As someone who's trying to learn Irish I'll just say, the vowels seem easy next to the mutating spelling. I swear, this language was made into a written language under protest. It's like, "let's give english speakers headaches."

The "formal" reason is that the people who first made it a written language were only literate in church Latin, so they used those sounds as a starting point in their minds. Also, Irish lost a helpful bit of punctuation along the way in a mistaken attempt to standardize it to be "easier." Lenitions, which are the big source of the spelling drift, used to be marked with a dot over the lenited letter. You knew as someone who could read Irish that you changed its pronunciation when you got there because the declension of the word mandated it. Now, it's an H or BH or VH and somewhere the spectres of the Druids laugh. They wanted their last revenge on the Christ-bearers and Sassenach. ;)

If anything, Scottish Gaelic spelling is _even worse!_ There seem to be even more silent letters per word. (Handy tip for telling them apart: the fada. Irish uses the accent that looks like a little / over the letter, Scottish Gaelic uses an accent that looks like a little \ over the letter.)

My grandmothers maiden name was Coulahan. I traced it back to Fahy, Galway. Where I found it to have been Mac Coulahan. Then traced that back to the name change forced by the English from Mac Uallachain. I haven't gotten past this point. Other than there being some sort of tie to the Hy-Many (Ui Maine). From the book, 'The Tribes and Customs of the Hy-Many Commonly Called O'Kelly's Country'.
