You're absolutely right. It's not damage, and it's never been considered as damage. Having your opponent's back is a dominant position as it isolates you from strikes and allows you to look for submissions. Islam clearly won that fight and now everyone (except for the most biased of fans) has come to terms with that realization

Getting a body triangle on an opponent as good as Volk takes some seriously good grappling skills and should be given credit when picking the winner of a round, even if there was no immediate, visible damage done. It’s a dangerous and draining position to be caught in.

To try to make the case that Makhachev with a fully locked in body triangle (one of the most dominant positions in the sport) for a long stretch and continuous submission attempts should result in a lost because of a few pitty-patty strikes from Volk is pretty laughable. Islam whooped Volk despite being dehydrated. It wasn't his best performance, but considering he was dehydrated, that's actually a perfect performance from him. I'm surprised he didn't lose. If people understand hydration rules well, I think Islam shouldve been the underdog. You have to be dumb to bet your money on a dehydrated fighter to beat a hydrated one. But Islam managed to pull it off against Volk in his hometown. GOAT status confirmed.
