Zulu time explained! What is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)? This is also known as Zulu time. Zulu time gives us a way to fly across different time zones without getting confused on what time it is. When we use UTC time, it also helps ATC and other agencies know which time we are talking about when we are flying across multiple time zones. I also show how to calculate Zulu time for the test! This is all information that you will need to know to become a pilot. This information will help you study for the Private Pilot written exam and the oral exam for your check ride. This training is intended to follow the aeronautical knowledge areas in Part 61.105 section b for single engine aircraft.

"Zulu" is not just military slang. The world is divided into 25 time zones, each one (except for two I'll mention later) nominally 15 degrees of longitude wide. There are 12 time zones in the Eastern hemisphere and 12 in the Western. The Eastern time zones are given the designators of "A" through "M" (there is no "J") and the Western time zones are given the designators "N" through "Y". The time zone that straddles the prime meridian, from 7.5 degrees west longitude to 7.5 degrees east longitude, is given the designation "Z". That is your Zulu time zone. Remember those two weird ones? Time zones Mike, in the Eastern hemisphere, and Yankee, in the Western hemisphere, are each only 7.5 degrees wide and they are located on either side of the International Date Line. Time zones Mike and Yankee have the same clock time (12 hours off of UTC) but different calendar dates. There is a painfully long explanation of UTC, time zones, and how to do calculations involving time, in the rather large tome, _American Practical Navigator,_ more informally known as _Bowditch._ There is a nice table giving the time zones of virtually every location around the world in _The Nautical Almanac,_ which is published jointly every year by the United States Naval Observatory and Her Majesty's Stationery Office.

Thank you! You are correct. These classifications are not really used anymore, so I didn’t really want to spend a bunch of time explaining all that because I didn’t think it was that important to flight training, and as pointed out by a student, there used to be a “J” time and that was the designator for “local” time. Thanks for the comment!

YOU should be commended & receive a trophy! I know people who’ve been in law enforcement for YEARS, but don’t know “0000 hours” is an actual time! They only write “2359” or “0001” hours. It’s obvious to me they’re skipping 1 minute EVERY TIME! THANK YOU! Also, thank you for explaining ZULU time so clearly!

3:41 the way I remember is spring forward so we're 1 hour closer to ZULU. I love in the west coast so, standard time is 8 so we spring forward so I subtract 1 hour. Conversely, we fall back sick we go farther from YT so I add more time, (1hr) =8.

@@FreePilotTraining I appreciate no problem!. However sir. I do believe that that is incorrect nomenclature for a wider view. And what I mean by that. Is before I land this. I'm going to measure twice and cut once because you can't add any more on to something if you cut it short and to anything if you cut it short. I know you understand this nomenclature into anybody with slight sensibility nomenclature might mean numbers. But it's in the way we speak as far as I know the words and numbers included. Exclusion will be the result exclusion will be the result. Excelsior is the answer! Blue apples everywhere. Get some. They're delicious.

So, I understand how the calculation works like you explained. But I was looking for an answer to a different question regarding UTC. Which you may have answered but I overlooked it because understanding it is a bit confusing for a beginner. To be fair, I am not a pilot nor am I interested in becoming one, but to anyone who can answer my question it is much appreciated. My question is, what does the UTC+8 mean? Add 8 hours? Or is it something that I missed. This is a genuine question, I've been having a hard time understanding it. Thank you!
