screen usually about a foot to a foot and a half. I also really notice the difference in quality in your GTAV clips side by side when watching your video in 1 quarter of my screen (for 1 to 1 pixel ratio at 157 pixels per inch) The best thing about 4k though is actually for reading. the text is so crisp that it's like reading it in a book.

One little thing you forgot to mention is the fact higher resolution do improve picture quality in distant and fine details, even if the shape is not clearly distinguishable. In the lower-res case you are limited by the sampling algorithm(s) to determine the final color, where in higher-res case it is the eye that does the sampling, much like in it would in the real world (no matter good or bad eyesight). Higher-res image will always be more correct with much less rendering artifacts.

4k is like when retina screens launched. You cant tell what the big deal is, until you have them side by side with a non-retina. So I recomend you go with what your budget can afford and you will be happy. As mentioned above there are other specs to look for as well when buying a monitor, but again don't get too hung up on these as unless your a pro gamer or have 20/20 vision or even OCD , just pick a monitor size that fits your desk and your budget with enough positive reviews. For me until GPU's can run 4k games at 60 fps on very high settings I will stick to my 27" 1920 x 1080 , 2 ms display, as that's all I need for now.

Don't forget about refresh rate. Refresh rate makes everything look and feel so much smoother in both regular desktop use and gaming. You can find some 144 Hz monitors for pretty cheap now. I bought a 27" LG IPS monitor on sale at Costco for just $180 that has 1080p, 144 Hz, 1 ms response time, and free sync/g-sync (it also has HDR, but it looks shitty, so I leave HDR off).

TODAY i saw the real difference between 2160p and 1080p ., now i want 2160p moniter but will not be able to run game on it tho ., but at 3 feet away 1080p is also same for me., however i think that tech need another 4 years to make 4k common ., i think it will be worth it to buy 4k moniter when nVidia's next architecture Volta comes out in 2018 ., i think it would be worth it because even GTX 1080 sweats on 4k ., but 1080ti or new titan may change the game .,

Currently 2560x1440 at 27" seems like the sweet spot for monitors if you are within 2-3 feet of them. I don't think I can go back to sub 120hz monitors after using a 1440p 120hz for so long and there doesn't exist a single card that handles 4k well at a decent price point. Even the GTX1080 seems to be best for 1440p or 1080p VR rather than 4k.

I gave you a thumbs up even though you missed a very important consideration: screen real estate. Even if two screens are 'retina' from the viewing distance they will be used at, the higher resolution screen will have more screen real estate, which makes multitasking _much_ easier.

The thing missing from this calculation when you're considering a monitor, is that you're going to tend to lean back more with a larger display. In that way the problem kinda fixes itself if you're on the cusp between lines. We naturally tend to lean into small displays. I use a very large display (50") but that's also because I have a terrible back and leaning forward is quite painful. 4k is almost a necessity at that size. Also the content is deeply relative. Watching video or playing action games I probably wouldn't notice 1440p at all, but if it's an RTS or reading text on a web page 1440 is VERY noticeable. If someone asks me about monitors that I know does modest to little gaming I usually just tell them buy a good sized 4k TV and save a chunk of money while enjoying the big screen.

4:23 shows the heart of the problem, yes you cannot see the pixels on either image but more pixels means more of a given image is rendered. Batman's eye in HD looks squarish, and it's hard to discern where the white meets the pupil, in 4K MORE information is still rendered and displayed. The eye looks like an eye in 4K. It adds the ability for more information to be displayed on a screen. Of course these results aren't completely accurate since I'm not watching this in on a 4K screen and a 1080p screen simultaneously but the idea is still there. More pixels, more information. Even if you were to go beyond any conceivable resolution of the human eye, you could still see more smoothness from a higher resolution.

4:3 1024x768 or 800x600 if you ask me, but im damaged from too much counter-strike. Also play cod/half-life/portal in that resolution because im so used to low res. Love your videos btw, great production value.

100 to 110ppi is the sweet spot for desktop (27inch 1440p for example). I have a 25inch ultrawide which has the same ppi of that 27inch. I'm planning to buy a 4K pc monitor around 40-43inch (Philips ones) just to get that same ppi so the resolution is useful, not just to tell people "Hey I got 4K... on 24inch... 200% scale because I can't see shit so... its just a 4K monitor acting like a 1080p... Yeah its stupid and I'm broke now..." :3 People, if you love high resolution, you have to love big monitor too because the PPI is what makes you feel good at staring a monitor all day !

This topic fascinates me. I have above average eyesight of around 20/15. I can read street signs much farther away than anyone I have tested against (friends family etc). I still remember the eye dr's reaction when I read the entire card, even the smallest letters, in their tests. So that's why I went with a 4k tv and a 4k monitor. I can notice the difference between 1080p and 4k at my usual viewing distance.

For me, "high enough" pixel density would mean if I have one white pixel lit on an otherwise black screen at maximum brightness, I couldn't see it, even in a completely dark room. This would apply even at distances where any closer and I'd have difficulty focusing my eyes. I devised a test, using my LG G4, aided by GIMP. I used GIMP to make a 2560x1440 image (so it'd properly scale for my phone), with several black squares (with white borders) containing some varying white pixels in the center. I then exported the image as PNG (to avoid compression artifacts) and uploaded to Google photos. (I haven't "shared" it yet, and I probably couldn't post the link here anyway.) One of those squares only had 1 pixel, yet I could fairly clearly see it in the pantry with the door shut and the light off. (There are no windows in that room, although a little light may have seeped in under the door.) Also, last I remember, I think my vision was somewhat better than 20/20 last time I had it checked. I'm not sure the exact number, though. I think it could have been better than 20/15, but I doubt it was quite touching 20/10. (Interestingly, both my parents have been wearing glasses for quite some time - my mom since she was 13. I'm 35 now.)

How far do i sit away from the screen, my eyesight (i now know what the meaning of the numbers is next to the seeing test) and which resolution is comfortable, to hopefully save money. I sit about 3-4 feet away from my monitor, my monitor is 24", I find gaming at 1080p (the max I can get out of the monitor) is preferable, when I can increase the size of the UI and menus, otherwise they are too small to see). I have to change my resolution to 720p on my desktop when surfing the net or working because at 1080p at 3-4 feet away windows and text are also too small. I need to upgrade my monitor.

I play on a 27 inch 1080p monitor and if I browse the internet and have to read very small text, then I realize that the resolution is not enough. But on 4K KZbin videos or in games, the 1080p resolution is more than enough for me and I enjoy the high FPS, which I also see thanks to my 144 Hz. I would never want to work on this monitor or read long texts, but for the normal enjoyment of content it is awesome. But I also have to say that I'm sitting 2.5 feet away.
